Looking for a lap dog? Jackson might just be your perfect match!
This sweet boy absolutely loves lying on your lap, soaking up affection, and simply being close to his person. He’s the kind of dog who would be perfectly content spending a quiet afternoon curled up with you, keeping you company while you read, watch television, or simply enjoy the day.
Jackson has the sweetest disposition. He barks appropriately, does reasonably well on a leash, and has that wonderful, easygoing personality that makes him such a pleasure to have around.
We think Jackson would be an especially wonderful companion for someone who lives a quieter lifestyle, someone retired, or anyone looking for a loving little lap dog to share their days with.
At 8 years young, Jackson has so much love left to give. He’s not asking for much. Just a soft place to land, a lap to curl up on, and someone who will love him as much as he’ll love them.
There’s something incredibly special about an older dog who simply wants to be loved. No grand expectations, no complicated demands, just the beautiful gift of companionship.
Jackson may not be the youngest gentleman in the room, but he just might be the most devoted. ❤️
Could you be the lucky person who gives this sweet English gentleman his happily ever after?

2. Jack formerly Gomez
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog

Hi, everybody! Guess what?! I've left my shelter name, Gomez, behind and am now going by Jack. I’m just 12 weeks old, and last week I left the shelter with my littermates to start a brand-new adventure with ShepHeroes! I have a lot to learn about this big, exciting world, so I’m going to need a little time to get my paws on the ground before I can tell you all about myself. After leaving the shelter, I spent a night at a foster home in Sacramento with Pumkin and Larry Munster, got a bath and nail trims, and then headed off to my next adventure in San Jose. Then I lived as the solo puppy good life with a whole tribe of friendly German Shepherds who welcomed me in! I even got to go on a pack walk, all safe and cozy in my foster mom's doggie backpack.

My first foster home in SJ was for a few days, while I waited for my intended, and current, foster family to be ready to take me to their house. So I'm now living with a retriever and a ShepHeroes alum and a baby. I absolutely love snuggles and exploring everything around me! My meds helped me recover from kennel cough, which I caught at the shelter. I’ve got lots of growing, playing, and exploring ahead, and I’ll be back soon with more puppy news! Love,Your newest little ShepHeroes recruit

3. Larry Munster
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog

Hi, everybody! I’m just 12 weeks old, and I arrived at ShepHeroes with my littermates Pumkin and Jack, aka Gomez! We’re starting a brand-new adventure, and I’m pretty sure lots of exciting things are ahead. My foster family decided to call me Larry Munster, adding Larry to my shelter name. I’ve settled in, and I've even gone to my foster mom's office with her, so I’ll have more to share once I’ve had a chance to explore, play, and show everyone what makes me special. I love cuddles, have the softest coat per my foster, and love to follow her around the house. I'm working on potty training, crate training, and sleeping through the night.
Read more about Larry Munster
We spent our first night out of the shelter with a foster family, getting baths and desperately needed nail trims. After a good night's sleep with lots of playtime with each other and the resident shepherds, plus another foster dog, four-year-old Daisy, who watched over us like all good female shepherds. I adored my bath whereas my littermates weren't so sure it was a good thing. We met Daisy's forever family the morning we were getting back on the road to head to our next foster homes, as she was getting adopted.I'm the only puppy in my current foster home, and I love all the attention and snuggles. To grow, I'm taking lots of naps, as puppies need 16-18 hours of sleep. But I'll be seeing Pumkin et al. frequently for playdates. Stay tuned! My story is just beginning!

