1. Loco

Adult · Male · Dachshund / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

This is Loco! He really doesn't even need a bio because his name says it all. He is full of energy and has so much love to give. He loves to be up on your lap and in your space. Loco doesn't mind the dogs here at the shelter but seems a little too interested in the cats. He would be an excellent family dog. We believe he is a long-haired dachshund! Loco is a clingy guy, so he would love a family that could give him a lot of attention! If you are interested in adopting Loco, please fill out an application at www.hspcwi.org/adopt. Loco is up to date on his vaccines, neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $300+ tax. 2. Tortilla

Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

This interesting looking girl is Tortilla. Lovingly named after her tortilla chip shaped ears. She could be in the running for the world record of "Smallest Ears on a Dog". We really don't know what breed she is, but she has the body of a boxer and the face of a greyhound. She is long, leggy, smooth, sleek, and looks great in a sweater. On top of her good looks, she has quite the personality. She loves to run, play and receive attention. Tortilla would be a great dog to take out on the trail to do some hiking or playing fetch in the back yard. When she is all done with that, she would like to fall asleep on the couch with a bunch of blankets.

Read more about Tortilla

Tortilla is 37lbs and ready to go home! She is a little nervous, so we don't recommend small children for her. She would do better with older children that are respectful of boundaries. She seems to do well with male dogs and does not seem to mind cats. Tortilla's adoption fee is $200 + tax. She is fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and heartworm negative. 3. Wednesday

Adult · Female · Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

It is the perfect time of year to bring a little black dog named Wednesday home! She has the sweetest little face and a unique crooked smile that makes it look like she has pulled a sneaky little prank on you and is waiting for you to find out. When she comes up to greet you, her whole body wags with her tail. Just like the real Wednesday, she prefers to not have to share with others. Wednesday won't go after dogs, but she does not like them up in her business. Cats are an absolute no-go for her. She would love nothing more but to chase them! She would like to have a home with no other siblings.

Read more about Wednesday

She seems to do well with children and would not mind having someone to play with! Wednesday is approximately 40lbs and could stand to lose a few! We can't blame her for that; it's tough to stay away from the treats this time of year! We are not sure what her breed is, but she seems to be a black lab/terrier mix since she is on the smaller side! Wednesday is up to date on her shots, spayed, microchipped, and heartworm negative. Her adoption fee is $100 + tax. If you live in Portage County, a dog license will be issued at the time of adoption! Hurry and scoop this pocket-sized gal up!

4. Colt

Adult · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

Coming in at a slim 90lbs, we are welcoming Colt to the adoptable dogs team! This man LOVES kisses. We are not sure what his breed is, but his attitude and demeanor scream labrador retriever. When he is feeling affectionate, he gently gives love nibbles. He also chatters his teeth together when he is sniffing something new or giving you a kiss on the face. He is full of personality and love and is ready to find his forever family. Colt seems to do well with other dogs and doesn't mind cats. He is quite a big boy, so Colt would do better with older, sturdier children so he does not knock them down.

5. Pepper

Adult · Male · Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

Introducing Pepper! Pepper is a chill little guy who just wants to snuggle up in your lap. He is a Bichon/Poodle mix. He is about 30-40 pounds and 9 years old. He definitely got the poodle length and the bichon height out of the mix. He is quite the low rider! His only home requirement is love and affection. He really isn't picky as long as there is someone around to lavish him with attention. Pepper is on a special urinary diet due to frequent UTIs, and a few meds. All of these help keep him happy and healthy. As long as he is on his special food, he is UTI free! He can be a nervous dude, so he enjoys wearing his thunder jacket to keep him feeling secure.

Read more about Pepper

He seems to do well with low energy dogs, and cats as well. He doesn't seem to mind children, but due to him being a little nervous, he may need an older child who knows how to interact with animals! Pepper will come with all of his "safety blanket" items. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative! His adoption fee is $150 + tax. If you live in Portage County, a license will be issued at the time of adoption! 6. Winifred

Puppy · Female · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

We still have puppies! These two girls are looking for their forever home! If you are looking for a spunky companion who will give you endless joy and also make you question your life choices, you have come to the right place. These guys are full of energy and antics. The bad news; these guys need training. They are going to be higher energy dogs, and they are babies still. They do not know a whole lot of anything, and it will be like bringing a toddler with shark teeth into your home! They WILL steal your socks, they WILL think your hands, toes and whatever skin is showing is a chew toy, and they WILL think it's funny when you get mad at them for not being good citizens.

