2. Buffy

Senior · Female · Shih Tzu · 11 mi from Diamondhead

Buffy is a 13-year-old Shih Tzu with the heart of a teddy bear and the soul of a professional napper. Buffy came to us in 2023 after her beloved owner entered hospice care.Buffy is truly a love bug. She adores people, loves being a lap dog, and would happily spend her days snoozing beside you or curled up in bed at night. She gets along wonderfully with cats, dogs, and small children making her an easy addition to most homes. She’s calm, affectionate, and happiest when she’s close to her humans.Over the years, we worked hard to solve Buffy’s allergy issues and finally discovered she is allergic to grass, lamb, and coconut.

Read more about Buffy

Thankfully, she is now doing great on medication and her adopter will receive a full year supply of Zenrelia to help keep her comfortable. Buffy is also an absolute professional at taking her medicine especially if cheese or a pill pocket is involved.Buffy does have some special needs that come with being a senior lady. She is visually impaired and has limited depth perception, which means she can accidentally tumble off beds or couches if left unattended. She also doesn’t love having her face groomed or her eyes cleaned, though she behaves beautifully for the rest of her spa day. Buffy is also hard of hearing… selectively, of course. She may ignore loud noises during nap time, but somehow can still hear a snack bag from another room.Speaking of snacks....if food exists anywhere nearby, Buffy firmly believes she deserves some too. Her nose is fully operational and always on duty.Buffy is fully housetrained and does best going outside every 6 hours during the day, though she happily sleeps through the night. She is looking for a loving home that understands senior dogs deserve comfort, patience, and lots of soft places to nap.If you’re searching for a sweet, loyal companion who will fill your home with love, snuggles, and a little bit of comedy, Buffy may be your perfect match.PLEASE READ THIS TO ADOPT: ALL ANIMALS ARE CURRENTLY IN LONG BEACH, MISSISSIPPI. 3. Nova

Puppy (7 months) · Female · German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) · 50 mi from Diamondhead

Nova is a 7-month-old bundle of puppy joy who's back with us and ready to find her forever home. She was adopted three months ago and recently returned through no fault of her own. Her loss is your gain, because this girl is a delight!

This little girl has LOADS of puppy energy and plays relentlessly with her German Shepherd foster brother. She's very much a puppy in every sense of the word, so she's looking for a home that's ready to match her enthusiasm with daily, appropriate exercise, playtime, and ongoing training and socialization.

Read more about Nova

Nova is "extra". She hollers. She’s loud. And she will tell you all about it, in great detail, with full commentary.

We love her for it and we love her opinions.

Even with all that energy, Nova shows manners around her elderly canine foster brother. She respects his space and lets him enjoy his quiet time.

Because we make every effort to set our puppies and their new families up for success, Nova's adopter will be required to complete an NOGSR-approved training course.

If you have the time, energy, and heart for a playful pup who will grow into a wonderful companion, we'd love to hear from you. She will be available for adoption after she is been spayed later this week. Apply at nogsr.org.

4. Duchess

Young (1 year 8 months) · Female · German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) · 50 mi from Diamondhead

Here's Duchess — Found eating trash in the street, she'd landed in a small, hot, rural shelter. Now, thanks to some amazing volunteers, she is safely with our rescue. She is a young (between 1 and 2 years old) petite, 50-lb sweetheart looking for her forever family!

Don't let her smaller size fool you, she's got a big heart. Duchess is affectionate, snuggly, and just wants to be near her people (or curled up in your lap, if you'll let her). She's an absolute doll — her foster put it best: "She is a catch!"

A few things that make her extra special:

Loves other dogs — she settled right in with her GSD foster sister showing her the ropes

Still working up her courage around squeaky toys unless she's the instigator (they're just a little alarming — give her time!)

Spayed and up to date on all vaccines

She is heartworm positive and has already started her treatment, fully covered by NOGSR and a generous benefactor, so cost will not be a barrier to giving her a home

Duchess deserves a forever home of her own. Could that be with you?

5. Paxton

Adult (4 years 2 months) · Male · German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) · 50 mi from Diamondhead

Meet Paxton, a handsome 4-year-old German Shepherd looking for his forever family!

A little about him: Paxton is lovely and affectionate, and very chill in the house. He is incredibly smart and is able to play nicely on his own. He is extremely sweet and affectionate with his people. Per his foster, he has been an absolute joy to have around. He was even a very good boy at the vet when he went for his vaccines. He is very smart and has already learned "sit", "down", "leave it", and is working on more.

Read more about Paxton

Paxton is heartworm positive and has already started treatment. With proper care and treatment (handled by the rescue), he is expected to make a full recovery and go on to live a long, healthy life.

We are still learning how he feels about other dogs. Like many German Shepherds, he can be reactive to dogs while on leash, but has not shown reactivity to anything else at this time. An adopter with some experience and patience around leash reactivity and a willingness to work with him on this, would be a great fit for him because he is an amazing boy.

Paxton is up to date on vaccines and is neutered.

Breezy is calm and easygoing at home, incredibly intelligent, and a joy to train. He is on medication to help with separation anxiety— his adopter would simply continue that protocol. As of now, separation anxiety is no longer an issue for him!

UPDATE: Baby Girl and her foster are working on her socialization/interactions with dogs and people once a week with a local, certified, positive reinforcement trainer. Adopting a dog in Diamondhead

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
