BIO
Hello! My name is Sassa. I am currently undergoing heartworm treatment. When that is complete, I will be spayed. I will be ready for adoption in October. I get very excited when visitors come to the house. I am very friendly and affectionate, especially with children, I love children.I am friendly with all the dogs I meet. I even had a puppy friend to play with. I have not met any cats, so I do not know how I feel about them. I love my stuffies and chew toys. I like going for rides in the car. I walk very well on a leash. I come when you call my name and I know no means no. I am very good about getting baths. I was in bad shape when I came into rescue and foster mom had to give me lots of baths. Look at me now! I will require iron and joint supplements to help me continue to do well.I would like to find a home with someone that would love a very sweet old girl with spirit like me to follow them around. I am great with children but would do best as a companion to someone that is home more often than not. I am really a gem that deserves a good life with someone that loves me. Could that be you?

3. Sweetie Pie
Senior · Female · Terrier / Mixed · 15 mi from Mount Prospect

Meet Sweetie Pie! Sweetie Pie is a sweet, laid-back girl who loves being with her people but is also perfectly happy relaxing on her blanket nearby. She’s potty trained, travels well in her crate, and does great with dogs and kids. She’s also good with cats as long as they don’t run—because a running cat can quickly turn into a fun game of chase! Sweetie Pie loves going for walks and is always ready to sniff and explore. She enjoys meeting other dogs and has plenty of terrier instinct when it comes to squirrels, chipmunks, and other critters, so she’s still working on her leash manners and “leave it.”When she’s not out exploring, Sweetie Pie enjoys belly rubs, lounging on the couch, and playing with her favorite tennis ball and rope toy.

She doesn’t bark much and can be wonderfully calm and content. She does get a little anxious when left alone in her crate and may whine or rearrange things while you’re gone. She seems to settle better when another crated dog is nearby.Sweetie Pie is also continuing treatment for a scratched eye and some skin issues, so her new family will need to keep up with her eye drops and care.Sweetie Pie is a lovable girl with a great mix of relaxed and playful. She’s looking for a family who will enjoy her walks, give her plenty of belly rubs, and appreciate all the sweet little things that make her special. His ideal walks aren't about rushing, they're about stopping to smell EVERYTHING!He's still working on his leash manners, but he responds beautifully to a calm voice and positive reinforcement. In fact, Rocky absolutely soaks up a good "Good Boy!" after a walk or when he does something right. Rocky loves most people and other dogs and has shown that he can handle unexpected situations calmly. When he encountered an aggressive dog while out walking, he simply redirected and did wonderfully. His foster has found that keeping things calm and low-key after walks and when returning home helps Rocky settle in nicely. And then there's Rocky's favorite place in the whole house… the couch. He is absolutely the King of the Couch and will happily wait there for his favorite head and back scratches. After a walk, there's nothing he enjoys more than having his head and back gently stroked.Rocky is also comfortable in a crate when needed, although he's so well behaved that his foster eventually gave him free run of the house. He would love a home where his person is around much of the time because, more than anything, Rocky wants to be wherever you are. Rocky's favorites: Walks & exploring Being with his person Head & back scratches Being King of the Couch Hearing what a good boy he is! Rocky's boundaries:Rocky doesn't enjoy having his stomach or underside touched, and he doesn't like being picked up. His forever family should respect these boundaries and let him enjoy affection in the ways he prefers.Rocky has so much love left to give. He's not looking for a busy, complicated life—he's looking for his person, a comfortable couch, leisurely walks, gentle affection, and a calm place to spend his golden years. If you're looking for a loyal companion who will happily follow you around the house and then save you a spot on the couch, Rocky might just be your perfect match. 5. Nikko
Senior (10 years) · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 18 mi from Mount Prospect

A day in the life of a North Chicago Animal Control pup. My name is Nikko. I currently reside in the loving care of my hero, Damien. He is the animal warden at NCAC. I enjoy lounging on the couch, hanging out in my run, going for walks with volunteers, eating treats and basking in the sun like a beached whale! I am the ripe age of 10 years old. The world was not always so kind to me. I came to this place severely emaciated and with a large tumor on my face. I was in good spirits but nonetheless losing my faith in this life. My hero scooped me up and brought me to shelter. He nurtured me to health and learned I have some specifications when it come's to being handled. I don't trust too easily. In this new chapter of my life I am looking for a fresh start. I want to retire in a quiet home with one or 2 loving older humans. I am not very fond of children as I spent very little time around them and in my older years I prefer calmness and predictability. I am pretty low energy and dont require too much more than a coxy dog bed, a few walks and a yard would be nice for some sun tanning. I promise to be lazy, fat and not judge you personally. Consider taking me home and maybe we can fade into the sunshine together.

