1. Tatiana
Adult (2 years 6 months) · Female · Black Labrador Retriever (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Tatiana showed up as a stray on a rural Mower County property towards the end of October 2026, and she came to MCHS on 10/26/2026 after the finders held her for a few days. Efforts were made to see if anyone recognized her as the stray hold went on, and she was never owner claimed, so she became available for adoption. She looks to be a purebred black lab and we think she's 2 to 3 years old. She has the typical boisterous and exuberant personality of a lab. She will be vet checked and spayed on November 11th and her fee is $150.
Read more about Tatiana
Tatiana will need some basic training and regular exercise. She's a pretty strong gal. Labs are a lot of fun and can be pretty rambunctious until they reach a more mature age (like 5, 6, 7, etc...). Tatiana is fun loving and happy. We do think she'd do okay with a male dog of similar size and with older kids.

2. Sprout
Puppy (1 month 23 days) · Female · Hound / Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Sprout (female) is 1 of 9 puppies born at the shelter on September 8th to mother dog Lenore, who appears to be a hound mix. We do not know the father's identity, but we're wondering if the puppies could be mixed with lab or golden retriever, just going by the appearances of some of them. We do expect these puppies to be fairly large dogs at maturity. Sprout will be ready for a new home around the middle of November, after she has had her 2nd of 3 distemper/parvo vaccinations. Her basic vet work will be scheduled with her adopter and must be done WITH one of our vet partners. This includes her 3rd distemper/parvo vaccination, and, when she is old enough, her rabies shot and spay surgery. All of this is covered by us under the adoption fee of $150.

Puppies require a whole lot of time, patience, and training. They are looking for secure, committed homes, ready to keep them for the entirety of their lives. It's not always an easy journey. Sprout and her siblings should do well with other dogs, and they are all young enough to learn to interact appropriately with cats. Very young children might not be suitable as the pups develop manners and learn not to nip and chew. They need homes in which they won't be alone for long hours.

11. Lenore
Adult (2 years 6 months) · Female · Hound / Husky / Mixed (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Lenore came to the shelter on 8/14/2026 after being found loose in a rural area. We realized pretty quickly after her arrival that she was not alone, and she gave birth to 9 puppies on 9/8/2026. Once her mothering duties were completed and the pups were ready, they all quickly received numerous applications. Lenore is approximately 2 to 3 years old and appears to be a hound mix, possibly coonhound, foxhound, or maybe even beagle. She does have one blue eye so there could be some husky or Australian shepherd in there. She will be fully vetted, including her spay, on Nov. 13th and her fee is $150.
Read more about Lenore
Lenore is finally done being a mom and now this truly special dog is waiting to find a new family. She loves people and wants nothing more than to hang with them. She has done a great job wrangling and raising her 9 babies. She is well mannered and happy-go-lucky. She might need a bit of basic obedience training but does pretty well with leash walking. We do think she would be okay with a nice male dog. Kids should be fine, too. We don't know about cats.

12. Claudette
Adult (2 years) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Claudette arrived at MCHS on 10/23/2026 from the city pound, and she has quite the story. Two weeks before she came to us, she was found tied to the fence next to the dumpster between our shelter and the city pound. As we expected, no one claimed her from the pound, so after her stray hold was completed, we took her in for her fresh start. She is a pit bull type dog who seems to be around 2 years old, if not a smidge younger. She has been vet checked, spayed, and microchipped, and her fee is $150.
Read more about Claudette
Claudette is a happy and active gal who will need a bit of basic training and regular exercise. She has a pretty delightful personality. We're thinking she would do fine with kids, but supervision is always necessary as she is strong and very bouncy. She potentially could do well with a respectful male dog, but she doesn't seem to be fan of other females, which is not unusual. No smaller animals would probably be best.

