4. Ryder

Young (1 year 9 months) · Male · Beagle / French Bulldog / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Fontana

Meet Ryder

Ryder may have the shortest little legs and the longest little body, but this adorable Beagle mix has a heart that is absolutely HUGE! This sweet boy has been through quite a journey, and we think it's about time his story gets the happiest ending!

Read more about Ryder

When Ryder first joined OURS, he discovered the wonderful world of unlimited kibble and, well, let's just say he got a little carried away! He gobbled up so much food that his belly ballooned, sending us straight to the emergency vet in a panic. As it turns out, Ryder simply has some wonky ribs that make his tummy look a little unusual when it's full. Everything works just as it should, and all that kibble digested without a hitch! Crisis averted, and Ryder earned himself a pretty funny story!

But Ryder's journey hasn't been all laughs. He came to us with his sister, his very best friend and partner in crime. Sadly, she lost her battle with complications from distemper, leaving Ryder to figure out the world without her. And while our hearts broke for this sweet boy, Ryder showed us just how resilient a little dog can be.

He learned to stand on his own four very short legs, make new friends, and embrace life with the sweetest spirit imaginable. Today, Ryder is a happy, loving little guy who is ready to leave the hard chapters behind and start his greatest adventure yet — a forever family of his very own!

Quick Facts About Ryder

Young (1 year 6 months) · Female · Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (medium coat) · 24 mi from Fontana

If you are looking for a dog who is going to be completely obsessed with you, pick Violet! She is the ultimate playful Velcro dog and once she decides you are her person, prepare to have a tiny best friend who wants to be right by your side.

Violet is a 1 year old, 14 pound poodle mixed sweetheart who has completely blossomed since coming into rescue. It's hard to believe this is the same little dog who arrived so terrified that she would cower in the back of her kennel and literally pee herself from fear. She was so shut down that she seemed determined to disappear.

Read more about Violet

We gave her something simple: time, patience, safety, and the freedom to come out of her shell at her own pace.

And look at her now!

Violet is playful, affectionate, silly, and absolutely in love with her humans. She loves attention, loves being close to her people, and has become the happiest little shadow. If you're looking for a dog who will follow you around, celebrate when you walk into the room, and make you feel like the most important person in the world, Violet may be your girl.

She gets along well with other dogs but doesn't need them for companion. We also think she may be just fine with cats with the proper introduction.

Violet's transformation has been one of our favorite reminders of why rescue matters. The frightened little dog who once tried to make herself invisible is now showing everyone exactly who she was meant to be.

If you're looking for a playful, affectionate, people loving little companion who wants to be your best friend, pick Violet. We have a feeling she is going to love you right back with her whole heart.

Young (1 year 2 months) · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 17 mi from Fontana

Kirby is a 14 month old young gentleman who is simply an all around incredible pup.

He is polite, obedient and super smart.

This good boy really loves his doggie friends and would LOVE to join a stable pack or even just have another K9 companion.

He is the kind of dog that you can trust in just about any situation.

We have no idea why such a good boy found himself without a home, but we can certainly attest to the fact that it’s their loss. As the old saying goes, “one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure. “

22. Harley

Adult (3 years 1 month) · Female · English Bulldog / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Fontana

Meet Harley

There are some dogs who walk into your life and immediately make you smile, and Harley is absolutely one of them. This short, stout, snorty little English Bulldog mix is three years old and quite possibly one of the most adorable bulldogs we’ve ever met.

Read more about Harley

Harley was found on an incredibly hot day seeking shade on someone’s porch. Thankfully, an animal advocate took her in, kept her safe and did everything possible to locate her family — but no one ever came forward. And considering someone made the decision to butcher this beautiful girl’s ears, we’re perfectly okay with Harley closing the door on that chapter of her life. Because despite whatever came before us, Harley is absolutely full of all the good stuff.

Quick Facts

Age: 3 years old
Breed: English Bulldog mix
Dog Friendly: Yes — she would benefit from continued socialization and proper introductions
Personality: Affectionate, energetic, goofy and devoted
Favorite Things: Toys, attention and making sure absolutely nothing remains inside the toy box
Location: Southern California

Harley is a compact little ball of energy, snorts and personality. She loves being part of whatever is happening and has that wonderful bulldog combination of being completely ridiculous one minute and incredibly loving the next.

She also takes her toys very seriously. Harley believes the only appropriate way to choose one is to first remove every single toy from the toy box. Once everything is scattered around and available for proper consideration, she will finally select the one she wants to play with. We don’t make the rules.

Harley is dog friendly, but she could use a little more experience navigating the doggie social scene. Continued positive socialization and thoughtful introductions will help set her up for success and allow her to build confidence in her canine relationships.

More than anything, Harley is ready to belong.

She’s looking for the family who will love her funny little quirks, appreciate every snort and wiggle, keep that toy box well stocked and give her the security of knowing she is finally home.

