1. Roxy

Senior · Female · Rat Terrier / Mixed

Meet Roxy! 15 years young and still full of love to give!Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn, and through no fault of her own, sweet Roxy finds herself looking for a new place to call home. Roxy was surrendered by a family who loved her dearly, and while starting over at 15 years old isn’t easy, she has so much love left to give to the right family.Roxy is a sweet, affectionate girl whose favorite place to be is right by your side. She’s happiest simply being near her people, soaking up all the love and attention she can get. Don’t let her age fool you, though! She still enjoys the occasional play session with her favorite toys, but what she especially loves is spending time with her dog friends.Roxy gets along wonderfully with both dogs and cats, making her a lovely addition to a home with other furry companions.

Read more about Roxy

She’s more of a homebody and can be nervous in unfamiliar environments or out in public. Car rides aren’t exactly her idea of a good time either! She isn’t difficult in the car, but she does tend to shake and sometimes whine throughout the ride. A cozy home and a predictable routine are much more her speed. When meeting new people, Roxy can be a little shy and skittish at first. She just needs some time, patience, and reassurance to feel comfortable. But once she lets you into her heart, get ready for a little shadow! She becomes incredibly attached to her people and would happily spend her days following you from room to room.As far as her medical history goes, Roxy has an asymptomatic grade 2 heart murmur and mild arthritis. Otherwise, she’s doing wonderfully for a girl her age! She also has a little skin tag on her face, which is purely cosmetic and causes her no medical issues. And honestly, Roxy knows she’s adorable with or without it!Roxy may be 15, but she still has plenty of cuddles, companionship, and love to offer. She’s not looking for grand adventures or a busy lifestyle. She just wants a soft place to land, a family to call her own, and someone who will let her spend her golden years feeling safe, loved, and cherished.Applications can be filled out at www.piedmontanimalrescue.com/adopt! 7. Hazelnut

Young (2 years) · Female · Unknown breed

In a nutshell, Hazelnut is a kind-hearted shepherd girl. Not only does she have a beautiful, silky coat, but she absolutely melts into pets and has the gentlest, soulful facial expressions. One look into her dreamy eyes and you'll want to curl up beside her and spend the whole day together!

Read more about Hazelnut

When Hazelnut first arrived at the BRC, she was very worried about the world and its scary sights and sounds. Everyday unfamiliar things were terrifying for her. With lots of patience, support and treats, she was able to move quickly through her treatment here — she even became a helper dog for other dogs in treatment! In her time with us, she has blossomed into a resilient young dog, and she is ready to find a home that will help her continue to become more comfortable with the world!

Hazelnut is an active dog who thrives when she gets regular activity. She finds lots of joy in things like exploring on walks, playing with other dogs, zooming around fenced-in areas, pets from familiar people and using her big brain for training games! Although she’s an active girl, she also has a pleasantly relaxed side. She has been able to settle nicely for “office time” with our staff, where she’s happy to curl up on the couch, snooze and just hang out.

When it comes to other dogs, Hazelnut is what we call a true social butterfly. She enjoys interacting with other dogs and does well matching their energy. She’s down for some high-energy chase games with fellow playful pups, but she is also down to just coexist with mellower dogs. While having other dogs nearby helps boost her confidence in new situations, Hazelnut has shown that she’s capable of forming relationships with people on her own, too.

If you’re looking for a sweet and playful companion, Hazelnut would love to meet you! Click the “Submit an Adoption Inquiry” button below to learn more about Hazelnut!

19. Baby Stripes

2 Years · Female · Unknown breed

Introducing Baby Stripes! Baby Stripes is a playful and cuddly girl who finds joy in socializing with other dogs, cozying up with a nice blanket and snacking on a chew stick. She recently spent time in a foster home where she was described as “cartoon-like” when she played with the resident dogs and people — and we could not agree more!

Read more about Baby Stripes

Baby Stripes was originally found as a stray and came into our care with fear of new people, new situations and leash walking. She has made a lot of progress in her time here and has graduated into a resilient, companion pup who is ready to find a home of her own. Baby Stripes is seeking a home where she can continue to grow her confidence and build resilience.

Baby Stripes truly loves other dogs and has made many dog friends, both here at the BRC and with the resident dogs in her foster home. She enjoys some light wrestling and chase games with her pals and has even been a helper dog for our other pups!

