1. Daisy

Young (3 years) · Female · Dachshund / Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 24 mi from Union City

Meet Daisy!

At just 28 lbs, Daisy is a little bundle of sweetness with a big heart! She’s approximately 2–3 years old, and while her breed is anyone’s guess, her wonderful personality is no mystery.

Daisy is a friendly, social, easygoing girl who loves being around her people. She’s gentle and relaxed with both people and dogs, and has done wonderfully with the dogs she’s met so far. She’s even discovering the fun of playing tug-of-war with her canine friends!

Read more about Daisy

She’s affectionate without being demanding and loves being close to her humans. Belly rubs, cuddles, doggy kisses (she might even try to sneak you a little kiss on the lips!), and simply hanging out together are right up her alley.

Daisy enjoys walks, car rides, running at the park, and rolling around in the grass. She’s also a lovely houseguest: fully potty trained, crate trained, sleeps well through the night, and is beginning to enjoy playing independently with her toys.

She’s not particularly food-motivated and would much rather have your company, but peanut butter, cheese, or a little broth on her kibble can certainly get her attention!

And good news for cat lovers: Daisy has been tested with cats in a home environment and passed her cat test!

Daisy would do well in an active household, with or without another friendly dog. She’s an adaptable, affectionate girl who would love a family to call her own.

If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle, 28-lb companion who will happily share your walks, your couch, and probably a few kisses, Daisy might just be your girl! ❤️

2. Remington

Senior (9 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 23 mi from Union City

At 10 years old, Remington has settled into foster care beautifully and is showing everyone what a great companion a senior GSP can be. He’s easygoing, has a good personality, and gets along well with just about everyone he meets.

Remington enjoys his daily walks, playing with toys, spending time with his people, and hanging out with other dogs. He’s also a big fan of car rides and is happy to come along for the adventure. His favorite toys are stuffed animals that make noise—although he’s not particularly picky about which one!

Read more about Remington

Remi is house-trained and knows sit, stay, and down. He’s also learning that the crate can be a comfortable place to relax and has recently started going in on his own to rest. When left alone for short periods, he settles calmly within a few minutes and does well staying inside the house.

On walks, Remington may wander from side to side at the beginning, and then he gets into the rhythm of things. His current daily exercise routine is just right for him.

Remington enjoys people and gets along well with children. He has been around kids ranging in age from 9 to 18 and has done well with them. He also gets along well with other dogs and could be happy as either an only dog or with a canine companion.

One important consideration is fencing. Remington has jumped a fence in the past, so he will need a tall, sturdy, secure fence at his new home. He hasn’t attempted to jump the fence lately in foster care, but his new family should take this seriously, especially as he gets adjusted to his new digs.

Remington would do especially well with someone who works from home, is retired, or is semi-retired and can spend plenty of time with him. He’s a well-settled, easygoing guy who enjoys companionship without being demanding.

If you’re looking for a mature GSP with a great personality, good manners, and plenty of life left to enjoy, Remington may be your guy.

Adoption fee: $250 for seniors (nine years and up). If you are a prior adopter, you can add a Great Senior Pooch to your family for free! Your adoption includes a post-adoption training allowance.

Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: https://norcalgsprescue.org/adoption-questionnaire/

(Please note that we adopt primarily within Northern California and our minimum age for kids is 6)

3. Buddy

Senior (10 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 23 mi from Union City

Buddy is a senior GSP with a youthful spirit, a big personality, and an even bigger love of being close to his people. At 57 pounds, this sweet, affectionate guy is happiest when he’s right beside you—preferably snuggled up as close as physically possible. He gives intense little kisses, loves attention, and would happily make himself your full-time cuddle buddy.

Read more about Buddy

Don’t let his senior status fool you! Buddy is active and playful. He enjoys walks, indoor ball games, and especially his stuffed toys. Before his neuter, he was enjoying 1.5-mile walks with plenty of hills, so he can keep up with an active household. He pulls a little on leash but is manageable, and he knows or is learning sit, wait, and come.

Buddy is wonderfully easygoing with the world around him. He has done great with dogs, cats, and children and isn’t bothered by normal household noises. He lives with both an energetic dog and cats, and he simply ignores the cats—even sleeping next to them in bed. When his canine foster brother gets pushy or barky, Buddy doesn’t engage; he just carries on with his day. He’s also been great with an energetic, loud, and unpredictable 8-year-old and a calmer 10-year-old kid. He loves car rides and hasn’t shown an interest in chasing squirrels.

