1. River

Adult · Male · Redbone Coonhound

I’m River! I’m a 2-year-old, 44-pound Coonhound/Redbone with the softest eyes and an even softer heart. If you believe in second chances and incredible glow-ups, my story is for you! When I first arrived, I was terrified of the world and really scared of people. It turns out my eyes were hurting me (a condition called entropion), but thanks to a successful corrective surgery, I can finally see comfortably—and I have completely blossomed! Now that I’m feeling good, I’ve discovered just how wonderful people are, and I love making new human and dog friends.I’m already house-trained, neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all my vaccinations. It took a little healing, but I'm fully ready to start my next chapter. If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle hound to fill your home with love, I’d love to meet you!

3. Curly

Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed

Hey there, I’m Curly! I’m a handsome 1-year-old brindle Great Dane weighing right around 80 pounds. Back in early October, a hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were very thin and dehydrated. Thankfully, we’ve been on a good feeding schedule ever since and have already put on 10 to 15 pounds! Everyone here says I am a total sweetheart. I'm super gentle with people, take treats nicely from your hand, and walk really well on a leash! I’m currently working on my housetraining, and since I love snacks so much, I'm a big fan of training time. I also get along great with other dogs! Even though I'm a big boy who likes to get vocal and chatty while playing, I'm actually very gentle with my dog friends.

Read more about Curly

I am all set on my vet care, too! I’m neutered, microchipped, caught up on all my vaccines, and tested negative for heartworm and tick diseases. I would love nothing more than a cozy home and a family to call my own. Come say hi to me soon!

4. Larry

Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed

My name is Larry, and I’m a 1-year-old tan Great Dane weighing around 75 pounds! Earlier this month, a kind hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were severely underweight and dehydrated. Since then, we’ve been on a steady feeding schedule and have already gained a healthy 10 to 15 pounds! Even after a rough start, I am the sweetest, most gentle big guy. I walk nicely on a leash, take treats very softly from your hand, and love playing with other dogs! I can get pretty vocal when I play, and I also like to do some goofy mouth play, though I’m always gentle and never put any pressure down.

Read more about Larry

Because I don’t quite realize how big I am yet, I’m currently learning not to jump up when I get excited, and I'm also working on my housetraining (luckily, I'm super treat-motivated!). One funny thing to know about me is that when my brother and I were put in separate outdoor runs after getting neutered, I got bored and showed everyone I can climb a fence! I’m neutered, microchipped, up to date on my shots. I’m so ready to trade my days in the woods for a soft bed and a loving family. Come meet me soon!

Read more about Dobby

Story: Dobby was found alone in a crate in a D.C. alley on a chilly morning without food, water, or a blanket. She’s being cared for by neighbors and has had her initial vaccines and vet checkup. She has likely spent her entire life confined to the crate and without appropriate nutrition which has resulted in some growth abnormalities in her legs that make walking a little difficult, though she’s getting stronger everyday. She has the sweetest, most affectionate disposition and has demonstrated remarkable resilience and curiosity now that she’s outside of the crate. She lives with two other small dogs and gets along well with them, though she doesn’t have enough strength for more physical play yet. She would thrive in a home with minimal stairs, maximal cuddles, and lots of love.

Story: Meet Summi, a sweet and gentle girl with a goofy boxer streak who is ready to find her forever family! Summi is a devoted shadow who loves nothing more than napping beside you on the couch (or in your lap!). She’s wonderfully calm and cuddly once she’s comfortable, takes treats with a soft mouth, and does great in her crate overnight. On walks she trots along nicely with little pulling and takes time to stop and smell the roses. Her playful side shines in the backyard, where she zooms around, chases tennis balls, and invites you into a joyful game of chase. Summi loves meeting other dogs, so a canine buddy to show her the ropes would be a perfect match. She’s a bit shy as she learns the world, so she’s looking for a patient, loving family who will give her some time to settle in and celebrate every small victory with her. She’s a sweetie and will make her future family very happy!

