Through no fault of her own, Flippers has found herself back with us and searching for a new family to love.To our surprise, Flippers is still very much a puppy at heart! She recently spent time with our behaviorist, where she did very well and showed just how smart and adaptable she can be.Flippers has lived successfully with a small dog and enjoys canine companionship. She has also lived with younger children and did not show any issues. Cats, however, are a little too exciting for Flippers, so she is looking for a cat-free home. Now all she needs is another chance at the forever home she deserves.Could Flippers be the missing piece in your family? This goofy guy came to us as a stray, so we don't know much about his past, but what we do know is that he's packed full of love, muscle, and personality.Boulderface may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he makes up for it with endless affection and an adorable "big doofus" charm. If you move, he's probably coming with you.Still very much a puppy at heart, Boulderface is learning the ropes. He already knows how to sit and usually comes when called, but he's still working on mastering those listening skills. 3. Emmie

Adult · Female · German Shepherd Dog / Husky / Mixed · 31 mi from Highland Acres

❤️ Some dogs need a home. Emmie needs a place to heal. ❤️Meet Emmie — a 7-year-old Husky/German Shepherd mix with a heart as big as her smile.Emmie came to us after her owner had to move in with family, and the resident dog in the home wasn't getting along with her. The family told us, "Emmie is perfect — she definitely wasn't the problem," and after just five minutes with her, you'll understand exactly what they meant.Emmie has done wonderfully with every person she's met. She's gentle, patient, and truly enjoys being part of a family. At this time, Emmie is looking for a quiet, low-stress home with no kids, no dogs, and no cats.

Read more about Emmie

Shelter life has pushed her stress to the max, and we've seen her become more irritable and less tolerant of fast movements, being grabbed quickly, or being told what to do.It's important to note that this is something we've only started seeing after Emmie has spent so much time in the shelter environment. The constant stress and lack of stability have been incredibly hard on her, and we're hopeful that once she's able to decompress in a home setting, these behaviors will improve or disappear altogether. Right now, she simply needs a calm environment where she can feel safe, secure, and not overwhelmed. One thing Emmie is struggling with here at the shelter is eating. Like many animals who come from loving homes, the sudden change has been hard on her. Her previous family tried everything to make the situation work before making the heartbreaking decision to surrender her, and Emmie is feeling that loss too. We've tried countless foods and tricks to help her settle in, but nothing has fully stuck yet. What she does love is human food — she's a girl with taste. If you're someone who enjoys cooking, understands sensitive dogs, and has room in your heart for a companion who desperately wants to feel secure again, Emmie is waiting for you. She's one of those dogs who is simply too good to be anywhere but in a home where she's truly loved.Even if you're not in a position to adopt, we'd love to talk with you about fostering. Getting Emmie out of the shelter, even temporarily, could make a world of difference for her. If you think you can give her a quiet place to decompress and feel safe, please reach out — we're happy to chat about whether fostering or adoption might be the right fit.Emmie deserves a soft place to land, and we're hopeful her person is out there. ❤️This pet has been sponsored and is free for adoption. Please note: All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. Each pet also receives a behavioral assessment to help us better understand the type of home they may thrive in. 4. Peppercorn

Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 31 mi from Highland Acres

In honor of Pit Bull Awareness Month, my adoption fee is WAIVED for the entire month of October! ❤❤️ After years of putting everyone else first, Peppercorn is finally looking for a family who will make her the center of their world. ❤️Meet Peppercorn, a sweet, gentle girl who came to us skinny, alone, and still somehow full of joy. Even on her very first day, she greeted us with a wagging tail and acted like she had known us forever. It didn’t take long for us to see just how much love she has to give.During her dog test, Peppercorn showed us that after likely being bred over and over again, she’s ready for a life where she can finally just be her own dog.

Read more about Peppercorn

She prefers to be the only animal in the home, but with kids she has been nothing but wonderful. She’s patient, affectionate, and we have no concerns about her living with children.Peppercorn recently enjoyed a weekend sleepover with a foster family, where we learned even more about what makes her special. She absolutely adores children and even made several trips to a local middle school, where she happily made dozens of new friends. She loved every bit of the attention and proved what a wonderful family companion she can be.Like many dogs adjusting to life in a home, Peppercorn is still working on a few skills. She will need continued training with counter surfing and would benefit from crate training to help her settle comfortably into her new routine. She's eager to please and ready to learn alongside a family willing to guide her.Peppercorn is also still learning what toys are and how to have fun with them, but she's trying, and it's adorable to watch her discover joy in real time. She also enjoys the simple pleasures in life, especially finding a sunny spot to stretch out and sunbathe. Love, though? She knows that better than anyone. When you look at her, you can guess the past she's had, but you can also see how ready she is for a future filled with kindness, comfort, and a family who will finally treat her the way she deserves. ☀️❤️If you’re looking for a loyal, loving dog who will devote her whole heart to her family, Peppercorn is ready to meet you.Peppercorn's adoption fee is $0, which helps support their medical care and preparation for adoptionPlease note: All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. 9. Mimi

