1. Pickle

Young (3 years 4 months) · Female · Basset Hound / Mixed · 16 mi from Sebastopol

Pickle is a beautiful black and white dog with a smooth coat, lovely ears and soulful eyes. Her breed mix is just a guess, but her relatively short legs and floopy ears suggest that she may be a basset hound mix. However, whatever her ancestry, this girl is agile and a jumper! She can easily jump over a standard baby gate. Pickle was an unclaimed stray in a local shelter and is guessed to be around 3 years old. Pickle is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. Although initially standoffish with the other dogs in her foster home, it took only about 30 minutes for her to get comfortable with the dogs and to start playing.

Read more about Pickle

However, she seems to be most comfortable around dogs her own size, or smaller. She is not fond of the family's bloodhound, but she loves their two basset hounds. She will chase the family cats. In terms of her humans, Pickle definitely prefers women to men. It took her some time to warm up to her foster dad. It is unknown, at this time, how she reacts to children. She's a good car traveler. A "homebody", Pickle is not especially outgoing and finds crowds and events stressful. If you think Pickle sounds like the companion you have been looking for, and you have a securely fenced yard, please submit an Adoption Application.

2. Jackson

Adult · Male · Dachshund / Poodle (Miniature) (medium coat) · 35 mi from Sebastopol

MEET JACKSON — OUR VERY OWN ENGLISH GENTLEMAN! ❤️

Jackson is a distinguished 8-year-old Poodle/Dachshund mix with a heart of gold, a gentle soul, and a personality that makes him so easy to love!

This handsome gentleman is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccinations, and ready to find that special someone to call his very own.

Jackson is the definition of a loyal companion. He’s gentle, affectionate, and almost always happy. He doesn’t need a life filled with excitement or adventure. What Jackson would truly love is a peaceful home, a comfortable lap, and someone who enjoys having a devoted little companion by their side.

Read more about Jackson

Looking for a lap dog? Jackson might just be your perfect match!

This sweet boy absolutely loves lying on your lap, soaking up affection, and simply being close to his person. He’s the kind of dog who would be perfectly content spending a quiet afternoon curled up with you, keeping you company while you read, watch television, or simply enjoy the day.

Jackson has the sweetest disposition. He barks appropriately, does reasonably well on a leash, and has that wonderful, easygoing personality that makes him such a pleasure to have around.

We think Jackson would be an especially wonderful companion for someone who lives a quieter lifestyle, someone retired, or anyone looking for a loving little lap dog to share their days with.

At 8 years young, Jackson has so much love left to give. He’s not asking for much. Just a soft place to land, a lap to curl up on, and someone who will love him as much as he’ll love them.

There’s something incredibly special about an older dog who simply wants to be loved. No grand expectations, no complicated demands, just the beautiful gift of companionship.

Jackson may not be the youngest gentleman in the room, but he just might be the most devoted. ❤️

Could you be the lucky person who gives this sweet English gentleman his happily ever after?

Abby is a 4 yr old, 70lb chunky snorty, shorty gal! She is sweet and friendly with everyone and could probably live in a home with kids. She is aloof around other dogs and not reactive on walks. She doesn't have a lot of stamina but enjoys a nice neighborhood stroll. 5. Cliffy

Adult (4 years 1 month) · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 49 mi from Sebastopol

Cliffy
never goes on a walk or a car ride without his emotional support spiky ball. He carries it the whole way and even keeps it close when he sleeps. And don't think you can part him from it for one measly treat! While he is very food motivated, he's done the math: this is the Bay Area, so the going rate to drop the ball is at least 3-4 treats. He's a character, and negotiating with him is half the fun.

Read more about Cliffy

Cliffy
is great with people, kids of all ages included, and he especially LOVES men! The joke is that he's a "dude's dog." He likes women too, though, which would make him an excellent wingdog for anyone who could use a charming icebreaker at the other end of the leash. Are you looking for that special someone to be in matching pajamas with on Christmas Day?
Cliffy
is here to help you! And don't forget a matching set of pajamas and an ugly Christmas sweater for him too, because this guy looks great sporting some dogwear.

Cliffy
is eager to go on his daily walks and is also great in the car for adventures farther away from home. The car is one of his favorite places to be, and he will try to convince you to take the car to go places rather than walk there. In fact, he will sometimes try to convince you to steal someone else's car, just so he doesn't have to walk the whole way.

At home,
Cliffy
has impeccable manners. While he's a strong chewer who adores his spiky ball and tasty chews, he doesn't destroy anything in the house. He is not a big barker, though if other dogs in the house start up, he will join the choir, even when he doesn't know what the song is about. He loves cuddling up next to his humans and being petted for as long as they are willing. He is also okay being left home alone for several hours and will stay in his crate even if the door is left open.
Cliffy
loves his crate, so much so, in fact, that after a walk he lets himself in and sometimes closes the door behind him. Because, manners!

Cliffy
currently lives with two female dogs, and could share his home with a well-matched female dog. If you have a spot on the couch, a spiky ball subscription, and a healthy treat budget for ball negotiations,
Cliffy
would love to meet you.

