1. Jackson
Adult · Male · Dachshund / Poodle (Miniature) (medium coat) · 13 mi from Hartley

MEET JACKSON — OUR VERY OWN ENGLISH GENTLEMAN! ❤️
Jackson is a distinguished 8-year-old Poodle/Dachshund mix with a heart of gold, a gentle soul, and a personality that makes him so easy to love!
This handsome gentleman is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccinations, and ready to find that special someone to call his very own.
Jackson is the definition of a loyal companion. He’s gentle, affectionate, and almost always happy. He doesn’t need a life filled with excitement or adventure. What Jackson would truly love is a peaceful home, a comfortable lap, and someone who enjoys having a devoted little companion by their side.

Looking for a lap dog? Jackson might just be your perfect match!
This sweet boy absolutely loves lying on your lap, soaking up affection, and simply being close to his person. He’s the kind of dog who would be perfectly content spending a quiet afternoon curled up with you, keeping you company while you read, watch television, or simply enjoy the day.
Jackson has the sweetest disposition. He barks appropriately, does reasonably well on a leash, and has that wonderful, easygoing personality that makes him such a pleasure to have around.
We think Jackson would be an especially wonderful companion for someone who lives a quieter lifestyle, someone retired, or anyone looking for a loving little lap dog to share their days with.
At 8 years young, Jackson has so much love left to give. He’s not asking for much. Just a soft place to land, a lap to curl up on, and someone who will love him as much as he’ll love them.
There’s something incredibly special about an older dog who simply wants to be loved. No grand expectations, no complicated demands, just the beautiful gift of companionship.
Jackson may not be the youngest gentleman in the room, but he just might be the most devoted. ❤️
Could you be the lucky person who gives this sweet English gentleman his happily ever after?

2. Chip
Young · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 15 mi from Hartley

We love Chip, and we know you will, too!
Chip is estimated to be 7 months old, and he is a sweet and playful guy who is a little ray of sunshine. He has a happy personality and is quick to cover your face in kisses. He is a moderate-energy guy who would love a family to shower him with love. Chip weighs about 7-8lbs and we think he is pretty much fully grown.
Read more about Chip
Chip came to us from our local animal shelter after he was found as a stray. He arrived with his brother Dale, who has since been adopted, and the boys sat at the shelter for weeks with little adoption interest. We were more than happy to have Chip come to us, and he is now eager to find his fur-ever family.
Chip is the perfect mix of active and chill. He loves his daily walks and playing with his toys, but he is also happy to keep you company on the couch for downtime at home. He is a true lover boy who just loves quality time spent with the people he loves. In classic Chihuahua fashion, he loves to get cozy under the covers, and his favorite nap spot is in his foster mom's closet. He is a big cuddler and would love to be your snuggle buddy for cold Autumn nights. Chip has some basic training down, but would benefit from continuing to work on his training with his new family.
Chip loves other dogs and would adore having another playful pup to play with. He also could do well as an only dog, as long as he gets to have lots of dog friends. We have not seen Chip around cats, but he may do well with dog-savvy cats after a slow introduction and with proper supervision. Chip could be a wonderful addition to a family with kids 10 years and older.
Chip has been doing very well with his house-training using pee pads. He isn't the biggest fan of being in a crate, but has been doing well being left in a bathroom or bedroom for short periods during the day. He has done well living in an apartment with proper daily exercise.
Chip is such a sweet little guy, and he can't wait to be your new BFF. If he sounds like the pup for you, submit an application today!
Chip's adoption fee is $350.

