3. Dash and Bijou

Senior · Male · Bichon Frise / Chihuahua / Mixed (long coat) · 29 mi from Elmwood Park

About Me:

Name: Bijou and Dash

Breed (or best guess): Chi/Jack Russel and Bichon/Chi

Approximate Age: 13 yr and 10 yr

Gender: Female and Male

Approximate Weight: 14 lb and 16 lb

Adoption Fee: $600 for both dogs adopted together

Requirements: Patient family willing to adopt a bonded pair

Why In Rescue: Owner went into a nursing home

Profile:

Read more about Dash and Bijou

Bijou and Dash came in as a bonded pair when their owner went into a nursing home. They do take some time to warm up to new people but do well together. They were housetrained in their home, but may need a little retraining in a new home after being in the shelter. These dogs deserve a home to live out their senior years, and we are hoping to be able to keep them together. Bijou is Dash's mother, so they have been together for many years. They have been updated on vet care including dentals, so now they just need a home.

We do put the needs of the dog's first, so it is nothing personal if we determine a particular dog isn't suitable for your specific home and living situation.

If interested in adoption, the first step is filling out the pre-adoption application at http://www.bichonrescues.com/pre-adoption-form-dog If link isn't clickable, please copy/paste or visit http://www.bichonrescues.com. Please note, filling out inquiry forms on Petfinder or Adoptapet and/or their application forms does not constitute an application for one of our dogs. Priority in responding to inquires and applications is always to the applications filled out on our website, time constraints limit the number of other inquires we can reply to.

We do our best to evaluate the dogs while they are with us, but they sometimes act different in the shelter environment than they do in a home. Many times we do not know the actual breed/mix or age of the dog, in that case we use our best guess as to breed and age.

We are located in Mukwonago, WI. Adopters must come to us, we do not ship our dogs. Please do not apply for a dog until you are ready to adopt. Once an application is approved you will be notified by email to make an appointment to meet the dog. All dogs are seen by appointment only.

The adoption fee through Bichon and Little Buddies Rescue is $495 for most adults and up to $650 for puppies which includes Wi State Sales Tax. Included in this fee is your new companion who will be spayed/neutered, have a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (as required by state law), current on age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm tested (if old enough) and started on preventative, microchipped, and given a general wormer. Other medical needs will also have been taken care of, such as dentals and treating ear infections.

To assist you and your new pet in adjusting to life together, you may chose to take an 8 week age appropriate obedience training course at For Pet's Sake Dog Training in Mukwonago, WI for $100 (up to $260 value). You may opt to take Puppy Kindergarten, Adult Beginners, or Small Dogs Big Hearts. You must register for the class within 90 days of adoption for the reduced fee. Read more about Moss

Hi everyone. My name is Rascal but it used to be Moss. I think Rascal fits me better. I’m a very happy boy with lots of puppy energy, very friendly. I love doing zoomies in my yard and playing with my little foster sister Muffin. Once I get all my zoomies out, I love to cuddle up on the sofa. I need lots of yummy food to keep my energy up - my foster mom says that I’m a very good eater! I am working on my potty training and I know to walk to the door to ask to go out. Once I’m outside I sometimes get distracted if the family of wild turkeys are walking across my yard. There are 9, I counted them but didn’t bark.

When you look at my picture, you might think it’s AI generated. It’s really me, I’m really that cute.

You might ask what I’m looking for in my forever family. I need a family who is kind, loving, and patient. A furry sibling a little older than me would be perfect, a playmate for times when you’re busy. Do you have a big fenced in back yard so I can run? That sure would be fun. I like lots of toys - my currency favorite are ones to chew.

I know to sit for a treat but still learning to walk on a leash. My foster mom says that I’m really smart and learn quickly.

Do you think that you could live a little fella like me?

Hoping to be your new best friend.

Love, Rascal

These litter of pups came from another rescue so they can find loving homes. Acorn, Birch, and Moss are the boys, and Fern and Thistle are girls. We do put the needs of the dog's first, so it is nothing personal if we determine a particular dog isn't suitable for your specific home and living situation. They haven't lived in a home yet, so will need to learn things like housetraining, but they are up to date on their vet care including vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip, and started on heartworm preventative. Apply now and we will set up appointments for you to meet the available pups.

11. Linden

Adult · Male · Poodle (Miniature) · 29 mi from Elmwood Park

About Me:

Name: Linden

Breed (or best guess): Poodle

Approximate Age: 4 years

Gender: Male

Approximate Weight: 10 lb

Adoption Fee: $495

Requirements: patient family, another small dog and fenced potty area

Why In Rescue: puppy mill survivor

Read more about Linden

Profile: Linden is back up for adoption after getting adopted and being returned after a couple weeks. He really loved his female adopter, and wanted her all to his own. This is something that can be worked with, and may lessen as he is sure he has a home. He does seem to bond with females more quickly than males. He was affectionate with the female adopter, and ignored the others in the home. He was a cuddly boy when in bed with his humans. The adopters also felt he would do best with another dog in the home.

