3. Prius
Adult (1 year 5 months) · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Prius came from the same area of the county as another dog we recently took in who was named after a car so logically we felt we needed to keep the theme going! Prius has had no leash walking experience and refill has probably been kept on a tie out because he loves walking in circles running around and around the human who is taking care of him. As much as we would love for him to go back to a family, we hope it will be a better situation if he is reclined. He is active, and we really are in a quandary about what his possible breed mix could be. Best guess is something active and one that will need lots of directed activity. If you’re looking for fun, trainable, and a dog that’s alert and wants to play, consider Prius if he is not reclaimed.

4. Lily
Adult · Female · Bluetick Coonhound

Lily is a 4-year-old Bluetick Coonhound who is ready to find her forever home! She is already spayed and ready to start her next chapter. If you love hounds, Lilly might just be the girl for you! Come meet her and see if she is the perfect addition to your family! ❤️
5. Taz
Adult · Male · Chihuahua

Taz is in foster care! His foster wrote a bio describing him: Taz is part cuddle-bug and part energizer bunny. Some of his favorite things are playing fetch, going on walks (or runs!), getting belly rubs, and cuddling with his humans. He has bursts of high energy but also enjoys long naps in sunspots. He would do well as an only dog! He also likes playing with other small dogs, but he can play hard and rough and has a tendency to steal toys and beds, so that would need to be managed. Taz is super affectionate. He wants to love and be loved and craves lots of attention. He will stay close to your side and remind you if you forget to pet him.
Read more about Taz
He doesn’t like being home alone for too long—he’d rather be with you! Someone who works remote/hybrid or is retired may be a great fit. Taz is doing awesome with house training and doesn’t have accidents when on a regular schedule. He walks great on a leash and learns new things very quickly.
6. Gizmo
Adult · Male · Husky / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed

Get ready to meet Gizmo, a 2-year-old FUN BOY who is one seriously cool dude! This handsome guy is possibly a Husky/German Shepherd mix (our best guess!), and he’s ready to find a family to call his own. At 40 lbs he's a great size! Gizmo came to a shelter after his previous owners welcomed a new puppy and decided that three dogs were just too many. Now, this awesome boy is hoping someone will give him the second chance he deserves! Gizmo has lived with other dogs and kids, so he has some experience being part of a family! We’re not sure how he feels about cats just yet, so that would be something to explore. This fun-loving dude has so much life ahead of him, and all he needs is someone willing to give him a chance. Could Gizmo be the missing piece to your family?
7. Leo
Adult (2 years) · Male · Bichon Frise / Mixed (long coat)

Leo arrived as a stray, wearing a collar, and sporting a microchip. Unfortunately, the registration is not updated and we have not been able to reach his registered owner. We will dig a little deeper and contact the facility that inserted his microchip to see if we can find out where mom might be.
Leo appears to be house trained, but he is not neutered, snd he does like to lift his leg to mark.
Read more about Leo
although it appears he’s been recently groomed, his tummy fur is stained with the appearance of a belly band being used to control his marking. At 3 1/2 years old, even with a neuter which is required by Virginia code for all adoptions, it is possible he will always be a marker, and they never learn not to pee inappropriately. We feel this is an important note for a prospective adapter to know upfront. Although he is adorable, when humans reach for him, he can be nippy and skittish, so we feel a home with no children will be best as he could easily be in a skate artist and takeoff running again. The microchip information lists him as a bichon frise mix. He was recently trimmed or clipped, but we don’t know if his family did it or if it was a professional groomer. We have no way of knowing where his origin might be, but we know he would like to get home!

9. Molly
Young (8 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat)

Molly was brought to the shelter by her owner who said four dogs was too many. We think there must’ve been a little more to it than that since she is eight months old and on the shy side, but we never know what’s going on at peoples homes before dogs come to us. She is not an outgoing dog, but is receptive when people love her and encourage her to try new things. Working on house training is always a project for us, but in her case we’re also working on confidence and teaching her that leash walking is a good thing!

10. Dollar
Young · Male · Pit Bull Terrier

Meet Dollar! He's a ten month old boy who has spent the majority of his short life in the shelter system. He's been really fortunate to first have been in the Amherst shelter with their kind folks and three times a week visits to Camp Merricks to play, and now waiting with us for his forever family to find him! Dollar is good with other dogs and enjoys playing. He has suffered some shelter stress that resulted in him chewing his tail. He's getting better and his tail is healing. Dollar is a pretty chill guy. He is gentle and sweet. He can be a little timid in new situations, but warms up with the a bit of encouragement and patience.

He has been to events and was a little shy, but warmed up as he realized people wanted to love on him. He's wears a sharp tuxedo coat and has a handsome smile. At only 35 lbs. he's a great size too! Stop in and meet Dollar and maybe take home your BEST friend!
11. Tia
Young · Female · Pit Bull Terrier

This pretty girl is Tia! She lived with three other dogs. When all four dogs got out and brought to Amherst Animal Control, their owner surrendered all but one, understanding four dogs was just too much. We snatched Tia up when we had some empty rooms so we could help them with their overcrowded shelter. Tia has a beautiful black & white coat and a distinguished blue eye making her easy to identify. Tia walks nicely on a leash and was wonderful when she recently attended the Overland Expo event at Oak Ridge Estate. She is learning basic commands, but still has some learning to do. Tia is only 1 year old & has plenty of time to learn new commands to be the best dog she can be in her future.

