5. Oliver
Adult (8 years 6 months) · Male · French Bulldog · 18 mi from Blades

Meet Oliver, an 8-year-old deaf French Bulldog with a BIG personality and a heart full of love for his people!
Oliver is an absolute sweetheart with adults and kids alike. He’s affectionate, playful, curious, and happiest when he’s included in whatever his humans are doing. He loves car rides, walks, toys, adventures, and especially the BEACH! He’s equal parts cuddle buddy and entertaining little sidekick, with a personality that makes him impossible not to love.
Being deaf hasn’t slowed Oliver down one bit! He’s smart, food motivated, loves to play, and is learning to communicate through visual cues.
Read more about Oliver
He knows basic cues like sit and down and will benefit from continuing to build his skills with his new family. Like many enthusiastic Frenchies, he can get excited and pull on leash, so a little continued training and consistency will go a long way.
A NOTE ABOUT OTHER DOGS
While Oliver has spent time peacefully around other dogs, he has also had unpredictable fights with dogs within the home. For this reason, we feel he will be happiest and safest as the only dog in his adoptive home. This allows his family to enjoy all the love and personality he has to offer without the stress of potential conflict with another dog.
Oliver also appreciates having his own space when enjoying bones and other special treats.
Oliver is looking for a family to love, adventures to share, and a couch to call his own. He has so much affection to give and would love nothing more than to be someone’s very special boy. If you’re looking for a fun, loving companion with a big personality, Oliver might just steal your heart!

6. Ebenezer
Young (4 years 3 months) · Male · Kai Dog / Australian Shepherd / Mixed · 18 mi from Blades

Hi I'm Ebenezer,
I’m an approximately 4-year-old, 40-pound boy, and my rescue friends believe I’m a Kai Ken mix, possibly with some Shepherd mixed in. I’m a handsome guy, but my friends will tell you that what makes me special is my heart—and how far I’ve come. When I first came into rescue, I was completely shut down. My time in the shelter was incredibly traumatic for me, and I also arrived with an injury to my back. I was scared, overwhelmed, and completely unsure of what was happening around me. Everything had changed, and I didn’t know where I was or who I could trust. I didn’t want to leave my kennel.
Read more about Ebenezer
I didn’t want to explore. I didn’t want to interact with the world around me. I just wanted to feel safe. And even though I was scared and hurting, there was something my foster family noticed right away: I was always incredibly sweet and friendly. I never stopped wanting kindness. I never stopped wanting affection. I just needed time to feel safe enough to accept it. So they gave me time. They let me decompress. They gave me a quiet, predictable routine and allowed me to move at my own pace. They didn’t force me to be brave before I was ready. Instead, they showed me over and over again that I was safe. And slowly, I started to come around. At first, my progress was measured in tiny steps. I became more comfortable in my surroundings. I started venturing out of my safe space. Then I began exploring more of the house. And eventually, I discovered the backyard. Now I RUN around the yard, explore, and actually enjoy myself! I’ve also discovered toys, and I really enjoy collecting them. Plus, I am fully house trained. Even when I’m scared, I don’t have accidents. But one of my biggest breakthroughs has been discovering how much I love affection. These days, I want to be petted whenever I get the chance. I’ll come looking for attention and enjoy being close to my people. After everything I’ve been through, I think I’ve finally figured out something pretty important: I just want to be loved. I’m also an amazing watchdog. I’m naturally alert and observant, and I take my job of keeping an eye on my home very seriously. If something catches my attention, I’ll make sure you know about it! I’m currently fostered with children and small dogs, and I do well with them. Once I know someone and feel comfortable, I can be a very sweet, happy companion. Meeting new people and new dogs is scary for me. I need to figure out that I’m still safe. I’m not the dog who is going to walk up to every stranger or new dog and immediately want to play. It just means I need you to give me the chance. Every day, I come a little farther out of my shell. Every day, I show a little more of my personality. And every day, I’m learning that the world doesn’t have to be such a scary place. My future adopter will need to understand that I’m going to need time to adjust in a new home, just like I did when I first came into rescue. I’ll need patience, consistency, structure, and someone who will allow me to build trust at my own pace. When I learn to trust you, it will mean something. Because you’ll know that I chose you. You’ll get to experience the first time I come to you for affection. The first time I bring you a toy. The first time I run around your backyard without a care in the world. The first time I look at you and realize that you’re my safe person. And eventually, the day I finally know that I’m home. My rescue friends believe that earning my complete trust will be one of the greatest rewards my adopter could ever experience. I think they’re right. I’m not looking for someone to fix me. I’m looking for someone who will understand me, be patient with me, and give me the time I need to become the dog I know I can be. I’ve already come so far. There’s still so much more of me waiting to come out. And if you’re willing to be patient and take that journey with me, I promise it will be worth it. Because underneath the fear is a sweet, affectionate, playful bo