Summi tested positive for Heartworm. This is a very treatable illness that is common in many shelter dogs coming from the South. Treatment will be paid for by the rescue. For more information on heartworm, visit our blog.

Hi, I’m Stassi! Within ten minutes of walking into my foster home, I was already curled up snuggling—my foster mom says I’m by far the cuddliest dog she’s ever met! I’m a 3-year-old black and white Lab/Terrier mix, and at 35 pounds, I’m a great compact size for squeezing onto the couch right next to you.Back at the shelter, the staff always called me "the perfect dog" because I’m so easygoing. I love people, do great with kids, walk nicely on a leash, and I'm already housetrained. I’ve even gone out to busy adoption events and did great in public! I originally came into the shelter with another dog and really enjoy having dog friends around.

10. Demi

Adult · Female · German Shepherd Dog / Mixed

Hi, I’m Demi! I’m a 3-year-old, 70-pound German Shepherd mix who just loves being right in the middle of things. I’m super friendly, great with kids, and an easy passenger in the car. I’ve even gone out to busy adoption events and did great with all the new people and activity! I am very food-motivated, so if you have treats in your hand, you have my full attention. That makes teaching me new things pretty easy! As far as other pets go, I’m not a fan of cats, and I don't like dogs that play super rough or get in my face. I’d be happiest in a cat-free home where I can be your one-and-only, or live alongside a calm, polite dog who respects my space. 11. Paisley

Puppy · Female · Shepherd / Great Pyrenees / Mixed

Hi, I’m Paisley! My sibling and I recently lost our home when our owner couldn't take care of us anymore, so now I’m on the lookout for a family of my own! My name is Paisley, and I’m an 8-month-old (as of October, 2026) Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix right around 35 pounds.Because I’m still a young girl, I have plenty of fun, goofy puppy spirit left in me, balanced out by a super sweet nature. I love kids, hop right into the car for rides without any fuss, and I’m already about halfway housetrained, so I just need a steady daily routine to help me cross the finish line! My foster mom says I've also been doing great with my crate training and am catching on really well to new things! Right now, she's teaching me "sit," "lay down," and "stay" (where I wait for her to say "free" before I get my treat!), and I'm even learning to wait in my crate until she says the word "release." When I meet new dogs, I tend to be a little shy and submissive for the first few minutes.

14. Clementine

Young · Female · Spaniel / Mixed

When I first showed up here, I was painfully skinny, scared of my own shadow, and entirely unsure of what this world had to offer. But with consistent meals, a safe bed, and gentle humans, I didn’t just step out of my shell—I blasted right out of it! Now? Oh, hey, I’m Clementine: a bouncy, affectionate 50-pound Spaniel/Pointer mix who is head-over-heels in love with life! Romping with my buddy Milo in the yard is my favorite sport, and I genuinely believe humans—especially kids—are the greatest invention on the planet. (I haven’t met a cat yet, so they're still a mystery to me.)Because everything out in the world is brand-new and thrilling, I tend to pull on walks like a sled dog.

15. David Bowie

Young · Male · Collie / Siberian Husky / Mixed

Meet David Bowie! Take one look at my photo and you’ll see how I got my name: one ice-blue eye, one warm brown eye, and two giant radar ears! I’m David Bowie, a one-year-old Collie/Husky mix, and at an easy 32 pounds, I'm the ultimate compact companion. I'm naturally shy around new people and take my time warming up, but once I know I'm safe, I soften right up. In the house, my foster mom says I’m remarkably calm and chill. I don't bark, I listen well, and I have an easy, peaceful routine when it’s time to go to bed. Loud noises and fast movements make me jump, and I can be a little head-shy at first, but once we're bonded, my favorite move is sticking right against your legs like a little shadow.

Bronx — The Chonky Meatball With a Heart of Gold

Bronx is the chonkiest lil guy with the squishiest cheeks, and once you've given them one gentle squeeze, you're done for. This sweet "meatball" has come out of his shell, and the happy, confident pup he's become is pure joy.