He’s house-trained and has done well having the run of the house while his foster family is away for up to eight hours. He may howl when his people first leave or when he can see them outside, but once they’re actually gone, he settles down. This has continued to improve since Buddy first arrived (although an apartment or other close-quarters living situation probably isn’t the best fit). He also did fine in a crate at the veterinary clinic.

Now, let’s talk about Buddy’s special talents. He is an expert at getting under the covers. You can barricade the bed and tuck everything in, but somehow he’ll find his way beneath the blankets—and may leave a little drool on your pillow for good measure. Consider it part of the Buddy experience!

Buddy prefers to have a say in how he’s handled and isn’t a fan of being restrained, especially at the vet. He’ll need sedation for nail trims to keep the experience as stress-free as possible. He can also be protective of things in his mouth and isn’t always cooperative about taking medication, so a patient approach and a little creativity may be helpful. Understanding his preferences and giving him space when needed will help him feel comfortable and secure. Buddy has been diagnosed with mitral valve disease/heart murmur (does not need medications) and has some age-related lumps and bumps. He recently had a dental cleaning and is all spruced up for his next home!

Overall, Buddy is a lovely, affectionate, easygoing companion with plenty of personality and a real talent for snuggling. He’s good with dogs, cats, and kids, enjoys his walks and toys, and is happy to share his home with his favorite people. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who will keep you company, make you laugh, and probably steal your pillow, Buddy could be just the dog for you. Just remember to leave room under the covers!

4. Alvin

Adult (3 years 11 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 23 mi from Union City

At 4 years old and 61 pounds of pure muscle, Alvin is a GSP in his prime: smart, athletic and ready for adventure. He also has an excellent “off switch” and a soft spot for a good snuggle.

Inside the house, Alvin is calm and very affectionate. His foster mom says he “melts in your hands” when you scratch his ears. He loves to cuddle, nap, and be close to his people. Once he’s outside, his (typical GSP) energetic side comes out. He loves long walks and would be a great partner for a runner, hiker, or anyone who wants a four-legged companion on outdoor adventures.

Read more about Alvin

Alvin LOVES people. Kids, teens, grandparents, even a party of 20+: he’s happy to meet everyone. Our trainer has been impressed by his manners: he greeted her politely without jumping, sat when asked, and was curious about her treats without being pushy. She called him “extremely biddable,” so he should be a joy to train with food and affection as rewards.

He also adores his foster family’s Sphynx cat. He’s curious about cats outside and has a strong GSP prey drive for birds and squirrels, so a feline sibling could work depending on the cat.

Alvin’s road to rescue was a hard one. He was found injured on the side of a road, then moved between several short-term foster homes. With all that stress, he had a rough start with other (resident) dogs. Our trainer describes him as “a mature and skilled dog communicator”: he’s clear about when he needs space, and he does best with people who read and respect his signals.

Alvin’s ideal home:

Active people who want an athletic dog for walks, runs, outdoor fun, and are able to keep up with his energy
Adopters who understand dog body language, or want to learn, and will keep up with training (leash skills, recall, impulse control)
Only dog at this time. A second dog in the home may be considered in the future
A tall, secure fence (he has cleared 6′ fences!) or a jump-deterrent like a coyote roller

Alvin has been through a lot. What he needs now is a stable home where he can settle in and be the loving, cuddly companion he already is.

Other notes: Alvin is likely able to live successfully with cats. Dog-savvy kids are preferred. He is able to be around other dogs if supervised but not yet ready to live with another dog.

Adoption fee: $425 (includes a post-adoption training allowance). Training will be required.

Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: https://norcalgsprescue.org/adoption-questionnaire/

In the short time she has been in her foster home, she has proven that she is quick learner. She is good in the car, walks nicely on leash and non-reactive on leash.

Abby is a 4 yr old, 70lb chunky snorty, shorty gal! She is sweet and friendly with everyone and could probably live in a home with kids. She is aloof around other dogs and not reactive on walks. She doesn't have a lot of stamina but enjoys a nice neighborhood stroll. 7. Lucy

Adult (7 years 1 month) · Female · Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat) · 25 mi from Union City

Lucy is a 7–8‑year‑old, 12‑lb female dog who was scheduled for euthanasia on September 23, 2026. A last‑minute social media post prompted two Grateful Dogs Rescue volunteers to intervene, allowing her to leave the shelter safely. And what a change! She is now a fun, goofy, food loving dog that will control you with her chocolately eyes!