Linden came from a commercial breeder/puppy farmer who was no longer going to use him for breeding. He came to us very scared but he is starting to open up and is learning how to play and be a dog. He is starting to trust humans, but we haven't worked on leash walking yet. He can learn to be a loving pet, but it will take time and patience. If interested in him, please fill out the pre-adoption application on our website. Linden is currently wearing doggy boots as he will pace around his kennel and make his pads sore. We are working on getting them healed and toughened up, until then he looks cute in boots.

Dogs from commercial breeders are generally undersocialized (often very scared/shy/skittish) and probably never lived in a house. They will need to learn things like how to walk on a leash, go up stairs, and what things like a television are. They need a patient adopter who will give them the time they need to adjust and to learn to trust people. Every baby step forward needs to be celebrated, and the dog needs to be accepted for who they are at each step. Some dogs can adjust quickly and learn how to be a loved pet pretty easily. Others can take a long time to even be comfortable with things like walking through the house and being in the same room as a person. No matter how far and how fast the breeder dogs progress, they are wonderful dogs and deserve a great home after their life on the puppy farm. A fence or at least a secure fenced in potty area is highly recommended for the dog's safety, and may be required for some dogs. Another small dog in the house can also help many former breeders adjust faster to life in a home, and also may be required in some cases. We do put the needs of the dog's first, so it is nothing personal if we determine a particular dog isn't suitable for your specific home and living situation.

She's already made wonderful progress with her potty training in just a week!Maeve would thrive with an active person or family who can provide plenty of exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation. She would especially love a playful canine companion with a similar energy level, as she may be a bit overwhelming for smaller or senior dogs. Maeve also prefers having company and doesn't enjoy being left alone, so a home where someone is around often would be ideal.Maeve was surrendered when her previous elderly owner experienced health issues. She's ready for a fresh start with a family who can keep up with her playful spirit, give her lots of love, and include her in all of life's adventures. 18. Wally

Puppy · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 31 mi from Elmwood Park

Meet Wally, a handsome 4-month-old Lab mix who is just beginning to discover what it means to be a dog! Wally had a tough start in life, coming from a hoarding situation where he lived with 40 other dogs. He’s still learning about the world around him and will need a patient, loving family to help him build confidence and feel safe.Despite his fears, Wally is an affectionate, playful boy who loves attention. He is crate trained and working on his potty training and puppy manners with both people and other dogs. He is food motivated, although he can be a little particular about his treats! The outside world can be scary for Wally right now.

Read more about Wally

He is very fearful of leaving the house and often tries to pull back toward home. He can be hypervigilant outdoors, so he’ll need continued positive reinforcement, training, and plenty of time to learn that the world isn't such a scary place.Wally would do best in a home with a secure, fenced yard and another friendly dog who can be his playmate and help show him the ropes. Most importantly, he needs a family who understands that building trust takes time and is willing to celebrate the little victories along the way. Wally has so much potential, and with patience, consistency, and lots of love, he can grow into the confident, happy pup he deserves to be.Could you be the safe place Wally has been waiting for? • Animal House Shelter, Inc.Huntley, IL · 111 dogs · 48 mi from Elmwood Park
How to adopt from Animal House Shelter, Inc.

Animal House Shelter tries to keep the environment for the animals in our care, as healthy, stress free and comfortable as possible during their stay with us. Therefore, Walk-Through viewing of the dogs is NOT allowed at the shelter, due to the stress it creates. During your visit to the shelter, an adoption counselor will assist you through the adoption process and introduce you to as many dogs as you would like to meet, in order to make the best possible match for you, your family and your new pet. The cats are housed in a large ‘free roam’ cat room. They are able to socialize all day with each other, staff, volunteers and potential adopter. Like people, animals have distinct personalities that make them unique. At Animal House we are proud to say that these animals are treated like our own. We care enough to be certain they go to the right loving, forever home. 1. All adoption donations MUST be in cash, money order, traveler’s check , cashier’s check or by VISA, DISCOVER or MASTERCARD credit card only. NO PERSONAL CHECKS PLEASE. 2. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt. 3. All members of the household must be present, including any other dogs you may currently own, in order to do a final adoption (cats do not have to come to the shelter. We will cat test here because we know how stressful it is on the cats to be transported). 4. Dogs and cats that you currently own must be current on vaccinations and spayed/neutered prior to visiting the shelter or any adoption.

Adopting a dog in Elmwood Park

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
