Pirouette: Tiny Dancer, Professional Snuggler!
Age: 6–8 months old
Weight: 6.7 lbs
Breed: Yorkie mix
Read more about Pirouette
Pirouette may weigh a mere 6.7 pounds, but she brings a whole production’s worth of joy wherever she goes! This tiny Yorkie mix came to DPS with her sister, Ballerina, after a Good Samaritan found them running loose in a parking lot. Now safe in foster care, Pirouette is showing everyone what a loving, playful, and trusting little girl she is.
Her signature move? Raising her front paws when her person calls, politely requesting a lift into their arms. With an invitation that adorable, it’s awfully hard to resist.
A Little Play, a Little Lounge
Pirouette is a happy little social butterfly who loves playing with her canine friends. She can spend much of the day romping with her favorite playmate, then happily switch gears for hugs, rubs, massages, and kisses. She’s gentle, affectionate, and enthusiastic about both friendship and fun.
Her foster calls her “Baby,” a nickname she recognizes and responds to. Call her over, and she’s quick to come see what you’re doing—especially if there might be affection involved. She likes to follow her person from room to room, making herself a tiny, devoted member of the household welcoming committee. Yes, that includes accompanying you to the bathroom.
A Day in Pirouette’s World
Pirouette starts her morning around 6 a.m. with a trip to the backyard. When her foster stays outside with her, she typically takes care of business within about five minutes—a lovely start to her developing potty routine.
Her days are filled with playtime, companionship, and neighborhood outings. She usually walks around 9 a.m. and again in the evening, sometimes adding a late-afternoon outing. Between adventures, she likes staying close to her foster or spending time with the other dogs.
At night, Pirouette sleeps in her foster’s bed alongside two canine companions. Even when the others have drifted off, she likes to wait for her person before settling in. First she snuggles against them, then she may relocate beside their head and rest her little head nearby. Her finishing touch is an adorable snore: a surprisingly entertaining soundtrack from such a tiny girl.
Friends of All Sizes
Pirouette has been enjoying a wonderfully social foster home. Her closest playmate is Blini, a 12-pound young dog, and she also plays with a 20-pound resident dog and a visiting dog weighing about 35 pounds.
She has a particularly sweet relationship with Buddy, a 16-year-old dog. She greets him with a wagging tail and sometimes shares his bed, showing that she appreciates both lively playmates and quieter company.
Her foster reports that she does well with adults and children. Because she is so small, children should be gentle and interactions supervised. Her experience with cats hasn’t been reported, but they'd likely be bigger than her!
Lovely Little Leash Manners
Pirouette has earned high praise for her walking skills: her foster calls her the best-behaved walker among the five dogs in their care!
She follows along nicely, pulls very little, and enjoys being part of the group. In foster care, she has appeared comfortable around everyday sounds, movement, people, and dogs. She’s generally quiet, although she may contribute a bark when her canine friend Blini gets started.
Her foster also reports an enthusiastic response when called. Continuing to reward that attention will help her build on a promising foundation.
Growing, Learning, and Finding Her Appetite
Pirouette is still working on housetraining. She hasn’t shown much interest in inappropriate chewing in her foster home. As a young dog, she’ll still benefit from suitable toys

Ballerina: A little dancer looking for her forever partner
6–8 months old | 10 lbs | Yorkie mix | Non-shedding
Read more about Ballerina
Ballerina’s next big performance? Dancing her way into your heart. This sweet Yorkie mix came to DPS with her friend Pirouette after the two were found running through a parking lot. A kind Good Samaritan spent two hours patiently earning their trust so she could bring them to safety, then contacted DPS to help find them loving homes. Now Ballerina is discovering just how wonderful life can be when there’s a soft couch, a dependable routine, and someone to snuggle.
Her favorite position? Right beside you.
Learning the Ropes
Bella is a gentle soul with a very affectionate heart. She was cautious when she first arrived, following her foster closely while she figured things out. By day two, she was already coming out of her shell and following the resident dogs around, too. Her devotion to her person, however, appears to be a permanent feature!
If you’re on the couch, Bella settles beside you. Working at your desk? She might curl up at your feet or squeeze in behind you on your chair. At bedtime, her preferred spot is next to her foster’s head. Personal space is apparently negotiable when you’re this small and this cuddly.
She tends to prefer her familiar people and canine companions over being the center of a big social scene, but she has been friendly with the neighborhood adults and children she’s met. She doesn’t need to greet the entire world to enjoy being part of it.
A lovely little member of the ensemble
Bella currently lives with a young Mini Schnauzer mix and a senior Dachshund mix. She gets along well with both and happily joins in when her Schnauzer buddy invites her to play, though she usually lets other dogs make the first move. Her previous foster also reported that she did well with both a dog and a cat.
Her energy level is a lovely middle ground: she’ll play when invited, enjoy a walk with her pack, and then happily settle in for a nap. Chew toys and treats are favorites, and her enthusiasm for food makes training especially rewarding. She’s already practicing sitting politely before meals and is proving to be a smart, eager student.
Walks, snacks, snuggles, repeat
Bella’s day starts around 8 a.m. with a potty break and breakfast at about 8:30. She enjoys several walks throughout the day, including a longer late-afternoon outing to a nearby park. Between adventures, she plays, naps, and keeps track of her favorite humans. Dinner is served around 6 p.m., followed by a final potty walk before bed.
She’s still learning the finer points of leash walking, including choosing a side and sticking with it, but she doesn’t pull and likes to stay close to her canine companions. She checks in frequently with her foster for reassurance and has shown no interest in chasing animals or barking at passing people and dogs. Loud traffic, clanging gates, and gardening equipment can make her nervous, so calm encouragement helps her feel secure.
Car rides are another favorite. Ballerina loves watching the scenery and gets quite excited about her own personal sightseeing tour.
Practicing her puppy basics
Bella is comfortable in her crate when her foster goes out for errands. She settles with toys and a chew, keeps her crate clean, and has shown no signs of separation anxiety in her foster home.
Bella has also been a wonderfully quiet houseguest. Her foster hasn’t heard her bark—even when the resident dogs join in—and reports no destructive chewing or digging.
Her next chapter
Bella would love a home where affection is plentiful and someone appreciates a little shadow with four paws. She could do well with compatible canine

