Meet Hooch- if you like hounds, you'll love this guy! Hooch was a stray here in Highland Co near the WV line. He is currently fostering with Dulcie and Dewey, whom he loves to play with! Hooch gains his confidence from other dogs. He is warming up to people, but we suspect he didn't have the best start. He is fairly quiet, is house/crate trained, and gets along with male and female dogs. He has not been cat tested. Hooch is 3y old and 60 lbs. 4. Dewey

Adult (3 years 11 months) · Male · Bluetick Coonhound (short coat)

re you a survivor who understands rebuilding trust? A quiet soul who doesn't need a dog to greet many visitors? A compassionate empath with a strong desire to assist those most in need? Or someone willing to help a frightened dog learn he's truly safe? Dewey might be looking for you.

In October 2025, Dewey and his brother Huey were abandoned after hours at the Pocahontas County Animal Shelter in Marlinton, WV. Both arrived terrified—Dewey especially carried deep fear. At the vet, an old crushed eye socket injury was discovered, suspected to be from abuse.

Read more about Dewey

For seven months, Dewey lived in a kennel in absolute terror: cowering, pacing, tail tucked. By early 2026, he began declining further. With no other placement available and facing probable euthanasia, I brought Dewey home to foster in early June 2026. The goal was simple: give him as much time as he needed to decompress then evaluate and take it from there.

Everything challenged him at first. A twig snapping on walks spooked him. A sudden movement, sneeze, or cough made him freeze. Even a moved laundry basket registered as a threat.

Despite his fears, Dewey has made great progress:
• He is house-trained (ZERO accidents!)
• He is crate-trained
• He has tolerated vet visits well (including blood draw, nail trims, ear exam, anal gland check)
• He’s an excellent passenger in a vehicle
• He loves sniffing woodlands during walks, and engaging his nose melts away fear

DOGS: Gets along well with other dogs. A confident foster sibling has helped him learn safety through example.

CATS: Has crossed paths with a couple of cats and shown zero interest so likely ok around kitties. (Check out his cow and duck reaction videos!)

KIDS: Still nervous around children (and unfamiliar adults). Has tolerated them but is not ready for daily interaction.

Dewey’s ideal home would be one with:
• No children currently
• A patient couple or individual ready to continue socialization after gaining his trust
• A confident dog companion he can learn from
• Understanding that gaining his trust won’t be without challenges but will be a deeply rewarding, meaningful experience

Dewey is now ready for the next chapter of his healing journey. He deserves a second chance and a loving home of his own. If you are the special person he's been waiting for, contact the Highland County Humane Society in Monterey, VA.

5. Diamond

Young (2 years 5 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat)

Diamond loves all people. She’s been in a foster home with a baby and was sweet and gentle. She loves meeting new people and is personable and happy in all social settings. She also likes dogs and has great dog skills. We use her to test new dogs at the kennel because her doggy skills are so good. She does fine with females and males alike. She has met cats and reacted indifferently, although I’m unsure if she ever lived with cats.

Diamond was an unclaimed stray from Buckingham County. She is roughly 2-3 years old, spayed, microchipped, and fully vetted. About 37 lbs.

She loves going for walks but needs an easy-walk harness as she pulls a bit when excited. She loves car rides and rides nicely. Her best quality is her sweet and gentle nature. Her worst habit is jumping up when excited. She’s crate trained and doesn’t have separation anxiety :)

7. Dulcie-

Young (2 years 1 month) · Female · Coonhound / Mixed (short coat)

Howdy ya’ll! I’m Dulcie (pronounced Dull-see), otherwise known as the sweetest lil’ Southern thang this side of the Miss-is-sip! I’m so affectionate my foster mama says I’m a borderline pest because of it. I know she don’t really mean it, tho. She loves the dickens out of me! She says I’m a unique cross ‘tween a Southern Belle and a backwoods country gal. I have the poise and beauty of a Belle but also love to get down and dirty! Found a pile of cow poop? Let’s roll, baby! I seem to do well and enjoy going for rides, so we can cruise those back mountain roads in your 4x4 together with the windows down. You drive, I’ll sniff! When I channel my inner Scarlet O’Hare, I'm mostly a fine young lady who minds her tongue (except when I get mad and frankly don’t give a damn and say so—but that doesn’t happen too often—I really only get mad at my foster brother sometimes and have to tell him off). So, I haven’t been very vocal thus far and mama says that’s a good thing ‘cause it’ll make it easier for someone who has neighbors nearby to adopt me.

Read more about Dulcie-

I like other dogs and enjoy a hearty play session or three a day but, even being the young whippersnapper I am, I am not bounce off the wall high energy. Mama says I can call myself crate trained because I put myself in a crate when I feel like chillin’ and when she goes away, she shuts the crate door and comes back later to find that I was a good girl while she was gone. I kind of like to hang out around mama so come in and go in a crate fairly often, unlike my foster brother who will stay outside until them cows comes home (and he don’t even roll in poop; what’s up with that?!) I’ve not had any potty accidents inside either since I got here! However, there is some red, white and blue Rebel in my blood; to this I must confess. My naughty claim to fame is that I like to pilfer soft things...like dirty laundry, blankets, and rolls of toilet paper (and holy moly do I have fun makin’ a mess with those things, yee haw!!!). Maybe one of these days it’ll make mama break out some more soft plushie toys for me -n- Dewey. One can never have too many toys, I always sez. I’ve heard of these things called cats but I don’t know as if I’ve ever seen one myself to have an opinion of them. I guess that’s about it about me except that mama says she thinks I might be a good starter hound. I had to ask her what that meant and she said basically, because hounds aren’t for everyone, and I seem to be such a good and easy one, that even folks with no prior hound experience can likely handle my little speckled butt because I’m such a love bug and seem eager to please (unless there’s toilet paper involved). So if I sound like the almost perfect, not quite an angel, lovely, charming and fun girl you’ve been looking for contact the Highland County Humane Society in Monterey, VA and plan us a meet-n-greet date; I’d love to make your acquaintance (and scope out your house for toilet paper---oops, maybe I shouldn’t say that part)!! Come take me home on some country roads; you won’t be disappointed!
