6. Winnie
Adult (2 years) · Female · Wheaten Terrier / Schnauzer (long coat)

Winnie has no idea that she’s special — but she is. To her, she’s just a happy, playful dog living her best life. Winnie was born with a cerebellum that didn’t fully develop in utero, a condition believed to be cerebellar hypoplasia. This affects her balance and gives her a uniquely wobbly, slightly unsteady way of walking. It doesn’t cause her pain, and it certainly doesn’t dim her spirit. Winnie is, without question, the happiest dog her foster family has ever met.
Read more about Winnie
For the most part, Winnie is a normal dog: she plays, she explores, she loves her people, and she radiates joy. She simply needs a family willing to love and care for her exactly as she is — wobbles and all.
Winnie would thrive in a home with another gentle dog her size or larger who can play with her, keep her company, and help her feel secure. She adores canine friends and blossoms with companionship.
Winnie is up to date on all vaccines and preventatives, has been spayed, and is microchipped. Any children in the home should be at least 8 years of age. She also requires a fenced in yard, physical fencing attached to the home
Winnie doesn’t know she’s different — she only knows she’s loved. If you’re looking for a dog who will brighten your home with pure happiness and endless heart, Winnie may be the perfect match.

7. Ernest
Adult (3 years) · Male · Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat)

Ernest is an approximately 3‑year‑old sweetheart with a calm, affectionate nature and a touch of playful confidence. He has an absolutely adorable little underbite that makes him look like he’s smiling all the time, and it suits his gentle, goofy charm perfectly. He can be a bit bossy with dogs who don’t like to listen, but in a home with well‑mannered canine companions, he settles in beautifully.
Read more about Ernest
When Ernest first arrived in foster care, he wanted to be close to his people without actually touching. With patience and reassurance, he has blossomed into a cuddler. He’ll happily stretch out on your chest for a bit before sliding over to relax right beside you. His foster family has loved watching him learn that affection is safe and comforting.
Ernest enjoys playing with the other dogs in his foster home, and he will do best in a home with at least one friendly canine companion. He thrives with dogs who are kind, confident, and not easily pushed around.
Ernest is up to date on all vaccines and preventatives, has been microchipped, and is neutered. Because of his coat type, he will require regular professional grooming, and his ideal family will have experience with maintaining a dog who needs consistent coat care.
Ernest is a gentle, loving boy who’s ready for a family that will continue helping him grow in confidence and enjoy the comfort of companionship. If you’re looking for a sweet dog with a tender heart, a playful spirit, and a smile that never quits, Ernest may be the perfect addition to your home.

11. Pebbles
Young (5 months 6 days) · Female · Beagle / Hound / Mixed (short coat)

Pebbles is a young, spirited beagle girl who doesn’t let anything slow her down — not even the fact that she’s missing her right rear foot. Her veterinarian has confirmed she’s healthy and thriving; she simply needs her leg wrapped or covered with a bootie during play and outdoor time to keep it protected. Pebbles doesn’t mind one bit. She’s far too busy exploring, learning, and having fun.
This sharp little lady loves to play and has a confident, sometimes bossy streak. Because she’s a beagle with a nose that can lead her into mischief, Pebbles requires a securely fenced yard attached to the home to keep her safe during outdoor time.
Read more about Pebbles
Due to her personality, Pebbles also needs a home with one docile, friendly male dog who won’t challenge her.
Pebbles is up to date on all vaccines and preventatives, has been microchipped, and will be spayed when age‑appropriate.
Pebbles is full of potential and joy — she just needs the right home to help her shine. If you’re looking for a clever, lively companion with a whole lot of heart, Pebbles may be your perfect match.

14. Nessa
Puppy (5 months 18 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Giant Schnauzer / Mixed (medium coat)

Meet Nessa! We think she could be a mix of Lab or Great Dane and some sort of wiry-haired terrier, but whatever she is, her paws tell us she's going to be a great big beautiful girl. Good thing she's such a sweetheart who loves to learn. Nessa requests your treats and chin scratches and she can provide giant cuddles as payment!
Read more about Nessa
In her foster home, she's house trained, knows some basic commands like sit/down, and takes treats gently. She's learning to walk politely on a leash and sleeps well in her crate at night. She loves to chase the ball, but she hasn't yet gotten the hang of bringing it back. During the day, she's still learning that her crate can be her safe place because she loves to be with people. Having another dog in the home could help her feel more confident when her people leave the house.
Nessa is current on vaccines and microchipped.