4. Pumkin
Puppy · Female · German Shepherd Dog

Guess who just arrived at ShepHeroes?! Hi, everyone! I’m a 12-week-old German Shepherd puppy, and I busted out of the shelter with my littermates, Jack (aka Gomez) and Larry Munster, to land in rescue! We’ve spent the last week settling in, so there’s lots more to share about our little puppy adventures. The three of us spent a night in a Sacramento foster home, waiting for our ride to San Jose the next day. Baths, nail trims - snuggles made those weird experiences better. Larry Munster enjoyed his bath, though. Oh, and about those names you might see floating around? Those were shelter-given names, and honestly, we hadn't bothered learning them! We hear one of the perks of landing in a foster home is that our foster families get to pick our rescue names.
Read more about Pumkin
How fun is that?! And in the spirit of Halloween, I kept my name Pumkin because I'm just a sweet little pumkin. I am brave, independent, and a steady explorer. I easily incorporate into new households with their shepherds and other dogs, steady for sure. I love attention and snuggles like all pups, but I will also take my toy and happily hang out in my pen area during the day or in my crate all night. My foster family has two resident shepherds, and extended family has a couple of corgis; we have regular playdates. I also got to take a stroller ride with my own personal driver during the Fall Festival; my driver said I was such a well-behaved pup. I didn't need to jump out or explore because people kept coming to say sweet things to me and pet me throughout our time there. Stay tuned, friends! I'll keep giving you updates as I get to go on more adventures.

Rocket is excellent in the car, traveling for several hours while napping in his travel crate. He's also good on leash, taking short excursions around his neighborhood courtyard. While waiting for his new foster family, Rocket spent a couple of hours with new friends—including our adoptable Joey—and showed how steady and adaptable he is. 11. Snow
Adult · Female · Siberian Husky (short coat)

Snow is a sweet-natured, affectionate dog who loves people and enjoys being part of the family. She has been wonderful with adults and children and has gotten along extremely well other dogs her own size. She tends to be quite submissive. Her previous foster reported while staying in my backyard, she rarely barked, dug holes, or was destructive.

Snow’s one serious placement requirement is that she must be the only pet in a home without cats or other small animals. She has a very high prey drive. Her behavior appears to be related to prey drive rather than aggression toward people or larger dogs, as she has consistently been affectionate and social with both. Snow is delightful and her spunky attitude makes her charm quite endearing!

12. Chip
Young · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat)

We love Chip, and we know you will, too!
Chip is estimated to be 7 months old, and he is a sweet and playful guy who is a little ray of sunshine. He has a happy personality and is quick to cover your face in kisses. He is a moderate-energy guy who would love a family to shower him with love. Chip weighs about 7-8lbs and we think he is pretty much fully grown.
Read more about Chip
Chip came to us from our local animal shelter after he was found as a stray. He arrived with his brother Dale, who has since been adopted, and the boys sat at the shelter for weeks with little adoption interest. We were more than happy to have Chip come to us, and he is now eager to find his fur-ever family.
Chip is the perfect mix of active and chill. He loves his daily walks and playing with his toys, but he is also happy to keep you company on the couch for downtime at home. He is a true lover boy who just loves quality time spent with the people he loves. In classic Chihuahua fashion, he loves to get cozy under the covers, and his favorite nap spot is in his foster mom's closet. He is a big cuddler and would love to be your snuggle buddy for cold Autumn nights. Chip has some basic training down, but would benefit from continuing to work on his training with his new family.
Chip loves other dogs and would adore having another playful pup to play with. He also could do well as an only dog, as long as he gets to have lots of dog friends. We have not seen Chip around cats, but he may do well with dog-savvy cats after a slow introduction and with proper supervision. Chip could be a wonderful addition to a family with kids 10 years and older.
Chip has been doing very well with his house-training using pee pads. He isn't the biggest fan of being in a crate, but has been doing well being left in a bathroom or bedroom for short periods during the day. He has done well living in an apartment with proper daily exercise.
Chip is such a sweet little guy, and he can't wait to be your new BFF. If he sounds like the pup for you, submit an application today!
Chip's adoption fee is $350.