3. Patches
Young · Male · Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 15 mi from Hartley

Loyal, affectionate, and goofy - Patches is the complete package!
Patches is estimated to be around 2 years old, and he is a darling boy looking for a special family to call his own. He has the funniest little personality and is a comical guy who loves his people. Patches is a moderate-energy guy who would thrive in a quiet home with a family to shower him with love. Patches is the perfect small/medium size, weighing around 20lbs.
Read more about Patches
Patches was found as a stray and brought to a high-kill shelter in Central California. He was scared and shut down at the shelter, and the volunteers knew he would blossom outside the shelter environment. We were able to save him, and he has been charming us with his loving personality ever since.
Patches is a sweet and sensitive boy who bonds strongly with his people. He can be unsure of strangers, especially in his foster home, but we have found he can make new human friends with the help of treats and meeting in a neutral place. Once you become his friend, he will want to be in your lap and to get lots of love. Patches needs a family who will advocate for him and make sure he is slowly introduced to new people, or kept in his crate when guests are over. Patches has been doing great in a home with a foster mom and dad, and appears to love them equally. He joined them for a holiday weekend trip to their mountain cabin, and he did great meeting their adult kids. He loved having the space to run in the great outdoors! Patches loves his toys and daily walks. He is a pretty good walker, but will sometimes bark at other dogs when he is excited. He has some basic manners training and has great manners around the house (although he does enjoy stealing socks).
Patches has done very well living with other dogs. He does best with other playful dogs, as he can be persistent about wanting to play. He also could do well as an only dog. Patches currently lives with a cat, but is pretty obnoxious about trying to get the cat to play with him. Unless your cat would like a dog to play with, he would do best in a kitty-free home. Patches needs an adult-only home.
Patches is house and crate trained. He is content hanging out in his crate during the day and sleeps through the night in there. Since he isn't a big fan of guests, he is happy to hang out in his crate in the bedroom when people he doesn't know come over. Patches takes his role as the house alarm system seriously, so he wouldn't be a good fit to live in an apartment.
Patches takes a daily anti-anxiety medication to help him with his general anxiety. It has helped him tremendously and is a fairly affordable medication (around $20 for a month's supply).
Patches is such a sweet guy and is going to bring so much joy and love to his new family. If you think that might be you, submit an application today!
Patches's adoption fee is $300.

4. Audrey
Young · Female · Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 15 mi from Hartley

Audrey is the epitome of a big personality in a small package!
Audrey is estimated to be around a year old, and she is a bundle of fun who is always down for an adventure. Her favorite activities include wrestling with her foster sister, racing around the backyard, and cuddling with her foster parents. She would thrive with a semi-active family who would enjoy a moderately active puppy. She would be a great dog for dog sports! Audrey is a petite girl, weighing in at about 9lbs.
Read more about Audrey
Audrey came to us from our local animal shelter after she was adopted and returned after she and the older dog in the home didn't get along. We were quick to scoop her up, and she has been doing great in her foster home.
Audrey is a blast to be around, and she will keep you entertained with her morning zoomies and straight-into-the-air jumps. Audrey is also a big lovebug and is happiest when she can be with her people. She gets all cozy when settled down and makes a great late-night TV buddy. Her foster sisters have taught her the joy of sunbathing and lazy afternoons on the couch. Audrey loves her daily walks. She also does great for car rides. Audrey is still learning her basic manners and will need a family committed to continuing her training.
Audrey appears to have a strong preference for women and would do best in a home with mostly women.
Audrey loves playing with other dogs, so we would like her to be adopted into a home with another playful dog. She can be a little jealous sometimes, but with proper management, she has had no problem living with two other small female dogs. Audrey needs a home without cats or other small animals, as she has a high prey drive. Audrey has done great with respectful kids and could be a wonderful addition to a family with kids 7 years old or older.
Audrey has been doing great with her house training using a dog door. Audrey is used to sleeping in bed with her foster parents and happily sleeps through the night. Audrey has done well being left at home with her foster sisters for short periods during the day, both free roaming and in a crate. Audrey has a big voice and isn't afraid to use it, so apartment life isn't for her.
Audrey is such a dynamite dog, and she is going to bring so much fun and joy to her new family. If you think that might be you, submit an application today!
Audrey's adoption fee is $350.

