I'm crate trained, though I'm still working on house training, so a patient and understanding owner will be ideal. I have a high prey drive, so a home without smaller pets or livestock is essential. I'm reactive to other male dogs or strong-willed dogs but is accepting of submissive females of my own size. I need a quiet place with minimal distractions to thrive, as I can become easily stimulated and is a strong chewer who may try to explore beyond normal fencing. One of my favorite activities is splashing around in kiddie pools—it's my idea of heaven! However, I don't do well being left alone at home for long periods, as my investigative nature leads me to explore my surroundings. With the right environment and a loving family, I am sure to bring joy and laughter to your life. If you're ready to give unique and wonderful me the home I deserve, please put in an online application to meet me. *Thank you to Sharon for sponsoring this wonderful dog at the Burnice Kraemer Sanctuary and giving him the chance for a better life.

I love being around my humans and would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for a loyal and affectionate companion.

Although I'm still working on my house training, with patience and love, I'll have it down pat in no time. With my playful and loving personality, I will absolutely thrive in a home where I can bond with my family and be a part of their everyday lives. I'm good with other dogs and children, but cats are an unknown. I don't like being alone all day, so I'd be best suited for a home where someone is around to keep me company. Since I'm just a puppy, children in the home must be at least 6 years of age. I know I'm cute and everyone will want me, but please be sure you're ready to take on a puppy as it's similar to having a newborn (2-legged kind) in the home. It's a lifetime commitment, not a temporary one where the love and attention wears off after I'm grown. If you're ready and able to give me a lifetime of love and wonderful memories, please fill out an application to meet me.

If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Homie, the ultimate canine companion with a heart of gold and an adventurous spirit! I am an affectionate, outgoing, and confident Husky / Australian Shepherd who is always up for a good time. My playful nature makes me a blast to be around, and my confidence means I'm always ready to tackle new adventures.
Read more about Homie
I'm house-trained and will politely scratch at the door and whimper if I need to go out. I know a bunch of cool tricks like sit, stay, lay down, jump, gentle, shake, and high five, and I walk beautifully on a leash. I am also a fetch fanatic and loves nothing more than a day at the beach or sunbathing in the yard. I'm an energetic guy who needs plenty of exercise and space to explore, so I'm not the best fit for indoor-only living. I am an escape artist if I find a hole or gap in the fence, so a secure yard is a must. I am a pro at socializing with other dogs, making me the perfect playmate for any doggy friends I meet, but not a fan of cats. I am great with older children but young children are an unknown as I haven't been around any. And while I'm a total softie most of the time, I do have a bit of a "no-no" attitude when it comes to nail trimming—so fair warning there! This might be something to consider with a professional groomer. I was surrendered by my previous owner but I'm ready to find my forever home with a family who can keep up with my active lifestyle and shower me with the love and attention I deserve. If you're looking for a fun-loving, adventurous, and affectionate pup to join your family, I am your guy! 20. Gracie & Leona
Young (1 year 10 months) · Female · Australian Kelpie / Siberian Husky / Mixed · 15 mi from Thousand Oaks

Meet Leona & Gracie – A Bonded Pair of Beautiful Siberian Husky Sisters
Leona (tan with blue eyes) and Gracie (brown with blue eyes) both survivors of Contra Costa Animal Services are stunning Siberian Husky/Australian Kelpie sisters who are approximately 1½ years old. Each weighs between 35–40 pounds and is healthy, energetic, and full of personality. Both are vaccinated, spayed and microchipped.
Read more about Gracie & Leona
These sweet girls are naturally shy around people indoors, but beneath their cautious nature are gentle, affectionate, and loving companions. They are curious, friendly, and non-aggressive with both dogs and cats. While they are good eaters, they prefer to dine privately and are most comfortable eating when people are not nearby. They are not particularly motivated by treats for training purposes, although they do have a few favorite treats they enjoy sharing together in the backyard, especially after a walk.
Leona and Gracie are sensitive souls who startle easily with sudden movements or approaches. They take time to build trust, but once they feel safe with someone, they enjoy gentle affection and attention. They thrive with calm, patient people who respect their boundaries and allow them the space they need to feel secure.
As a bonded pair, Leona and Gracie are happiest when together. Whether they're relaxing on their dog bed indoors, exploring their secure fenced yard, or heading out on an adventure, they find comfort and confidence in each other's company. Watching them play together is a joy—they are full of energy, husky antics, and sisterly fun.
Daily walks are the highlight of their lives. The moment they realize it's time to go, they become animated, vocal, and excited. On walks, they truly shine. They walk well on leash, are easy to guide, and love exploring new sights, smells, routes, and environments. They are intelligent, curious dogs who thrive on outdoor stimulation and exercise. Regular daily walks are essential to their happiness and well-being.
Because of their strong prey drive and independent husky nature, Leona and Gracie should not be considered off-leash dogs. At this time, neither reliably responds to voice recall or commands when distracted.
Since entering foster care, both sisters have continued to make steady progress and gain confidence. They would do best in a quiet, calm home with a securely fenced yard and a family willing to provide patience, kindness, consistency, and understanding. In their foster home, they have a designated quiet space where they feel safe and can relax or nap when needed.
A home with younger children would likely not be the best fit, as a busy household could increase their anxiety. Instead, they would flourish in a peaceful environment where they can continue building trust at their own pace.
Leona and Gracie are truly special dogs. Their foster family adores their unique personalities, endless husky quirks, and the laughter they bring every day. They are inseparable sisters who are looking for a forever home willing to embrace them exactly as they are—a loving, devoted pair ready to share a lifetime of adventures together.

Adopting a dog with children in Thousand Oaks
Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.
Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.
Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