13. Ralph
Adult (1 year 3 months) · Male · Shepherd / Cattle Dog / Mixed (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Ralph came to the shelter as an owner surrender on 10/22/2026. His owners had to move into a rental that did not allow pets. Ralph is a big boy who weighs around 70 pounds and only turned a year old in July. He has the coloring of a red heeler (cattle dog) but otherwise reminds us of shepherd breeds, like German or Anatolian. There are probably some other breeds in there, too. He is tentatively scheduled to be vet checked and neutered on November 13th, and his fee is $150.
Read more about Ralph
Ralph is a very sensitive, loving dog. He needs a home that is able to provide him with the exercise he needs. He has had some basic training and is intelligent and ready for more. Ralph has done well with kids and has been okay with other dogs. He has never been around cats. He would be a great companion for someone who is active and looking for a true partner.

She eats in her kennel and sleeps through the night in it. Zena is a very young puppy so she will need time to become fully house trained, but she is doing pretty good so far for her age. She has adjusted well to being on a leash and needs continued experience with it. Zena is being fostered with her brother Zion and 2 other large dogs that are helping her learn how to interact and play with other dogs. One of Zena's favorite past-times is jumping into leaf piles and chasing her brother through them. She is a very smart puppy and has already learned to sit, stay, and come when given the command.

19. Wrangler
Adult (3 years 4 months) · Male · Hound / Mountain Cur / Mixed (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Wrangler arrived from the city pound on 10/13/2026 when his legal stray hold was finished. Going by the way he looks and sounds, he appears to be a mix of hound breeds. There could be some mountain cur, some beagle, or some catahoula in there. He is a medium-sized boy and we're guessing he's 3 to 4 years old. He has been vet checked, neutered, and microchipped, and his fee is $150.
Read more about Wrangler
Wrangler is an active, bouncy, and talkative dog who does like to make his opinion known. He has an enthusiastic zest for life. He will require regular exercise and might need a bit of basic obedience training. He is definitely a fun-loving guy who doesn't seem like he'd have a problem with other playful dogs. Cats are probably a no. Kids over 5 would be best. Not a dog for apartment living.
NOTE: Adoptions are done via private appointment once an application has been completed and approved. Applications must be submitted at our website, mchs.rescuegroups.org.
We are located at 101 22nd St. SE in Austin, right next to the airport. It's exit 180B off of I-90, right off of 218 South.

20. Simba
Puppy (3 months 16 days) · Male · Black Mouth Cur / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 97 mi from Waterloo

Simba is an approximate 15-week-old, 25 lb., male, possible Black Mouth Cur/Lab mix puppy. He and his 3 siblings came from Oklahoma recently where they endured some instability the first several weeks of their life. Their owner did not take steps to secure the puppies on the property and after they began to wander out of the yard, they were dumped in different parts of town. Thankfully some kind people were eventually able to round up all 5 puppies in the litter, along with their momma, and get them into a secure, temporary foster home while they waited for transport to Hope Animal Rescue of Iowa. He is scheduled for his neuter surgery and rabies vaccination on Tuesday, November 3. Simba and his siblings are sweet puppies with a lot of potential. They just need a family that can be patient with them as they learn how to trust people fully and help them gain experience with all the new things life has to offer them.
Read more about Simba
Simba is a sweet little guy with a big heart and an even bigger personality waiting to come out of its shell. At first, he might hang back and take a moment to size you up — but give him a treat and a little patience, and you'll meet the playful, wiggly goofball hiding underneath. Once he's comfortable, Simba is all energy: zoomies around the yard, pouncing on toys, and flopping down for belly rubs when he's finally worn out. He's looking for a family who will let him warm up at his own pace and then keep up with his playful spirit. If you've got a cozy lap, a few toys, and a little patience, Simba is ready to be your new best friend. He is working on house training since his life has been spent living outdoors until he came into our rescue. Simba is currently living with his sister Nala and foster dogs and a cat.