5. Noor
Young · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 15 mi from Hartley

Noor is a one-of-a-kind dog that will melt your heart!
Noor is estimated to be around a year old and is a charming gentleman who loves everyone he meets. He is the epitome of a social butterfly and adores making new friends wherever he goes - both human and four-legged. He has an easygoing personality that makes him the perfect addition to just about any family. Noor is a petite guy and weighs a little over 45lbs.
Read more about Noor
Noor came to us from an overcrowded animal shelter in Central CA. He was originally adopted from the shelter as a tiny puppy, but was returned as a young adult when the family had to move. He was a staff and volunteer favorite at the shelter, but found himself on the euthanasia list due to no fault of his own. We stepped in to save his life, and we have all fallen head over heels in love with him. He can't wait to be your new best friend!
Noor is a perfect example of how amazing rescue dogs can be. He is gentle, friendly, well-mannered, and oh-so cute! Everyone who meets him can't help but fall in love with his adorable, big brown eyes and charming personality. He has great energy and is happy to be lazy at home, but is always down for an adventure around town. He has done great joining his foster family for meals at dog-friendly restaurants and hosting dinner parties at home. He loves his walks around the UCD Arboretum and is great on leash. He is very much food-obsessed, but has good manners around food. Noor knows his basic manners, and is eager to learn more - especially if food is involved. He would make a great first-time dog for someone who wants a moderate-energy dog who is past the crazy puppy phase.
Noor has done great living with another large dog, and they love to wrestle and cuddle together. He would do great with a doggy sibling (or siblings) in his new home, but he also wouldn't mind being your only dog - more attention for him! Noor has done great living with a dog-savvy cat. Noor could be a wonderful addition to a family with respectful kids.
Noor is housetrained and is comfortable hanging out in his crate while home alone and sleeping in there overnight. Noor has been doing very well living in an apartment with daily exercise.
Noor is practically perfect, but tragically, we have learned that he was born with a heart defect (subaortic stenosis) that can't be cured. He has been started on medication to help slow his heart rate (which is less than $20 a month), but at some point, he will go into heart failure. He will have a significantly shorter lifespan than most dogs, and his heart will need to be monitored to assess how his condition progresses. While this is horrible news, Noor doesn't need any activity restrictions and can continue to do all the things he loves.
We know that adopting Noor means you will only get a short time with him, but we promise that taking a chance on a boy with a broken heart will be worth all the love he will bring to your life. If you think Noor is the special pup you have been searching for, submit an application today!
Noor's adoption fee is $300.

7. Jack formerly Gomez
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog · 25 mi from Hartley

Hi, everybody! Guess what?! I've left my shelter name, Gomez, behind and am now going by Jack. I’m just 12 weeks old, and last week I left the shelter with my littermates to start a brand-new adventure with ShepHeroes! I have a lot to learn about this big, exciting world, so I’m going to need a little time to get my paws on the ground before I can tell you all about myself. After leaving the shelter, I spent a night at a foster home in Sacramento with Pumkin and Larry Munster, got a bath and nail trims, and then headed off to my next adventure in San Jose. Then I lived as the solo puppy good life with a whole tribe of friendly German Shepherds who welcomed me in! I even got to go on a pack walk, all safe and cozy in my foster mom's doggie backpack.

My first foster home in SJ was for a few days, while I waited for my intended, and current, foster family to be ready to take me to their house. So I'm now living with a retriever and a ShepHeroes alum and a baby. I absolutely love snuggles and exploring everything around me! My meds helped me recover from kennel cough, which I caught at the shelter. I’ve got lots of growing, playing, and exploring ahead, and I’ll be back soon with more puppy news! Love,Your newest little ShepHeroes recruit

8. Larry Munster
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog · 25 mi from Hartley

Hi, everybody! I’m just 12 weeks old, and I arrived at ShepHeroes with my littermates Pumkin and Jack, aka Gomez! We’re starting a brand-new adventure, and I’m pretty sure lots of exciting things are ahead. My foster family decided to call me Larry Munster, adding Larry to my shelter name. I’ve settled in, and I've even gone to my foster mom's office with her, so I’ll have more to share once I’ve had a chance to explore, play, and show everyone what makes me special. I love cuddles, have the softest coat per my foster, and love to follow her around the house. I'm working on potty training, crate training, and sleeping through the night.
Read more about Larry Munster
We spent our first night out of the shelter with a foster family, getting baths and desperately needed nail trims. After a good night's sleep with lots of playtime with each other and the resident shepherds, plus another foster dog, four-year-old Daisy, who watched over us like all good female shepherds. I adored my bath whereas my littermates weren't so sure it was a good thing. We met Daisy's forever family the morning we were getting back on the road to head to our next foster homes, as she was getting adopted.I'm the only puppy in my current foster home, and I love all the attention and snuggles. To grow, I'm taking lots of naps, as puppies need 16-18 hours of sleep. But I'll be seeing Pumkin et al. frequently for playdates. Stay tuned! My story is just beginning!

