1. Kiara
Young (4 months 19 days) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 6 mi from South San Francisco

Hello there, I am Kiara! I am a 5 month old, spayed, pit bull puppy who will grow to be around 65-70lbs as an adult. I am a little shy in the beginning and need some time to adjust to new things but I warm up quickly! Once I'm familiar, I am a fun loving, energetic, goofy girl who is always ready for an adventure! I love to run around, play, and shower my favorite people with love and affection. I am still learning about the world around me, so I'm hoping for a loving family who can patiently teach me all the things a growing girl like me needs to know! I am looking for my forever family who has plenty of time for playtime, training, adventures and cuddles! If you are ready for a super fun, high energy, sweet dog, please bring your whole family and any resident dogs to meet me!

2. Remington
Senior (9 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 19 mi from South San Francisco

At 10 years old, Remington has settled into foster care beautifully and is showing everyone what a great companion a senior GSP can be. He’s easygoing, has a good personality, and gets along well with just about everyone he meets.
Remington enjoys his daily walks, playing with toys, spending time with his people, and hanging out with other dogs. He’s also a big fan of car rides and is happy to come along for the adventure. His favorite toys are stuffed animals that make noise—although he’s not particularly picky about which one!
Read more about Remington
Remi is house-trained and knows sit, stay, and down. He’s also learning that the crate can be a comfortable place to relax and has recently started going in on his own to rest. When left alone for short periods, he settles calmly within a few minutes and does well staying inside the house.
On walks, Remington may wander from side to side at the beginning, and then he gets into the rhythm of things. His current daily exercise routine is just right for him.
Remington enjoys people and gets along well with children. He has been around kids ranging in age from 9 to 18 and has done well with them. He also gets along well with other dogs and could be happy as either an only dog or with a canine companion.
One important consideration is fencing. Remington has jumped a fence in the past, so he will need a tall, sturdy, secure fence at his new home. He hasn’t attempted to jump the fence lately in foster care, but his new family should take this seriously, especially as he gets adjusted to his new digs.
Remington would do especially well with someone who works from home, is retired, or is semi-retired and can spend plenty of time with him. He’s a well-settled, easygoing guy who enjoys companionship without being demanding.
If you’re looking for a mature GSP with a great personality, good manners, and plenty of life left to enjoy, Remington may be your guy.
Adoption fee: $250 for seniors (nine years and up). If you are a prior adopter, you can add a Great Senior Pooch to your family for free! Your adoption includes a post-adoption training allowance.

4. Buddy
Senior (10 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 19 mi from South San Francisco

Buddy is a senior GSP with a youthful spirit, a big personality, and an even bigger love of being close to his people. At 57 pounds, this sweet, affectionate guy is happiest when he’s right beside you—preferably snuggled up as close as physically possible. He gives intense little kisses, loves attention, and would happily make himself your full-time cuddle buddy.
Read more about Buddy
Don’t let his senior status fool you! Buddy is active and playful. He enjoys walks, indoor ball games, and especially his stuffed toys. Before his neuter, he was enjoying 1.5-mile walks with plenty of hills, so he can keep up with an active household. He pulls a little on leash but is manageable, and he knows or is learning sit, wait, and come.
Buddy is wonderfully easygoing with the world around him. He has done great with dogs, cats, and children and isn’t bothered by normal household noises. He lives with both an energetic dog and cats, and he simply ignores the cats—even sleeping next to them in bed. When his canine foster brother gets pushy or barky, Buddy doesn’t engage; he just carries on with his day. He’s also been great with an energetic, loud, and unpredictable 8-year-old and a calmer 10-year-old kid. He loves car rides and hasn’t shown an interest in chasing squirrels.
He’s house-trained and has done well having the run of the house while his foster family is away for up to eight hours. He may howl when his people first leave or when he can see them outside, but once they’re actually gone, he settles down. This has continued to improve since Buddy first arrived (although an apartment or other close-quarters living situation probably isn’t the best fit). He also did fine in a crate at the veterinary clinic.
Now, let’s talk about Buddy’s special talents. He is an expert at getting under the covers. You can barricade the bed and tuck everything in, but somehow he’ll find his way beneath the blankets—and may leave a little drool on your pillow for good measure. Consider it part of the Buddy experience!
Buddy prefers to have a say in how he’s handled and isn’t a fan of being restrained, especially at the vet. He’ll need sedation for nail trims to keep the experience as stress-free as possible. He can also be protective of things in his mouth and isn’t always cooperative about taking medication, so a patient approach and a little creativity may be helpful. Understanding his preferences and giving him space when needed will help him feel comfortable and secure. Buddy has been diagnosed with mitral valve disease/heart murmur (does not need medications) and has some age-related lumps and bumps. He recently had a dental cleaning and is all spruced up for his next home!
Overall, Buddy is a lovely, affectionate, easygoing companion with plenty of personality and a real talent for snuggling. He’s good with dogs, cats, and kids, enjoys his walks and toys, and is happy to share his home with his favorite people. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who will keep you company, make you laugh, and probably steal your pillow, Buddy could be just the dog for you. Just remember to leave room under the covers!