Sippy Cup: Filled to the Brim with Love
Age: 2–3 years old
Weight: 14 lbs
Breed: Maltipoo
Coat: Nonshedding
Read more about Sippy Cup
Sippy Cup came to DPS from the shelter with her friends Pacifier and Blankie, and she has been pouring her whole heart into her foster family ever since. With soulful eyes and an impressive commitment to cuddling, this little lady believes affection should be served generously—with unlimited refills.
A Professional Snuggler
Sippy’s foster describes her as the most affectionate foster dog she’s had. Sippy seeks out people, loves interacting with them, and would happily spend a good portion of her day being held or tucked against someone she loves. When cuddling isn’t on the agenda, a cozy bed near your feet is an acceptable substitute.
She also believes praise is a communal resource. Call the resident dog, Remy? Sippy arrives. Tell Remy he’s a good dog? Sippy appears immediately to remind everyone that she, too, is an exceptionally good girl. Why risk missing an available compliment?
One evening, Sippy headed to the couch for the usual after-dinner snuggles, only to discover her foster was still sitting at the kitchen table. Her solution? Climb onto the occupied chair and curl into a little doughnut right behind her person. A slightly crowded seat is a small price to pay for togetherness.
A Little Play, a Lot of Lounging
Sippy has playful bursts of energy, but she’s also an accomplished nap enthusiast. Her mornings begin around 6:30–7:30 with a potty outing and a request for attention, followed by breakfast around 8:30–9. Then she settles into her bed under her foster’s desk, keeping her favorite human conveniently within reach.
A midday potty break, an afternoon snack and snuggle session, dinner around 5–6, and a short evening walk round out her day. She enjoys brief neighborhood outings, while new places bring out her enthusiastic sniffing side. Every interesting scent deserves an investigation—and possibly a tiny contribution of her own.
A practical tip from her foster: pack extra poop bags. Sippy likes to make the most of her bathroom walks, and one bag may be wildly optimistic.
Friends, Admirers, and Fellow Dogs
Sippy lives with another small dog and can share her home with a canine companion, although she certainly likes collecting the lion’s share of the attention. She has a confident streak and will let other dogs know when something isn’t to her liking. She could be happy as a solo dog or with a compatible canine friend.
During an introduction to a cat, Sippy offered a few curious air sniffs and then showed little interest. She generally loves people and enjoys children who approach her gently and affectionately. Calm introductions help her feel comfortable; she has shown some uncertainty toward approaching strangers in a dark, unfamiliar setting.
Learning the Ropes
Sippy is making progress with both housetraining and crate training. Regular outings and learning her signals—such as whining or heading toward the back door—have helped reduce accidents. She often needs a bathroom trip soon after meals, so a predictable routine will help her keep building good habits.
At bedtime, she tends to drift off on the couch or a dog bed before moving into her crate. She may protest initially, but generally settles within about 10–25 minutes once her bathroom needs are met. She occasionally alerts to unfamiliar sounds, especially at night, but her foster has not observed destructive chewing or digging.
Being apart from her people is still difficult for Sippy. She follows her foster from room to room, whines when she realizes she’s being left behind, and may wait where she last saw her person. A lick mat can help distract h