9. Pumkin
Puppy · Female · German Shepherd Dog · 25 mi from Hartley

Guess who just arrived at ShepHeroes?! Hi, everyone! I’m a 12-week-old German Shepherd puppy, and I busted out of the shelter with my littermates, Jack (aka Gomez) and Larry Munster, to land in rescue! We’ve spent the last week settling in, so there’s lots more to share about our little puppy adventures. The three of us spent a night in a Sacramento foster home, waiting for our ride to San Jose the next day. Baths, nail trims - snuggles made those weird experiences better. Larry Munster enjoyed his bath, though. Oh, and about those names you might see floating around? Those were shelter-given names, and honestly, we hadn't bothered learning them! We hear one of the perks of landing in a foster home is that our foster families get to pick our rescue names.
Read more about Pumkin
How fun is that?! And in the spirit of Halloween, I kept my name Pumkin because I'm just a sweet little pumkin. I am brave, independent, and a steady explorer. I easily incorporate into new households with their shepherds and other dogs, steady for sure. I love attention and snuggles like all pups, but I will also take my toy and happily hang out in my pen area during the day or in my crate all night. My foster family has two resident shepherds, and extended family has a couple of corgis; we have regular playdates. I also got to take a stroller ride with my own personal driver during the Fall Festival; my driver said I was such a well-behaved pup. I didn't need to jump out or explore because people kept coming to say sweet things to me and pet me throughout our time there. Stay tuned, friends! I'll keep giving you updates as I get to go on more adventures.

He's learned lots of skills such as sit, out, leave it, pee potty, place, and when tired, he will self-crate for a nap. He puts himself to bed in his crate at 8 pm, has a quick potty break at midnight, and sleeps until 6 am. With his irresistibly handsome looks and floppy ear tips—now perking up more each day—Rocket has truly blossomed. After good nutrition and TLC, he’s gaining weight, and his coat is starting to shine just like his siblings’. Watching him explore his foster home, enjoy the yard, and finally rest easy after his time on the streets and in the shelter has been a joy. He soaks up every bit of love from the resident shepherd, who can’t get enough of this puppy. When he’s not following his best buddy, the resident shepherd, he’s always ready for snuggles and kisses—he truly thrives on attention. He’s had several accident-free days, which have continued with reminders and guidance appropriate for his age, and he has no problem letting you know what’s on his mind, sharing his opinions in classic shepherd style. When Rocket’s foster family left for a preplanned vacation, he traveled to his next foster home in Sacramento, where he now lives with two shepherds and a cat. He’s already mastered the doggy door, respectfully ignores the senior cat, and absolutely loves his crate—especially when it’s filled with his growing pile of favorite toys. Rocket is excellent in the car, traveling for several hours while napping in his travel crate. He's also good on leash, taking short excursions around his neighborhood courtyard. While waiting for his new foster family, Rocket spent a couple of hours with new friends—including our adoptable Joey—and showed how steady and adaptable he is. He fit right in, playing with toys and even enjoying a game of tug with a senior alum.In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rocket is proudly sporting a pink leash!Interested in learning more? 12. Joey
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog · 25 mi from Hartley