13. Zoey
Adult (4 years 1 month) · Female · Siberian Husky (short coat)

Meet Zoey! A Pretty Face, a Beautiful Mask, and a Heart Full of Sweetness!
With her gorgeous face, pretty husky mask, and sweet temperament, Zoey is a beautiful girl with a curious little personality that is just beginning to shine!
Zoey loves taking in the world around her. She noticed my fan spinning, watches TV with interest, and is always peeking over the side to see what’s happening in my parents’ swimming pool. You never know what might catch this girl’s attention!
Read more about Zoey
She can be a little shy when meeting new people, but she’s curious and likes to keep an eye on what’s going on. She may not run right up to strangers to say hello, but give her a little time and patience, and I think you’ll see more and more of her sweet personality come out. She already follows me around and gives me the sweetest kisses. ❤️
Zoey has been getting along wonderfully with my mellow, easygoing husky, Dominic. She’s also been playing with my parents’ female husky/shepherd, who is twice her size! She enjoys a little playtime and then happily settles down for a nap. So far, she seems to have a nice medium energy level.
♀️ She loves going for walks and does pretty well on a leash. Like many huskies, she has a curious eye for anything that moves, especially a cat darting across the road, so she’ll need a family who understands the breed and will keep her safely leashed.
She has even learned to jump up into my Tahoe like a pro! She’s still a little unsure about jumping back out, so I help her down for now. She’s learning new things every day!
Zoey also did well on her first outing to a wine bar. She was able to experience a new environment and take it all in at her own pace. She may be a little reserved at first, but there’s a sweet, inquisitive girl in there waiting to blossom.
I think Zoey would really enjoy having a friendly, well-matched doggy companion in her new home. Another dog could give her a buddy to play with and help her continue building confidence.
Are you looking for a beautiful husky girl with a sweet soul, a curious mind, and lots of love to give? Zoey might just be your girl!
With a little patience, a loving home, and time to feel secure, I think this pretty girl is going to blossom into an amazing companion. ❤️

14. Queen Maeve
Adult (8 years) · Female · Siberian Husky (short coat)

Meet Queen Maeve, Her Royal Highness
Queen Maeve is a 90-ish-pound, long-legged, dainty-pawed queen who has graciously decided that humans may serve her—provided they understand proper royal etiquette.
She is affectionate, goofy, playful, curious, and absolutely convinced that life should include plenty of attention, adventures, and perhaps the occasional cheese tax. When she wants affection, she has no problem pressing her royal head into you to make her wishes known. She loves car rides, exploring, and being brushed like the royalty she believes herself to be.
Read more about Queen Maeve
Maeve is also a sensitive soul. She does best with calm, consistent boundaries and a predictable routine. She can become overwhelmed by social pressure, especially around other dogs, and prefers her own private space to retreat and decompress. She has made tremendous progress learning that her crate is her safe place and that humans can be trusted to give her space when she needs it.
She is not looking for a household that expects instant perfection. Her ideal family will appreciate that beneath the dramatic royal persona is a dog who is still learning how to feel completely secure in the world.
Give Her Majesty patience, structure, respect, and a little cheese, and she will reward you with goofy antics, affection, loyalty, and approximately 90 pounds of emotional support queen.

Adult (4 years 1 month) · Male · Alaskan Malamute (short coat)

Freddie Fazbear is a happy, loving, and affectionate dog with a heart as big as he is. This gentle giant is kind and respectful with both people and other dogs, making friends wherever he goes. While he certainly enjoys attention, he has a wonderfully easygoing nature and excellent manners.
Freddie loves long outdoor walks and is a pleasure on leash, rarely pulling as he explores the world by your side. He also enjoys playing with other dogs and would be thrilled to have canine friends to romp around with.
Read more about Freddie Fazbear
One of Freddie’s most charming qualities is his calm demeanor. He isn’t much of a howler, so your neighbors are likely to appreciate him as much as you do. When he does speak up, it’s with a beautiful, deep bark that he uses sparingly.
Like many intelligent dogs, Freddie can be determined and persistent when he has his mind set on something. Fortunately, that determination is paired with a sweet, loving temperament that makes him a wonderful companion.
If you're looking for a loyal, gentle, and fun-loving best friend, Freddie may be the perfect match.