7. Fendi
Adult (7 years 3 months) · Female · English Bulldog / American Bulldog / Mixed · 18 mi from Blades

Meet Fendi!
Fendi is a gorgeous 7-year-old, 55-pound Pocket Bully. Despite the name, Pocket Bullies aren’t always “pocket-sized”—they’re known for their stocky, muscular build, affectionate nature, and deep devotion to their families. Fendi is no exception!
One of her favorite things in the world is going for walks—though she prefers to be in charge by carrying her own leash! When she’s not out exploring, you’ll likely find her happily riding shotgun on a car ride or snuggled up beside her favorite person soaking up ear scratches and side rubs.
Fendi has a fun collection of toys that she loves, but don’t be surprised if one of your spare socks mysteriously disappears.
Read more about Fendi
She enjoys carrying them around and using them as comfort items when she’s feeling a little anxious.
Fendi forms deep bonds with her people and is incredibly loyal. Because of that, she can be protective of the people she loves and some of her favorite belongings, including toys, blankets, and pillows. She will thrive with an experienced owner who understands and respects canine body language and is committed to continuing her success.
For Fendi’s happiness and everyone’s safety, she is looking for a home where she can be the only pet and without young children. In the right home, she is an affectionate, devoted companion who will reward her family with endless cuddles, loyalty, and love.
If you’re looking for a loyal best friend who will happily join you on adventures and then curl up beside you at the end of the day, Fendi may be the perfect match!

In honor of Pit Bull Awareness Month, my adoption fee is WAIVED for the entire month of October! ❤Meet Boulderface, a 1-year-old XXL Bully mix with a head as big as his heart. This goofy guy came to us as a stray, so we don't know much about his past, but what we do know is that he's packed full of love, muscle, and personality.Boulderface may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he makes up for it with endless affection and an adorable "big doofus" charm. If you move, he's probably coming with you.Still very much a puppy at heart, Boulderface is learning the ropes. He already knows how to sit and usually comes when called, but he's still working on mastering those listening skills. With continued training, consistency, and patience, this lovable meathead is sure to keep making progress.Because of his size and strength, Boulderface is looking for a home with children over 8 years old who can comfortably handle a big, happy dog. He may enjoy a canine companion who can match his playful energy, but any meet-and-greets with resident dogs are recommended. Cats are definitely not his thing. Boulderface doesn't always realize just how big he is, and a feline friend would not appreciate his enthusiastic approach to life. The ideal home for Boulderface is one with someone willing to provide structure, guidance, and plenty of love. He needs a person who can occasionally put their foot down when this oversized puppy forgets his manners. In return, you'll get a loyal best friend, a professional cuddle expert, and enough love to fill an entire room.If you're looking for a giant goofball with a heart of gold and a face you'll never forget, Boulderface might just be your perfect match. ❤️Boulderface's adoption fee is $175, which helps support their medical care and preparation for adoption. Please note: All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. 12. Emmie
Adult · Female · German Shepherd Dog / Husky / Mixed · 47 mi from Blades

