Shih Tzu

4 years old

Intake weight: 9.9 pounds

Adoption fee: $300, which includes vetting, microchip

Good with other dogs: yes

Health issues: When he was a puppy, he chewed through an electric cord and got a shock. We were told every now and then, he'll flinch. We suspect it may be tiny seizures but whether or not it's related to the shock he got as a puppy, is undetermined.

Temperament: Shy at first, but VERY sweet, social and friendly once he's comfortable!

Energy level: medium

Groom needs: high maintenance; requires regular professional grooming, along with intermittent brushing to avoid matting

Biography: Sparkey came to us with four other dogs. Sadly, their owner passed away and the owner's sister had been caring for them until she could find a place for them to go. We were contacted by the niece of the owner. We traveled to Texas to pick them up. When we arrived, the owner's sister opened the door to the home. We suspected they would come out raising heck at us... but it was just the opposite! They all came barreling out of the house... happy to see us! It was the sweetest thing. Clearly, they were loved and cared for by not only the owner, but the owner's sister who'd been caring for them since her sister died. As stated above, Sparkey got a shock when he chewed through an electrical cord as a puppy. Since then, he does a little flinch every now and then. It may be tiny seizures. Whether it's related to the shock he got as a puppy is not determined. We've yet to notice him doing that but we are monitoring him. Whatever the case, it doesn't seem to affect him at all.

Lucy van Pelt, one of the dogs we took in from this situation, was pregnant and we suspect Sparkey is the daddy. There were two unaltered males in the home, Heinrich and Sparkey. So, it's for sure one of them as the daddy. Heinrich is a Bichon.

Sparkey does great in a kennel if needed and walks pretty well on a leash. The dogs were used to taking long walks off leash in the woods by their home with the sister. They stayed right with her. We were sent a video of one of the walks. They enjoyed sniffing and exploring under the watchful eye of the sister. If you'd like to bring this handsome, sweet boy into your life, we welcome your application!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

*We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved. We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule.

*Most of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing and the dog is over 15 pounds. There is no exception to this rule!

*PREDATORS: IF THIS DOG IS UNDER 10 POUNDS, the dog is to be monitored and protected when outside at all times! PREDATOR-THREAT IS A REAL DANGER! For example, a hawk tried to pick up a Chihuahua owned by a friend visiting Ninna’s house… RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VISITOR. Thankfully the visitor was watching the dog and the hawk was wrestled off of the Chihuahua but it did require an ER visit and she is was very lucky to survive. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!

*NO SMALL CHILDREN!! As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young chi