11. Pacifier
Young · Male · Maltese / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat) · 21 mi from Banning

Pacifier: Professional Cuddler, Couch Supervisor & Side-Eye Specialist
Read more about Pacifier
Age: 2–3 years old
Weight: 20 lbs
Breed: Maltipoo
Coat: Nonshedding
Pacifier came to DPS from the shelter with his friends, and he’s ready to trade shelter life for a permanent spot beside his favorite person. This sweet Maltipoo has simple priorities: a comfortable couch, someone to cuddle, and a perch with a good view of the household. His contribution? Devoted companionship and some truly award-worthy skeptical side-eye.
A Little Shadow with a Big Heart
Pacifier likes his cuddles with a generous helping of physical contact. Beside you is good; touching you is better; slightly on top of you might be perfect. He’s curious about whatever his people are doing and will follow along or keep an attentive eye on their activities from his chosen lookout.
When he first arrived in foster care, Pacifier was a bit anxious and confused. Once he got to know the household, however, he settled in quickly and revealed his affectionate, easygoing personality. A little patience while he learns a new routine will help this loving boy feel at home.
King of the Couch
If your idea of a lovely afternoon involves relaxing together, Pacifier would like to submit his application to be your companion. He’s a lounger at heart, especially fond of finding the highest comfortable spot on the couch so he can supervise everything below.
His day starts around 7 a.m. with a trip outside, followed by breakfast. Then it’s time for the important business of lounging, observing, and collecting affection. Dinner is around 6 p.m., and he sleeps overnight in a crate in the family room.
Friends, Felines & Family
Pacifier has been very good with the cats in his foster home, mostly ignoring them with an occasional curious sniff. He loves the family’s teenagers and peacefully shares space with their large dog, although he hasn’t shown much interest in playing with her. His favorite social activity appears to be spending time with his humans.
Learning the Ropes
Pacifier walks fairly well on leash, though he sometimes pulls toward something he wants to investigate. His foster family hasn’t encountered other dogs on their walks, so his reactions to passing dogs are still unknown.
He’s making progress with housetraining but will need continued consistency and supervision.
His first night in foster care included plenty of barking when left alone, but he has made excellent progress. He now settles well in his crate overnight and when his family goes out, with just an occasional whine. Stressful transitions may temporarily make being alone harder for him, so a predictable routine will be helpful as he adjusts.
Pacifier hasn’t shown interest in chewing or digging. He occasionally barks when startled or joins in when the resident dog sounds the alarm, but he has become much more settled as he’s grown comfortable.
His Perfect Match
Pacifier would thrive with someone who enjoys a relaxed pace and plenty of affectionate togetherness. A quieter household, a cozy place to lounge, and people who appreciate a devoted little companion would suit him beautifully. He enjoys attention and companionship without needing a packed activity calendar.
If you’re looking for a loving, loyal couch companion who will keep you company—and occasionally question your decisions with one perfectly delivered sideways glance—Pacifier may be your boy.

Peter Piper: Pick a Puppy, Pick a Playmate, Pick Peter!
Age: 12–14 weeks old
Weight: 9.2 lbs
Breed: Cockapoo
Read more about Peter Piper
Peter Piper may not have picked a peck of pickled peppers, but he has picked up quite a fan club! This adorable Cockapoo puppy came to DPS from a shelter with his sister, Miss Mary Mack, and quickly earned the nickname “Perfect Peter” in his foster home. Affectionate, playful, and eager to learn, Peter is the kind of puppy who makes you feel like the most exciting person in the world—especially when you arrive to say good morning.
A Little Play, a Little Lounge
Peter is a happy, energetic boy who loves a good romp, a collection of toys, and an opportunity to show off his puppy zoomies. He’s even learned fetch by watching the resident dog. Why invent a new game when your older buddy already knows such a good one?
Once he’s had his fun, Peter is delighted to settle into your lap or simply hang out nearby. He’s very focused on his people and enjoys being part of whatever they’re doing. His foster family describes him as a delight, and between his enthusiastic greetings and sweet companionship, it’s easy to see how he earned his affectionate nickname.
A Day in Peter’s World
Peter can be an early riser, and he takes morning greetings seriously. When he sees his people, he pops up onto his back legs, practically standing like a tiny human as he hopes to be picked up and taken outside. Subtle? No. Adorable? Absolutely.
He’s getting close to making it through the night without a potty break, especially when his family is ready to start the day early. A prompt trip outside gives him a chance to practice his growing potty skills before the important business of playing and cuddling begins.
His days include outdoor playtime, toys, zoomies, and plenty of affection, followed by well-earned rest. He settles for breaks in his exercise pen or makes himself comfortable in the resident dog’s bed. Peter appreciates having options when it comes to a good nap.
Friends, Furry and Otherwise
Peter has been enjoying life with a medium-sized Labradoodle and a resident cat, and his foster reports that he loves them both. He’s interested in companionship and play, and his foster thinks he could make a wonderful buddy for another dog.
He’s also learning that friendship comes with a few household boundaries. When redirected away from the resident dog’s belongings, Peter has been willing to find another activity. He’s a bright little student who benefits from clear, gentle guidance and praise for good choices.
Puppy Skills in Progress
Peter is making encouraging progress with housetraining. His fosters use the cue “go potty” and reward him when he gets it right, and he’s catching on quickly. He’ll need continued consistency, frequent potty opportunities, and a family that celebrates his successes while remembering he’s still a baby.
He enjoys companionship and can be sad when his people leave, but he also practices settling in his pen for periods each day. Continuing with short, positive sessions of independent downtime will help him become more comfortable on his own.
Peter is teething and loves his toys, so a good selection of puppy-safe chews will be essential. He can bark, but his foster hasn’t found him particularly vocal.
His foster has noticed very little shedding so far. His Cockapoo coat will need regular brushing and grooming as he grows.
His Perfect Match
Peter would love a family excited to play with him, teach him, and welcome him into their everyday activities. A compatible resident dog could be a lovely bonus, and a secure yard would give him space for his beloved romps and fetch sessions.
He’s bright, responsive, and already le

