1. Amber

Adult (1 year 5 months) · Female · Chihuahua · 6 mi from Lockbourne

Meet Amber! This little gem is nearly perfect. Amber is exceptionally smart, and willing to please her caretaker. After a week in foster care, she has almost mastered going potty outside, with only a few BM accidents near the potty pad. After just a few days, she is doing well with sit, stay, and come. Her foster mom thinks she would make a great agility dog. She's very athletic, but also likes to lay near her person for cuddle time. Amber gets along well with other dogs, and cats. She's friendly with people, but when tested with small children, she hid behind her foster mom but didn't snap or growl. We suspect she had never seen children before. Don't pass up this wonderful little girl.

She has not been kid or cat tested, but feel she would be fine with proper introductions. This girl is fun loving and ready to bounce her way into her new family's hearts and home!

I am Arlo! I came to DASH when my owner could no longer care for me. I am a young handsome boy, who loves everyone. I enjoy hanging out with the other doggies in my foster home and being wherever my foster mom is. I enjoy sleeping in bed with her as well and walks are one of my favorite things to do. I love giving affection and getting it in return. I am mostly potty trained, as long as I am kept on a schedule, but I also wear belly bands when I am going to be home alone for a while. I am working on being in a crate, I am not really a big fan yet, so my new family will have to keep helping me with that. I have not been around cats and I think I would love kids. 7. Pip

Puppy (8 months) · Male · Chihuahua · 6 mi from Lockbourne

Welcome Pip to DASH! Pip came to DASH with his brother, Squeak from a rural shelter in Kentucky. This little guy is super sweet and loves all of the dogs in his current foster home. He is a little shy when he meets new people, but warms up very quickly. He is working on his crate training, walking on a leash and potty training, which he is doing really well with. He can be a little bit of a barker (typical chihuahua guard dog! ) so apartment living may not be the best fit for him. He is also small and will not get much bigger, so small kids under 8 would also not be the best for him. Older kids would be ok with proper introductions. He has been around cats, and doesn't seem to like them much. This little guy is ready to start his forever chapter with his new person or family.

12. Marley P

11 Months · Male · Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed · 6 mi from Lockbourne

Stop and say hello to Marley P! This super sweet doodle boy came to DASH when his owners health no longer allowed them to care for a puppy with his energy. He was found by the original owners tied to a pole on a country road when he was a very young puppy. They were determined that he not be abandoned again so into the rescue he came! He is still very much a puppy, loves to play fetch with his favorite balls and tries to get all the other doggies in his foster home to play as well. He is working on his crate training, he is not a fan and will whine and bark, so he is not crated regularly in his foster home.

He walks well on a leash and is potty trained. He loves everyone he has met including the fosters grandkids who range in age from 6-9. He may not be great with really small kids just due to his enthusiasm and still learning what personal space is. He has also been around cats, and while he doesn't hurt them, he does think they want to play and so proper introductions would be best. He also loves to sleep in bed with his foster and needs to be touching his person. 13. Waylon Jennings FTA

Young (1 year 4 months) · Male · Plott Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 6 mi from Lockbourne

Introducing Waylon Jennings! This young guy came to DASH from a rural shelter in Kentucky when he was on the short list for euthanasia for overcrowding. He's a big boy and very energetic, so he will need a very active person or family who is willing to make sure he gets the exercise he needs so that when it's time to relax that he'll be ready. He is very friendly with all of the people and dogs he has met so far, but his play style is a little rough so a bigger dog sibling would be the best fit for him (no little dogs). The same goes for kids, he would do best in a home with older kids who he can't knock down when he's wanting to play.

He is currently in our DASH Prison Program where he is learning basic commands and working on his crate training (will sometimes bark when left alone) and walking on a leash. He is housebroken in the prison setting. He is very affectionate and goofy and thinks he's a lap dog. This boy needs adventure and a forever family dedicated to helping him to continue to become the best companion he can be. (FTA: Waylon Jennings is a part of our Foster-to-Adopt program. 15. Shy

4 Years 2 Months · Female · Chihuahua · 6 mi from Lockbourne

Meet Shy! Shy is a tiny sweet little white Chihuahua with a big personality that continues to blossom more and more every day! Coming from a hoarding situation where she had very little positive human interaction, Shy has made incredible progress in learning what it means to simply be a happy, loved dog. Once an extremely frightened little girl, Shy has transformed into a playful, curious, and energetic companion. She has an almost puppy-like enthusiasm for life and loves chasing toys, playing with her foster dog siblings, and following her people around the house. She wants to be involved in everything and is constantly discovering new things she enjoys! One of Shy’s biggest accomplishments has been learning to enjoy affection.

