Canelo

Young (9 months) · Male · Chihuahua (short coat)

Animal Information: Canelo is a 7lb, 6-month-old Chihuahua mix who came to Animal Control after being surrendered from a home with too many dogs. He ended up at the Stanislaus Animal Shelter and was at risk due to space.

One look at that squishy little face and we knew we had to get him out of there!

We're excited to welcome this sweet little guy to the PNW and help him find the family he deserves. We can't wait to meet him!

Foster Profile:

You can’t help but smile when you look at this little guy! He has great character and supplies endless entertainment!

Canelo has been enjoying life in foster care and is a really good puppy. He is young and has some 'puppy' habits, but he is maturing before my eyes. He has not been the least bit destructive and is very content chewing on appropriate toys. His favorite lap is his foster dads, and he has been camping with us and is doing great at the campsites. He was meant to be a PNW doggo!

Like most young dogs, Canelo can be very “busy”. He is great at self-entertaining whether chewing on a bone, shaking a stuffy, or attempting to get the resident golden retriever to play! He gets along great with other dogs, but REALLY wants them to play with him! He also loves basking in the sun or snuggling in his donut bed. He has been one of my favorite 'puppies' and I have been fostering for years.

Canelo does great in his crate (he sleeps quietly throughout the night) and has been nearly perfect in terms of house training. Impressive for a 6 month old puppy!

It is clear Canelo has not had much leash or life experience. He is improving while staying with us - he even did great at an outdoor restaurant recently!! He has definitely improved on leash, but it is still a work in progress. Consistent walks help him improve quickly. We will continue to work on exposure and proper leash behavior while in foster care.

Canelo comes well when called but is definitely challenged by his enthusiasm for…well, everything! Trying to keep all 4 feet on the ground is tough! He loves to jump and I am continually amazed at his agility! We are working to curb this behavior along with puppy nipping however due to these 2 habits, I would caution applicants with small children/toddlers in the home. That said, Canelo has done great with my rough and tumble young grandchildren! Canelo fits right in to the chaos with kids who are okay with puppy behavior.

All in all, Canelo is a great puppy and will be a wonderful companion for years to come. He -loves lounging in the yard, enjoying the sunshine and the occasional romp in the grass! Canelo came from a home with other dogs and has done great with my resident golden. A home with another doggy sibling is preferred.