Bixby: Little Legs, Big Zoomies, and a Love of Life!
Age: 2 years old
Weight: 10 lbs
Breed: Terrier mix
Read more about Bixby
Bixby is a little dog who finds big joy in the comforts of home. Rescued from a shelter, this scruffy fellow wasted no time discovering the good stuff: sunny lounging spots, entertaining toys, tasty meals, and a cozy bed with covers to burrow beneath. His enthusiasm is contagious, and his happy greetings make it very clear that seeing his favorite person is a highlight of his day.
A Little Play, a Little Lounge
Bixby’s daily schedule includes a couple of very important appointments with the zoomies. When the mood strikes, he grabs a toy, gives it an enthusiastic shake, tosses it into the air, and chases after it. He’s quite capable of providing his own entertainment—and yours.
Between these bursts of activity, he’s a champion lounger. The couch, a sunny patch of floor, his crate, and your bed all meet his standards for a comfortable resting place. He enjoys knowing where his person is without needing to follow every single step.
Bixby prefers affection on his own terms. He isn’t always comfortable being scooped up for a cuddle, but when you stretch out on the couch, he may climb onto your chest to say hello before settling beside you or near your feet. At bedtime, his softer side really shines: he loves burrowing under the covers and sleeping close.
A Day in Bixby’s World
Bixby typically starts his day around 8 a.m., although he’s happy to sleep in until his person is ready to get up. Breakfast is followed by a roughly 20-minute walk, then it’s time to relax and keep an eye on the household.
A short early-afternoon outing provides another potty break and a chance to explore. Dinner is around 6 p.m., followed by another brief walk. Add in some toy wrestling, a few zoomie laps, and an evening beside his person, and Bixby considers that a day well spent.
He’s comfortable using his crate and sometimes chooses to rest there on his own when he wants a quiet retreat. Overnight, his favorite arrangement has been sleeping in his foster’s bed, tucked beneath the blankets.
Home Alone and Household Skills
Bixby has become housetrained in his foster home after some initial accidents. Three daily walks have worked well for him, and his adopters should continue a consistent routine while he adjusts to a new environment.
He has also done well alone for four to five hours in his foster home, both with access to the home and during separate stays in his crate. His foster reports no destructive chewing or potty accidents during those absences. Although he was initially unsettled about being left, he became more comfortable after a few days.
Bixby has a low-shedding coat, with some loose hair that his foster finds manageable. He’s less enthusiastic about water and having his paws cleaned, so grooming and handling will need a patient, gradual approach that respects his comfort level.
Neighborhood Adventures
Bixby generally walks nicely on leash and enjoys getting out for neighborhood outings. He may react by barking at other dogs, particularly when they bark at him, and sometimes at men passing nearby. His adopter will need to maintain space from triggers and help him practice calmer responses with reward-based training.
He also has a distinctive post-potty routine: once he’s finished, he may suddenly dart away from the spot. A secure leash and attentive handling are essential, including while picking up after him.
His Perfect Match
Bixby is looking for a patient adopter who appreciates his playful spirit and can help him build confidence in new situations. At the shelter, he shared a room with several other dogs and also did well meeting

Cyndi Lauper: Girls Just Want to Have Fun—and Cuddles!
Age: 6 months old
Weight: 12.8 lbs
Breed: Pug
Read more about Cyndi Lauper
Cyndi Lauper is ready to bring a little pop-star personality to your everyday life! Rescued from a shelter, this adorable girl was a doll from the moment she arrived. Sweet, affectionate, and full of puppy enthusiasm, Cyndi has two favorite settings: bouncing around with her favorite people and snuggling beside them on the couch. With her expressive face and delightfully silly antics, she makes even an ordinary afternoon feel like something worth singing about.
A Little Play, a Little Lounge
Cyndi greets life with curiosity and a playful spirit. She loves exploring the backyard, investigating toys, and running around with the kids in her foster home. Sometimes her backyard adventures end with a sudden, dramatic plop onto the ground—apparently, being this adorable requires an occasional intermission.
Once she’s had her fun, Cyndi is happy to find a cozy spot on the rug, curl up in her bed, or settle beside you on the couch. She loves cuddles and readily shares her affection. Folding laundry? Expect a small Pug assistant to lie down on your clothes. She takes quality control—and your attention—very seriously.
A Day in Cyndi’s World
Cyndi starts her morning with a neighborhood walk and a chance to do her business, followed by breakfast. She eats a combination of kibble and wet food and can be a little selective about her meals. Her charming dining preference? Smaller bowls for both food and water.
During the day, she enjoys supervised backyard exploring, a little sunbathing, playtime, and naps. Another walk and dinner round out her evening, followed by a final burst of fun before she gets sleepy around 9 p.m. Then she settles nicely into her crate for the night.
Friends, Family, and Neighborhood Adventures
Cyndi loves the children in her foster home, ages 9, 12, and 14, and happily joins their games. Although she doesn’t live with a resident dog, she was comfortable with another foster dog who stayed overnight. On walks, other dogs are exciting potential playmates, and she’s eager to say hello.
Short neighborhood outings are more her style than long walks. There are things to sniff and places to investigate, and she sometimes pulls to get out in front of the action. She’ll benefit from continued practice with polite leash manners. Loud outdoor noises, such as a leaf blower or gardening equipment, may earn a bark, but she’s generally quiet inside the house.
Puppy Skills in Progress
Cyndi is crate-trained and has done well spending short periods alone in her crate, typically less than an hour. For longer absences, her fosters use an exercise pen, where she has also settled comfortably without whining or crying.
Like any busy, teething puppy, Cyndi needs appropriate outlets for her chewing. Keep chew toys handy and tempting household items tucked away—if she’s bored, she may appoint herself the household chew inspector. She also occasionally digs in the yard. Patient guidance, supervision, and engaging activities will help her continue learning.
Her Perfect Match
Cyndi would love a home that enjoys both puppy playtime and generous cuddle breaks. Her family should be ready to continue her training, offer safe things to chew, and welcome a little shadow who’s always pleased to see them.
This sweet girl brings affection, entertainment, and a wonderfully silly personality wherever she goes. Whether she’s racing around the yard, claiming your freshly folded laundry, or snuggling in beside you, Cyndi Lauper is ready to show her forever family her true colors—and they’re pretty irresistible.