Read more about Lucy

Lucy is a quiet, gentle dog who enjoys a nice quiet home; she's hanging with two other chihuahuas and does great with them. Lucy did meet some cats and no one seemed to care so yes, we'd say she can live with cats! She enjoys spending long periods in the garden and relaxing in the sun. Indoors, she likes laps, soft sofas, and rearranging throw pillows.

She is potty trained, uses a doggy door, and will use a potty pad at night. Lucy walks well on leash and enjoys slow neighborhood strolls. She may initially appear aloof for a few minutes, but she warms up quickly and accepts gentle affection. She rides well in the car.

Lucy is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and recently had a wellness exam. Based on her condition, her age estimate was revised from 10 years to 7–8 years old. She also had a major dental procedure and is now fully ready for adoption.

A yard not required but sunspots a must :)

Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial veterinary and other expenses in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, we request a tax-deductible donation for each adoption. The suggested donation for Lucy is $300.

If you are interested in adopting Lucy, please complete our online adoption application at

8. Kenzie

Adult · Female · Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 24 mi from Union City

Meet Kenzie (aka Lyngcha) – A Brave Little Soul Looking for Her Best Friend ❤️

Some dogs wear their hearts on their sleeves. Kenzie who her fosters have been calling Lyngcha had to learn it was safe to have one.

When Kenzie first arrived in foster care, she was completely shut down. She spent weeks hiding in her crate and was too frightened to interact with people or even go outside during the day. Watching her slowly learn to trust has been one of the most rewarding journeys we’ve ever witnessed.

Today, Lyngcha is a happy, playful, affectionate young girl who greets each day with a wagging tail and an adorable smile.

Read more about Kenzie

She absolutely
loves other dogs
and truly thrives with a confident canine companion. Whether she’s wrestling, playing tug-of-war, following her doggy friends around the house, or snuggling up beside them, having another friendly dog helps her feel safe and brings out her joyful personality.

Lyngcha is also very food motivated, making her eager to learn. She’s already picking up basic commands and is excited to keep learning with her future family.

She loves going for walks and approaches every adventure with puppy-like enthusiasm, taking in all the exciting smells and sights. New environments can still be a little overwhelming at first, but with patience, encouragement, and another dog by her side, her confidence continues to blossom.

Once Lyngcha bonds with her people, she’s an absolute sweetheart. She loves curling up close, resting her head on you, and soaking up affection. Her foster family even nicknamed her
“Froggie”
because of her adorable little hops whenever she’s excited—especially at mealtime!

Lyngcha has never shown any aggression. She’s simply a gentle soul who needs a little time to feel safe before showing you just how loving she truly is.

Lyngcha’s Ideal Home

• A patient family that will let her settle in at her own pace.

• A confident, playful resident dog to help her continue building confidence.

• Daily walks, lots of love, and plenty of cuddle time.

• A home that understands shy dogs and celebrates every little victory.

The frightened girl who once hid in a crate has transformed into a loving companion with so much life ahead of her. She may not run into your arms on day one—but if you give her your patience and your heart, she’ll give you hers forever.

If you’re looking for a loyal best friend and believe that the greatest love stories are worth waiting for, Lyngcha just might be your perfect match.

We’d love for you to meet Lyngcha!

If you’ve been thinking about opening your heart and home to a new furry family member, we’d love to learn more about you and your household. Please fill out our adoption application, and let’s see if you and Lyngcha might be a wonderful match. ❤️

15. Cliffy

Adult (4 years 1 month) · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 22 mi from Union City

Cliffy
never goes on a walk or a car ride without his emotional support spiky ball. He carries it the whole way and even keeps it close when he sleeps. And don't think you can part him from it for one measly treat! While he is very food motivated, he's done the math: this is the Bay Area, so the going rate to drop the ball is at least 3-4 treats. He's a character, and negotiating with him is half the fun.

Read more about Cliffy

Cliffy
is great with people, kids of all ages included, and he especially LOVES men! The joke is that he's a "dude's dog." He likes women too, though, which would make him an excellent wingdog for anyone who could use a charming icebreaker at the other end of the leash. Are you looking for that special someone to be in matching pajamas with on Christmas Day?
Cliffy
is here to help you! And don't forget a matching set of pajamas and an ugly Christmas sweater for him too, because this guy looks great sporting some dogwear.

Cliffy
is eager to go on his daily walks and is also great in the car for adventures farther away from home. The car is one of his favorite places to be, and he will try to convince you to take the car to go places rather than walk there. In fact, he will sometimes try to convince you to steal someone else's car, just so he doesn't have to walk the whole way.

