1. Loco

Adult · Male · Dachshund / Mixed · 93 mi from La Crosse

This is Loco! He really doesn't even need a bio because his name says it all. He is full of energy and has so much love to give. He loves to be up on your lap and in your space. Loco doesn't mind the dogs here at the shelter but seems a little too interested in the cats. He would be an excellent family dog. We believe he is a long-haired dachshund! Loco is a clingy guy, so he would love a family that could give him a lot of attention! If you are interested in adopting Loco, please fill out an application at www.hspcwi.org/adopt. Loco is up to date on his vaccines, neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $300+ tax. If you are a resident of Portage County a dog license will be issued at the time of adoption!

2. Tortilla

Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed · 93 mi from La Crosse

This interesting looking girl is Tortilla. Lovingly named after her tortilla chip shaped ears. She could be in the running for the world record of "Smallest Ears on a Dog". We really don't know what breed she is, but she has the body of a boxer and the face of a greyhound. She is long, leggy, smooth, sleek, and looks great in a sweater. On top of her good looks, she has quite the personality. She loves to run, play and receive attention. Tortilla would be a great dog to take out on the trail to do some hiking or playing fetch in the back yard. When she is all done with that, she would like to fall asleep on the couch with a bunch of blankets.

Read more about Tortilla

Tortilla is 37lbs and ready to go home! She is a little nervous, so we don't recommend small children for her. She would do better with older children that are respectful of boundaries. She seems to do well with male dogs and does not seem to mind cats. Tortilla's adoption fee is $200 + tax. She is fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and heartworm negative. If you are interested in adopting this house noodle, you can fill out an application on our website!

3. Colt

Adult · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 93 mi from La Crosse

Coming in at a slim 90lbs, we are welcoming Colt to the adoptable dogs team! This man LOVES kisses. We are not sure what his breed is, but his attitude and demeanor scream labrador retriever. When he is feeling affectionate, he gently gives love nibbles. He also chatters his teeth together when he is sniffing something new or giving you a kiss on the face. He is full of personality and love and is ready to find his forever family. Colt seems to do well with other dogs and doesn't mind cats. He is quite a big boy, so Colt would do better with older, sturdier children so he does not knock them down.

4. Pepper

Adult · Male · Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed · 93 mi from La Crosse

Introducing Pepper! Pepper is a chill little guy who just wants to snuggle up in your lap. He is a Bichon/Poodle mix. He is about 30-40 pounds and 9 years old. He definitely got the poodle length and the bichon height out of the mix. He is quite the low rider! His only home requirement is love and affection. He really isn't picky as long as there is someone around to lavish him with attention. Pepper is on a special urinary diet due to frequent UTIs, and a few meds. All of these help keep him happy and healthy. As long as he is on his special food, he is UTI free! He can be a nervous dude, so he enjoys wearing his thunder jacket to keep him feeling secure.

Read more about Pepper

He seems to do well with low energy dogs, and cats as well. He doesn't seem to mind children, but due to him being a little nervous, he may need an older child who knows how to interact with animals! Pepper will come with all of his "safety blanket" items. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative! His adoption fee is $150 + tax. If you live in Portage County, a license will be issued at the time of adoption! If you are interested in meeting Pepper, please fill out an application for him on our website at www.hspcwi.org/adopt. Pepper is looking forward to snuggling up on the couch with you!

5. Sprout

Puppy (1 month 23 days) · Female · Hound / Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 89 mi from La Crosse

Sprout (female) is 1 of 9 puppies born at the shelter on September 8th to mother dog Lenore, who appears to be a hound mix. We do not know the father's identity, but we're wondering if the puppies could be mixed with lab or golden retriever, just going by the appearances of some of them. We do expect these puppies to be fairly large dogs at maturity. Sprout will be ready for a new home around the middle of November, after she has had her 2nd of 3 distemper/parvo vaccinations. Her basic vet work will be scheduled with her adopter and must be done WITH one of our vet partners. This includes her 3rd distemper/parvo vaccination, and, when she is old enough, her rabies shot and spay surgery. All of this is covered by us under the adoption fee of $150.

Read more about Sprout

Puppies require a whole lot of time, patience, and training. They are looking for secure, committed homes, ready to keep them for the entirety of their lives. It's not always an easy journey. Sprout and her siblings should do well with other dogs, and they are all young enough to learn to interact appropriately with cats. Very young children might not be suitable as the pups develop manners and learn not to nip and chew. They need homes in which they won't be alone for long hours.

NOTE: Adoptions are done via private appointment once an application has been completed and approved. Applications must be submitted at our website, mchs.rescuegroups.org.

We are located at 101 22nd St. SE in Austin, right next to the airport. It's exit 180B off of I-90, right off of 218 South.

We do require that potential adopters be at least 21 years old and that any resident dogs be up to date on vaccinations, heartworm testing/preventatives, and spayed or neutered.