Read more about Winifred

The good news; they are so cute, smart, and will make you laugh. Puppy zoomies: HILAROUS. Bringing you stuff that they shouldn't have in their mouth: SOMEWHAT FUNNY. Playing with their toys appropriately: RARE OCCURANCE, but appreciated, nonetheless. They should be relatively easy to train, and puppies are great at learning. They are not so good at remembering, so they will need reminders! We are not sure how big they will get, but they should stay relatively small. They look like heeler/terrier mixes, but only a DNA test could tell. These girls have had their appropriate puppy vaccinations and are microchipped. Their adoption fee is $300. A portion of their adoption fee will be returned after they are spayed. The surgery will be done at HSPC at no cost to the adopter! If you are interested in meeting/adopting one of the puppies, please fill out a dog adoption application on our website www.hspcwi.org. The approved adopters will be notified for an appointment and will be able to choose a puppy best fitting for their home during their visit. We cannot hold puppies, so get your applications in to meet these little land shark equivalents!

7. Blue

Senior · Male · Australian Shepherd · 19 mi from Nekoosa

This is Blue. Blue is an Australian Shepherd by day, and his brother Presley's emotional support by night. And by night we mean that is his full-time job! Blue is about 8 years old, and the total package. He is sweet, laid back, well behaved, potty trained and loves everyone. Blue is on a special hepatic diet and a liver supplement. Lately, Blue has completely refused to eat his special diet, so we switched him over to regular food. Ideally, he would be eating the diet that keeps him healthy, but the stress of the shelter is getting to him. Being everyone's favorite is hard! He is too busy raising morale in the building to worry about his own health.

Read more about Blue

He is rebelling against the work load he gave himself by requesting a different food each meal. In a lower stress environment, we are hopeful that Blue can get back on the correct diet to help him live his best life. As mentioned before, Blue has a full-time position as Presley's emotional support. Presley has requested that Blue keeps his job so they will need to go to a home together. Blue is really only looking for someone to pet his butt and let him sit right on top of them. They may do well with teenagers or older respectful children. Blue and Presley's adoption fee will be $100 for the pair. Blue is neutered, current on vaccines, micro chipped and heart worm negative. If you are interested in meeting/adopting Blue and Presley please submit a dog application on our website www.hspcwi.org. The approved adopter will be contacted within three business days for an appointment to meet him. If all goes well, Blue and Presley can go home the same day. All dog adoptions come with a leash, collar, toys and 3 days of food. The adopter is given copies of all medical records. If the adopter is a resident of Portage County a dog license will be issued at the time of adoption.

8. Presley

Adult · Male · Siberian Husky / Mixed · 19 mi from Nekoosa

Meet Presley! Presley is a 63lb husky mix. He is a quiet, polite, and respectful boy. He loves to give a sassy side eye and will make hanging out with him alone a very awkward experience. Honestly, Presley just has a staring problem. If you catch him staring, he will look away like he wasn't just silently judging you. Presley NEEDS to go home with his brother Blue. Blue makes hanging out with Presley a little less awkward. Presley knows his basic commands and will do them when you have a treat in your hand. If you do not, he will judge you with his weirdly round eyes until you get one. He may even throw a little silent bark in there to add some extra treat-getting encouragement.

Read more about Presley

He can be shy at first, but he comes out of his shell when he is with Blue (and with treats). Presley and Blue keep each other busy and out of your hair when you are trying to have time to yourself. You will have to listen to them play though, because they want you to watch them wrestle instead of the tv series you've been binging. They are the best of friends and cannot be separated. They may do well with teenagers or older children who understand boundaries. Presley is approximately 3 years old. Blue and Presley's adoption fee will be $100 for the pair. Presley is neutered, current on vaccines, micro chipped and heart worm negative. If you are interested in meeting/adopting Blue and Presley please submit a dog application on our website www.hspcwi.org. 9. Aleida

Puppy (3 months 21 days) · Female · Belgian Shepherd Malinois · 34 mi from Nekoosa

