Read more about Mai Mai

Mai Mai is a delightful 6-year-old female Japanese Chin weighing 14 pounds. She is a gentle, sweet girl with a charming personality who gets along wonderfully with other dogs.

True to her breed, Mai Mai has some endearing and unique quirks! She does the classic Japanese Chin "chin wave," happily waving her front paws to greet you or get your attention. She is also meticulously tidy and loves to groom herself just like a cat.

Mai Mai is searching for a loving home with a securely fenced yard, as she is not yet leash-trained and needs a safe outdoor space to explore at her own pace. She would thrive in a patient household that can help her continue to build confidence and learn new routines.

If you are looking for a tender, loving companion to add warmth and joy to your home, Mai Mai is ready to win your heart!

Please contact h2hadoptions@gmail.com directly to inquire about adopting Mai Mai. There is an application process and an adoption fee.

WE REQUIRE AN ALL-ADULT HOME WITH A SECURELY FENCED YARD. The secure fence must be attached to the home, 4 feet or higher with gaps with no larger than 2.5 inches. An invisible fence, enclosed patio or terrace without grass, temporary fencing, dog pens or dog lots or community shared fencing (dog park) are NOT considered secure fencing. If your fencing has "puppy pickets" (or is supplemented with garden fencing) it needs to be at least 36 inches high from the ground up AT THE LOWEST POINT. No exceptions.

2. Chip

Adult (4 years) · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (long coat) · 36 mi from Danville

IMPORTANT Hart-2-Heart Rescue, Greensboro, North Carolina only posts our adoptable dogs on Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet. Once you email us we will email you questions and our adoption application. Please do not complete an application for any of our dogs on a pet adoption platform, as we only accept applications submitted on the application we sent you.

-----------

Read more about Chip

Chip is an adorable 4-year-old Yorkie mix weighing 9 pounds. His coarse coat is low maintenance and low to no shed.

Chip is an active, athletic terrier who loves toys and is good at entertaining himself. He would make a great companion for someone who enjoys walking or is interested in clicker training. Like most terriers, he'll bark when there's something worth announcing, and he is undeterred by his tiny size.

Chip is initially unsure when he meets new people, but learned quickly to trust his foster mom and other women. He is slower to trust men, so his adopter will need to be patient and allow him time to adjust at his pace.

Because Chip is quick and can dart through open doors, his new family must be vigilant around exterior doorways.

The ideal home for Chip would be with someone who has experience going slow and moving at Chip’s pace and wants to bond with a dog through training and enrichment activities.
Chip has made great progress with house training in his foster home, and needs a patient person to continue his routine and training.

Chip will do best as an only dog; however, he has learned to co-exist peacefully in his foster home.

Please email h2hadoptions@gmail.com directly. There is an application process and a $500 adoption fee.

WE REQUIRE AN ALL-ADULT HOME WITH A SECURELY FENCED YARD. The secure fence must be attached to the home, 4 feet or higher with gaps with no larger than 1.25 inches. 3. Chase

Adult (6 years 2 months) · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie · 36 mi from Danville

IMPORTANT NOTE: We ONLY post our dogs on Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet! If you see Hart-2-Heart dogs on ANY OTHER platform, it is likely a SCAM - DO NOT submit an application on that platform!

-----------

The adoption range for this dog is limited to NC, SC, VA, northern GA, DC area, southern MD and east TN. If you are interested in adopting this dog, you MUST contact h2hadoptions@gmail.com directly. There is an application process and adoption fee.

-----------

Chase is a fun-sized 5lb Yorkie who is 6 years old. He is a great cuddler and the perfect lap buddy.

Read more about Chase

Chase can be shy when you first meet him. He came to us as a breeder-release dog, having never lived in a home as someone’s beloved pet. Many dogs like this have never been on a leash or set foot on grass to potty. Chase was a little reserved in the beginning, but since adjusting to his foster family, he has really come to life.

Chase is smart and curious. He’s always smiling and gets excited when you talk or play chase with him. He loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. We require his adoptive home to have another small social dog under 12lbs so he can continue to watch and learn from another dog in the home.

Chase is still learning house-training and leash walking, so he will need someone with time and patience to help him be successful. We require an all-adult home with a small, securely fenced yard. The fenced yard is not so he can be left alone, but to help with house-training, since most pups do not want someone hovering over them when trying to potty. Chase is trying to learn how to use stairs, so we prefer a home with limited to no stairs.

There is an application process and adoption fee.

4. Powerade

Young (3 years 9 months) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 42 mi from Danville

Meet Powerade

Powerade is a 3-year-old yellow lab mix with the softest eyes and the sweetest soul. He might start off a little shy, but give him a minute (and maybe a treat), and suddenly you’ve got a full-blown Velcro dog who thinks your personal space is a myth.