16. Patches
Young · Male · Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Loyal, affectionate, and goofy - Patches is the complete package!
Patches is estimated to be around 2 years old, and he is a darling boy looking for a special family to call his own. He has the funniest little personality and is a comical guy who loves his people. Patches is a moderate-energy guy who would thrive in a quiet home with a family to shower him with love. Patches is the perfect small/medium size, weighing around 20lbs.
Read more about Patches
Patches was found as a stray and brought to a high-kill shelter in Central California. He was scared and shut down at the shelter, and the volunteers knew he would blossom outside the shelter environment. We were able to save him, and he has been charming us with his loving personality ever since.
Patches is a sweet and sensitive boy who bonds strongly with his people. He can be unsure of strangers, especially in his foster home, but we have found he can make new human friends with the help of treats and meeting in a neutral place. Once you become his friend, he will want to be in your lap and to get lots of love. Patches needs a family who will advocate for him and make sure he is slowly introduced to new people, or kept in his crate when guests are over. Patches has been doing great in a home with a foster mom and dad, and appears to love them equally. He joined them for a holiday weekend trip to their mountain cabin, and he did great meeting their adult kids. He loved having the space to run in the great outdoors! Patches loves his toys and daily walks. He is a pretty good walker, but will sometimes bark at other dogs when he is excited. He has some basic manners training and has great manners around the house (although he does enjoy stealing socks).
Patches has done very well living with other dogs. He does best with other playful dogs, as he can be persistent about wanting to play. He also could do well as an only dog. Patches currently lives with a cat, but is pretty obnoxious about trying to get the cat to play with him. Unless your cat would like a dog to play with, he would do best in a kitty-free home. Patches needs an adult-only home.
Patches is house and crate trained. He is content hanging out in his crate during the day and sleeps through the night in there. Since he isn't a big fan of guests, he is happy to hang out in his crate in the bedroom when people he doesn't know come over. Patches takes his role as the house alarm system seriously, so he wouldn't be a good fit to live in an apartment.
Patches takes a daily anti-anxiety medication to help him with his general anxiety. It has helped him tremendously and is a fairly affordable medication (around $20 for a month's supply).
Patches is such a sweet guy and is going to bring so much joy and love to his new family. If you think that might be you, submit an application today!
Patches's adoption fee is $300.

Someone looking for a big goofy bff to tag along for coffee runs, walks, little adventures, and then come home and hang out on the couch. Sully really just wants to be included in life, and honestly, with that big drooly face, it’s pretty hard not to include him. Meet Baja — Our Golden Boy! Baja is an approximately 8-month-old husky mix who is as beautiful on the inside as he is gorgeous on the outside. This charming young boy is friendly, loving, and incredibly sweet — and you'd never guess that his story began with being dumped in a city park and then rejected when his owners were given the opportunity to take him back. Baja is great in the car, does well in his crate, and is beginning to understand basic commands. 21. Emerald Green
Senior · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat)

Meet Emerald Green
Emerald is an approximately 10-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua who has already survived more than most dogs ever should.
When his owner went to the hospital and never returned, Emerald was left behind inside the home. He survived there on his own for nearly a month before out-of-state family arrived to manage the property and discovered him.
They did not even know she had a dog.
There were no records. No one knew his name. No one knew his history. What they did know was that he was terrified.
The shelters were closed that day, the family was preparing to return home, and they brought Emerald to our veterinarian after being told repeatedly that euthanasia might be the only option.
Our veterinarian said absolutely not.
She called us.
And Emerald became an Umbrella of Hope dog.
At first, Emerald was deeply traumatized by everything around him. New people, sudden movements, unfamiliar places and even normal household activity could send him into panic. He is still cautious, but he is making real progress.
He recently attended an adoption event and did GREAT.
That was a huge milestone for a dog who once believed the entire world was dangerous.
Emerald has also shown us something very important: once he decides someone is safe, he is capable of forming a very strong bond. He seeks comfort from the people he trusts and clearly enjoys having a person nearby. When that person leaves the room, he may even sing a few dramatic little Chihuahua songs in protest.
Despite being around 10 years old, Emerald apparently did not receive the memo that he is a senior.
This little man can RUN.
He is fast, agile and fully capable of turning “come here” into an Olympic-level event if he is feeling playful.
Emerald is in good health for his age and is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and free of parasites.
Because the outside world can still feel intimidating, he may initially have some potty accidents while learning the routine and understanding that a new home is truly his home. He needs a family willing to give him structure without pressure and patience without expectations.
Emerald does not need someone to “fix” him.
He needs someone willing to let him unfold.
Someone who understands that trust may come slowly, but when it comes, it is incredibly meaningful.
His ideal adopter will give him time to observe, decompress and decide for himself that he is safe. He may never be the dog who runs into a stranger’s arms five minutes after meeting them, and that is perfectly okay.
What he can become is deeply devoted to the person who earns his trust.
Emerald lost everything he knew without understanding why. He survived alone. He was almost written off before anyone had the chance to learn who he really was.
Now he just needs someone willing to give him the final piece of his story:
A home where nobody leaves him behind again.
Please don’t overlook an older boy because he needs a little extra time.
Sometimes the most frightened hearts have the most love left to give.