Blankie: Your Very Own Comfort Companion!
Age: 2–3 years old
Weight: 18 lbs
Breed: Maltipoo
Coat: Non-shedding
Read more about Blankie
Some dogs grow into their names. Blankie has already tucked himself into his! This gentle Maltipoo came to DPS from a shelter alongside his buddies Pacifier and Sippy Cup. All three had experienced neglect and arrived with terribly bedraggled coats, but beneath those tangles were wonderfully sweet spirits. From his very first day in foster care, Blankie has been friendly, affectionate, and ready to enjoy the comforts of a loving home.
Now he’s looking for a family to share his favorite things: leisurely walks, a good game of fetch, and a couch with plenty of blankets—and room for one more.
A Little Play, a Little Lounge
Blankie is a cuddler through and through. When you’re relaxing together, he finds a way to rest his head or a leg against you, just to keep a little connection. He’ll happily hop into your lap for affection, then nestle into a pile of blankets for a nap.
He’s also committed to distributing his love fairly. When his foster parents sit together on the couch, Blankie parks himself between them, snuggling with one before moving over to give the other a turn. Nobody gets left out of the Blankie love rotation!
Alongside his lounging talents, he has a playful side. He enjoys fetch and knows that bringing the ball right back is the secret to keeping the game going. His moderate energy makes for a lovely balance of activity and relaxation.
A Day in Blankie’s World
Blankie enjoys breakfast around 9 a.m. and dinner around 7 p.m., with a walk after each meal. Between outings, he likes keeping his foster company, stretching out on the couch, or finding a sunny spot around the house.
Evenings are for affection, a little play, and burrowing into his beloved blankets. At bedtime, he sleeps on his own dog bed in his foster parents’ bedroom, close to his favorite people.
His foster has used a crate for car travel, but hasn’t established an at-home crate routine.
Neighborhood Adventures
Blankie is a pleasant walking companion who generally matches his person’s pace and walks with minimal pulling. He enjoys investigating interesting smells and taking in the neighborhood.
Seeing another dog can make him forget his otherwise lovely leash manners: he may pull and bark in his eagerness to meet a potential friend. His adopters can help him practice calmer responses and polite greetings. He doesn’t bark at people on walks, though he will sometimes join in when the neighboring dog barks across the fence.
Blankie came into rescue with canine buddies and shows interest in other dogs outside, but he is currently the only pet in his foster home.
Household Skills and Little Lessons
Blankie is a responsive boy who picks up household expectations quickly. His foster reports that a few gentle reminders were enough to help him understand that the human bed was off-limits. He has also been remarkably cooperative with care, including taking his post-neuter medication.
His housetraining is progressing well. He still has an occasional accident, approximately every other day, so his adopters should continue regular potty opportunities, praise, and a consistent routine.
He hasn’t shown destructive chewing or digging in foster care
Building Confidence on His Own
Blankie enjoys companionship and is still learning to settle comfortably when his people leave. Sometimes he barks for approximately the first 30 minutes before curling up on the couch for a nap; other times, he skips the barking altogether. Short, positive practice sessions and a predictable departure routine will help him continue building confidence. His family should be comfo