❤️ Some dogs need a home. Emmie needs a place to heal. ❤️Meet Emmie — a 7-year-old Husky/German Shepherd mix with a heart as big as her smile.Emmie came to us after her owner had to move in with family, and the resident dog in the home wasn't getting along with her. The family told us, "Emmie is perfect — she definitely wasn't the problem," and after just five minutes with her, you'll understand exactly what they meant.Emmie has done wonderfully with every person she's met. She's gentle, patient, and truly enjoys being part of a family. At this time, Emmie is looking for a quiet, low-stress home with no kids, no dogs, and no cats.
Read more about Emmie
Shelter life has pushed her stress to the max, and we've seen her become more irritable and less tolerant of fast movements, being grabbed quickly, or being told what to do.It's important to note that this is something we've only started seeing after Emmie has spent so much time in the shelter environment. The constant stress and lack of stability have been incredibly hard on her, and we're hopeful that once she's able to decompress in a home setting, these behaviors will improve or disappear altogether. Right now, she simply needs a calm environment where she can feel safe, secure, and not overwhelmed. One thing Emmie is struggling with here at the shelter is eating. Like many animals who come from loving homes, the sudden change has been hard on her. Her previous family tried everything to make the situation work before making the heartbreaking decision to surrender her, and Emmie is feeling that loss too. We've tried countless foods and tricks to help her settle in, but nothing has fully stuck yet. What she does love is human food — she's a girl with taste. If you're someone who enjoys cooking, understands sensitive dogs, and has room in your heart for a companion who desperately wants to feel secure again, Emmie is waiting for you. She's one of those dogs who is simply too good to be anywhere but in a home where she's truly loved.Even if you're not in a position to adopt, we'd love to talk with you about fostering. Getting Emmie out of the shelter, even temporarily, could make a world of difference for her. If you think you can give her a quiet place to decompress and feel safe, please reach out — we're happy to chat about whether fostering or adoption might be the right fit.Emmie deserves a soft place to land, and we're hopeful her person is out there. ❤️This pet has been sponsored and is free for adoption. She prefers to be the only animal in the home, but with kids she has been nothing but wonderful. She’s patient, affectionate, and we have no concerns about her living with children.Peppercorn recently enjoyed a weekend sleepover with a foster family, where we learned even more about what makes her special. She absolutely adores children and even made several trips to a local middle school, where she happily made dozens of new friends. She loved every bit of the attention and proved what a wonderful family companion she can be.Like many dogs adjusting to life in a home, Peppercorn is still working on a few skills. She will need continued training with counter surfing and would benefit from crate training to help her settle comfortably into her new routine. She's eager to please and ready to learn alongside a family willing to guide her.Peppercorn is also still learning what toys are and how to have fun with them, but she's trying, and it's adorable to watch her discover joy in real time. She also enjoys the simple pleasures in life, especially finding a sunny spot to stretch out and sunbathe. Love, though? She knows that better than anyone. When you look at her, you can guess the past she's had, but you can also see how ready she is for a future filled with kindness, comfort, and a family who will finally treat her the way she deserves. ☀️❤️If you’re looking for a loyal, loving dog who will devote her whole heart to her family, Peppercorn is ready to meet you.Peppercorn's adoption fee is $0, which helps support their medical care and preparation for adoptionPlease note: All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. This boy loves couches, chairs, and any cozy spot he can fit himself into. If there's a seat available, expect Ford to claim it and make himself right at home. His favorite activities include relaxing with his people and soaking up attention after a day of play.Like many young dogs, Ford is also a bit of a counter surfer. His future family will need to help him continue learning good manners around food and keep tempting snacks safely out of reach. With consistency and training, Ford can continue building better habits.Ford could do well with dog-savvy kids aged 12 and older who are comfortable around large, playful, and energetic dogs. Any children in the home should be able to respect his boundaries and handle his enthusiastic, goofy personality.During his cat test, Ford was a little too interested in our feline friends, so he'll also need a cat-free home.Ford is currently taking Fluoxetine and Gabapentin to help manage shelter-related anxiety. These medications cannot be stopped without veterinary approval, and any changes to his treatment plan should be made under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian.Ford is a sweet, energetic boy with a huge heart who is looking for a home that understands his boundaries and appreciates his goofy personality. If you're looking for a loyal companion who loves adventures just as much as cuddling on the couch, Ford is ready to ride shotgun straight into your heart. ❤️Ford was sponsored by Jody Baker “ The Property Toller”! Please note: All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. Each pet also receives a behavioral assessment to help us better understand the type of home they may thrive in. However, it’s important to remember that the results may not fully reflect an animal’s true personality, as shelter and foster environments can be stressful. 17. Sugar
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 47 mi from Blades