Joey’s comeback story just keeps getting better! And he'll be hosting our table at Leash and Collar Sacramento's Annual Tricks for Treats event on Saturday, October 31st, from 10 am to 1 pm. Look for us on Q Street between 17th and 18th Streets. Joey’s world is getting bigger, and his happy personality is shining brighter every day! Eight weeks after his femur repair surgery, this resilient boy is enjoying short breaks from crate rest and rediscovering the fun of being a puppy. He loves his toys, has an impressive tug game, a wonderful recall, and an enthusiasm for treats!Joey had his first group lesson last week and also took a field trip to the feed store to check out all kinds of new smells.
Read more about Joey
And he was such a good boy, taking treats and learning to shake. Joey also went to Geisthaus Brewing Company for a Brewery Manners class with Wholistic Canine and was a super good boy at the Citrus Heights Food Plaza's Halloween event. He'll be back to low-key activities and crate confinement for a few days, but this time to recover from his neuter surgery. His surgical incision has healed, and he’s said goodbye to his e-cone. He’s also been practicing his vacation skills! Over Labor Day weekend, Joey joined his foster family for a getaway to Tahoe, where he rode beautifully in the car and enjoyed the mountain air from the deck. What a trooper!Joey’s journey began with a serious fracture of his right femur, broken into multiple fragments, along with an infected open wound. Thanks to the quick response of Hitchcock Road Animal Services, the generosity of our friends at @UCDavisFractureProgram, and a team of dedicated volunteers who arranged transport from Salinas to Davis in just hours, Joey got the urgent medical care he needed. Two plates were used to repair his femur, and he headed to his foster home on August 29 to begin his recovery. The road to healing called for strict crate rest, but Joey has made the most of his recovery. He’s mastered crate and potty training, discovered the joys of chew toys (especially while shedding his baby teeth!), and shown us just how much personality can shine through, even when a puppy has to take it easy. Now, as Joey has healed, we’re excited for everyone to meet this wonderful boy. He’s overcome a lot in his short life, and his future is looking brighter every day. His next big adventure? Finding a forever family who will love him as much as he deserves! Want to help Joey on his road to recovery? You can send toys and treats through our Chewy or Amazon wish lists, donate via Venmo at @shepheroes, or use the donate button next to his bio at shepheroes.org/adopt.Every bit of support helps Joey get one step closer to his happily ever after! We are very thankful for any support you can give as we just launched Ambra, aka Summer, to her forever home after 4 months with us while she healed from multiple surgeries. 13. Otti
Puppy · Female · German Shepherd Dog · 25 mi from Hartley

Meet Otti — Our Special Little Girl with a Whole Lot of Shepherd Love! We’re excited to announce that Otti will be joining Joey and Rocket at our booth this Saturday in Sacramento for the Tricks for Treats event, hosted by Leash and Collar Pet Boutique! All three are wonderful, adoptable shepherds looking for their forever homes. Stop by to meet them on Q Street between 7th and 8th Streets from 10 am to 1 pm.Some dogs come into your life and steal your heart. Others come along and teach you that a little extra love, patience, and understanding can make all the difference. Our sweet Otti has done both! Otti’s journey with us began when we picked her up from the shelter at an estimated 4 weeks old.
Read more about Otti
She was so tiny she could fit in the palm of your hand, with barely enough ears to see! She looked more like a baby otter than a German Shepherd puppy, and just like that, our little Otti got her name. From those first tiny puppy days, we’ve loved watching her grow, learn, play, and develop into a sweet, silly, affectionate girl with a personality all her own.By about 4 months old, we started to realize Otti was going to be a little different. She developed a fascination with chasing her tail that went well beyond the adorable puppy-spinning phase. And when I say spinning, I mean this girl looked like a load of laundry on the spin cycle! Knowing she might need some extra help, we worked with the wonderful behavioral team at UC Davis to better understand her needs and learn how to give her the happiest, most fulfilling life possible. With their guidance, daily medication, consistency, and positive redirection, we’ve learned ways to help Otti settle and refocus. She still thinks her tail is pretty fascinating, but a yummy treat, a good bone to chew, or a little distraction can help her redirect that energy. And here’s the beautiful thing about Otti: her extra needs are only one small piece of who she is.This girl has SO much love to give! She’s a true German Shepherd in every sense of the word. A loyal, loving, Velcro girl who wants to be wherever her people are. If you’re moving from room to room, you can bet Otti isn’t far behind. She likes to keep her people within eyesight because, heaven forbid, something exciting happens without her! She absolutely loves visitors and welcomes opportunities for attention and affection. She enjoys playing with our pack, chasing after our dogs during fetch, and turning a simple game into a full-blown case of the zoomies! And when the excitement settles? She’s more than happy to curl up next to you for a good snuggle and nap.A few more things that make Otti pretty darn wonderful: Walks nicely on a leash and enjoys exploring with her people. Crate trained and sleeps through the night. Loves her nighttime cuddles and will happily take every extra minute of snuggle time you’re willing to give before heading to bed. Enjoys an occasional car ride and being included in life’s little adventures. Loves playing fetch, romping with other dogs, and spending time with her people. Has a sweet, affectionate personality and a whole lot of enthusiasm for life!Around 7 months old, we noticed something else about our girl. She seemed to have stopped growing. At first, we thought she might just be a petite little Shepherd, but when her weight also stopped increasing, we wanted to make sure nothing more was going on.We requested bloodwork and discovered Otti has a pancreatic disorder that prevents her body from properly absorbing the nutrients from her food. The good news? We had an answer and a way to help her!Otti now receives a digestive enzyme powder mixed into her meals to help her absorb the nutrients she needs. And WOW, what a difference we’ve already seen!In just over a month, she’s gained more than 10 pounds, grown a couple of inches taller, and her coat is becoming beautifully shiny. Watching her little body finally get the nutrients it needs has been such a wonderful part of her journey. Our sweet girl may require

