24. Nikko
Senior (10 years) · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat)

A day in the life of a North Chicago Animal Control pup. My name is Nikko. I currently reside in the loving care of my hero, Damien. He is the animal warden at NCAC. I enjoy lounging on the couch, hanging out in my run, going for walks with volunteers, eating treats and basking in the sun like a beached whale! I am the ripe age of 10 years old. The world was not always so kind to me. I came to this place severely emaciated and with a large tumor on my face. I was in good spirits but nonetheless losing my faith in this life. My hero scooped me up and brought me to shelter. He nurtured me to health and learned I have some specifications when it come's to being handled. I don't trust too easily. In this new chapter of my life I am looking for a fresh start. I want to retire in a quiet home with one or 2 loving older humans. I am not very fond of children as I spent very little time around them and in my older years I prefer calmness and predictability. I am pretty low energy and dont require too much more than a coxy dog bed, a few walks and a yard would be nice for some sun tanning. I promise to be lazy, fat and not judge you personally. Consider taking me home and maybe we can fade into the sunshine together.

25. Moe
Adult (1 year 7 months) · Male · Unknown breed (short coat)

Moe is a young Boxer mix with a big personality and a loving heart. He’s potty trained, crate trained, listens well, and does great with other dogs. Moe is generally good-natured and likes to stay close to his people—he enjoys being part of whatever’s going on.
Moe loves toys and snuggles and has an active, playful side that will thrive with an engaged family. He would do best in an active home that can provide structure, exercise, and continued training. Because Moe can get mouthy during play, he should not be placed in a home with small children.
Read more about Moe
Moe will need an experienced dog owner. While he shows no signs of aggression in daily life, he has reacted with little warning when medications are applied to his ears or skin during treatment for infections. Outside of these situations, he is affectionate and stable. His future family should be comfortable working with a veterinarian and using management strategies for medical care.
One thing to note—Moe is curious and a known countertop surfer! Food should be kept out of reach, as he won’t hesitate to help himself if given the chance.
Moe is looking for a knowledgeable, active home that understands his needs and will love him for the fun, loyal companion he is. With the right fit, Moe will be a devoted sidekick ready for adventure, play, and plenty of cuddle time.

He loves following his people around, playing with toys, and having fun with his favorite canine friends.Turnip is still working on his potty training, puppy manners, and leash skills, but he is making progress. He is also learning that boundaries are a good thing, and his future family will need to be willing to continue that work with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement.Turnip is good with children, but he is dog selective. New dogs need to be introduced slowly and carefully, with supervision. Turnip tends to be a dominant personality and can bully more submissive dogs, so he does best with dogs who are confident and comfortable setting appropriate boundaries with him. Because of this, another dog in his forever home would need to be a good match, and introductions are a very important part of finding that fit.And one thing we want to be very honest about: Turnip needs an adopter who is comfortable setting boundaries and calmly correcting unwanted behaviors. He is a wonderful dog, and is still learning how to be the best version of himself. He needs someone who will lovingly show him what is expected while also giving him the time and consistency to learn.Turnip would thrive with an active family who enjoys getting outside and keeping their dog busy. A fenced yard would be a wonderful bonus, especially for a boy with his energy level, but an active family who enjoys walks and adventures could also be a great fit. Most importantly, Turnip needs someone who will see the dog he is today—not the neglected dog who first arrived at rescue—and give him the chance to continue becoming the happy, healthy, loved dog he was always meant to be. He has already overcome so much. Now he just needs his person. If you're looking for a goofy, affectionate, energetic Velcro dog who will happily follow you from room to room, play with his toys, cuddle up with his people, and keep you laughing along the way, Turnip may be your guy. He isn’t perfect—and he doesn't need to be. He just needs the right person willing to love him, guide him, set boundaries, and give him the forever he has waited so patiently for. 28. Moe
Young · Male · Boxer / Mixed

Moe is a young Boxer mix with a big personality and a loving heart. He’s potty trained, crate trained, listens well, and does great with other dogs. Moe is generally good-natured and likes to stay close to his people—he enjoys being part of whatever’s going on.Moe loves toys and snuggles and has an active, playful side that will thrive with an engaged family. He would do best in an active home that can provide structure, exercise, and continued training. Because Moe can get mouthy during play, he should not be placed in a home with small children.Moe will need an experienced dog owner.

Food should be kept out of reach, as he won’t hesitate to help himself if given the chance.Moe is looking for a knowledgeable, active home that understands his needs and will love him for the fun, loyal companion he is. Adopting a dog in Lake County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