22. Pixie
Adult (9 months) · Female · Siberian Husky / Mixed (short coat)

Meet Pixie — Your Dream Dog Is Waiting!
Some dogs have a way of capturing your heart almost immediately, and Pixie is one of them!
This beautiful girl spent 6–8 weeks on her own in Stockton, living alongside other dogs in a large park. Despite her difficult start, she warms up to people quickly and is wonderfully charming, friendly, and affectionate. She’s also incredibly smart and picks up commands quickly — a girl with beauty
and
brains!
Read more about Pixie
Pixie has already shown what a lovely companion she can be. At her foster home, she happily slept in bed with her foster and the other dogs. She gets along beautifully with canine friends and loves to play. She’s the kind of dog who seems to understand that life is finally getting better, and she’s ready to embrace every bit of it.
Because Pixie spent time living on the streets, she’ll need some patient guidance as she learns to navigate leash walks and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But at just about 10 months old, she’s at the perfect age to learn, grow, and blossom into an incredible companion. With a little encouragement, consistency, and love, she’ll be ready to take on the world — and bond so deeply with her person that it will be hard to imagine she ever had a different life.
Pixie is about 10 months old, weighing in at around 55 pounds, and she carries her size elegantly.
We simply cannot say enough wonderful things about this sweet girl. She’s beautiful, bright, social, playful, and full of promise. Now she needs someone willing to help her discover just how wonderful life can be.
Come meet Pixie!
We think you’ll fall in love, too, and understand why everyone who meets her agrees: this girl is truly one of a kind.

24. Peridot GREEN
Senior · Female · Poodle (Miniature) / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat)

Meet PERIDOT
Peridot is an approximately 7-year-old, 12-pound mixed-breed girl—possibly a Dachshund/Poodle mix—who is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and free of parasites.
She also happens to be one of those dogs who makes it very easy to fall in love.Peridot is sweet, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she is close to her person. Her tail seems to have only one setting: wagging. Mornings are her favorite because that means she gets to see her people again, and she greets them with the happiest little wiggles.
She is potty trained, crate trained, and a very fast learner. She sleeps peacefully through the night and has shown no food aggression.
Read more about Peridot GREEN
She gets along well with other small dogs, but given the choice, Peridot would probably rather be curled up next to her human on the couch watching TV.
Peridot does have a medical condition that her future family should understand. She has been diagnosed with low-grade mammary adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer affecting the mammary glands. Her veterinarian estimates that she may have another 1–5 years, although every dog's journey is different. Her mammary glands and any changes in her masses will need continued monitoring so that her comfort and quality of life remain the priority. Umbrella of Hope is committed to Peridot's well-being and will cover the cost of euthanasia when the time comes and it is no longer kind to ask her to stay. She deserves to live out her days surrounded by love, comfort, and all the good things life has to offer.
And Peridot?
She is still her same happy, loving little self.
She wants to go for walks, snuggle up with her favorite people, collect all the treats, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being someone's beloved little dog. Her diagnosis hasn't changed her sunny personality or her desire to be part of a family.
Peridot would be a wonderful match for someone looking for a devoted little companion who enjoys a predictable routine, gets along with other small dogs, has excellent house manners, and thinks the best seat in the house is the one directly beside you.
Adopting Peridot means opening your heart to a dog whose future may be uncertain—but whose capacity to love is not. She doesn't need someone to feel sorry for her. She needs someone who sees the happy, affectionate little girl she is today and wants to make her days as wonderful as possible.
There are walks to take, cuddles to share, treats to enjoy, and so much love still to give.Peridot is waiting for someone to look at her and say, “That's my girl.”