Miss Mary Mack: A Little Song, a Little Dance, a Whole Lot of Love!
Age: 12–14 weeks old
Weight: 10 lbs
Breed: Cockapoo
Read more about Miss Mary Mack
Miss Mary Mack has a morning routine guaranteed to improve yours: pick up a favorite toy, do a happy little dance, and invite everyone to celebrate another wonderful day! This adorable Cockapoo puppy came to DPS from a shelter with her brother, Peter Piper, and has been spreading joy ever since. Affectionately called Missy, she’s a sweet, adaptable girl who approaches life with a trusting heart—and considers your lap an excellent place to recharge.
A Little Play, a Little Lounge
Missy has mastered the puppy equation: play, snuggle, nap, repeat. She loves her rope toy and ball, enjoys a good game of fetch, and eagerly brings her enthusiasm to whatever her people are doing. Once she’s finished playing, she’s quick to climb into a lap and settle in for a snooze.
She forms close bonds with her people and happily follows them around the house. During the workday, she has been a lovely little office companion, quietly napping nearby while her foster mom works. Her greatest talent might be making ordinary moments feel special. Answering emails is considerably sweeter with a sleepy puppy keeping you company.
A Day in Missy’s World
Miss Mary Mack starts her day around 6:30 a.m., positively delighted to be awake. With a toy in her mouth and a wiggle in her step, she’s ready for affection and a little playtime before joining the resident dog’s morning outing. Missy rides in a carrier bag, quietly taking in the neighborhood sights and sounds.
Breakfast is served around 7 a.m., followed by toys, lap time, and a nap. Lunch arrives around noon, with another outing in her bag and more opportunities to practice her favorite activities: fetching, cuddling, and falling asleep adorably. Dinner is around 5 p.m., followed by another round of puppy fun before bedtime.
Although she initially slept in a pen with a little television noise to help her settle, Missy has made wonderful progress. She now takes all her naps in her crate and sleeps there without a peep!
Friends, Furry and Otherwise
Missy has enjoyed the company of her foster family’s seven-year-old resident dog. She’s eager to play and would very much like to know whether sharing her toys might persuade her older friend to join the fun.
She initially ignored the resident cat, then became interested in inviting the cat to play, too. Her adopters should continue supervised introductions and help her learn that feline friends get to choose whether they accept a puppy’s invitation.
Out in her carrier bag, Missy has been a curious, composed little passenger. City sounds, passing buses, and unfamiliar noises haven’t fazed her much; she takes things in and adapts quickly. Even discovering her own reflection has been another fascinating chapter in her puppy education. She hasn’t started walking on leash yet, so that adventure is still ahead.
Puppy Skills in Progress
Missy is making excellent strides with potty training. After starting with potty pads, she is now going outside and learning the cue “go potty.” She’ll need her adopters to continue that progress with frequent potty breaks, a consistent routine, and plenty of praise.
Her crate has become a comfortable place for naps and overnight sleep. Being left home alone has been a separate learning experience: she initially howled for a while when her foster mom left her in her pen. With short practice sessions, she has been building confidence. Her family should continue helping her learn that time on her own can be safe and comfortable, gradually increasing absences as she’s ready.
Her foster hasn’t observed troublesome chewi

Pumpernickel: One Tooth, Plenty of Personality
7-8 years old * 11 lbs * Shih Tzu mix
Pumpernickel has one tooth left, a very enthusiastic relationship with breakfast, and a whole new lease on life. When DPS rescued him from the shelter, his mouth was in terrible shape. Painful dental disease had this little gentleman feeling miserable, and we weren’t yet seeing the real dog underneath. One major dental later—with all but one tooth removed—Pumpernickel is feeling SO much better. There are even zoomies now! Apparently, beneath that serious expression was a fellow who still had a little pep waiting to be unlocked.
He’ll need soft food for life, which Pumpernickel considers a perfectly acceptable arrangement. If you’re serving meals, he’ll be attending.
A Gentleman of Leisure
Known as Nicky in his foster home, Pumpernickel is a quiet companion with a slightly stoic exterior and a soft spot for his person. He isn’t a lap dog, but he likes to settle beside you on the couch or near your feet. He’ll brush against your legs, happily accept a good butt scratch, and follow you from room to room to keep tabs on household proceedings. His affection is understated, but consistent: wherever you’ve landed, that’s probably where he’d like to be.
His interests include snoozing in a cozy bed, stretching out on the couch, and enjoying the sunshine on the deck. He’ll even hop onto a padded patio chair to secure a proper seat for his outdoor lounging. Toys? Not especially compelling. Dinner? Now you have his attention.
Breakfast Is a Priority
Pumpernickel wakes between 6 and 6:30 a.m. and needs a prompt trip outside. After a little backyard wandering, he comes back in with a clear agenda: BREAKFAST.
When his foster is home, he roams the first floor and enjoys access to the backyard through the open patio door. The rest of his day is a pleasant rotation of naps, sunshine, and keeping his person company. Around 4:30 p.m., he begins delivering meaningful looks to remind everyone that dinner is approaching. His evening includes dinner around 5–6 p.m. and a leisurely walk, followed by more relaxation before bedtime around 11 p.m. He sleeps in his own bed inside an x-pen and also stays there when his foster goes out.
Stop and Smell… Everything
Pumpernickel walks beautifully on leash, whether strolling solo or sharing a split leash with his foster’s resident dog. He enjoys an approximately 20-minute outing at a casual pace, with plenty of opportunities to investigate the neighborhood’s latest scents. He has shown little concern about dogs passing at a distance and will politely sit for his leash—and for a treat.
Backyard squirrels receive a somewhat less dignified reception. He may bark, track them along the fence, or give chase. Otherwise, he’s generally a quiet fellow, sometimes joining in when the resident dog starts barking. His foster hasn’t seen chewing or digging.
Peaceful Company Preferred
Nicky lives comfortably alongside a friendly, older female dog. They enjoy a peaceful coexistence, though her invitations to play can make him a little unsure. When a more exuberant canine visitor comes over, he sets boundaries without escalating the situation. He would likely enjoy being an only dog or sharing his home with a calm dog who respects his space. He may also be an option for a home with cats; it's likely that if they leave him alone, he will do the same.
He has been comfortable with the strangers he’s met so far. He has also done well on two car rides in a crate, with a little restlessness on longer trips.
House Manners
Pumpernickel is almost completely house-trained. Prior to his dental, he struggled with the doggy door; his foster suspects it hurt him to push