At home,
Cliffy
has impeccable manners. While he's a strong chewer who adores his spiky ball and tasty chews, he doesn't destroy anything in the house. He is not a big barker, though if other dogs in the house start up, he will join the choir, even when he doesn't know what the song is about. He loves cuddling up next to his humans and being petted for as long as they are willing. He is also okay being left home alone for several hours and will stay in his crate even if the door is left open.
Cliffy
loves his crate, so much so, in fact, that after a walk he lets himself in and sometimes closes the door behind him. Because, manners!

Cliffy
currently lives with two female dogs, and could share his home with a well-matched female dog. If you have a spot on the couch, a spiky ball subscription, and a healthy treat budget for ball negotiations,
Cliffy
would love to meet you.

16. Stella

Adult (3 years 2 months) · Female · Siberian Husky (short coat) · 22 mi from Union City

Get ready to fall in love — sweet 2‑year‑old Stella is about to steal your heart! Gentle, smart, and wonderfully easy to be around, she’s the kind of dog who makes life feel lighter.

Read more about Stella

Stella is polite, potty‑trained, walks beautifully on a leash, knows her commands and is always eager to please. Stella adores her humans and is friendly with everybody, including kids. She gets along with other dogs, but prefers them one-on-one. This girl gets very excited for her daily walks, followed by Zoomies and squeaky toy playtime. However, mostly she just wants to be wherever you are — at home, riding in the car, at a café, or curled up in her bed (next to yours) all night long.

We believe that Stella was abandoned by her previous owner, so she is a little unsure of her new world and may want to stay always close to you at first. She’s learning to be brave again and needs a patient, loving family who will help her feel safe. Because she likes company, we think she will do best in a home with another friendly dog companion to help her feel more confident.

If you’ve been dreaming of a gentle, calm, affectionate young husky, Stella is your girl!

21. Ace

Senior (10 years 6 months) · Male · German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat) · 23 mi from Union City

Meet Ace!
At 10 1/2 years young and 65 pounds, Ace is proof that age is just a number. This handsome boy is sweet, polite, friendly, and already knows how to be a great housemate. He’s fully housetrained, has good manners around the house, and is happiest when he’s spending time with his people.
Ace enjoys a simple life filled with walks, exploring the yard, carrying around his favorite stuffed toys, and keeping an eye out for squirrels and other backyard critters. He especially loves car rides and is always ready to join you for an adventure. When treats are involved, Ace can even show off his impressive skill of catching them right out of the air.
He’s a smart dog who knows cues such as “come,” “sit,” “wait,” and “get on.” On leash, Ace is easy to walk and enjoys getting out for daily exercise, though he wouldn’t mind a few extra opportunities to stretch his legs and strengthen his hind end.
Ace gets along well with other dogs and has a friendly, easygoing personality with the people he meets.

Read more about Ace

While his foster family hasn’t had the opportunity to see him around young children, he would likely do well with respectful kids ages 6 and up. Because he’s a larger dog who can be enthusiastic when seeing wildlife and critters on walks, a home without frail seniors or very small children would be the best fit.
What Ace wants most is companionship. He forms strong bonds with his people and prefers not to spend long periods alone. He’ll thrive in a home where someone is home much of the time, works remotely, or enjoys bringing their dog along for daily activities. When left by himself, Ace can become anxious and vocal, so he’ll do best with adopters who understand his desire to stay close to his favorite humans.
Ace also has a few medical needs that his future family should be aware of. He has mast cell tumors on his right shoulder and left wrist that are being managed under veterinary guidance. He takes daily medications and supplements to help keep him comfortable and feeling his best. His adoption will include 6 months of the medications and supplements.
Despite these challenges, Ace approaches life with a happy spirit and a wagging tail. He’s settled nicely into foster care, loves being part of the household, and is ready to find a family that will appreciate the loyal, affectionate companion he is.
If you’re looking for a devoted best friend who will happily accompany you on car rides, neighborhood walks, and quiet evenings at home, Ace may be the perfect match.
Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: https://norcalgsprescue.org/adoption-questionnaire/

23. Poppy Seed

Young (2 years) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 24 mi from Union City

Poppy Seed is a sweet, smart, athletic girl who's a little shy with strangers at first, but given space, time, and a few treats, she'll warm up to you soon enough.

She's a wonderful communicator and will offer a soft growl when she needs space, which is just her polite way of asking for a minute. Once she's warmed up to you at her own pace, she's all in. Affectionate, playful, and convinced she deserves a seat at the dinner table. She already knows "sit," is learning "down," gives the gentlest "paw," walks great on leash, and loves her crate as a cozy, safe space.