In honor of Pit Bull Awareness Month, my adoption fee is WAIVED for the entire month of October! ❤ As sweet as her name, full of kisses, and ready to be treated like the queen she is. Meet Sugar! Meet Sugar!Sugar is a 4-year-old blonde Pit Bull who is every bit as sweet as her name. She came to us as a stray alongside a younger male Pit Bull, and from day one, she has been a spoonful of sugar with everyone she meets.Sugar is a happy-go-lucky girl who absolutely loves people. She'll happily jump up to give you kisses, and if you get down on her level, it's free hugs and full-body wiggles for as long as you can handle them.

She's currently working on keeping all four paws on the floor, but her enthusiasm for making new friends sometimes gets the best of her! When she's not busy showering everyone with affection, Sugar loves playing fetch, chasing after tennis balls, lounging in her room for a good nap, or sitting and watching the world go by. She is the perfect mix of playful and relaxed, always ready for a game and equally happy to settle in for some quiet time.Sugar will need a securely fenced yard with a tall fence, or she will need to remain on leash while outside. She has previously jumped out of a play yard, so her future family will need to be mindful of her athletic abilities and keep her safe. She was cat-tested and showed a little too much interest in our feline friends, so she's looking for a cat-free home. Sugar would also do best as the only dog in the home where she can soak up all the attention for herself.Sugar does appear to have had a litter or two of puppies in the past, and now she's ready to settle into a loving home where she can finally be treated like the queen she is.If you're looking for a cheerful, affectionate companion who gives the best kisses around, Sugar is ready to sweeten your life. ❤️Sugar was sponsored by Jody Baker “ The Property Toller”! How to adopt from Humane Society of Kent County Maryland Inc.
Once you’re ready to adopt, head over to our Adoption Application to fill out and submit the form. Once our Adoption Team has reviewed and approved your application, we will give you a call to schedule an appointment with the pet! When you arrive at ACSKC, you will be greeted by our Adoption Coordinator and taken to meet the pet, either in our Meet and Greet Room or one of the play yards. If you already have pets in the home, you may be asked to bring them with you for a meet and greet to ensure they will get along in the home (this typically only applies to dogs). If you and our Adoption Coordinator feel like it is a good match, we will then finalize the paperwork and send you home with a bag of goodies, including our “Welcoming Your New Pet Home Guide,” toys, treats and a sample bag of their pet food. If it is not a good match, you are welcome to meet the other available pets in the shelter. Your approved application will be kept on file for 90 days, so you’re encouraged to take your time before making a decision!

How to adopt from Kindness Matters Rescue Inc
Typically we intake from high kill shelters/animal control and public surrender. Animals are vetted then transferred to Rescue Partners or directly adopted to the public after spay/neuter application and background check/home check. Our adoption fee ranges from $150-350. Animals are required to be indoor only companion animals, if the adoption fails the animal must be returned to KMR.
Adopting a dog in Blades
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