14. Emerald Green
Senior · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 28 mi from Hartley

Meet Emerald Green
Emerald is an approximately 10-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua who has already survived more than most dogs ever should.
When his owner went to the hospital and never returned, Emerald was left behind inside the home. He survived there on his own for nearly a month before out-of-state family arrived to manage the property and discovered him.
They did not even know she had a dog.
There were no records. No one knew his name. No one knew his history. What they did know was that he was terrified.
The shelters were closed that day, the family was preparing to return home, and they brought Emerald to our veterinarian after being told repeatedly that euthanasia might be the only option.
Our veterinarian said absolutely not.
She called us.
And Emerald became an Umbrella of Hope dog.
At first, Emerald was deeply traumatized by everything around him. New people, sudden movements, unfamiliar places and even normal household activity could send him into panic. He is still cautious, but he is making real progress.
He recently attended an adoption event and did GREAT.
That was a huge milestone for a dog who once believed the entire world was dangerous.
Emerald has also shown us something very important: once he decides someone is safe, he is capable of forming a very strong bond. He seeks comfort from the people he trusts and clearly enjoys having a person nearby. When that person leaves the room, he may even sing a few dramatic little Chihuahua songs in protest.
Despite being around 10 years old, Emerald apparently did not receive the memo that he is a senior.
This little man can RUN.
He is fast, agile and fully capable of turning “come here” into an Olympic-level event if he is feeling playful.
Emerald is in good health for his age and is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and free of parasites.
Because the outside world can still feel intimidating, he may initially have some potty accidents while learning the routine and understanding that a new home is truly his home. He needs a family willing to give him structure without pressure and patience without expectations.
Emerald does not need someone to “fix” him.
He needs someone willing to let him unfold.
Someone who understands that trust may come slowly, but when it comes, it is incredibly meaningful.
His ideal adopter will give him time to observe, decompress and decide for himself that he is safe. He may never be the dog who runs into a stranger’s arms five minutes after meeting them, and that is perfectly okay.
What he can become is deeply devoted to the person who earns his trust.
Emerald lost everything he knew without understanding why. He survived alone. He was almost written off before anyone had the chance to learn who he really was.
Now he just needs someone willing to give him the final piece of his story:
A home where nobody leaves him behind again.
Please don’t overlook an older boy because he needs a little extra time.
Sometimes the most frightened hearts have the most love left to give.

15. Peridot GREEN
Senior · Female · Poodle (Miniature) / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat) · 28 mi from Hartley