Read more about Powerade

Pow may have had a rough start, judging by some of his scars - but he’s well on his way to a happier life! His luck began to change one cold, December day when he ran into the Food Lion on Alamance Church Rd in Greensboro, seeking warmth and help. GCAS Animal Control picked him up and brought him to the shelter, even allowing him to ride shotgun on the way there! After some time at GCAS he began to show signs of stress and was able to go to foster.

While in foster, we’ve learned that this guy is the total package:
- House trained
- Crate trained
- Walks nicely on leash
- Knows “sit” (especially if snacks are involved)
- Treat and toy motivated (fetch = his love language)

Once he warms up, Powerade is goofy, playful, and so affectionate. He loves a good game of fetch just as much as he loves melting into you for snuggles. He will follow you room to room just to make sure he’s not missing out (can we say FOMO?)

Pow does have a couple of endearing quirks:

Occasionally jumps up when he’s excited, but redirects beautifully into a sit

Can be a little “mouthy” in an affectionate, playful way—he uses his mouth to explore the world, and responds well to gentle correction

Powerade would thrive in a home that understands his sensitive side:

Has done well with kids as young as 3, but due to his size and occasional jumping up would likely do best with older kids or adults

No cats or small animals (that retriever instinct is strong)

Could potentially live with another dog with very slow, thoughtful introductions, but may also be happiest as your one-and-only. He has done well with other dogs in public spaces and frequently “buddy walks” with friends in the neighborhood.

Health note: Powerade previously tested heartworm positive while at the shelter, but now has a negative test!

What makes Powerade truly special is his heart. This boy has been through a lot, but you’d never know it by how deeply he loves. He is trusting, loyal, and endlessly affectionate—a certified good boy who just wants someone to belong to.

If you’re looking for a sweet, snuggly shadow with a playful streak and a heart of gold… Powerade might just be your perfect match.

5. Polly

Adult (4 years 3 months) · Female · Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 42 mi from Danville

From Polly’s Foster -

Polly has settled in beautifully and has been an absolute sweetheart! She loves belly rubs and is happiest when she’s curled up or sitting right beside her person. She’s incredibly affectionate and never misses an opportunity to hand out plenty of kisses.

She’s fully crate trained and happily puts herself to bed in her crate each night. Polly has only barked a couple of times over the past week, and both were simply to let us know someone was at the door.

Read more about Polly

She walks nicely on a leash with very little pulling and is highly food and treat motivated, always taking treats gently. She loves her toys, especially a good game of fetch!

Polly already knows several commands, including sit, shake, come, down, kiss, walk, no, and crate.

She would thrive as the only pet in the home. While she is non-reactive to dogs and cats when on a leash, she is not a fan of living with cats. Polly also loves the water! She enjoys swimming and has even gone paddle boating with a previous foster.

Her ideal home would have older children or teenagers and a securely fenced yard where she can run, play, and enjoy life to the fullest.

6. Oggie

Young (2 years 1 month) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed (medium coat) · 42 mi from Danville

Meet Oggie!

Applicant:
Oggie

Age:
2 years young

Build:
Big, athletic & professionally clumsy

Special Skills:
Master toy dissector, professional car-ride enthusiast & Olympic-level cuddler!

Oggie is a big, goofy Shepherd/Boxer/Lab mix who earned his name because, well… he’s a little bit of an ogre! But don’t let his size fool you—inside this big body is pure honey-colored sweetness.

Oggie is the
ultimate leaner
. He’ll glue his big body to your legs for chest scratches, then happily plop down for belly rubs. He loves his people, loves attention, and would happily spend his days as your oversized shadow.

Read more about Oggie

And this handsome guy is already a certified good boy! Oggie is
fully house- and crate-trained
and knows his basic commands, including
sit, shake, down and crate
. He’s also a huge fan of car rides and can turn just about any toy into a fun dissection project!

Oggie is a social butterfly and
loves other dogs
. If he spots a potential dog friend, though, his recall can mysteriously disappear! He can also get a little
mouthy when he’s excited
, so because he is a strong, enthusiastic boy who sometimes forgets just how big he is, he needs an
experienced big-dog adopter

7. Maddison

Adult (3 years) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 42 mi from Danville

Meet “Madi,” a beautiful dog who is looking for a family to call her own! After suffering a terrible injury last year, Madi bravely underwent a leg amputation. She has adapted beautifully as a tripod and doesn’t let it slow her down!

She enjoys going for walks and loves going for rides in the car. She likes toys and will happily entertain herself with them before curling up on a comfy bed or a cozy lap for a nap.