18. Fritos

Meet Fritos: Bet You Can’t Cuddle Just Once!
5 years old - 8 lbs. - Shih Tzu mix - Low shedding coat
A Little Snack with a Whole Lot of Love
Some dogs steal your socks. Fritos steals the five minutes you were supposed to spend getting ready for work. This sweet Shih Tzu mix is an expert at turning “I really need to get up” into “Okay, just one more cuddle.” His signature move? Lifting his head, gazing into your eyes, and settling right back onto your chest as though your calendar is merely a suggestion.
Read more about Fritos
At five years old, Fritos offers a wonderful balance of mellow companionship and playful enthusiasm. He bonds quickly, follows his person from room to room, and has a gentle way of asking for affection. Sometimes he’ll request a pet; sometimes he’ll hop into your lap and make himself comfortable. Once the cuddles begin, he’ll look at you with utter devotion before closing his eyes and soaking it all in.
Equal Parts Couch Companion and Adventure Buddy
Fritos is happy to match the mood of the household. Relaxing on the couch? He’s available for snuggle duty. Reaching for a toy? Suddenly, he’s ready for fetch or tug! He loves squeaky toys, especially his little lamb, and takes his tennis-ball enthusiasm quite seriously. Sturdier, dog-safe rubber balls are a better match for him than traditional tennis balls, which he can dismantle quickly.
Don’t let his love of lounging fool you: this little guy enjoys an adventure. He completed an eight-mile urban hike with friends and four other dogs, happily investigating the scenery before settling down beautifully for a picnic. He also travels wonderfully on trains, buses, BART, and in the car. His approach to public transportation is simple: ride quietly and see how many new friends might offer pets.
On walks, Fritos generally doesn’t pull, but he does believe every interesting tree deserves a thorough investigation. Attempt to rush his research, and you may discover that this easygoing fellow has some firm opinions about sniffing time.
A Social, Gentle Soul
Fritos has made lovely canine friendships in foster care. With his foster’s small resident dog, initial introductions grew into playing, licking, and snuggling together. He was gentle with her and clearly enjoyed her company. He also spent time with a six-year-old Goldendoodle and handled that introduction with the same mellow, friendly attitude.
He happily accepted pets from a child around six years old. A family with older children who can appreciate his affectionate nature could be a lovely fit.
His sweetness extends beyond seeking attention. When his foster wasn’t feeling well, Fritos stayed close with a paw resting on their lap. He’s an attentive little companion whose favorite place is beside someone he loves.
A Day in the Life of Fritos
Mornings begin with a little play and some very necessary bed cuddles, followed by a roughly 30-minute walk and breakfast. After another round of affection and a few treats, his foster heads to work while Fritos relaxes loose in the apartment.
When his person returns, he’s ready for a longer walk, followed by fetch or tug and some couch time. Dinner is around 5:30 p.m., with a final walk around 9:30 before bedtime. Naturally, the evening concludes with more cuddles.
Fritos prefers settling near his person to spending time in a crate. Although he scratched at the door briefly on his first day, he soon settled into the departure routine. With a few treats before his foster left, he did well at home without barking or damaging things. His joyful welcome-home yelps are brief, and then he’s ready to reconnect.
Good Habits and a Few Little Quirks
Fritos is housetrained in his foster home. He had some overnight accidents and marking during his first few days, but those resolved as he settled in with a consistent routine and brief use of a belly band. His adopters should give him the same patience and regular potty opportunities while he adjusts to a new home.