She's a nice size at 48 pounds. Tia is dog friendly. She spent a couple days at Camp Merricks and had no issues with play groups with all kinds of dogs. At the shelter, she seemed like she wanted to be friends with the cats. If you have cats we can spend more time cat testing her. Come meet this beautiful, sweet, girl! She's sure to be a perfect family friend.

12. Linus
Adult (1 year 7 months) · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat)

When Linus first arrived, he wasn’t sure about us. It took a few days to earn his trust, but now? He’s outgoing, friendly, and playful. He’s learned the routine and is eager to play with the other dogs — they’ve been a huge comfort to him. We love working with dogs who show us what helps them, and Linus is thriving with canine friends. Not bad for being with us for only 7 days! >PLEASE NOTE: This pet has been posted by Friends of Campbell County Animal Control, Rustburg, VA. Loretta has declared that she is ready to find a home! Her heartworm positive status has been rectified, after two very manageable treatments at a vet office, and she is scheduled to be spayed, and happy to be in her foster home with other active hounds and beagles. Loretta is five years old, house trained, and has decided that couch potato fits her just fine! This beautiful girl has been waiting for months to be heartworm free so that a family would be happy to consider her for their next adventure dog companion. She loves children, does absolutely fine with cats, and as far as size: perfect. Not too big not too small. Please let Loretta come into your heart the way she comes into ours! 14. Saint
Adult (6 years) · Male · Hound / Boxer / Mixed (short coat)

Saint is feeling so much better now that he has been treated for an infection of unknown origin, and allowed to move around at his own pace. He appears to be a boxer/ hound mix, who arrived in our care already neutered, and under very sad circumstances. He had been abandoned by his former owner in the woods in the neighboring county. It’s sad that the shelter is only 2 miles from the home where he originated, yet he ended up all on his own in the woods. At some point, he ended up with injury to his side, and that is what we have been treating. The good news is that after 10 days of treatment, he is well on his way to being healed. He even has a Foster who wind up to take him in in just a couple more days. Saint is beautifully house trained, fine with other dogs, and fine with cats. He has been updated with vaccines and heartworm testing!

15. Arabella
Adult (3 years) · Female · Hound / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

From her foster mom: "The name her family gave her is Bella. Because we have had so many dogs with this name at the shelter, her shelter name is Arabella. But those of you who have known me for a while know why she is Bella at our house. Around here we think that name is very special. She was brought to the shelter because her mom was having medical issues and could not care for her. Between her name and knowing that "there but for the grace of God go I".... I wanted to bring her home to foster. I am hoping that this news will give her mom comfort. At the shelter, Bella was very sweet and loving. But also very quiet. Since she has been with us, she has reminded me that she is only 3 years old. She is funny and playful. She likes toys and chew bones. And while she is fine with my two small seniors, this new side of her shows me that she would probably love to be in a home with another sweet, playful dog more her size. I can just see her chasing around the backyard with a good buddy. She is crate trained and house trained. She sleeps all night in her crate without a peep. She also has good kitchen manners. She is watchful but not obnoxious. And no counter surfing. Do you know anyone who is looking for a beautiful, sweet, loving, playful companion? If so please have them fill out a no obligation application so that a time can be set for a meeting."

17. Ox
Adult (1 year 6 months) · Male · Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat)

Ox, 1-1/2 years old and 55 pounds, is a gorgeous black-and-golden boy. Ox appears to have been well cared for before coming in as a stray. He gets a little burst of happy excitement when he first steps into the play yard, but once he stretches his legs, his gentle, easygoing nature shines right through. He is an absolute dream on the leash, walking softly by your side and leaning in for every head scratch and chin rub you’re willing to give. He has been well-mannered and loving—a Superstar on leash. Polite, gentle, and an absolute bliss to take on daily walks. He is low maintenance: Moderate energy and low grooming needs make him a wonderful fit for all types of homes—even first-time dog owners! He is eager to learn: Smart, attentive, and excited to master basic obedience alongside his new best friend. He is familiar with a crate.

18. Rico
Senior (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (medium coat)

Heartwarming and touching—senior dog Rico needed something to soften his bones, and sometimes a blanket just doesn’t do it. We are so grateful for the donation of this beautiful lavender fluffy bed today, just in time to share with Rico! Rico came to us with a unpleasant skin infection, lots of hair loss, infected eyes, and infected ears. He’s getting the works as far as medication, but we don’t want to stop there: we want to give him love and attention and anything else he might need to recover and be a glorious pet! He is around 40 pounds, neutered. housetrained, and fine with other dogs and cats. Is he the kind of dog that might fit beautifully in your home as a foster dog while we get his skin straightened out? We hope so! Please let us know if you would like to help us out by taking them in! His mom is having some medical issues and had to give him up so she could treat herself.