Read more about Maddison

While she has so much love to give, she will need a patient and understanding family who can help her continue building confidence. New environments and unfamiliar situations can make her nervous, and she is sometimes reactive when seeing people through a barrier like a window or gate. She would be happiest in a calm home without young children. Because she is uneasy around other animals, she would do best as the only dog in the home, where she can feel safe and secure without added stress. Madi is not a fan of cats and should be in a cat-free home.

8. Moe

Adult (1 year 6 months) · Male · Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 42 mi from Danville

Meet Moe!

❤️

Hi! My name is

Moe

, and I’m the sweetest, goofiest boy you’ll ever meet! At just

1 year old

, I’m still a puppy with lots of love, energy, and personality to share.

Right now, I’m in need of a foster or forever family. If I don’t find one soon, I’ll have to go into boarding. That would make me incredibly sad because my favorite place is right by my people. I’m hoping someone will open their heart and home to me!

Here’s a little about me:

I LOVE to play! Tug, fetch, rope toys—you name it! I’ll even bring you my favorite rope toy to let you know it’s playtime.

Read more about Moe

I’m a handsome guy with beautiful reddish-fawn coloring, stunning eyes, and the cutest ears you’ve ever seen.

I sleep quietly in my crate at night and settle nicely when tethered in the house. I even enjoy relaxing to soothing music! I’d make a great work-from-home buddy, but I’m also comfortable being crated when you need to leave.

I’m not reactive on walks around dogs, cars, strollers, or other distractions. I can be a little strong on leash at first, but I settle down as the walk continues, especially in quieter environments.

I’d love a fenced yard or an active family because playing and exploring are some of my favorite things!

I’m dog-friendly and enjoy having playful canine companions who like to romp as much as I do.

I’m affectionate, lovable, and convinced I’m the perfect lap dog—all 55 pounds of me!

Sometimes I get so excited to see my people that I jump up to say hello. I’m still learning that four paws on the floor is the best way to greet people, so I’d do best with older children while I work on my manners.

I’m a smart boy who loves treats, wants to please, and enjoys learning. With a little guidance and consistency, I’ll make an amazing companion.

I’m just looking for a family who will love me, help me continue learning, and let me be the happy puppy I’m meant to be.

Can you foster or adopt me so I don’t have to go to boarding?

9. Echo

Adult (2 years 8 months) · Female · Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 42 mi from Danville

Echo is a 2-year old, 44 lb bundle of sweetness, silliness & personality. She’s spayed, up to date with her shots, and ready to find a home that will love her playful spirit & help her continue to grow.

Echo is equal parts affectionate companion & goofy entertainer. She’ll keep you smiling with her little antics-like proudly ‘borrowing’ a sneaker from the front door & carrying it into the living room like she’s just won a prize (don’t worry she’s more about the fun than the destruction if you catch her in time!).

Read more about Echo

She’s currently in foster with two resident dogs who are older, and while kind & tolerant, are not quite able to keep up with her youthful energy & antics.

What makes her special:

- Crate trained & sleeps through the night

- Potty trained & will signal when she’s ready to go out

- Finds comfort in her crate for naps & downtime

- Food motivated (she loves treats, which makes training fun & effective)

- Can entertain herself with Kongs & durable chews

- Sweet, affectionate, and enjoys being close to her people

- Loves relaxing outdoors-especially perched on outdoor furniture like she owns it

What’s she’s still working on:

- Pulls on leash and would benefit from continued leash training

- Gets excited & may jump up when greeting you

- Still learning not to counter surf

- Not gentle with soft toys-she prefers the tough stuff

Echo is a smart, loving dog who thrives with a bit of structure & consistency. She’s already got a great foundation & with continued guidance will make an incredible loyal & fun companion.

Her ideal home:

Someone who will embrace her playful nature, committed to helping her continued learning and give her guidance & affection. She’ll do best with someone patient, engaged & ready for a dog with personality.

12. Prius

Adult (1 year 5 months) · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 50 mi from Danville

Prius came from the same area of the county as another dog we recently took in who was named after a car so logically we felt we needed to keep the theme going! Prius has had no leash walking experience and refill has probably been kept on a tie out because he loves walking in circles running around and around the human who is taking care of him. As much as we would love for him to go back to a family, we hope it will be a better situation if he is reclined. He is active, and we really are in a quandary about what his possible breed mix could be. Best guess is something active and one that will need lots of directed activity. If you’re looking for fun, trainable, and a dog that’s alert and wants to play, consider Prius if he is not reclaimed.

13. Leo

Adult (2 years) · Male · Bichon Frise / Mixed (long coat) · 50 mi from Danville

Leo arrived as a stray, wearing a collar, and sporting a microchip. Unfortunately, the registration is not updated and we have not been able to reach his registered owner. We will dig a little deeper and contact the facility that inserted his microchip to see if we can find out where mom might be.