Baby Stripes can take a little longer to warm up to new people before showing her animated self, but she has enjoyed incorporating treats when meeting new friends! She also gains confidence while in the presence of other dogs. Once you’re her friend, Baby Stripes enjoys petting, playing and even cuddling in your lap!

If you’re looking for a shy but sweet snuggle buddy, Baby Stripes is your girl! Click the “Submit an Adoption Inquiry” button below to learn more about Baby Stripes!

Please note: The ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center does not charge adoption fees. Our meet-and-greets take place in Weaverville, North Carolina. If you do not receive a response from us after submitting an inquiry, please check your "Spam" folder as it may have been sent there.

21. Jethro

Young · Male · Maremma Sheepdog

Sweet and eager to please, Jethro is a gem of a dog. Having spent so much time in a shelter, he of course needs to learn the rules of the house, but is very receptive to correction (and treats!). During play, he is alert and observant of others boundaries. He has an excellent off switch; moving from play to down time inside is not an issue for this guy.Don't let his size fool you; he is a giant baby who wants nothing more than to cuddle in your lap. He is wary of cats (a kitten once hissed at him and he cowered into my arms) but young enough to learn that they are house mates. With time and training, he will be the perfect family pet.Puppies 6 months and under are typically $200 and dogs from 7 months to 6 years are typically $100.00.

22. Kilough

Puppy (9 months) · Male · Rottweiler (short coat)

Meet Kilough, an absolute dream of an 8-month-old Rottweiler puppy who is ready to steal your heart!

Read more about Kilough

Kilough is as stunning as he is smart. With his classic handsome Rottie looks and impressive intelligence, he’s the total package. He is a super loving, eager-to-please boy who thinks everyone he meets—adults and kids alike—is his new best friend. He also gets along great with other dogs and loves to play! Since he is still a young, intact pup waiting until he's old enough for his neuter, he can occasionally get hyper-focused on other male dogs and show typical puppy humping behaviors, but with consistent redirection and his eventual neuter, he’ll easily navigate social settings.

This brilliant pup is already way ahead of the game! He is:

Fully housebroken

Crate trained

Up to date on all age-appropriate vetting

Microchipped

His Ideal Home: Kilough is a high-energy, highly intelligent working breed puppy. He isn't just looking for a yard to hang out in—he needs an active home that will provide both physical exercise and daily mental stimulation (think puzzle toys, trick training, or agility games!). Because he is so smart and eager to learn, structured training will be the key to helping him thrive and grow into the incredible companion he’s destined to be.

If you’re looking for a playful, loyal, and brainy best friend to join your active family, Kilough is ready to fill your home with endless love and fun!

27. Meatball

Young · Female · Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed

Meet Meatball, a beautiful retriever mix around a year old who has already experienced more hardship than any dog should.Meatball was dumped at another facility that was already struggling with overcrowding. On top of that, this sweet girl is heartworm positive and currently working on gaining some much-needed weight. Despite everything she’s been through, she has maintained the most incredibly gentle, loving, and docile personality. And guys, when we say this girl is SWEET, we mean it!Meatball is genuinely one of those dogs who just seems to love everyone she meets. She does phenomenally with other dogs and adjusts beautifully to just about any playstyle, whether her friends are rambunctious or more laid-back.

She loves children, has shown little interest in our office cats, and is an absolute dream on a leash! She’s still a young dog who enjoys playing and having fun, but she’s not excessively energetic. She’s a wonderful balance of playful and laid-back, making her a great fit for so many different lifestyles.PLEASE DON’T LET HER HEARTWORM DIAGNOSIS SCARE YOU AWAY!We are covering 100% of the cost of Meatball’s heartworm treatment! All we need is someone willing to open their heart and home to this deserving girl, provide the TLC she needs, and give her a safe, loving place to recover.Meatball has spent enough of her short life being let down. We want the rest of her story to be filled with full bellies, soft beds, endless love, and a family who will never give up on her. She’s only a year old. She has her whole life ahead of her, and we desperately want that life to be a good one. ❤️We also want to take a moment to remind everyone just how important community support is. It is because of YOUR donations and continued support that we are able to pull dogs like Meatball who have medical needs that many already overwhelmed facilities simply don’t have the resources to take on. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us give animals like her a chance they might not have had otherwise. We truly could not do what we do without you, and Meatball is a perfect example of the lives your generosity helps us save. ❤️Puppies 6 months and under are typically $200 and dogs from 7 months to 6 years are typically $100.00. Adopting a dog in Burke County

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
