1. Daisy
Young (3 years) · Female · Dachshund / Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 93 mi from Santa Rosa

Meet Daisy!
At just 28 lbs, Daisy is a little bundle of sweetness with a big heart! She’s approximately 2–3 years old, and while her breed is anyone’s guess, her wonderful personality is no mystery.
Daisy is a friendly, social, easygoing girl who loves being around her people. She’s gentle and relaxed with both people and dogs, and has done wonderfully with the dogs she’s met so far. She’s even discovering the fun of playing tug-of-war with her canine friends!
Read more about Daisy
She’s affectionate without being demanding and loves being close to her humans. Belly rubs, cuddles, doggy kisses (she might even try to sneak you a little kiss on the lips!), and simply hanging out together are right up her alley.
Daisy enjoys walks, car rides, running at the park, and rolling around in the grass. She’s also a lovely houseguest: fully potty trained, crate trained, sleeps well through the night, and is beginning to enjoy playing independently with her toys.
She’s not particularly food-motivated and would much rather have your company, but peanut butter, cheese, or a little broth on her kibble can certainly get her attention!
And good news for cat lovers: Daisy has been tested with cats in a home environment and passed her cat test!
Daisy would do well in an active household, with or without another friendly dog. She’s an adaptable, affectionate girl who would love a family to call her own.
If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle, 28-lb companion who will happily share your walks, your couch, and probably a few kisses, Daisy might just be your girl! ❤️

2. Remington
Senior (9 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 76 mi from Santa Rosa

At 10 years old, Remington has settled into foster care beautifully and is showing everyone what a great companion a senior GSP can be. He’s easygoing, has a good personality, and gets along well with just about everyone he meets.
Remington enjoys his daily walks, playing with toys, spending time with his people, and hanging out with other dogs. He’s also a big fan of car rides and is happy to come along for the adventure. His favorite toys are stuffed animals that make noise—although he’s not particularly picky about which one!
Read more about Remington
Remi is house-trained and knows sit, stay, and down. He’s also learning that the crate can be a comfortable place to relax and has recently started going in on his own to rest. When left alone for short periods, he settles calmly within a few minutes and does well staying inside the house.
On walks, Remington may wander from side to side at the beginning, and then he gets into the rhythm of things. His current daily exercise routine is just right for him.
Remington enjoys people and gets along well with children. He has been around kids ranging in age from 9 to 18 and has done well with them. He also gets along well with other dogs and could be happy as either an only dog or with a canine companion.
One important consideration is fencing. Remington has jumped a fence in the past, so he will need a tall, sturdy, secure fence at his new home. He hasn’t attempted to jump the fence lately in foster care, but his new family should take this seriously, especially as he gets adjusted to his new digs.
Remington would do especially well with someone who works from home, is retired, or is semi-retired and can spend plenty of time with him. He’s a well-settled, easygoing guy who enjoys companionship without being demanding.
If you’re looking for a mature GSP with a great personality, good manners, and plenty of life left to enjoy, Remington may be your guy.
Adoption fee: $250 for seniors (nine years and up). If you are a prior adopter, you can add a Great Senior Pooch to your family for free! Your adoption includes a post-adoption training allowance.
Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: https://norcalgsprescue.org/adoption-questionnaire/