Leo appears to be house trained, but he is not neutered, snd he does like to lift his leg to mark.

Read more about Leo

although it appears he’s been recently groomed, his tummy fur is stained with the appearance of a belly band being used to control his marking. At 3 1/2 years old, even with a neuter which is required by Virginia code for all adoptions, it is possible he will always be a marker, and they never learn not to pee inappropriately. We feel this is an important note for a prospective adapter to know upfront. Although he is adorable, when humans reach for him, he can be nippy and skittish, so we feel a home with no children will be best as he could easily be in a skate artist and takeoff running again. The microchip information lists him as a bichon frise mix. He was recently trimmed or clipped, but we don’t know if his family did it or if it was a professional groomer. We have no way of knowing where his origin might be, but we know he would like to get home!

Young (8 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat) · 50 mi from Danville

Molly was brought to the shelter by her owner who said four dogs was too many. We think there must’ve been a little more to it than that since she is eight months old and on the shy side, but we never know what’s going on at peoples homes before dogs come to us. She is not an outgoing dog, but is receptive when people love her and encourage her to try new things. Working on house training is always a project for us, but in her case we’re also working on confidence and teaching her that leash walking is a good thing!

17. Saint

Adult (6 years) · Male · Hound / Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 50 mi from Danville

Saint is feeling so much better now that he has been treated for an infection of unknown origin, and allowed to move around at his own pace. He appears to be a boxer/ hound mix, who arrived in our care already neutered, and under very sad circumstances. He had been abandoned by his former owner in the woods in the neighboring county. It’s sad that the shelter is only 2 miles from the home where he originated, yet he ended up all on his own in the woods. At some point, he ended up with injury to his side, and that is what we have been treating. The good news is that after 10 days of treatment, he is well on his way to being healed. He even has a Foster who wind up to take him in in just a couple more days. Saint is beautifully house trained, fine with other dogs, and fine with cats. He has been updated with vaccines and heartworm testing!

18. Arabella

Adult (3 years) · Female · Hound / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 50 mi from Danville

From her foster mom: "The name her family gave her is Bella. Because we have had so many dogs with this name at the shelter, her shelter name is Arabella. But those of you who have known me for a while know why she is Bella at our house. Around here we think that name is very special. She was brought to the shelter because her mom was having medical issues and could not care for her. Between her name and knowing that "there but for the grace of God go I".... I wanted to bring her home to foster. I am hoping that this news will give her mom comfort. At the shelter, Bella was very sweet and loving. But also very quiet. Since she has been with us, she has reminded me that she is only 3 years old. She is funny and playful. She likes toys and chew bones. And while she is fine with my two small seniors, this new side of her shows me that she would probably love to be in a home with another sweet, playful dog more her size. I can just see her chasing around the backyard with a good buddy. She is crate trained and house trained. She sleeps all night in her crate without a peep. She also has good kitchen manners. She is watchful but not obnoxious. And no counter surfing. Do you know anyone who is looking for a beautiful, sweet, loving, playful companion? If so please have them fill out a no obligation application so that a time can be set for a meeting."

19. Ox

Adult (1 year 6 months) · Male · Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat) · 50 mi from Danville

Ox, 1-1/2 years old and 55 pounds, is a gorgeous black-and-golden boy. Ox appears to have been well cared for before coming in as a stray. He gets a little burst of happy excitement when he first steps into the play yard, but once he stretches his legs, his gentle, easygoing nature shines right through. He is an absolute dream on the leash, walking softly by your side and leaning in for every head scratch and chin rub you’re willing to give. He has been well-mannered and loving—a Superstar on leash. Polite, gentle, and an absolute bliss to take on daily walks. He is low maintenance: Moderate energy and low grooming needs make him a wonderful fit for all types of homes—even first-time dog owners! He is eager to learn: Smart, attentive, and excited to master basic obedience alongside his new best friend. He is familiar with a crate.

20. Rico

Senior (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (medium coat) · 50 mi from Danville

Heartwarming and touching—senior dog Rico needed something to soften his bones, and sometimes a blanket just doesn’t do it. We are so grateful for the donation of this beautiful lavender fluffy bed today, just in time to share with Rico! Rico came to us with a unpleasant skin infection, lots of hair loss, infected eyes, and infected ears. He’s getting the works as far as medication, but we don’t want to stop there: we want to give him love and attention and anything else he might need to recover and be a glorious pet! He is around 40 pounds, neutered. housetrained, and fine with other dogs and cats. Is he the kind of dog that might fit beautifully in your home as a foster dog while we get his skin straightened out? We hope so! Please let us know if you would like to help us out by taking them in! His mom is having some medical issues and had to give him up so she could treat herself.

Adopting a dog in Danville

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