And he was such a good boy, taking treats and learning to shake. Joey also went to Geisthaus Brewing Company for a Brewery Manners class with Wholistic Canine and was a super good boy at the Citrus Heights Food Plaza's Halloween event. He'll be back to low-key activities and crate confinement for a few days, but this time to recover from his neuter surgery. His surgical incision has healed, and he’s said goodbye to his e-cone. He’s also been practicing his vacation skills! Over Labor Day weekend, Joey joined his foster family for a getaway to Tahoe, where he rode beautifully in the car and enjoyed the mountain air from the deck. What a trooper!Joey’s journey began with a serious fracture of his right femur, broken into multiple fragments, along with an infected open wound. Thanks to the quick response of Hitchcock Road Animal Services, the generosity of our friends at @UCDavisFractureProgram, and a team of dedicated volunteers who arranged transport from Salinas to Davis in just hours, Joey got the urgent medical care he needed. Two plates were used to repair his femur, and he headed to his foster home on August 29 to begin his recovery. The road to healing called for strict crate rest, but Joey has made the most of his recovery. He’s mastered crate and potty training, discovered the joys of chew toys (especially while shedding his baby teeth!), and shown us just how much personality can shine through, even when a puppy has to take it easy. Now, as Joey has healed, we’re excited for everyone to meet this wonderful boy. He’s overcome a lot in his short life, and his future is looking brighter every day. His next big adventure? Finding a forever family who will love him as much as he deserves! Want to help Joey on his road to recovery? You can send toys and treats through our Chewy or Amazon wish lists, donate via Venmo at @shepheroes, or use the donate button next to his bio at shepheroes.org/adopt.Every bit of support helps Joey get one step closer to his happily ever after! We continue to care for Otti, who has been with us for 9 months, has undergone two abdominal surgeries, and was recently diagnosed with EPI.Have you seen our YouTube channel? In his foster home, he is:* Doing great with potty training (always expect a learning curve when adjusting to new environments)* Fully mastering “Sit”* Progressing nicely with crate trainingPierre enjoys the company of other animals and gets along well with both dogs and cats. Meet Miffy — Her Miffyness! ❤️
You’ll be amazed by how much fun, mischief, and personality can be packed into one tiny 35-pound Husky girl!
Meet Miffy, affectionately known as Her Miffyness—a mini whirlwind who never knows what she should do first. Should she stick her head (and somehow part of her body!) into the dog-food canister? Tear up envelopes and make confetti? Or stop everything for kisses? With Miff, the answer is usually ALL OF THE ABOVE.
But behind all that adorable mischief is a remarkable survivor.
Read more about Miffy
Miff was on the euthanasia list at a Central Valley shelter, emaciated and scared to death. Today, she is a completely different dog. She has blossomed into a little Norsled leader who loves everyone in her foster home and is discovering what it means to feel safe, loved, and wanted.
Miffy may take a minute to trust you. But once you make her list, you’re in for good—and you’ll have a devoted pal forever. ❤️
She’s still working on putting a few extra pounds onto her beautiful petite frame, and she’s already showing us just how much life and love she has to give.
Miffy is around 1-1/2 to 2 years, fully vetted, full of joy, and ready to find her forever family.

He’s potty trained, calm in the house, and past the destructive puppy stage. No separation anxiety, either. He takes treats gently and is just an all-around happy little guy.
Loud noises make him nervous, so busy streets aren’t his favorite. He’d much rather enjoy quieter walks and adventures.

Adopting a dog in Napa County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