3. Buddy
Senior (10 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 76 mi from Santa Rosa

Buddy is a senior GSP with a youthful spirit, a big personality, and an even bigger love of being close to his people. At 57 pounds, this sweet, affectionate guy is happiest when he’s right beside you—preferably snuggled up as close as physically possible. He gives intense little kisses, loves attention, and would happily make himself your full-time cuddle buddy.
Read more about Buddy
Don’t let his senior status fool you! Buddy is active and playful. He enjoys walks, indoor ball games, and especially his stuffed toys. Before his neuter, he was enjoying 1.5-mile walks with plenty of hills, so he can keep up with an active household. He pulls a little on leash but is manageable, and he knows or is learning sit, wait, and come.
Buddy is wonderfully easygoing with the world around him. He has done great with dogs, cats, and children and isn’t bothered by normal household noises. He lives with both an energetic dog and cats, and he simply ignores the cats—even sleeping next to them in bed. When his canine foster brother gets pushy or barky, Buddy doesn’t engage; he just carries on with his day. He’s also been great with an energetic, loud, and unpredictable 8-year-old and a calmer 10-year-old kid. He loves car rides and hasn’t shown an interest in chasing squirrels.
He’s house-trained and has done well having the run of the house while his foster family is away for up to eight hours. He may howl when his people first leave or when he can see them outside, but once they’re actually gone, he settles down. This has continued to improve since Buddy first arrived (although an apartment or other close-quarters living situation probably isn’t the best fit). He also did fine in a crate at the veterinary clinic.
Now, let’s talk about Buddy’s special talents. He is an expert at getting under the covers. You can barricade the bed and tuck everything in, but somehow he’ll find his way beneath the blankets—and may leave a little drool on your pillow for good measure. Consider it part of the Buddy experience!
Buddy prefers to have a say in how he’s handled and isn’t a fan of being restrained, especially at the vet. He’ll need sedation for nail trims to keep the experience as stress-free as possible. He can also be protective of things in his mouth and isn’t always cooperative about taking medication, so a patient approach and a little creativity may be helpful. Understanding his preferences and giving him space when needed will help him feel comfortable and secure. Buddy has been diagnosed with mitral valve disease/heart murmur (does not need medications) and has some age-related lumps and bumps. He recently had a dental cleaning and is all spruced up for his next home!
Overall, Buddy is a lovely, affectionate, easygoing companion with plenty of personality and a real talent for snuggling. He’s good with dogs, cats, and kids, enjoys his walks and toys, and is happy to share his home with his favorite people. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who will keep you company, make you laugh, and probably steal your pillow, Buddy could be just the dog for you. Just remember to leave room under the covers!

4. Alvin
Adult (3 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 76 mi from Santa Rosa

At 4 years old and 61 pounds of pure muscle, Alvin is a GSP in his prime: smart, athletic and ready for adventure. He also has an excellent “off switch” and a soft spot for a good snuggle.
Inside the house, Alvin is calm and very affectionate. His foster mom says he “melts in your hands” when you scratch his ears. He loves to cuddle, nap, and be close to his people. Once he’s outside, his (typical GSP) energetic side comes out. He loves long walks and would be a great partner for a runner, hiker, or anyone who wants a four-legged companion on outdoor adventures.
Read more about Alvin
Alvin LOVES people. Kids, teens, grandparents, even a party of 20+: he’s happy to meet everyone. Our trainer has been impressed by his manners: he greeted her politely without jumping, sat when asked, and was curious about her treats without being pushy. She called him “extremely biddable,” so he should be a joy to train with food and affection as rewards.
He also adores his foster family’s Sphynx cat. He’s curious about cats outside and has a strong GSP prey drive for birds and squirrels, so a feline sibling could work depending on the cat.
Alvin’s road to rescue was a hard one. He was found injured on the side of a road, then moved between several short-term foster homes. With all that stress, he had a rough start with other (resident) dogs. Our trainer describes him as “a mature and skilled dog communicator”: he’s clear about when he needs space, and he does best with people who read and respect his signals.
Alvin’s ideal home:
Active people who want an athletic dog for walks, runs, outdoor fun, and are able to keep up with his energy
Adopters who understand dog body language, or want to learn, and will keep up with training (leash skills, recall, impulse control)
Only dog at this time. A second dog in the home may be considered in the future
A tall, secure fence (he has cleared 6′ fences!) or a jump-deterrent like a coyote roller
Alvin has been through a lot. What he needs now is a stable home where he can settle in and be the loving, cuddly companion he already is.
Other notes: Alvin is likely able to live successfully with cats. Dog-savvy kids are preferred. He is able to be around other dogs if supervised but not yet ready to live with another dog.
Adoption fee: $425 (includes a post-adoption training allowance). Training will be required.
Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: https://norcalgsprescue.org/adoption-questionnaire/

6. Jack formerly Gomez
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog · 64 mi from Santa Rosa

Hi, everybody! Guess what?! I've left my shelter name, Gomez, behind and am now going by Jack. I’m just 12 weeks old, and last week I left the shelter with my littermates to start a brand-new adventure with ShepHeroes! I have a lot to learn about this big, exciting world, so I’m going to need a little time to get my paws on the ground before I can tell you all about myself. After leaving the shelter, I spent a night at a foster home in Sacramento with Pumkin and Larry Munster, got a bath and nail trims, and then headed off to my next adventure in San Jose. Then I lived as the solo puppy good life with a whole tribe of friendly German Shepherds who welcomed me in! I even got to go on a pack walk, all safe and cozy in my foster mom's doggie backpack.
Read more about Jack formerly Gomez
My first foster home in SJ was for a few days, while I waited for my intended, and current, foster family to be ready to take me to their house. So I'm now living with a retriever and a ShepHeroes alum and a baby. I absolutely love snuggles and exploring everything around me! My meds helped me recover from kennel cough, which I caught at the shelter. I’ve got lots of growing, playing, and exploring ahead, and I’ll be back soon with more puppy news! 7. Larry Munster
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog · 64 mi from Santa Rosa