And in return? Harley will give you her whole heart and become one of the most dedicated companions you could ever ask for. Could Harley be the one you’ve been waiting for? If you are interested in adopting Harley, please apply here.

We believe every dog deserves to be loved and safe.

23. Jessie

Young (1 year 1 month) · Female · Chihuahua / Greyhound / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Fontana

Jessie is a joyful little firecracker who approaches life at full speed! This playful, energetic girl absolutely loves other dogs and is happiest when she has a four-legged friend to wrestle with, chase around the yard, and join her for a serious case of the zoomies.

Jessie is still learning how to channel all that enthusiasm, but underneath the wiggles is a sweet, social girl with so much potential. She’s looking for a family who will give her the exercise, structure, confidence, and training she needs to become her very best self.

Quick Facts

Wonderful with both big and small dogs

Would thrive with a playful, well-mannered canine companion

Read more about Jessie

Cats are unknown, but she can be tested

Best suited for older children or teens due to her enthusiastic puppy energy

High-energy, playful and always ready for fun

Loves toys and happily carries them around

No food or toy guarding with people or other dogs

A home with a secure yard and room to run would be ideal

Would benefit from continued training, confidence building and consistent routines

Can be nervous around unfamiliar people on walks and needs a securely fitted harness and patient guidance

Crate trained for sleeping and when her people are away, although she is still working through some anxiety and FOMO when she knows fun is happening without her

A confident, well-mannered resident dog could be a wonderful role model for her

Located in Southern California

Jessie can initially be shy with new people, particularly men, and she appreciates being allowed to make friends at her own pace. Once she feels comfortable, her playful personality takes center stage. She’s very much a “follow the pack” kind of girl and looks to the dogs around her for cues, which is another reason we think the right canine sibling could be fantastic for her.

Right now, some of Jessie’s extra energy and frustration are amplified because she is recovering from her spay and hasn’t been able to run, wrestle, and play the way she normally would. When she gets excited, she can be vocal and occasionally mouthy in that silly puppy way, so she’ll need someone willing to patiently teach her appropriate ways to channel her enthusiasm. She’s also learning that shoes, hats, and other tempting human belongings aren’t actually dog toys!

Jessie isn’t looking for a quiet, sedentary life. She wants activities, adventures, zoomies, toys, training, and preferably a dog friend who thinks wrestling is just as much fun as she does. Because she needs room to burn off energy and can be vocal when excited, apartment living probably isn’t the best fit.

With an active family, consistent boundaries, plenty of appropriate exercise, and some confidence-building along the way, we think Jessie is going to absolutely blossom. She may not be a couch potato or champion cuddler just yet—there are simply too many exciting things to do!—but for the family looking for a funny, spirited little sidekick who will keep life interesting, Jessie might be exactly their girl. 24. Inky

Adult (2 years 1 month) · Female · Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Fontana

Meet Inky

Some dogs run straight into your arms. Others make you earn your way into their heart—and somehow, that makes every little piece of their trust feel like a gift. Inky is one of those dogs.

Inky came to us with her Dachshund-mix family after living in a home where the dogs were used for breeding. She appears to be a little older than the others, and it’s entirely possible she may even be their mama. We may never know exactly what role Inky played in their previous life, but we do know that she arrived as the shyest of the bunch.

Read more about Inky

This beautiful girl prefers to observe things from the perimeter while she decides whether everything is safe. But look closely and you’ll realize something important: Inky wants connection. She watches you with the most soulful eyes, and when your eyes meet, you can almost see her working up the courage.

Then, slowly, she makes her way over.

And before you know it, this cautious little girl is crawling into your lap.

The first time we saw Inky’s tail wag was pure magic. It may seem like such a small thing, but in rescue, sometimes a tail wag tells an entire story. It told us that somewhere underneath all that uncertainty was a little dog beginning to believe that maybe she was safe. Maybe these humans were good. And maybe being loved could actually feel pretty wonderful.

Quick Facts

Dachshund mix with that adorable long Doxie body

A little older than the others in her family—and possibly their mama

Shy, gentle & wonderfully sensitive

Has the most beautiful, soulful eyes

Wants connection even when she’s still working up the courage to ask for it

Will quietly make her way over and crawl into your lap

Her trust is something truly special to earn

Needs patience, reassurance & continued confidence building

Accustomed to having canine companions

A little chunkier than the rest of her crew—more Inky to love!

Would benefit from a family familiar with Dachshunds and their long-back care needs

Located in Southern California

Inky isn’t going to be the dog bouncing at the front of the crowd demanding your attention. She’ll be nearby, watching and wondering if you might be someone she can trust.

Give her the time to answer that question for herself.

Because the moment those soulful eyes meet yours, that little tail starts wagging, and Inky quietly climbs into your lap, you’ll understand just how precious it is to be chosen by her. If you are interested in meeting Inky, please fill out our application here.