14. Winifred

Puppy · Female · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed · 93 mi from La Crosse

We still have puppies! These two girls are looking for their forever home! If you are looking for a spunky companion who will give you endless joy and also make you question your life choices, you have come to the right place. These guys are full of energy and antics. The bad news; these guys need training. They are going to be higher energy dogs, and they are babies still. They do not know a whole lot of anything, and it will be like bringing a toddler with shark teeth into your home! They WILL steal your socks, they WILL think your hands, toes and whatever skin is showing is a chew toy, and they WILL think it's funny when you get mad at them for not being good citizens.

Read more about Winifred

The good news; they are so cute, smart, and will make you laugh. Puppy zoomies: HILAROUS. Bringing you stuff that they shouldn't have in their mouth: SOMEWHAT FUNNY. Playing with their toys appropriately: RARE OCCURANCE, but appreciated, nonetheless. They should be relatively easy to train, and puppies are great at learning. They are not so good at remembering, so they will need reminders! We are not sure how big they will get, but they should stay relatively small. They look like heeler/terrier mixes, but only a DNA test could tell. These girls have had their appropriate puppy vaccinations and are microchipped. Their adoption fee is $300. A portion of their adoption fee will be returned after they are spayed. The surgery will be done at HSPC at no cost to the adopter! If you are interested in meeting/adopting one of the puppies, please fill out a dog adoption application on our website www.hspcwi.org. The approved adopters will be notified for an appointment and will be able to choose a puppy best fitting for their home during their visit. We cannot hold puppies, so get your applications in to meet these little land shark equivalents!

15. Blue

Senior · Male · Australian Shepherd · 93 mi from La Crosse

This is Blue. Blue is an Australian Shepherd by day, and his brother Presley's emotional support by night. And by night we mean that is his full-time job! Blue is about 8 years old, and the total package. He is sweet, laid back, well behaved, potty trained and loves everyone. Blue is on a special hepatic diet and a liver supplement. Lately, Blue has completely refused to eat his special diet, so we switched him over to regular food. Ideally, he would be eating the diet that keeps him healthy, but the stress of the shelter is getting to him. Being everyone's favorite is hard! He is too busy raising morale in the building to worry about his own health.

Read more about Blue

He is rebelling against the work load he gave himself by requesting a different food each meal. In a lower stress environment, we are hopeful that Blue can get back on the correct diet to help him live his best life. As mentioned before, Blue has a full-time position as Presley's emotional support. Presley has requested that Blue keeps his job so they will need to go to a home together. Blue is really only looking for someone to pet his butt and let him sit right on top of them. They may do well with teenagers or older respectful children. Blue and Presley's adoption fee will be $100 for the pair. Blue is neutered, current on vaccines, micro chipped and heart worm negative. If you are interested in meeting/adopting Blue and Presley please submit a dog application on our website www.hspcwi.org. The approved adopter will be contacted within three business days for an appointment to meet him. If all goes well, Blue and Presley can go home the same day. All dog adoptions come with a leash, collar, toys and 3 days of food. The adopter is given copies of all medical records. If the adopter is a resident of Portage County a dog license will be issued at the time of adoption.

16. Presley

Adult · Male · Siberian Husky / Mixed · 93 mi from La Crosse

Meet Presley! Presley is a 63lb husky mix. He is a quiet, polite, and respectful boy. He loves to give a sassy side eye and will make hanging out with him alone a very awkward experience. Honestly, Presley just has a staring problem. If you catch him staring, he will look away like he wasn't just silently judging you. Presley NEEDS to go home with his brother Blue. Blue makes hanging out with Presley a little less awkward. Presley knows his basic commands and will do them when you have a treat in your hand. If you do not, he will judge you with his weirdly round eyes until you get one. He may even throw a little silent bark in there to add some extra treat-getting encouragement.

Read more about Presley

He can be shy at first, but he comes out of his shell when he is with Blue (and with treats). Presley and Blue keep each other busy and out of your hair when you are trying to have time to yourself. You will have to listen to them play though, because they want you to watch them wrestle instead of the tv series you've been binging. They are the best of friends and cannot be separated. They may do well with teenagers or older children who understand boundaries. Presley is approximately 3 years old. Blue and Presley's adoption fee will be $100 for the pair. Presley is neutered, current on vaccines, micro chipped and heart worm negative. If you are interested in meeting/adopting Blue and Presley please submit a dog application on our website www.hspcwi.org. The approved adopter will be contacted within three business days for an appointment to meet him. If all goes well, Blue and Presley can go home the same day. Bringing a dog home to your cat

Tell the rescue about your cat: their age and how they react to dogs. A dog who has lived calmly with one cat may still want to chase a cat that runs.

Introduce them slowly. Keep them apart for the first few days and swap bedding so they get used to each other's scent, then let them meet with the dog on a leash, rewarding calm behavior.

Make sure the cat can always get somewhere the dog can't reach, like a high shelf or a room behind a baby gate, and keep the litter box and cat food out of the dog's way.