Meet PERIDOT
Peridot is an approximately 7-year-old, 12-pound mixed-breed girl—possibly a Dachshund/Poodle mix—who is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and free of parasites.
She also happens to be one of those dogs who makes it very easy to fall in love.Peridot is sweet, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she is close to her person. Her tail seems to have only one setting: wagging. Mornings are her favorite because that means she gets to see her people again, and she greets them with the happiest little wiggles.
She is potty trained, crate trained, and a very fast learner. She sleeps peacefully through the night and has shown no food aggression.
Read more about Peridot GREEN
She gets along well with other small dogs, but given the choice, Peridot would probably rather be curled up next to her human on the couch watching TV.
Peridot does have a medical condition that her future family should understand. She has been diagnosed with low-grade mammary adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer affecting the mammary glands. Her veterinarian estimates that she may have another 1–5 years, although every dog's journey is different. Her mammary glands and any changes in her masses will need continued monitoring so that her comfort and quality of life remain the priority. Umbrella of Hope is committed to Peridot's well-being and will cover the cost of euthanasia when the time comes and it is no longer kind to ask her to stay. She deserves to live out her days surrounded by love, comfort, and all the good things life has to offer.
And Peridot?
She is still her same happy, loving little self.
She wants to go for walks, snuggle up with her favorite people, collect all the treats, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being someone's beloved little dog. Her diagnosis hasn't changed her sunny personality or her desire to be part of a family.
Peridot would be a wonderful match for someone looking for a devoted little companion who enjoys a predictable routine, gets along with other small dogs, has excellent house manners, and thinks the best seat in the house is the one directly beside you.
Adopting Peridot means opening your heart to a dog whose future may be uncertain—but whose capacity to love is not. She doesn't need someone to feel sorry for her. She needs someone who sees the happy, affectionate little girl she is today and wants to make her days as wonderful as possible.
There are walks to take, cuddles to share, treats to enjoy, and so much love still to give.Peridot is waiting for someone to look at her and say, “That's my girl.”

16. Mooncalf Beast
Senior · Female · Maltese / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat) · 28 mi from Hartley

✨ PLEASE MEET MOONCALF — OUR NEWEST FANTASTIC BEAST ✨
Mooncalf is approximately 12 years old, and this tiny senior girl has already endured far more than she ever should have.
When she came into Umbrella of Hope Rescue, her diabetes was completely uncontrolled. Her blood glucose was so high that it was literally beyond the range the equipment could measure.
She will need insulin injections under the skin twice daily for the rest of her life.
Unfortunately, diabetes is only part of her medical story.
Mooncalf also has KCS (dry eye) affecting both eyes. This is a painful condition that requires specialized prescription eye medication twice daily to keep her comfortable and help protect her vision.
Her skin is also in terrible condition, as you can see in her photos, and we are working to determine the underlying causes and get her comfortable again.
She also has a mammary mass along with several other age-related medical concerns that still need evaluation and treatment.
And yet, somehow, Mooncalf remains incredibly sweet.
She is gentle. She is trusting. She still wants affection.
She has every reason in the world to be angry at what life has handed her, and instead she simply seems grateful that someone is finally taking care of her.
We are committed to giving Mooncalf the medical care she needs and the comfortable senior life she deserves.
But chronic illness is expensive.
Insulin.
Syringes.
Prescription eye medications.
Blood glucose monitoring.
Diagnostics.
Veterinary visits.
Skin treatment.
Evaluation of her mammary mass.
And whatever else we uncover as we continue working through years of neglected medical needs.
This is exactly why rescue takes a village.
If you can help Mooncalf, even a small donation makes a difference.

Mooncalf did not get to choose the body she grew old in or the medical problems she developed.
But we can choose what happens next.
We can make sure her golden years are filled with comfort, proper medical care, good food, soft beds, and people who believe an elderly diabetic dog is still absolutely worth saving.
Please help us give Mooncalf the life she deserves. ❤️
Thank you for being part of her journey.