5. Alvin
Adult (3 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 19 mi from South San Francisco

At 4 years old and 61 pounds of pure muscle, Alvin is a GSP in his prime: smart, athletic and ready for adventure. He also has an excellent “off switch” and a soft spot for a good snuggle.
Inside the house, Alvin is calm and very affectionate. His foster mom says he “melts in your hands” when you scratch his ears. He loves to cuddle, nap, and be close to his people. Once he’s outside, his (typical GSP) energetic side comes out. He loves long walks and would be a great partner for a runner, hiker, or anyone who wants a four-legged companion on outdoor adventures.
Read more about Alvin
Alvin LOVES people. Kids, teens, grandparents, even a party of 20+: he’s happy to meet everyone. Our trainer has been impressed by his manners: he greeted her politely without jumping, sat when asked, and was curious about her treats without being pushy. She called him “extremely biddable,” so he should be a joy to train with food and affection as rewards.
He also adores his foster family’s Sphynx cat. He’s curious about cats outside and has a strong GSP prey drive for birds and squirrels, so a feline sibling could work depending on the cat.
Alvin’s road to rescue was a hard one. He was found injured on the side of a road, then moved between several short-term foster homes. With all that stress, he had a rough start with other (resident) dogs. Our trainer describes him as “a mature and skilled dog communicator”: he’s clear about when he needs space, and he does best with people who read and respect his signals.
Alvin’s ideal home:
Active people who want an athletic dog for walks, runs, outdoor fun, and are able to keep up with his energy
Adopters who understand dog body language, or want to learn, and will keep up with training (leash skills, recall, impulse control)
Only dog at this time. A second dog in the home may be considered in the future
A tall, secure fence (he has cleared 6′ fences!) or a jump-deterrent like a coyote roller
Alvin has been through a lot. What he needs now is a stable home where he can settle in and be the loving, cuddly companion he already is.
Other notes: Alvin is likely able to live successfully with cats. Dog-savvy kids are preferred. He is able to be around other dogs if supervised but not yet ready to live with another dog.
Adoption fee: $425 (includes a post-adoption training allowance). Training will be required.
Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: https://norcalgsprescue.org/adoption-questionnaire/

At the same time, I will roll over for belly rubs at every opportunity. Just call me a Sour Patch Kid. Sometimes I'm sweet and sometimes I'm feisty. I'm hoping for a family that is prepared to give me tons of exercise, playtime, training and of course, love! I get really excited when meeting people, so I may be a little too boisterous for some young children. If you have a dog, please be sure to bring him or her in to meet with me prior to adding me to the family. I'm still learning to share, so I'm hoping for a family that understands how to navigate multidog households. Once I'm comfortable and had a chance to get all of my wiggles out, I'm very affectionate. If you are thinking that this sounds like a good match and you like to meet, please ask customer service about me! Goose ID#A0996963

Samson – Smart, Engaging, and Lovably Oversized
Meet Samson, a 2-year-old, 80-pound German Shepherd mix with a big presence, a bright mind, and an endearing way of checking in with his people.
Read more about Samson
Smart & Talented: Samson knows “sit,” “down,” and “paw,” and can put his paws on patio furniture on cue. He may even know “crawl”! He pulls mildly on leash, takes treats gently and is eager to learn.
Playful & Curious: He enjoys sniffing and exploring the yard, then gallops back when called. He loves engaging with his person and may hop onto a nearby lap for a closer connection.
Connected Companion: Samson checks in frequently and often stays close to his handler, especially when the world feels busy.
Dog Social: Samson plays well with other dogs in playgroup. He may pull mildly or whine softly when he spots a dog he wants to greet
Samson would do best with appropriately matched dogs or as a solo dog with well-matched canine friends.
30. Dulce de Leche
Adult · Male · Poodle (Miniature) / Terrier / Mixed · 7 mi from South San Francisco

Dulce de Leche is the sweetest boy. He loves to be around his humans. He has a healthy appetite and is not picky. Him and 7 other dogs all scruffy and a bit run down likely came from a hoarding situation. All a bit scared and undersocialized this guy is just the most loving little man. Will jump right into your lap and is happy to be cuddled. He came to us with terrible dental disease and will be getting extractions likely most of his teeth will be removed. He came with raging ear infection that will be dealt with at the same time. Right now we are looking for a foster who has lots of love to give during his recovery. All dogs/puppies will be spayed/neutered unless spay/neuter contract is signed with additional deposit. We do NOT adopt puppies in pairs. For more photos and videos please see our website www.hdbnqrescue.org/bitches youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@HDBnQRescue

How to adopt from Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA
When a potential adopter comes into the shelter and sees an animal he or she is interested in adopting, we ask the potential adopter to first complete an Adoption Profile. Then, one of our knowledgeable customer service representatives brings the adopter and animal together in one of our Get Acquainted Rooms. There they have a quiet, private space to get to know each other better. During the visit, the customer service representative may discuss the following: past experiences with animals and current animals in the home lifestyle, including work schedule and the kinds of activities they plan to do with their companion animal housing situation - own or rent, size of yard, etc. In order to make the best match possible for a family and home, we suggest potential adopters bring along all members of the household to meet the new companion animal and bring their current dog(s) to meet a potential dog. Adopters must also be 18 or older.

Adopting a dog in South San Francisco
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