20. Claire
Adult (6 years 2 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat)

Claire is one of our favorites!
Read more about Claire
Following her stray hold, we took her to the vet to get her checked out, and discovered she was not only heartworm positive, but also positive for two tickborne diseases, and had horrible ear infections in both of her ears. This girl must have been in such misery, and yet she maintained her good attitude, her playfulness, and wanted everyone to pay attention to her. Claire is about six years old, (best guess), and is spayed, as we can see her green tattoo from the Spay/Neuter Clinic showing clearly on her belly when she flops to the grass, rolls over, and asks for belly rubs! This girl is amazing, smart, (does a great sit!) and housetrained. She is surely missed by her family! We have discovered Claire has no patience with many dogs, and is going to be very selective about who she lives with. She is fabulous with toddlers and children, but needs no other animals in her home. She is heartworm positive and is being treated for them via the "slowkill" heartworm treatment method. She also has badly inflamed ears, due to chronic ear infections and we are helping her find great relief from that pain, too. We know there’s a home for her somewhere! Apply to adopt and let’s get her into a home!

21. Biscuit
Adult (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat)

Biscuit arrived as a stray, healthy and social, but without leash-walking skills, and we had hoped he would be home by now! He appears to be housetrained, and he loves having humans around to show him attention. He has learned that the only way to get outside for fun and exercise is to wait patiently for a volunteer to come to his kennel run with a leash in hand so he can enjoy not only human presence, but also enjoy the landscape and smells all around. We think that Biscuit will be a fun companion, and are enjoying getting to know him.

23. Emma
Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Update: it’s hard to imagine all that this little dog has gone through in her short lifespan, but being abandoned, hit by a car, then left for dead for two weeks without anyone looking for her has given her the right to be distrustful of the human race. And yet newly renamed “Emma” Has nothing but love and licks for the humans who are caring for her, seeing her through not only two surgeries, but extensive medical care following those surgeries. Emma has such a story she could tell us, but she prefers to look ahead rather than back, and remains optimistic that she will heal completely and find a wonderful home. (Emma suffered broken bones and at the end of August received FHO surgery on her left leg, and a rod and pins placed in her right leg during extensive surgery in Charlottesville at Virginia Veterinary Specialists. follow up surgery was done just a couple weeks later because one of the pin placements was irritating her incision.) We feel she is now on the road to full recovery, although she now faces weekly rehab appointments to help her regain strength in her legs. Emma has been cared for by our community, including a volunteer who drives her to Virginia Vet for her appointments. There, a local Vet Hospital, who adore her, and foster families who are willing to give up their time to see her through her daily requirements. Emma weighs under 50 pounds, is house trained, Gets along with every dog she has met, and feels cats are just an extension of her own family. She has been gentle at every corner of her journey, grateful for everything being done for her, and willing to do whatever is asked of her. It’s been a rough road for her. But we want to see her through it. Let us know if you would like to be part of her family, and make her an extension of yours.

LITTLE DOG has declared that she wants a new name! Her foster dad felt she wants to be called Emma, and be the namesake of the young woman who cared for her while she was at Altavista during her initial two week medical care time. We think it fits her beautifully, and she responds well to it! So everyone, put aside her Little Dog name and let us introduce Emma to you! Emma is about a year-old, and after being hit by a car and totally ignored for what the vet guessed was one to two weeks before treatment was found for her, surgery has been done, and she is now a happy, healthy girl recovering beautifully.

25. Panda
Adult · Male · Great Pyrenees / Pointer / Mixed

Panda is a Great Pyrenees/Pointer mix (we are guessing!) weighing around 80 pounds. He is stressed in the shelter environment and doesn’t show well in his kennel, so anyone interested in meeting him should plan to meet him outdoors.Panda walks very well on a leash and does not pull. He also enjoys having his belly rubbed! He can play roughly with other dogs, so he may do best with a dog who is comfortable with a more rowdy play style. A proper introduction would be important.Panda is having a hard time adjusting to shelter life, and we hope to find him a home where he can settle in and show more of his personality. If you’re interested in meeting Panda, please ask to spend some time with him outside!
26. Clint
Adult (2 years) · Male · Beagle (short coat)

Clint came in as a stray and he is not a fan of being at the shelter. He's very afraid of all the strange sounds and barking. Plus, he's not figured out that volunteers are his friends. We have no doubt he'll come around with lots of gentle attention. He's already made it outside which is a huge step forward.

30. Wiley
Adult (2 years 1 month) · Male · Shepherd / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat)

GIANT EAR ALERT! Here is what happens when your floppy ears get excited about people wanting to spend time with you! Wiley loves stretching his long legs, chasing toys, and hanging out in the playyard. He has been very interested in meeting other dogs, although he’s not had an opportunity to interact with an yet. He loves chasing the ball, bringing it back, running and jumping and just being a regular goofball. Volunteers think he’s pretty cool and we think you will too! He recently had a day at a volunteer's bome and did wonderful. Not one mess, snuggled with her roommate and respected the gate boundaries even though he could jump them if he wanted. He completely relaxed and was the perfect guest.