15. Powerade
Young (3 years 9 months) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat)

Meet Powerade
Powerade is a 3-year-old yellow lab mix with the softest eyes and the sweetest soul. He might start off a little shy, but give him a minute (and maybe a treat), and suddenly you’ve got a full-blown Velcro dog who thinks your personal space is a myth.
Read more about Powerade
Pow may have had a rough start, judging by some of his scars - but he’s well on his way to a happier life! His luck began to change one cold, December day when he ran into the Food Lion on Alamance Church Rd in Greensboro, seeking warmth and help. GCAS Animal Control picked him up and brought him to the shelter, even allowing him to ride shotgun on the way there! After some time at GCAS he began to show signs of stress and was able to go to foster.
While in foster, we’ve learned that this guy is the total package:
- House trained
- Crate trained
- Walks nicely on leash
- Knows “sit” (especially if snacks are involved)
- Treat and toy motivated (fetch = his love language)
Once he warms up, Powerade is goofy, playful, and so affectionate. He loves a good game of fetch just as much as he loves melting into you for snuggles. He will follow you room to room just to make sure he’s not missing out (can we say FOMO?)
Pow does have a couple of endearing quirks:
Occasionally jumps up when he’s excited, but redirects beautifully into a sit
Can be a little “mouthy” in an affectionate, playful way—he uses his mouth to explore the world, and responds well to gentle correction
Powerade would thrive in a home that understands his sensitive side:
Has done well with kids as young as 3, but due to his size and occasional jumping up would likely do best with older kids or adults
No cats or small animals (that retriever instinct is strong)
Could potentially live with another dog with very slow, thoughtful introductions, but may also be happiest as your one-and-only. He has done well with other dogs in public spaces and frequently “buddy walks” with friends in the neighborhood.
Health note: Powerade previously tested heartworm positive while at the shelter, but now has a negative test!
What makes Powerade truly special is his heart. This boy has been through a lot, but you’d never know it by how deeply he loves. He is trusting, loyal, and endlessly affectionate—a certified good boy who just wants someone to belong to.
If you’re looking for a sweet, snuggly shadow with a playful streak and a heart of gold… Powerade might just be your perfect match.

16. Hank
Adult (5 years 2 months) · Male · Beagle / Basset Hound / Mixed (short coat)

Hank is a 5‑year‑old beagle mix with a heart as sweet as they come. Despite a very difficult start to life, he has held onto his gentle nature and his love for people. His past left him with permanent scarring from having his mouth cruelly tethered shut, but Hank’s spirit is remarkably intact — he greets kindness with trust, warmth, and quiet gratitude.
Read more about Hank
When he entered rescue, Hank needed extensive dental care and tested positive for heartworm. He is receiving all necessary treatment, and he will complete every step before leaving foster care. Through it all, he has remained patient, affectionate, and eager to be close to the humans who show him compassion.
Hank gets along wonderfully with other dogs and enjoys their company. His calm, friendly demeanor makes him an easy companion, whether he’s relaxing at your feet or exploring the yard with a canine friend.
This brave boy is ready for a home where he can finally experience the safety, comfort, and love he’s always deserved. If you’re looking for a deeply sweet, resilient dog who will reward your kindness with unwavering loyalty, Hank may be the perfect match.
As a beagle, Hank requires a securely fenced yard with physical fencing attached to the home. He has been neutered, microchipped, and is fully vaccinated.

24. Joey
Young (1 year 3 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Pomeranian / Mixed (long coat)

Up in the sky! Look! It's a Pomeranian! It's a Chihuahua! It's Joey! Joey is a year old, eight pound, long-haired Chi-pom mix, and his energetic personality matches this medley of furballs.
Joey was found as a stray in a cage with 6 or 7 other similar-looking dogs. He is not used to living indoors with humans, but he is slowly becoming confident. He has learned a lot in the meantime: to settle in his crate, to take walks on a leash, and to play with his toys independently.
Read more about Joey
Joey loves chasing dragonflies and army-crawling in tall grass. He loves sprinting in the yard and chewing on collagen sticks and yak cheese. He especially loves his snuffle mat!
There are a few quirks about Joey that will take patience from his future humans. Although he has learned to toilet outdoors, he hasn’t quite gotten over some handling issues. Fear and excitement cause him to have little accidents. Thankfully, he is very small and has gotten used to wearing a belly band. Joey also needs to be closely watched as he enjoys jumping from high places and will need to be discouraged from parkouring. But hey, that means he might be great for an agility course!
Joey is young and acts like a puppy, so obedience training is a must. He should not be in a home with children younger than 10. He enjoys sprinting outside and would be best in a home with a big, physically-fenced yard.

Adopting a dog in Randolph County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