Meet Boone!
Boone is an approximately 14-week-old, 18-pound rugged little country boy with a nose for adventure who may be a Black Mouth Cur/Lab mix. This sweet boy has a story to tell and a whole lot of growing, learning, and flourishing left to do!
Boone, four of his siblings, and their mama were rescued after roaming at large in a rural Oklahoma town for many weeks. Four of the puppies made their way to Iowa in mid-October and have been decompressing, adjusting to indoor life, and discovering what it means to be a puppy in a safe and loving environment.
Read more about Boone
Boone and his sister Daisy share a foster home and rely heavily on each other for security. Both are slowly learning to trust humans and are taking their cues from their foster siblings.
Of the two, Boone is the more timid and stand-offish, but underneath that uncertainty is a little boy who so desperately wants to be loved. He wants to be right there beside you, to be cuddled and reassured, but he hasn't quite found the courage to let his guard down yet. He just needs someone willing to let him move at his own pace and show him that the world can be a safe and wonderful place.
Together, Boone and Daisy are becoming typical, mischievous puppies! They find joy in every new discovery, get into a little trouble along the way, and love enjoying the cooler autumn days in their fenced-in backyard.
Boone would benefit tremendously from having a friendly, confident canine companion in his forever home to serve as a role model, help him navigate new experiences, and reinforce the lessons he’ll need to become a well-adjusted, confident dog. He needs a committed, patient adopter who understands that earning his trust takes time and consistency. With steady guidance, structure, encouragement, and plenty of love, Boone can build his confidence, develop his potential, and grow into the strong, loyal, and devoted companion he is meant to be.

Nala is the kind of puppy who steals your heart quietly — one shy glance at a time. She's a little reserved when you first meet her, preferring to watch the world from a safe spot before deciding you're trustworthy. But it doesn't take long: a gentle voice, a soft toy, and suddenly she's bouncing around with her tail wagging a mile a minute. Playful to her core, Nala loves a good game of fetch, a squeaky toy, and any adventure that ends with cuddles. She's looking for a patient, loving home where she can blossom at her own pace — and reward you with endless affection once she does. 24. Dan
Puppy (3 months 21 days) · Male · Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat) · 97 mi from Waterloo

Meet Dan! He is an approximate 16-week-old, male, 22 lb., possible Shepherd mix. Dan is a sweet, goofy puppy. He’s likely to grow into a big, active boy, so he’s looking for a family that’s ready to put in the time and effort to help him become the very best dog he can be. Right now, Dan is busy learning how to be a dog. He’s working on crate training, potty training, and walking on a leash, but he’s still very much a baby, and his new family will need to pick up where his foster home leaves off. The good news? He’s a smart little guy who wants to please, and he’s eager to learn. Dan is also a bit of a character. He loves sprawling out on cool floors, galloping awkwardly around the yard, and settling in with a good chewy stick. He’s quite talkative, too, and has a habit of muttering to himself when he’s sleepy. (We don’t know what he’s saying, but we suspect he has some strong opinions). He currently lives in a foster home with other dogs and cats and is doing well with both. Dan’s future family should be prepared for a large, energetic dog who will need regular exercise, mental stimulation, and continued training. With patience, consistency, and a little humor, though, we think Dan is going to grow up to be a pretty fantastic dog. If you’re ready for all the fun, work, and occasional chaos that comes with raising a puppy, Dan would love to meet you!

25. Paisley
Adult (7 years) · Female · Cocker Spaniel (medium coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Paisley is a purebred cocker spaniel who came to MCHS as an owner surrender on 10/8/2026 due to rental restrictions. She is a calm and rather stocky mature lady who is around 7 years old. She's a little unsure of things at the shelter right now, but that's not unusual. She has been vet checked, spayed, and microchipped, and her fee is $150.
Read more about Paisley
We're hoping to find Paisley a home that has some experience with cocker spaniels, as they can be rather high maintenance dogs. She would especially love a somewhat calm home in which she won't be left alone a lot. She will require some regular grooming to keep her coat tangle free, with extra attention on her beautiful ears and fluffy feet. She has done okay with male dogs and older kids. She has never been around cats.
NOTE: Adoptions are done via private appointment once an application has been completed and approved. Applications must be submitted at our website, mchs.rescuegroups.org.