28. Crypto

Adult (3 years 1 month) · Male · Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 18 mi from Fontana

Meet Crypto

Crypto may take a little time to decide you’re his person—but once he feels safe, you’ll get to see the sweet, gentle boy hiding behind that shy exterior.

This handsome guy is naturally a little reserved when meeting new people and settling into new surroundings. He isn’t the type to charge into a room demanding attention. Crypto likes to observe, figure things out, and build trust at his own pace. Give him that little bit of patience, and you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful companion who just needed someone to give him the chance to feel secure.

Read more about Crypto

Crypto has an easygoing, non-dominant personality and does well with other dogs. He’ll occasionally play with toys, but he isn’t possessive over them or his food. He’s crate trained and may serenade you with a few whines and his signature little “whistle” when he has something to say.

Like many dogs adjusting to a new home, Crypto may do some marking at first, so a belly band is a great tool during that initial transition. Once he understands the routine and realizes this is his home, we expect that behavior to settle as he becomes comfortable.

Quick Facts

Sweet, gentle and non-dominant
❤️ Shy at first and needs a little time to build trust
Does well with other dogs
Occasionally enjoys toys and isn’t possessive
️ Eats two meals a day and shows no food aggression
Crate trained
Known to whine—and even “whistle”—when he has something to say
May mark initially while adjusting to a new home; a belly band can help
Looking for patient, consistent humans who will give him time to settle in
Located in Southern California

Crypto doesn’t need someone to rush him. He needs someone willing to let him exhale, learn the routine, and realize he’s finally home. 30. Sage

Adult (3 years 4 months) · Female · Poodle (Standard) / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 24 mi from Fontana

Sage is an approximately 3 year old, 45 pound Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle mix who has come an incredibly long way, but she is not a typical adoption dog.

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING:

Sage is a semi feral, extremely fearful dog and an extreme flight risk. She is not comfortable with strangers, sudden movements, unfamiliar environments, loud noises or the unpredictable activity of the outside world. While she has made incredible progress, her fear of people remains significant, and she needs an adopter who truly understands what that means.

Sage needs a very specific kind of home.

Read more about Sage

She needs a quiet, predictable home with no young children she wouldn't harm them but they are SUPER SCARY. Children and their sudden movements, noises, and activity are frightening to Sage, so a home with young children would not be appropriate for her.

Sage is also not a dog who can safely go on walks, hikes, dog parks, outings, or adventures. Her flight risk is extreme. This is not an exaggeration. Even after her spay surgery, Sage escaped from her veterinarian's office when her kennel was opened and immediately bolted. Because of this, her safety must be taken extremely seriously.

Her ideal home will have a secure, fully enclosed backyard where she can enjoy life without being put in situations that frighten her. She does not need a busy social life or a calendar full of adventures. Her adventures can happen right at home, where she feels safe.

And if you have a pool, Sage will think she has hit the jackpot! ♀️ She absolutely loves to swim and would happily spend hours swimming, playing fetch, and enjoying her backyard. A pool is not required, but it would be an incredible bonus for this special girl.

Sage also absolutely loves other dogs, and we strongly believe she needs a confident, well adjusted canine companion in her forever home. Another dog can provide her with security, companionship, and an example of how to navigate the world. We are looking for a home where she can have a dog friend who will help her continue becoming more confident.

Sage does not need someone who wants to take her everywhere. She needs someone who is perfectly happy letting her stay home.

She needs someone who understands that earning her trust may take time. Someone who will not force affection, rush her, or expect her to eventually become a social butterfly. Someone who can celebrate the tiny victories that most people might never notice: a tail wag, a playful zoomie, choosing to stay nearby, taking a treat, coming closer on her own, or simply feeling safe enough to relax.

And when Sage feels safe, her silly personality starts to come out.

We're seeing more and more of the goofy girl underneath all that fear, from harmless kitchen "shopping" to playful zoomies and curious little moments that show us she is finally learning what it means to just be a dog.

There isn't a mean bone in Sage's body. Her challenge is fear, not aggression.

Sage doesn't need someone to fix her.

She needs someone who will accept her exactly as she is, protect her from the things that terrify her, and give her the freedom to grow at her own pace.

Sage is looking for a very specific adopter, and we know that person is out there.

If you are looking for a dog who can accompany you everywhere, go for walks and hikes, meet new people, attend outings, or easily adapt to a busy household, Sage is not the dog for you.

But if you are looking for a deeply rewarding relationship with a special dog whose trust must be earned, if you have a calm and secure home, a confident canine companion, and the patience to let Sage become comfortable on her own terms, you may be exactly the person she has been waiting for. ❤️

Why adopt an adult dog in Fontana

An adult dog's personality is fully formed, so the rescue can tell you how they are with people, other pets and busy households. Many have lived in foster homes and are already house-trained.

Grown dogs need less supervision than puppies and often know the basics, like sitting and walking on a leash, which suits people who work or have young children.
