3. Kody

Senior (12 years 2 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 24 mi from Carlsbad

Meet Kody! Kody is a 12-year-old, 9 lb. Chihuahua with a sweet, social personality and an adorably goofy charm. His tail seems to wag nonstop, and he happily greets just about everyone he meets. Kody is good with adults, kids, dogs and cats, and on walks he’ll stroll right up to new friends with his tail wagging.

For a senior gentleman, Kody still has plenty of pep in his step! He enjoys a daily walk of about three-quarters of a mile, moves at his own pace and keeps up beautifully. He walks well on leash and would be happy with or without a yard as long as he gets regular opportunities to explore outside.

Read more about Kody

Kody is also a serious cuddle bug. He loves belly rubs, enjoys being close to his people and is incredibly gentle when taking treats or other things from your hand. He is easygoing about being handled and has shown himself to be a trusting little guy.

Kody appears to have some separation anxiety and may whine when left alone, so he would do best with a patient family who can help him feel secure and comfortable when his people are away. He is also working on his potty habits. Kody understands that outside is the place to go, but he has had some accidents and occasional marking indoors. His foster is currently using a consistent potty schedule and a belly band indoors to help reinforce good habits.

Like many senior pups, Kody may be experiencing some vision loss, but he gets around well and doesn’t let it slow him down. He is not a big fan of the crate and may be happiest in a home where crating is not heavily relied upon.

Kody gets along well with other dogs, although he can occasionally get a little possessive of his person when he’s soaking up attention. He responds to boundaries and settles quickly. It is best to separate Kody during mealtime so he has his food all to himself. Kody tends to be dog selective and would likely do best as the only dog in the home.

Overall, Kody is a sweet, affectionate, social little senior who still has lots of love—and plenty of tail wags—to give. If you’re looking for a cuddly companion who enjoys leisurely walks, belly rubs and being by your side, Kody may be your perfect match.

Kody is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $200.

4. Chewy

Senior (10 years 1 month) · Male · Shih Tzu (medium coat) · 24 mi from Carlsbad

Meet Chewy! Chewy is a 10-year-old, 9 lb. Shih Tzu who may technically be a senior, but you’d never know it from his energy! This happy little guy has the enthusiasm of a much younger pup and loves being right in the middle of whatever is going on.

Chewy is incredibly affectionate, friendly, and loves being close to his people. He gets along wonderfully with everyone he meets and is also great with other dogs, making him an easy addition to a home with canine companions. He loves being part of the pack and will happily follow his people around the house, always ready for attention, affection, or the next adventure.

Read more about Chewy

Potty training is still a work in progress, and Chewy previously did some marking, but he is already showing great improvement with consistency and routine. He may not have any teeth, but that certainly doesn’t slow him down! He happily eats wet food with a little kibble mixed in and keeps up with the household routine just fine.

Sweet, social, energetic, and full of personality, Chewy is a wonderful little companion who has plenty of love and life left to share. If you’re looking for an affectionate best friend who gets along with people and dogs alike, Chewy just might be your guy!

7. Ruckus

Senior (12 years 2 months) · Male · Poodle (Miniature) (medium coat) · 24 mi from Carlsbad

Meet Ruckus! Ruckus is a 12-year-old, 10-pound Toy Poodle with a heart as big as his personality. After his owner passed away, he found himself in the shelter through no fault of his own. Despite that difficult transition, Ruckus has remained incredibly sweet, loving, and eager to bond with his people. Ruckus is the definition of a companion dog. He loves being around his humans and hasn't met a person he doesn't like. Whether you're relaxing on the couch, running errands, or getting ready for bed, Ruckus just wants to be by your side. He's a wonderful cuddle buddy, sleeps through the night, and has been very well behaved when accompanying his foster on outings.

Read more about Ruckus

He's also a smart little guy who already knows the commands sit, lay down, and stay. He is potty trained, walks nicely on a leash, and has low-medium exercise needs, making him an excellent match for someone looking for an easygoing companion. While he is currently the only dog in his foster home, he has done well with other dogs he has met. He has had limited exposure to children, but all interactions have been positive. His experience with cats is unknown. Because Ruckus loves his people so much, he does experience some separation anxiety and will bark when left home alone. He has never been destructive, but he would be happiest in a home where someone is around most of the time, such as a retiree, someone who works from home, or a family that can include him in their daily activities. He truly enjoys tagging along and is a wonderful little sidekick. Ruckus has so much love to give and is looking for someone who wants a loyal, devoted best friend. If you're looking for a gentle senior who will happily keep you company wherever life takes you, Ruckus may be the perfect addition to your family! For additional photos, videos, and updates from Ruckus‘ foster home check out his Instagram @temporarytailssd. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccinations. 8. Charlie

Senior (12 years 4 months) · Male · Poodle (Miniature) (medium coat) · 24 mi from Carlsbad

Meet Charlie! Charlie is a 12-year-old, 18-pound Poodle mix with the best "go with the flow" attitude. He's quiet, easygoing, gets along with other dogs, and is happy wherever his people are. He rarely barks and doesn't let much bother him—you can literally vacuum around him and he'll barely blink. Don't let his age fool you! Charlie still enjoys short walks around the block and loves riding in a stroller for longer adventures. He has some age-related mobility issues and uses pet stairs to get on and off the couch, but he still gets around well. One of his favorite things is rolling around on his back, and it's guaranteed to make you smile.

Read more about Charlie

Charlie is potty trained, though he does have some age-related urinary leakage that's beyond his control. He's looking for someone who understands that growing older comes with a few quirks and will love him just the same. If you're looking for a sweet, low-maintenance companion who asks for very little besides a comfy place to nap and someone to love, Charlie is your guy. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $200.

9. Pryor

Senior · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler · 22 mi from Carlsbad

Medium-sized, handsome, and happy as they come - that’s how we’d describe our guy, Pryor! New to The Barking Lot as of March, 2016, Pryor came to TBL from Riverside Shelter. We thought he might be shy, as new Cattle Dogs often are, but no sir - Pryor showed us that he was a happy, outgoing guy from the very second he stepped paw into TBL! At just a little over one-year-old, Pryor isn’t a puppy anymore but he definitely still has that youngin’ zest for life. He loves people and loves other dogs, and he isn’t afraid to show his excitement over either of those things. A Cattle Dog through and through, Pryor has the typical Cattle Dog “nub” tail and the beautiful Cattle Dog coloring - brown, white, and “ticked” all over (ticked is just a fancy word for spots, FYI).

Read more about Pryor

Pryor is not quite fully-grown at about 32 pounds, making him a perfect medium-sized pup. Pryor currently shares a kennel with two other pups, and loves to play in the play yard with his buddies. True to his breed heritage, Pryor is a smart, active guy and will need a forever family that understands the daily exercise and stimulation that a Cattle Dog needs. He would love a yard, but could do well in an urban environment, as well, as long as he is kept active! Pryor walks well on a leash, and would make an amazing hiking or jogging partner. He seems to get along with every person he meets, and would do well on social outings with his forever family. If you’re looking for a perfectly-sized, happy-go-lucky, active pup, then Pryor could be the guy for you. Adopting a senior dog in Carlsbad

Ask the rescue about the dog's health and vet history. Many rescues charge less to adopt a senior dog.

Many small dogs live to 15 or older, so a senior dog can still be part of your family for years.
