1. Harley

Adult · Male · Beagle / Mixed (medium coat)

Harley has been with us for a while due to an abandonment situation. He was left on the back porch of a house without any supervision or companionship. As a result, he took a while to settle down. He was terrified of going to the vet but was neutered and got all his shots. Now he is a happy go lucky fella who gets along with other dogs (although sometimes he can be a bit much in play). He's good with kids.

2. Balloo

Adult · Male · Cattle Dog (medium coat)

Balloo came to us from an unfortunate bite incident. His owner was trying to break up a fight with his four dogs and Balloo bit the owner on his wrist. From that point they advised us to come get him or they would euthanize him. Since he had to be held on a bite hold, we took him in. We were stunned at his submissive behavior and his overall friendliness. We believe the owner just got in the way of a dog quarrel. He walks well on lead and gets along well with most dogs.

6. Buster

Young · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

One of the most difficult decisions in animal rescue is when to euthanize a dog. As most veterinarians will tell you, they will only euthanize an animal for severe aggression or terminal illness. Buster, a pup under a year, was brought to two vets to be euthanized because he ate part of a porch. Both vets refused to euthanize him and the second call us for help in placing this sweet, wiggly pit. Appears to be good with other dogs and with people.

15. Duke

Adult (2 years 6 months) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Doberman Pinscher / Mixed (short coat)

Duke is a wonderful companion dog who has been bounced around various homes in his young life. Because of his past, he can be cautious when meeting new people; however, if you sit quietly, he'll soon be over to put his head in your lap with eyes hopeful and asking, "Will you be my friend?"
A stable household without chaos or drama is what Duke desires. In foster care, he lives happily with his work from home foster parents and their friendly big dog.
Duke is an excellent office dog and he understands that the doggy door to the backyard is used to go outside to potty. He crates well overnight. He is not a picky eater. He appreciates a good game of stuffed animal fetch or chasing his foster brother around the yard before returning to his office bed for a nap.
He enjoys a nice sniff walk and hasn't ever shown signs of reactivity to other dogs, cats, or people while out on his leash. He's not a puller and can rate his speed to yours.
When he is unsure of a new situation or new people, he likes to hang in the background before he's ready to meet and greet. He is not aggressive, just a bit shy. Having a confident foster sibling has worked wonders for Duke in such situations. He gains confidence readily from observing how an extrovert just saunters up to anyone.
Duke likes children just fine if they are mature, easy-going, and don't rush him. At this stage of his confidence-building, a home with children older than ten years of age is recommended.
Duke is crate-trained, housebroken, and has basic obedience skills. His bark-o-meter is low, reserved for warning his family that strangers are on the property. Once told to desist, he does.
If you allow it, he'd love to be your lap dog or snuggle buddy on the couch during television time.
If you're home more than gone, and you have a nice, playful dog in need of a sibling, Duke may be the one for you!

16. Koko

Adult (2 years) · Male · Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (long coat)

Grrrr….. wait…. no……. ummm…. How did my foster mom say I’m suppose to say hello? Grr..hello, no….. Hi! My name is KoKo and I’m so excited to meet you. I am a 12.5 pound miniature poodle. My foster momma says I’m one of the smartest dogs she’s ever met, but I need to work on my manners. I don’t have a clue what she’s talking about. Isn’t growling a proper way to let someone know you like them and want to meet them? Back at the end of July my whole world got turned upside down. My beloved mom and dad of 2 years could no longer care for me. Let me tell you something, they loved me so much and according to my foster mom spoiled me a little too much because she says I have some naughty behaviors. Back to that terrible day. I was so scared and confused I lashed out to the shelter staff by growling and trying to bite them. I truly meant no harm. I was just scared and had learned if I growl and snap things I don’t like happening stop. Thankfully the shelter director knew of foster mom and knew she would take a chance on me and take me home to foster. The day she picked me up was one of the best days of my life. While I’m still living with other dogs and cats her home is quiet and the best part is she lets me sleep in the bed with her, one of my most favorite activities. I was on my best behavior for about a week, before I let the first growl slip. I truly meant no harm. I was just tired and didn’t want to be moved over on the bed. My new momma told me that was unacceptable behavior and we had to practice being moved without biting. My foster momma took me to meet with a dog trainer and we have lots of things we are working on. According to the trainer I’m a pushy dog who lacks confidence and have learner growling gets me my way. I disagree, but whatever. We still apparently have to work on my growling. If you’ve got an empty lap, patience, and a willingness to continue on with my training fill out an application to me you.

Read more about Koko

KoKo is house trained and crate trained, but can be reactive in his crate. He gets along great with both cats and dogs and would like flourish in a home with a dog his size to play with. He enjoys walking on a leash and napping the day away on the couch. Because he does growl and snap he needs a home with kids over the age of 12. One of the conditions of his adoption is going to be, being willing to enroll him in training classes with a dog trainer so his forever family can continue working with him on his growling. He will also require daily brushing and grooming visits every 6-8 weeks to keep his hair from matting.

17. Juicy

Senior (14 years 2 months) · Female · Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat)

Juicy wants you to know that age is just a number. At 14 years of age she has unfortunately found herself in need of finding a forever home. While her eyes and ears are starting to fail her, she’s still able to get around quite well. Thus far she seems to enjoy car rides, slow walks where she can sniff around, nice fluffy beds, and a quiet place on your furniture to relax. Juicy doesn’t seem to mind other dogs or cats. With her vision and hearing failing she does startle easily and will snap at you with sudden movements so a home with older children would be best. We provide you giving a senior dog a home is very rewarding.

Adopting a dog in Madison County

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