Adult · Male · Poodle (unknown type) / Schnauzer · 33 mi from Hartley

🤍 Meet Pierre! 🤍🐶 Pierre Jacques is an adorable 1½-year-old Poodle-ish Schnauzer terrier mix weighing about 13 pounds. He’s the perfect combination of sweet, smart, playful, and affectionate.🐾 Adoption Requirements (Please Read)Pierre is looking for a home that can meet his specific needs. His ideal home includes:* Another friendly, playful dog (preferred)* Children 12 years or older* An experienced adopter comfortable managing fear-based behavior during veterinary and grooming visits* Commitment to continued training, exercise, and mental enrichment* Professional grooming every 4â"6 weeks* A home (not an apartment) where his vocal, talkative personality won’t be an issue🎾 Personality & LifestylePierre is a happy, energetic little guy who loves:* Going for walks* Riding in the car* Playing with toys* Exploring and joining in on adventuresHe is very intelligent and a quick learner.
Read more about Pierre Jacques
In his foster home, he is:* Doing great with potty training (always expect a learning curve when adjusting to new environments)* Fully mastering “Sit”* Progressing nicely with crate trainingPierre enjoys the company of other animals and gets along well with both dogs and cats. If a cat runs, he may try to join the chase, but it’s all in playful fun.Pierre is also a vocal little guy and can be barky and talkative, especially when he’s excited or alerting you to something. Because of this, apartment living or homes with close neighbors probably aren’t the best fit.🧠 Behavior & Training NeedsLike many rescue dogs, Pierre can become fearful in unfamiliar or stressful situations, especially at the veterinarian and during grooming. When scared, he may become defensive and nippy. He will need:* An adopter who understands canine body language and recognizes his fear signals* Continued positive reinforcement training and confidence building* A calm, patient home that can safely manage veterinary and grooming visits* Ongoing structure, exercise, and mental enrichmentDespite these challenges, Pierre is incredibly sweet in his everyday environment and thrives when he feels safe, understood, and included in the family.✂️ Grooming NeedsPierre will require professional grooming every 4â"6 weeks. 19. Button
Adult · Male · Schnauzer / Wirehaired Fox Terrier / Mixed · 33 mi from Hartley

Meet Button 🐾Button is a handsome young wire-haired terrier/Schnauzer mix, 26lbs, around 2â"3 years old, with gorgeous golden-hazel eyes, a soft white chest and an adorable little white mohawk that fits his goofy personality perfectly. Please read Button’s full bio before applying, as he has some specific needs and we’re looking for a home that will truly be the right fit for him.One really important thing to know about Button: he probably isn’t going to “show” well at a first meet.Button can be insecure with new people, and it often takes meeting someone a time or two before you really get to see who he is.
Read more about Button
We don’t want someone to meet him once, see a nervous or unsure dog and assume that’s his personality.Once Button decides you’re safe and lets his guard down, he’s a completely different dog. He’s goofy, affectionate, loyal, talkative and has SO much personality.Button’s home requirements:• A securely fenced yard• Another playful dog in the home• An active adopter committed to regular walks, hikes and exercise• No apartments• No young children• Experienced, patient and dog-savvy adopters• Someone willing to give him time to build trust instead of expecting an instant connectionThese things are important for Button and aren’t just preferences. We’ve gotten to know him well and know what kind of environment he needs to be happy and successful.Button loves being part of the action. Walks around the neighborhood, trail hikes, adventures with his people… he needs that in his life. Regular exercise is really important for him. If he doesn’t get enough walks, hikes and opportunities to get out and use his brain, he can become anxious and restless. At home, he’s actually a pretty chill guy when those needs are being met. He loves lounging on his back with all four legs in the air, hanging out with his people and soaking up attention. And Button “talks.” 😂 He makes all kinds of funny little sounds and chatter when he’s excited or wants your attention. He definitely has opinions and isn’t shy about sharing them. He’s also VERY smart. He figured out the dog door almost immediately and settled into his foster home’s routine quickly. He is potty trained, although any dog can have a learning curve in a new home, and he is pretty well crate trained.Button does have some insecurities that his future family needs to understand. He can become uncomfortable or overstimulated in certain situations and has previously nipped toward joggers who unexpectedly ran toward him on walks. He is muzzle trained for situations where some extra management is appropriate. His muzzle is simply a safety tool that allows him to still get out and enjoy life while setting him up for success.Because of his sensitivities, Button is not appropriate for a home with young children. He needs a more predictable environment with people who can understand his body language, respect his boundaries and advocate for him.The biggest thing we want people to understand is that the Button you meet on day one probably isn’t the Button you’ll know once he feels safe with you.He may not immediately crawl into your lap or convince you that you’re his new best friend at a meet and greet. Give him a little time. Once you’re one of his people, you get the funny, affectionate, quirky little guy his foster family knows and loves.Button isn’t going to be the right dog for every home, and that’s okay. We’re looking for the home that understands what he needs and will appreciate the incredibly smart, fun and loyal dog underneath those initial insecurities. To be considered for Button, please submit a detailed adoption application so we can help make sure it’s the right match for everyone.Apply at: www.K9ppr.org

Adopting a dog in Hartley
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