Senior (7 years 2 months) · Female · Poodle (Miniature) (medium coat) · 31 mi from Highland Acres

Hi my name is Mimi! Before you get all excited because I am a poodle, please read all about me. I am a sweet girl, but I must have been used mostly for breeding because I am cautious of new people. I will literally run away from you if you move too quickly and when you do pick me up, I will shake even though I eventually will lean into your touch. It was said that I was about 5 years old when I came into rescue. My teeth were so bad that it was rrally hard to tell. Unfortunately my foster recently noticed that I was coughing and took me back in for a other exam. The vet found a slight heart murmur this time and I am currently on medication for this.

Read more about Mimi

I am doing great and my cough has disappeared. I will be on this for the rest of my life. Otherwise I am a very happy and energetic girl. I get along well with all dogs and cats. I would do best with no children as it take me a while just to warm up to adults. I would like an older quieter family with a fenced in yard so I cam go outside to potty and run and play. I need someone who is going to be patient and allow me to trust them so they can spoil me like I deserve to be. Please consider giving me a life like I have never had and apply for me at www.allmuttsmatter.org.

Fur Ever Paws Dog Rescue is a small no kill rescue operating in the Delaware/Maryland area. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit that rescues and places homeless, neglected or abused dogs from high-kill shelters in the south into loving, responsible committed and permanent homes.

Read more about Bradley

We feel our comprehensive adoption process which includes not only taking the time to match the dog to the prospective new owner but helping to educate that owner in responsible dog care, allows us to find the best homes for our little buddies and the best companions for you!

Each week we use USDA certified transports to bring dogs from high-kill shelters in the south to our fosters where they all receive the appropriate medical care and are placed in nurturing loving homes while they await placement in their forever homes.

Interested in one of our dogs? Great! Now that you've seen them here, you'll need to go to our website where you'll find our list of adoptable dogs (updated every week). Then, it's just a simple process of finding a dog you're interested in and filling out an application on our site.

Once we receive your application, whoever is fostering that particular dog will contact you and do a short over the phone interview to complete your application process. Then, they will set an appointment with you to come out and "visit" with the dog you're interested in (we want to make sure that not only are you a good fit for the dog but that the dog will fit with you). If everything works out, you'll be able to take Rover (or Spot, or Jax) home with you that very day.

A couple of things you should know:

We can't hold dogs over the phone or via email.
Adoption fees vary based on breed.
All of our dogs have been vet checked and dewormed (if possible due to age, additional treatment may be needed).
We provide a spay or neuter voucher to all of our adopters.

Once our Adoption Team has reviewed and approved your application, we will give you a call to schedule an appointment with the pet! When you arrive at ACSKC, you will be greeted by our Adoption Coordinator and taken to meet the pet, either in our Meet and Greet Room or one of the play yards. If you already have pets in the home, you may be asked to bring them with you for a meet and greet to ensure they will get along in the home (this typically only applies to dogs). If you and our Adoption Coordinator feel like it is a good match, we will then finalize the paperwork and send you home with a bag of goodies, including our “Welcoming Your New Pet Home Guide,” toys, treats and a sample bag of their pet food. If it is not a good match, you are welcome to meet the other available pets in the shelter. Your approved application will be kept on file for 90 days, so you’re encouraged to take your time before making a decision!

Applications are reviewed by an AMMF volunteer, background checks are performed, vet and personal references checked, and a home visit is performed by an AMMF volunteer with applicant and all family members living in the home. All dogs older then 5 months are spayed/neutered, all shots up-to-date, microchipped, wormed, heartworm & lyme tested. Adoption fee for dogs older then 5 months is $295. Puppies up to 5 months old, the adoption fee is $300.00. Dogs and puppies who go to homes that have other pets and/or children, will stay on a foster-to-adopt basis for at least two weeks to insure that everyone adjusts well to each other and then if all is well, the adoption is finalized, which includes a legally binding contract signed by all parties. If for any reason, at anytime, the family cannot keep the dog, then he/she comes back to AMMF.

Adopting a dog in Highland Acres

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