Read more about Shy

She now happily accepts pets when you’re sitting down and she can approach you on her own terms. She loves coming over for treats and food and genuinely enjoys being near her people. However, she’s still figuring out how she feels about being approached, touched unexpectedly, or picked up. When someone approaches her, Shy will often scamper away, sometimes almost as though she’s turned it into a little game! While she can still be skittish, her reactions often seem to be a combination of playfulness, uncertainty, and simply not knowing what to expect. When she’s sleepy and relaxed, she’s much more accepting of being approached or picked up. She’s making progress, but physical affection and handling are still things she needs to explore at her own pace. Patience will be especially important for Shy’s future family. She will likely need a very long adjustment period in a new home, and her adopters must be willing to give her the time and space to build trust without expecting immediate affection. Even though she’s made wonderful progress in foster care, moving into an unfamiliar environment with new people will be a big change for her. Her future family should understand that building a bond with Shy will be a gradual process, and that’s perfectly okay! Shy can do well with either men or women and would especially benefit from a home with friendly small to medium-sized dogs but has been around large dogs. Having other dogs around has played a huge role in helping her gain confidence, learn routines, and discover how much fun life can be. Shy is still working on house training. She does have occasional accidents but makes an effort to use pee pads and does best with a consistent outdoor potty schedule. A securely fenced yard would be ideal, as she is not yet leash trained. Shy may not be the dog who immediately curls up in your lap or asks to be held, but she has so much love, happiness, and personality waiting to be discovered. She’s a silly, playful little girl who wants to connect with people but is still learning how. Her perfect family won’t measure her progress by how quickly she allows herself to be held or cuddled. Instead, they’ll celebrate the little moments: the first time she approaches for pets, the day she chooses to stay beside them, or the moment she realizes she can completely relax in their presence.

Meet Lambchop! This adorable pup has a big personality and a wonderful mix of playful energy and lap-loving sweetness. A companion dog isn’t required, provided he has people who have plenty of time for play, attention, and puppy adventures. Lambchop is making great progress with housetraining and signals when he needs to go outside.

Read more about Lambchop Tuscarawas

His new family should continue a consistent potty routine and expect occasional accidents as he learns. He currently eats three meals a day and is always enthusiastic about treats! Leash walking is still a work in progress. Some days he’s eager to try, while other days he prefers backyard fetch. A securely fenced physical yard is required so he has a safe place to run and play while he builds confidence on walks. Loud noises can make him unsure, so his new family should focus on this area with patience and understanding. A calm, supportive home that can gently help him build confidence and feel secure will be the best fit for Lambchop. Lambchop has no known medical issues. His ideal family will embrace his puppy energy and provide daily exercise, positive-reinforcement training, and plenty of love as he grows. If your idea of a great day includes backyard games, puppy antics, and a tired little dog curled up in your lap, Lambchop might be your perfect match! How to adopt from Colony Cats (& dogs)

We have an application that requires the potential adopter to wait until their application can be verified. Once everything checks out the adopter comes and picks up their new fur member of the family and signs a contract. One of the highlights of our contract states that if for ANY reason at ANY time they cannot care for the animal, they must return the cat or dog back to Colony Cats (& dogs). Our adoption fees are $125 for kittens 6 months and younger; $75 for kittens over 6 months and adults up to 7 years; $50 for 7 years and older. If adopting 2 kittens/cats at the same time there is a $25 discount. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, Feline Leukemia and FIV tested (cats), heartworm tested (dogs), microchip, flea prevention, vaccinations (FVRCP for cats and DHLPP for dogs), rabies vaccine (if kittens or puppies are old enough to receive a rabies vaccine). If not, the new owner will need to go to their vet to get this done.

Adopting a dog in Lockbourne

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
