I'm crate trained, though I'm still working on house training, so a patient and understanding owner will be ideal. I have a high prey drive, so a home without smaller pets or livestock is essential. I'm reactive to other male dogs or strong-willed dogs but is accepting of submissive females of my own size. I need a quiet place with minimal distractions to thrive, as I can become easily stimulated and is a strong chewer who may try to explore beyond normal fencing. One of my favorite activities is splashing around in kiddie pools—it's my idea of heaven! However, I don't do well being left alone at home for long periods, as my investigative nature leads me to explore my surroundings. With the right environment and a loving family, I am sure to bring joy and laughter to your life. If you're ready to give unique and wonderful me the home I deserve, please put in an online application to meet me. *Thank you to Sharon for sponsoring this wonderful dog at the Burnice Kraemer Sanctuary and giving him the chance for a better life.

Although I'm still working on my house training, with patience and love, I'll have it down pat in no time. With my playful and loving personality, I will absolutely thrive in a home where I can bond with my family and be a part of their everyday lives. I'm good with other dogs and children, but cats are an unknown. I don't like being alone all day, so I'd be best suited for a home where someone is around to keep me company. Since I'm just a puppy, children in the home must be at least 6 years of age. I know I'm cute and everyone will want me, but please be sure you're ready to take on a puppy as it's similar to having a newborn (2-legged kind) in the home. It's a lifetime commitment, not a temporary one where the love and attention wears off after I'm grown. If you're ready and able to give me a lifetime of love and wonderful memories, please fill out an application to meet me.

12. Homie
Adult (5 years 10 months) · Male · Husky / Australian Shepherd (medium coat) · 80 mi from Santa Maria

Breed: Husky / Australian Shepherd DOB: 12/09/2020 Gender: male Altered: yes Coat: medium Size: large Color(s): black and white Description: Needs a Foster Home This dog is in need of a foster home as well as a permanent home. If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Homie, the ultimate canine companion with a heart of gold and an adventurous spirit! I am an affectionate, outgoing, and confident Husky / Australian Shepherd who is always up for a good time. My playful nature makes me a blast to be around, and my confidence means I'm always ready to tackle new adventures.

I'm house-trained and will politely scratch at the door and whimper if I need to go out. I know a bunch of cool tricks like sit, stay, lay down, jump, gentle, shake, and high five, and I walk beautifully on a leash. I am also a fetch fanatic and loves nothing more than a day at the beach or sunbathing in the yard. I'm an energetic guy who needs plenty of exercise and space to explore, so I'm not the best fit for indoor-only living. I am an escape artist if I find a hole or gap in the fence, so a secure yard is a must. I am a pro at socializing with other dogs, making me the perfect playmate for any doggy friends I meet, but not a fan of cats. I am great with older children but young children are an unknown as I haven't been around any. And while I'm a total softie most of the time, I do have a bit of a "no-no" attitude when it comes to nail trimming—so fair warning there! This might be something to consider with a professional groomer. I was surrendered by my previous owner but I'm ready to find my forever home with a family who can keep up with my active lifestyle and shower me with the love and attention I deserve. If you're looking for a fun-loving, adventurous, and affectionate pup to join your family, I am your guy! 13. Streak
Young · Female · Border Collie (medium coat) · 53 mi from Santa Maria

Streak is a one-year old Border Collie. She came into rescue with her momma dog and a sibling, but they will be adopted out separately. Streak is around 35 pounds.
All three, what can we say, Border Collies have a definite theme. Calm, sweet, loyal, smart and sweet (Said it twice for a reason!) Maybe occasionally there are exceptions, but these three fit the definition of a Border Collie. And they did have great breeding. It's obvious.
Sweet, soft, looking to connect, each one has had her muzzle my face, searching. trying to forge a bond. Every border collie is ultimately looking for that bond with their human.
Streak is good with all the other dogs.

15. Zeke
Young · Male · Australian Shepherd / Mixed (long coat) · 53 mi from Santa Maria

Welcome Xicaru (pron Zee-kah-roo) from Bakersfield Animal Care Center. Xicaru means “beautiful” in the Zapotec language of Oaxaca…and beautiful he is. This 1 year, 51lb Aussie mix isn’t just all looks - he’s a sweet, sweet boy. We’re calling him Zeke for short.
He’s playful, dog social, and people friendly. Sorry feline people, no cats. Otherwise, he’s a no-brainer. Zeke recently attended a 2 week board and train with his foster / dog trainer. She’s got him dialed in and is looking to pass the torch to a calm and confident, breed savvy leader as he transitions into a forever home.
He’s more than a pretty face.
Read more about Zeke
He’s a herder with real drive so he’ll need someone knowledgeable to help him scratch that itch. Zeke is also a very relationship oriented dog who thrives when he knows what’s expected of him, while also being honest that he’d prefer to be someone’s one and only. He’s done well with 95% of the dogs he’s met, but without a confident leader savvy in pack dynamics, he’ll take advantage. He’s also sensitive to wheeled objects - bikes, scooters, strollers. He’d be a great canine companion, either as an only or with another compatible dog. He tends to prefer female dogs. He’s crate trained, potty trained, knows basic obedience, and more. He is not cat friendly.
Zeke is microchipped, neutered, and UTD on vaccines.
Zeke is in Visalia.

Adopting a dog with children in Santa Maria
Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.
Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.
Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
