About Elmo: Aloha! Elmo traveled all the way from Hawaii after being evacuated in the wake of Hurricane Lowell, and he’s now settling into foster life while he waits for his next chapter to begin.
Elmo is a sweet, social pup who enjoys meeting people and dogs, though he can be cautious around unfamiliar faces. His foster says he tends to warm up more quickly to women, but he has also done very well with men he knows, including his foster dad. Elmo can occasionally be nippy with strangers when he feels uncomfortable, so he'll need a family that understands his boundaries and allows him to approach new people at his own pace. Because of this behavior, Elmo is not recommended for homes with children under 12 years old.
Elmo has been friendly with the many dogs he’s met in his neighborhood and at adoption events. His foster has not observed any aggression toward other dogs, and he generally seems eager to make new canine friends.
At home, Elmo is proving to be a wonderful houseguest! He hasn't had any accidents in the house. He sleeps on his own dog bed in his foster’s bedroom and settles in nicely for the night.
Elmo also walks well on leash and enjoys getting out and exploring. Large buses and trucks can make him nervous, particularly when they are close by, so he may stop or seek reassurance from his person until they pass.
As Elmo has become more comfortable in his foster home, his playful personality has really started to emerge. He can be a little mouthy during play and sometimes likes to gently put hands or fingers in his mouth. He responds well when redirected to an appropriate toy, and his future family should be willing to continue reinforcing good play habits while helping him build confidence and learn appropriate boundaries.
One quirky but important Elmo tip: he prefers eating his kibble from a shallow bowl or plate rather than a deep food bowl!
Elmo is a loving, playful companion with plenty of personality. He'll thrive in a patient, understanding home that respects his comfort level with new people and provides positive reinforcement, reassurance, and plenty of opportunities for fun. With the right family by his side, this little island boy is ready to enjoy his next big adventure!