Hi, everybody! I’m just 12 weeks old, and I arrived at ShepHeroes with my littermates Pumkin and Jack, aka Gomez! We’re starting a brand-new adventure, and I’m pretty sure lots of exciting things are ahead. My foster family decided to call me Larry Munster, adding Larry to my shelter name. I’ve settled in, and I've even gone to my foster mom's office with her, so I’ll have more to share once I’ve had a chance to explore, play, and show everyone what makes me special. I love cuddles, have the softest coat per my foster, and love to follow her around the house. I'm working on potty training, crate training, and sleeping through the night.
Read more about Larry Munster
We spent our first night out of the shelter with a foster family, getting baths and desperately needed nail trims. After a good night's sleep with lots of playtime with each other and the resident shepherds, plus another foster dog, four-year-old Daisy, who watched over us like all good female shepherds. I adored my bath whereas my littermates weren't so sure it was a good thing. We met Daisy's forever family the morning we were getting back on the road to head to our next foster homes, as she was getting adopted.I'm the only puppy in my current foster home, and I love all the attention and snuggles. To grow, I'm taking lots of naps, as puppies need 16-18 hours of sleep. But I'll be seeing Pumkin et al. frequently for playdates. Stay tuned! My story is just beginning!

8. Pumkin
Puppy · Female · German Shepherd Dog · 64 mi from Santa Rosa

Guess who just arrived at ShepHeroes?! Hi, everyone! I’m a 12-week-old German Shepherd puppy, and I busted out of the shelter with my littermates, Jack (aka Gomez) and Larry Munster, to land in rescue! We’ve spent the last week settling in, so there’s lots more to share about our little puppy adventures. The three of us spent a night in a Sacramento foster home, waiting for our ride to San Jose the next day. Baths, nail trims - snuggles made those weird experiences better. Larry Munster enjoyed his bath, though. Oh, and about those names you might see floating around? Those were shelter-given names, and honestly, we hadn't bothered learning them! We hear one of the perks of landing in a foster home is that our foster families get to pick our rescue names.
Read more about Pumkin
How fun is that?! And in the spirit of Halloween, I kept my name Pumkin because I'm just a sweet little pumkin. I am brave, independent, and a steady explorer. I easily incorporate into new households with their shepherds and other dogs, steady for sure. I love attention and snuggles like all pups, but I will also take my toy and happily hang out in my pen area during the day or in my crate all night. My foster family has two resident shepherds, and extended family has a couple of corgis; we have regular playdates. I also got to take a stroller ride with my own personal driver during the Fall Festival; my driver said I was such a well-behaved pup. I didn't need to jump out or explore because people kept coming to say sweet things to me and pet me throughout our time there. Stay tuned, friends! I'll keep giving you updates as I get to go on more adventures.

18. Lucy
Adult (7 years 1 month) · Female · Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat) · 49 mi from Santa Rosa

Lucy is a 7–8‑year‑old, 12‑lb female dog who was scheduled for euthanasia on September 23, 2026. A last‑minute social media post prompted two Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteers to intervene, allowing her to leave the shelter safely. And what a change! She is now a fun, goofy, food loving dog that will control you with her chocolately eyes!
Read more about Lucy
Lucy is a quiet, gentle dog who enjoys a nice quiet home; she's hanging with two other chihuahuas and does great with them. Lucy did meet some cats and no one seemed to care so yes, we'd say she can live with cats! She enjoys spending long periods in the garden and relaxing in the sun. Indoors, she likes laps, soft sofas, and rearranging throw pillows.
She is potty trained, uses a doggy door, and will use a potty pad at night. Lucy walks well on leash and enjoys slow neighborhood strolls. She may initially appear aloof for a few minutes, but she warms up quickly and accepts gentle affection. She rides well in the car.
Lucy is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and recently had a wellness exam. Based on her condition, her age estimate was revised from 10 years to 7–8 years old. She also had a major dental procedure and is now fully ready for adoption.
A yard not required but sunspots a must :)
Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial veterinary and other expenses in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, we request a tax-deductible donation for each adoption. The suggested donation for Lucy is $300.
If you are interested in adopting Lucy, please complete our online adoption application at