6. Morris
Senior · Male · White German Shepherd (medium coat) · 8 mi from Mount Prospect

BIO
Hello! My name is Morris. I am house trained and crate trained. I am currently being crated when my foster dad cannot supervise me. I am not destructive, I am still unsure of my new surroundings. I love it when visitors come to the house. I don’t bark at people. I just love everyone I meet. I wag my tail and hope to show off my ball playing skills. Don’t let my age fool you. I can catch a ball like a champ.I don’t care for other dogs. I pull a bit on the leash, however I am not reactive when I see other dogs. I just look and keep on walking. I have not met any cats, so I do not know how I feel about them. I like going for rides in the car. Maybe we could go on an adventure. I know lots of commands. I don’t care too much for toys, just give me my ball. It would be even better if we could play a few games of catch.I would like to find a home with an active family. A home where someone is home more often than not. It would be nice to have a yard to play ball in. If you are looking for an excellent dog with lots of spunk, look no further, here I am. Did I mention I love to play ball?

7. Waylon and Cash
Senior · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (short coat) · 18 mi from Mount Prospect

Waylon and Cash are 8 year old bonded male Australian Cattle Dogs who weigh in at 70 and 60 pounds respectively. The combined adoption fee for both dogs is $300. If you are still interested, please read more below.
Waylon and Cash find themselves in need of a new home. Their human dad had a major medical event and will be selling his home with a fenced yard and moving into more of an apartment type setting where the dogs would need to be walked. Due to balance issues, this will not be feasible for their dad to do. These brothers have been together since birth and are looking for a new home with a fenced yard where they can stay together.
Read more about Waylon and Cash
Anyone who is familiar with Australian Cattle Dogs knows they need regular activity and exercise. Waylon and Cash would love a new home where they have the opportunity for daily walks/exercise. They do get excited when seeing other dogs on walks but will bark and react more toward each other than the other dog(s).
They were raised with young children and continue to see little kids regularly. They are sturdy herding breed dogs so a family who would keep them well exercised and monitor interaction to avoid anyone getting knocked over or too excited/mouthy will be important.
Waylon and Cash will sleep in the bedroom with you at night, but not on the bed. They are good with free roam of the house for approximately 6 hours. Waylon and Cash have always been treated well and have had a great home. Will you give them a chance and provide their new forever home?
Waylon and Cash are microchipped, up to date on all vaccinations, housebroken, and neutered. A meeting will not be scheduled until you have an approved application, so if you are interested in adopting this dog, fill out an Online Application today! Once your application has been approved, an ARF volunteer will contact you to arrange a meeting.

8. Henley
Senior · Male · White German Shepherd (medium coat) · 8 mi from Mount Prospect

BIO
Hello! My name is Henley. I am house trained and crate trained. You do not need to crate me as I am a mature, well-behaved guy. I’ll just go take a nap when you must step out. I enjoy being around my people. I love attention, pets & scratches. I will alert you if someone comes to the house, but I will settle down quickly.I live with another dog in my foster home and had no problems with other dogs when I was at the shelter. I did not do so well with meeting cats, so no cats for me. I walk well on a leash. I will bark and pull a bit if I see another dog, we are working on that. I know some commands and I have a good recall. Even though I am an older gentleman, I still like this stuffie rope toy I have. I don’t play fetch. I like to go for car rides, but I need help getting in/out of the car. I am sure I can learn how to use a ramp. Maybe you could teach me.I would love to find a home where my people are home more often than not. I occasionally play with my foster sister, but I can be an only dog. I prefer my people over other dogs. I am a low energy, low maintenance kind of guy. I do, however, enjoy my walks. We could go for a walk, maybe a little bit of yard time. Or we could just simply hangout together.

Adopting a senior dog in Mount Prospect
Older dogs are usually calm, affectionate and happy with shorter walks, which makes them a good match for older adults and first-time dog owners.
Ask the rescue about the dog's health and vet history. Many rescues charge less to adopt a senior dog.
Many small dogs live to 15 or older, so a senior dog can still be part of your family for years.