Read more about Poppy Seed

Poppy will do best in a home with older kids or adults who are committed to teaching her simple and useful cues and life skills throughforce-free, positive-reinforcement training methods. Training is not just for her. It's for humans too. Using positive reinforcement and force-free methods, you'll build real trust together, and she'll learn that responding to your cues is rewarding and fun.

Pair that with the right enrichment, snuffle mats, food puzzles, and scent games where she sniffs out hidden treats, and you've got a recipe for a confident, calmer pup. All that sniffing and foraging settles her nerves, every little win boosts her confidence, and problem-solving alongside you deepens your bond.

She's an athletic adventure buddy who loves romping with other dogs, playing fetch, and then happily curls up for snuggles afterward. She'll bark at odd sounds like any good watchdog, but settles right back down once you've checked it out. If you're looking for a thoughtful, loving companion who'll grow more confident with you by her side, Poppy Seed is your girl.

25. Maisy

Adult (8 years 2 months) · Female · Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat) · 18 mi from Union City

Maisy
is an incredibly sweet, affectionate dog who is a joy to have around. She loves being part of whatever you're doing and quickly wins people over with her fun, social personality.

Energy Level?
Medium. Maisy has bursts of playful "mountain goat" energy and enjoys exploring, but she's equally happy relaxing with a sunny spot for a nap.

House-trained?
Mostly. Maisy does well about going outside to potty but has had some accidents on the rugs
, so her foster has found it easiest to keep those picked up while she continues to build good habits.

Read more about Maisy

Describe how they are on leash?
Maisy walks well on leash and enjoys getting out for walks and adventures.

Describe how they are with other dogs?
When meeting new dogs, Maisy may bark or lunge initially, but once she has a chance to settle in and become comfortable, she does well and enjoys canine companionship.

Have they been around cats or other animals? How were they?
Yes. Maisy has lived with a cat, whom she happily ignores, and she gets along very well with another dog in her foster home.

Commands they know?
Maisy is still learning her basic commands and is currently working on "sit," "off," and "quiet." She's eager to learn with positive reinforcement.

What are their favorite things?
Attention, affection, affection, affection,
food (especially treats!), walks, and spending time with her people. She also enjoys social outings after she's had a little time to check out her surroundings.

What do they need to work on?
Maisy is continuing to learn her basic manners and commands. Like many curious dogs, she'll occasionally help herself to shoes or laundry if they're left within reach, so she'll benefit from continued training, puppy proofing, and management.

How are they when left alone? How long have they been left alone?
Maisy does well when left alone. She is crated for up to four hours at a time, typically no more than a couple of days each week, and handles it well.

Where do they sleep?
Maisy sleeps comfortably in her crate.

What is their ideal home?
Maisy is a wonderfully adaptable dog who would fit into many different types of homes. She has done well with dogs and cats, and while she hasn't been around children yet, her sweet, social nature suggests she could do well with a family willing to give her a proper introduction. Whether it's a single person, a couple, or a family, Maisy will thrive with people who enjoy including her in their daily lives and can provide moderate exercise, continued training, and lots of love. She's an easygoing, affectionate companion who forms strong bonds and will make a wonderful addition to a lucky family.

26. Kiwi

Adult (3 years 4 months) · Female · Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 24 mi from Union City

Meet 3+ year old Kiwi! FOSTER TO ADOPT

Kiwi is a sweet, affectionate bully mix with a playful streak and a heart full of love for her people. Tennis balls are the pinnacle of canine joy as far as she's concerned, and she'll happily fetch one for you (though "drop it" is still under negotiation). When she's not playing, she's nuzzling up close for quality cuddle time.

Read more about Kiwi

She's adjusting beautifully to indoor life. She's figured out the doggie door for potty breaks, isn't destructive around the house, and enjoys her growing collection of plush toys, chews, and food puzzles. She shares her treasures without fuss and settles nicely in a crate when someone's home. A few things she's still working on: resisting the urge to attempt a crate escape when left alone, and accepting that snacks left on counters are not, in fact, generous offerings from the universe. Counter surfing is her sport of choice, so kitchen vigilance is a must.

Kiwi is a reliable alert barker, letting you know about doors and footsteps like a small furry doorbell. Out in the world, she's friendly with people and other dogs, loves her car rides, and is wonderful on beach and trail adventures.

If you're looking for a loving, playful companion who's eager to learn new and useful life skills through force-free and positive reinforcement training methods, then she's ready to give you her whole heart.

Adopting a dog with children in Union City

Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.

Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.

Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