19. Kenzie
Adult · Female · Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 93 mi from Santa Rosa

Meet Kenzie (aka Lyngcha) – A Brave Little Soul Looking for Her Best Friend ❤️
Some dogs wear their hearts on their sleeves. Kenzie who her fosters have been calling Lyngcha had to learn it was safe to have one.
When Kenzie first arrived in foster care, she was completely shut down. She spent weeks hiding in her crate and was too frightened to interact with people or even go outside during the day. Watching her slowly learn to trust has been one of the most rewarding journeys we’ve ever witnessed.
Today, Lyngcha is a happy, playful, affectionate young girl who greets each day with a wagging tail and an adorable smile.
Read more about Kenzie
She absolutely
loves other dogs
and truly thrives with a confident canine companion. Whether she’s wrestling, playing tug-of-war, following her doggy friends around the house, or snuggling up beside them, having another friendly dog helps her feel safe and brings out her joyful personality.
Lyngcha is also very food motivated, making her eager to learn. She’s already picking up basic commands and is excited to keep learning with her future family.
She loves going for walks and approaches every adventure with puppy-like enthusiasm, taking in all the exciting smells and sights. New environments can still be a little overwhelming at first, but with patience, encouragement, and another dog by her side, her confidence continues to blossom.
Once Lyngcha bonds with her people, she’s an absolute sweetheart. She loves curling up close, resting her head on you, and soaking up affection. Her foster family even nicknamed her

21. Buddy Boy
Senior (13 years 8 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 86 mi from Santa Rosa

Buddy is a happy, spunky little guy with lots of personality! He tends to ignore other dogs and isn’t a big fan of cats, so he would be happy as an only pet or could potentially live with other calm dogs. Once Buddy warms up, he bonds strongly with his people and loves following them everywhere. He’s a great little car companion, loves being held, and is always up for some cuddles. With new people, Buddy likes to make his own decisions. Sometimes he needs a little time to warm up, while other times he decides he likes someone right away!

24. Inchworm GREEN
Adult · Male · French Bulldog / Mixed (short coat) · 81 mi from Santa Rosa

COMING SOON!
This 35 lb bowling ball 2-3 yr old Frenchie we’ve named “Inchworm” wants you to know he has that blue-dog-Frenchie itchy skin — if you listen really closely you can hear him tell you “my back itches!!!”
He’s being treated for dry, flaky itchy skin and hairloss on his back near his tail
We expect him to be available for adoption soon and would like him to go to a home who either has experience with itchy dogs and keeping them itch free OR someone who can show us they have researched and have allllllllll the resources to manage a dog with itchy skin
Frenchies are known for being genetic dumpster fires and he will be looking for a home that can afford his future medical care without question. His only known issue is his dry, itchy skin but this breed can absolutely require more vet care than the average dog
He’s a bull(dog)-in-a-china-shop personality and seems to mean no harm but we’d really like him to meet all human and dog family members because his nicknames are CRASH and BULLDOZER and he’s a solid TUB of a dog. (He has not been cat-tested but would likely run over them)
(Like he’s probably fine with more solidly built children if they like being bowling pins as a hobby He means no harm)
We recommend him for other bowling-ball type dogs or solid dogs who are bigger than him
He’s fostered in the Sacramento area and will be entertaining suitors in a few weeks — beourpet@gmail.com

25. Peridot GREEN
Senior · Female · Poodle (Miniature) / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat) · 52 mi from Santa Rosa