Read more about Biscuit

iscuit is such a lover. She takes a little to warm up but once she bonds she bonds quickly and shows it- she loves deeply with wiggles to match. Her potty training is going great' she learned quickly how to use the doggy door. She loves her morning walk but also is very content to do a quick potty and snuggle. She’s gotten along well with the resident dog, sometimes being a bit bossy, but at others wanting to play. She’s easy but prefers avoiding the big dogs and is choosy of small dogs. She’s very easy to handle and allows you to dress her up in cozy sweaters. She’s working on basic commands and just learned sit! When left alone it appears she’s done well- by herself and left with our resident dog. She has also shown a recent interest in toys and loves her lamb chop. She really is such a little love and someone will be very lucky to have her in their forever family.

Are you looking for an all around good boy? Meet Jimothy. He is about 9.5 pounds and 2 years old. He is a little shy to start, but gets over it in about 5 minutes and then can be your friend for life.

Jim is housetrained, loves his canine foster brother, and his human foster brother too. His short red coat is thick and soft. He loves having a lap to nap in. He is also great on leashed walks. He does OK when left alone with his canine foster brother, but is hoping for a forever home where he doesn't get left alone too much. He loves running errands with his foster mom. She is a little shy at first and will just lay on a dog bed and snooze quietly but once she warms up, she seeks affection from you.

9. Lucy

Adult (7 years 1 month) · Female · Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat) · 49 mi from Sebastopol

Lucy is a 7–8‑year‑old, 12‑lb female dog who was scheduled for euthanasia on September 23, 2026. A last‑minute social media post prompted two Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteers to intervene, allowing her to leave the shelter safely. And what a change! She is now a fun, goofy, food loving dog that will control you with her chocolately eyes!

Read more about Lucy

Lucy is a quiet, gentle dog who enjoys a nice quiet home; she's hanging with two other chihuahuas and does great with them. Lucy did meet some cats and no one seemed to care so yes, we'd say she can live with cats! She enjoys spending long periods in the garden and relaxing in the sun. Indoors, she likes laps, soft sofas, and rearranging throw pillows.

She is potty trained, uses a doggy door, and will use a potty pad at night. Lucy walks well on leash and enjoys slow neighborhood strolls. She may initially appear aloof for a few minutes, but she warms up quickly and accepts gentle affection. She rides well in the car.

Lucy is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and recently had a wellness exam. Based on her condition, her age estimate was revised from 10 years to 7–8 years old. She also had a major dental procedure and is now fully ready for adoption.

A yard not required but sunspots a must :)

10. Rocky

Adult (7 years 1 month) · Male · Jack Russell Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 49 mi from Sebastopol

Rocky is a cute Jack-Chi mix. Full disclosure: He gets his perky look from the chihuahua side, but his behavior is 100% Jack Russell. Rocky is looking for an active home with a family who can give him firm consistent discipline, plenty of play time, and an ability to see the good heart inside a feisty dog. Also no small children and no male dogs in the household please.

In his foster setting, Rocky is sweet, loving, and funny. But sadly he and the resident male dog have irreconcilable differences.

All that said ... when Rocky finds the right home, he will be your best friend forever!

Read more about Rocky

Rocky would be a great farm, ranch, or barn dog (watch). Jack Russells are famous for enjoying livestock. Got a horse? Rocky will help out around the barn or pasture!

He also thrives indoors on ear scritches and neck rubs (watch),

chilling while you work, or going out for walks in your favorite city. He is cheerful, fearless, and well trained on leash.

He is in love with his little green tennis ball & can play fetch (watch) for ... well ... a long time

He will entertain himself with games he makes up himself. Like dropping his ball into a shoe (watch) to see if he can get it back.

He will bark angrily at windshield wipers (watch) and UPS trucks, but nibble his "Mr. Lamb" toy with the tenderness of a new father.

Rocky likes both men and women, as long as they are active and confident.

Rocky

walks beautifully on a leash but does not know basic commands like "sit" or "stay'. That said, he is very treat-motivated and young enough to still learn new tricks.

Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial veterinary and other expenses in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, we request a tax-deductible donation for each adoption. The suggested donation for Rocky is $300.

Adventurous, always the first on the scene. Pearl is the biggest girl of the litter, and the only one with long, coarse hair — which seems to allude to some terrier heritage. Pearl is brave and always excited to meet new people, dogs, and cats — while also being polite enough not to overwhelm new animal friends with too much aggressive friendliness.

12. Sugar

Adult (3 years 4 months) · Female · Chihuahua / Papillon / Mixed (medium coat) · 49 mi from Sebastopol

Sugar is simply adorable. She has lots of Chihuahua

attitude and likes to bark at dogs on walks, but just to make sure they know she is coming and they should wait to meet her. She loves car rides, snuggles, playing with her canine foster sister, meal times, exploring the back yard, and giving kisses. She is slow to meet new people, but will give them a sniff. She likes meeting new dogs of all sizes.

Sugar is about 3 years old and 6 pounds. She is a fun, loving girl that wants a home where she can spend most of the time with her person(s). Another dog would be nice, but not a requirement.

Read more about Sugar

She is active, and playful, and goes on 2 mile walks every day with her larger canine foster siblings.

Sugar has GERD, Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, and takes a daily antacid to keep it under control. Luckily she really enjoys pill pockets. She also take cough meds as needed. She needs 3-4 small low fat meals per day to keep food in her tummy but not to let it be full. This sweet girl is worth it!

Adopting a dog in Sebastopol

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