Jiggle: Tiny Girl, Big Dreams of Couch Ownership
Jiggle is a tiny girl with a big appreciation for life’s little luxuries: a comfy couch, a neighborhood stroll, and a person who knows just where to deliver the booty scratches. This 5–6 year old, 6.9 lb Chihuahua mix is ready to settle into her favorite role: somebody’s very loved little companion.
Read more about Jiggle
This petite mama has been through more than her fair share. Jiggle gave birth in a shelter and spent almost four weeks raising her babies in a kennel before DPS could rescue the family. After working so hard to care for her puppies, she deserves a home where someone can take care of her—and where the best seat on the couch has her name on it.
A Professional Pillow Percher
At her foster home, Jiggle has discovered that couch pillows make excellent observation decks. She loves to perch on top of one, supervising the household in comfort. She enjoys being near her people without needing to follow their every move, and once you’re in her circle, you’ll have a sweet, affectionate little friend.
When her foster dad comes home from work, she trots right over to collect her welcome-home pets and scratches. She's also content to perch herself on a lap and settle in for a good snuggle. Her wish list is wonderfully straightforward: good company, gentle affection, and somewhere soft to park her tiny self.
One Ear Up, Walking Shoes On
For all her lounging expertise, Jiggle is also an enthusiastic walking buddy. When she realizes an outing is coming, she sits up on her hind legs with her front paws in the air, one ear up and the other down. It’s quite a persuasive argument for grabbing the leash!
She walks nicely without pulling and happily joins her people for a good stroll, then returns home ready to resume her couch duties. She’s a lovely balance of “let’s go explore” and “shall we watch another episode?”
A Cozy Kind of Day
Jiggle starts her day around 7 a.m. with a potty trip, breakfast, and a walk. She isn’t particularly food motivated and sometimes prefers to finish breakfast later—apparently, a lady needn’t rush her dining experience.
The daytime hours offer plenty of opportunities for lounging and keeping her people company. Dinner is around 5:30–6 p.m., followed by another neighborhood walk and an evening watching TV with her foster family. After one last potty break, she settles into her crate for the night.
Little Lady, Lovely House Manners
Jiggle doesn’t chew or dig, can relax at home on her own, and can be left uncrated. She sleeps in her crate at night and has been a well-behaved little houseguest.
She is doing very well with housetraining and heads to the back door when she needs to go out. She can also use potty pads if needed. Her tummy can be sensitive, and now that she's not with her babies, her foster is working on figuring out a food that will keep her digestive system happy.
Friendship at Her Own Pace
Understandably, Jiggle can be nervous when meeting unfamiliar people or dogs. She may announce a visitor with a bark, but she warms up quickly once she gets the memo that you’re her people.
On her first day in foster care, she barked and snapped at the resident small dog. By the next day, she was mostly ignoring him, and now they coexist comfortably. She would likely love being someone’s one and only, though a friendly, low-key canine companion could also be a fit with patient introductions. She's not one who's going to play with or engage with other dogs, but can be in the same home or near them, as long as they respect her space.
A Peaceful Place to Call Her Own
Jiggle would thrive in a quiet home with adopters who give her a little time to settle in. Older, gentle childr

Mikki: Puppy Eyes, Cuddles, and a Little Extra to Love
Read more about Mikki
Mikki is a 3 year old, 15 lb Havapoo with a non-shedding coat, soulful puppy eyes and a heart full of affection. His previous owner’s love language was food, so he’s carrying a couple of extra pounds— but underneath that generous serving of love is a little gentleman ready to become someone’s treasured companion.
Mikki came to DPS when his older owner developed dementia and could no longer care for him. He was a much-loved, well-cared-for pet, and we promised to find him a wonderful home where that love could continue.
An Expert in Togetherness
Mikki’s favorite activity is spending time with his people. He loves cuddling, happily follows his foster around the house, and has perfected a look that makes you think, “Well, surely I have time for a few more pets.” Spoiler alert: you do. According to Mikki, you definitely do.
Sweet with everyone he’s met, Mikki has been a lovely houseguest in both of his foster homes. He’s happy to relax in his pen when someone is nearby, and at bedtime he settles comfortably in his crate for the night. He enjoys companionship and would love a family that includes him in everyday life, with plenty of affection and cozy time together.
A Friendly Housemate
Mikki has shared his foster homes successfully with dogs of varying sizes. He gets along well with his canine housemates and walks nicely alongside his foster’s dog. He could enjoy a compatible dog companion in his forever home, though his greatest passion remains collecting love from his humans.
He doesn’t need an ambitious exercise schedule. Gentle daily outings, opportunities to sniff, and a sensible meal plan will help him work toward a healthier weight. His ideal fitness program comes with a generous cuddle break afterward.
A Coat Worth Caring For
Mikki has a non-shedding coat that will need regular grooming to keep him comfortable and looking his handsome best. He has also experienced itchy skin and suspected allergies. His skin has improved greatly on his current diet of Petaluma plant-based kibble with human-grade salmon. His adopters should be prepared to maintain a diet that agrees with him and work with their veterinarian on any ongoing skin needs.
While Mikki is comfortable with the dogs he knows at home, passing unfamiliar dogs on leash can bring out some big feelings, including growling and leash reactivity. He’ll benefit from patient, positive training and space from passing dogs as he practices calmer outings.
Mikki met a cat at the DPS Safehouse and was unfazed by her. He may be an option for a home with felines.
Mikki has already known what it means to be loved, and he’s ready to give that love right back. If you’re looking for a sweet companion who will follow you down the hallway, settle in for a cuddle, and gaze at you like you’re his whole world, Mikki would love to meet you.

Adopting a dog in Banning
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