Aleida is a 15 week old, female Malinois puppy (DOB 7/5/2026). She is a very sweet girl who loves to be petted. She does well with other dogs, respecting them when she is told they aren't interested in her and happy to play when invited. Aleida is learning to come when she is called and other obedience. She sleeps well in her crate overnight and tries hard to be potty trained (has had just one accident so far) and will go to the door when she needs to go out. Aleida has to energy, food and toy drive to be a fun obedience, scent work or other sport dog, but would be a wonderful pet in an active home too. 10. Ruthie

Female · Siberian Husky / Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed · 34 mi from Nekoosa

COURTESY POST - This dog will not be adopted through ABMR - Please contact owner (information at bottom of this bio)

Ruthie
is an amazing dog. She's super sweet and smart and we love her. She loves to play fetch at the dog park (watching her run is amazing!) or even in the living room with her favorite toy. She loves long walks and is great on a leash. She is totally housebroken and doesn't have accidents or destroy stuff in the house. She's an excellent watchdog and guards us from everything ;-)

Read more about Ruthie

We adopted
Ruthie
from the Chicago Anti-Cruelty Society 3 years ago as a tiny puppy, one of 12 in a litter left under a bridge. Our youngest dog has been bugging
Ruthie
for fun and play, which she loves for a while -- but eventually she asserts herself as alpha and has bitten her dog sibling a few times. She's had no problems with our other, more submissive dog. But since we also have little kids we're concerned.

Heartbroken, we know she'd be happier in a home without all our chaos -- other dogs, little kids, cats, etc. -- a solo dog with an active, loving family. Whoever adopts her will be very lucky indeed.

If interested in adopting Ruthie, please email Nell at

11. Nitro

Young (1 year) · Male · Belgian Shepherd Malinois · 34 mi from Nekoosa

Meet Nitro ~ A Young Pup Ready to Light that Fire in your Heart

True to his name, Nitro is an energetic puppy full of heart and unlimited potential. He is the total package.

Nitro is absolutely stunning. His striking good looks, expressive face, and athletic build turn heads wherever he goes. But it's his affectionate nature, loyal heart, and genuine desire to connect with his people that make him truly special.

Read more about Nitro

At under a year old, this incredibly handsome Belgian Malinois is everything you could hope for in a young dog. Friendly with people, social with other dogs, and deeply devoted to his person, Nitro is the kind of companion who wants to be part of everything you do.

Still very much a puppy, Nitro is a happy guy who approaches life with enthusiasm and curiosity. Not unusual for his breed, Nitro shows his excitement with playful “clacking”. Whether he's chasing a ball, proudly carrying around his favorite Kong toy, or transforming an ordinary plastic water bottle into the greatest treasure on earth, Nitro knows how to make every day an adventure.

Nitro is also a smart young dog with an excellent foundation already in place. He:

Walks nicely on leash
Knows sit and down
Is house-trained
Is crate-trained
Is highly food-motivated and eager to learn
Does well at daycare

With his intelligence, work ethic, and love of rewards, Nitro is the perfect age to continue building skills and deepening the bond with his future family.

Nitro is expected to remain on the smaller side for a male Belgian Malinois, making him a wonderful choice for someone looking for all the incredible qualities of the breed in a slightly more compact package.

One story that perfectly captures Nitro's confidence and adventurous nature happened during his very first boat ride. While many dogs might hesitate in a brand-new environment, Nitro hopped aboard like he'd been doing it his entire life and loved every minute of the experience. His willingness to embrace new adventures suggests he'll be an enthusiastic partner wherever life takes you—whether that's hiking trails, training fields, road trips, or simply spending time together.

Nitro is currently located in Ohio and is searching for a family that appreciates the intelligence, athleticism, and loyalty that make Belgian Malinois such extraordinary dogs. And willing to put in the time and effort to channel that brilliance and drive towards good. He is a young dog with enormous potential, ready for someone willing to invest in his future and enjoy the incredible journey of watching him grow.

If you're looking for a devoted companion, a training partner, an adventure buddy, and a best friend all wrapped into one handsome package, don’t miss out on this opportunity to adopt Nitro.

Adopting a dog in Nekoosa

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