Meet Luther! This handsome Hound mix came to Safe Haven as a stray, and unfortunately, no one has come forward to claim him. While we’re still getting to know Luther and learning more about his personality, what we can tell you so far is that he is a very well tempered, easygoing guy. He walks nicely on a leash and has that classic Hound bark that lets you know he has something to say! Luther has handled shelter life ok and seems ready to find the people who will give him the second chance he deserves. Since he is still new to us, we’ll continue getting to know him and will update his profile as we learn more about his likes, personality, and what he’s looking for in his forever home. If you’re looking for a sweet Hound mix and don’t mind getting to know a new best friend along the way, come meet Luther!

Adult (3 years 1 month) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Brittany / Mixed (medium coat) · 52 mi from Waterloo

This girl is a QUEEN and she is ready to be treated like ROYALTY!
Queen, or Queenie as we have been calling her, is a beautiful black labrador mix - we've been told that she's perhaps a Brittany Lab mix, which could account for her petite size and playful demeanor!
Read more about Queen
Queenie is a loving and friendly girl, she's never met a stranger and she's got a playful and infectious energy that is sure to make you smile when you're with her. Queenie has lived easily with other dogs and children. We find her to be a higher energy dog so she will be best suited to an active and outgoing dog owner who knows they need to earn their couch potato time after burning off the labrador energy!
Queenie's adoption fee is $250 and includes her spay, microchip, current vaccines/(4DX)heartworm testing and current monthly preventatives. Queenie is seeking a home where she can live as an indoor companion only, if you would like to meet her please submit an adoption application at Adopthope.org. 29. Zara
Adult (6 years) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Zara came to the shelter from the city pound on 9/7/2026, after spending over 4 weeks there and more than fulfilling her legal stray hold. She is large and muscular and looks to be mostly a pit bull type dog, estimated at around 6 years old. She has been vet checked, spayed, and microchipped, and her fee is $150. She had to have a long line of mammary tumors surgically removed in late October 2026, and there were no signs of cancer found after this fairly extensive procedure. She is completely healthy and ready for a new home!
Read more about Zara
Zara is an absolute sweetheart who has won over our volunteers and the staff at the vet's office. She does seem to have had some basic training. She seems like she would do well with children and male dogs but we're thinking no smaller animals, like cats, would be best for her. She will need some regular exercise and enjoys a good cuddle, too. She would make a lovely companion!

30. Caesar
Senior (9 years 1 month) · Male · German Shepherd Dog (short coat) · 88 mi from Waterloo

Caesar, then about 3 years old, was originally adopted from our shelter in March 2020, not too long after his arrival, and he lived a happy life with his people for over 6 years. Sadly, his life changed drastically when both of his owners passed away over the course of a couple of years. In September 2026, family members had to make the truly tough decision to return Caesar to the shelter. We would like to see him back in a home as soon as possible. He has been updated on all vet work, thoroughly examined, and microchipped, and his fee is $125. He is in great health and it's hard to believe he is around 9 years old!
Read more about Caesar
Caesar appears to be a white German shepherd, if not a mix, and he looks great for an older dog. He's a sensitive, intelligent, and loving gentleman who has had some basic training. He's still pretty athletic and has been known to jump fences so a secure environment is important. He's well mannered and has done well around other calmer dogs and older kids. Cats? We're not really sure. He will also need some regular exercise, followed by some couch time. He would love a home in which someone is home most of the time. Help us find the perfect retirement home for this handsome and wonderful dog!

Adopting a dog with children in Waterloo
Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.
Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.
Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