Meet PERIDOT
Peridot is an approximately 7-year-old, 12-pound mixed-breed girl—possibly a Dachshund/Poodle mix—who is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and free of parasites.
She also happens to be one of those dogs who makes it very easy to fall in love.Peridot is sweet, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she is close to her person. Her tail seems to have only one setting: wagging. Mornings are her favorite because that means she gets to see her people again, and she greets them with the happiest little wiggles.
She is potty trained, crate trained, and a very fast learner. She sleeps peacefully through the night and has shown no food aggression.
Read more about Peridot GREEN
She gets along well with other small dogs, but given the choice, Peridot would probably rather be curled up next to her human on the couch watching TV.
Peridot does have a medical condition that her future family should understand. She has been diagnosed with low-grade mammary adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer affecting the mammary glands. Her veterinarian estimates that she may have another 1–5 years, although every dog's journey is different. Her mammary glands and any changes in her masses will need continued monitoring so that her comfort and quality of life remain the priority. Umbrella of Hope is committed to Peridot's well-being and will cover the cost of euthanasia when the time comes and it is no longer kind to ask her to stay. She deserves to live out her days surrounded by love, comfort, and all the good things life has to offer.
And Peridot?
She is still her same happy, loving little self.
She wants to go for walks, snuggle up with her favorite people, collect all the treats, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being someone's beloved little dog. Her diagnosis hasn't changed her sunny personality or her desire to be part of a family.
Peridot would be a wonderful match for someone looking for a devoted little companion who enjoys a predictable routine, gets along with other small dogs, has excellent house manners, and thinks the best seat in the house is the one directly beside you.
Adopting Peridot means opening your heart to a dog whose future may be uncertain—but whose capacity to love is not. She doesn't need someone to feel sorry for her. She needs someone who sees the happy, affectionate little girl she is today and wants to make her days as wonderful as possible.
There are walks to take, cuddles to share, treats to enjoy, and so much love still to give.Peridot is waiting for someone to look at her and say, “That's my girl.”

26. Joey
Puppy · Male · German Shepherd Dog · 64 mi from Santa Rosa

Joey’s comeback story just keeps getting better! And he'll be hosting our table at Leash and Collar Sacramento's Annual Tricks for Treats event on Saturday, October 31st, from 10 am to 1 pm. Look for us on Q Street between 17th and 18th Streets. Joey’s world is getting bigger, and his happy personality is shining brighter every day! Eight weeks after his femur repair surgery, this resilient boy is enjoying short breaks from crate rest and rediscovering the fun of being a puppy. He loves his toys, has an impressive tug game, a wonderful recall, and an enthusiasm for treats!Joey had his first group lesson last week and also took a field trip to the feed store to check out all kinds of new smells.

And he was such a good boy, taking treats and learning to shake. Joey also went to Geisthaus Brewing Company for a Brewery Manners class with Wholistic Canine and was a super good boy at the Citrus Heights Food Plaza's Halloween event. He'll be back to low-key activities and crate confinement for a few days, but this time to recover from his neuter surgery. His surgical incision has healed, and he’s said goodbye to his e-cone. He’s also been practicing his vacation skills! Over Labor Day weekend, Joey joined his foster family for a getaway to Tahoe, where he rode beautifully in the car and enjoyed the mountain air from the deck. What a trooper!Joey’s journey began with a serious fracture of his right femur, broken into multiple fragments, along with an infected open wound. Thanks to the quick response of Hitchcock Road Animal Services, the generosity of our friends at @UCDavisFractureProgram, and a team of dedicated volunteers who arranged transport from Salinas to Davis in just hours, Joey got the urgent medical care he needed. Two plates were used to repair his femur, and he headed to his foster home on August 29 to begin his recovery. The road to healing called for strict crate rest, but Joey has made the most of his recovery. He’s mastered crate and potty training, discovered the joys of chew toys (especially while shedding his baby teeth!), and shown us just how much personality can shine through, even when a puppy has to take it easy. Now, as Joey has healed, we’re excited for everyone to meet this wonderful boy. He’s overcome a lot in his short life, and his future is looking brighter every day. His next big adventure? Finding a forever family who will love him as much as he deserves! Want to help Joey on his road to recovery? You can send toys and treats through our Chewy or Amazon wish lists, donate via Venmo at @shepheroes, or use the donate button next to his bio at shepheroes.org/adopt.Every bit of support helps Joey get one step closer to his happily ever after! We are very thankful for any support you can give as we just launched Ambra, aka Summer, to her forever home after 4 months with us while she healed from multiple surgeries. We continue to care for Otti, who has been with us for 9 months, has undergone two abdominal surgeries, and was recently diagnosed with EPI.Have you seen our YouTube channel? We would really appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on our videos of adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our new Threads account, where we share lots of news and updates about our shepherds.Since ShepHeroes is a foster-based rescue, we always need more foster homes. Many shepherds in our local shelters need a fresh start. Would you open your home and share your life to help shepherds find new families? You provide the love, and we will take care of everything else. Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Fill out the form at https://www.shepheroes.org/foster-form, and we will contact you soon. Adopting a dog with children in Santa Rosa
Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.
Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.
Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