Read more about Bronx

Bronx loves meeting new dogs and people and will trot right over to say hi, leaning into anyone who offers pets. Once he gets comfortable, he may even roll over for a belly rub. He's done well meeting kids too, greeting them with the same sweet, wiggly enthusiasm. He's also a great dog-dog! He gets along well with the dogs in his foster home and has been a star at adoption events, happily meeting new dog friends.

Bronx's greetings are legendary: a big, slow stretch followed by the cutest happy spins when he knows it's walk time. Sometimes he gets so excited he grabs whatever is nearby and tosses it in celebration. Out on his sniff-walks, he waddles along with pure curiosity and joy, taking in the world and enjoying being outside with his person. Then it's home for a round of zoomies.

He loves his toys, whether he's settling in for a good chew or playing his own game of fetch: tossing a toy, then chasing it down himself. Peanut butter is his love language, and he'll happily spend his day with enrichment toys, treats, and long sniffy strolls. He can get a little overly excited in the moment, but he's easy to calm and eager to follow your lead.

When the fun winds down, Bronx turns into a total softie. Give him a neck massage when he's sleepy and he'll rest his head right in your hands, all smushy and content. He's happiest snoozing at your feet, snoring softly as you work or relax.

If you want a happy, goofy, snuggly companion who will make every day sweeter, Bronx is ready to meet you!

BONNIE (watch my video!)

Female

DOB 7/11/26

Pit Bull Terrier

25 lbs.

Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention

Good with dogs kids and cats

Remember Bonnie and Clyde, the adorable stray siblings who came into LOVEPAWS together? Clyde has since found his forever home and now it’s Bonnie’s turn! This sweet girl is growing up in foster care and as she’s getting a little older, her personality is really starting to shine. And let us tell you, she’s quite the character!

Read more about Bonnie

Bonnie is a happy, playful girl who gets excited about just about everything. She loves being outside, running around the yard with her canine friends, playing keep-away with toys, chasing, and enjoying a good game of fetch. She’s also happy to supervise a little gardening, recently helping her foster family’s Nana dig a spot for a new plant. We’re pretty sure she’ll be expecting credit for the landscaping!

But Bonnie isn’t all playtime and backyard adventures. She’s equally happy when the family settles in for the evening. Once dinner is finished and everyone gathers on the sofa for TV time, Bonnie is right there in the middle of the action. She loves playing with her dog friends, enjoying her toys, and soaking up family time. And when it’s time for a nap, she has developed a rather adorable habit of tucking her head behind her foster mom on the sofa. Apparently, that’s the perfect spot!

Bonnie is also quite the affectionate little lovebug. She gets incredibly excited to see her foster family’s daughters and is always ready to dish out kisses. She enjoys a little tug-of-war, loves squeaky toys (especially getting every last squeak out of them!), and has a wonderful balance of playful energy and snuggly sweetness.

She’s a smart girl, too! Bonnie is learning her manners and already knows her name, sit, wait, gentle, and treat. She’s making progress with her training and has started exploring the world on leash. Like any young pup, she still has plenty to learn, but she’s coming along beautifully.

Bonnie lives with other dogs and gets a lot of exposure to kittens in her foster home. She is still learning to share certain high-value toys and food spaces with other dogs, so she is fed separately and will need continued guidance, appropriate management, and thoughtful introductions in her adoptive home. Her foster family is continuing to work with her on these behaviors.

Bonnie is growing into a wonderful companion. She’s playful, affectionate, curious, and happiest when she’s included in whatever her people are doing. She’s ready for a family who will give her room to play, plenty of love, and, of course, a permanent spot on the sofa.

Clyde found his happily ever after. Now it’s Bonnie’s turn!

Apply to adopt Bonnie today and give this sweet girl the forever home she’s been waiting for!

Bonnie's adopters will be required to sign a spay/neuter addendum (including paying a refundable $100 spay/neuter fee) and a training addendum as part of the adoption contract.

24. Jolene

4 Years 3 Months · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat)

JOLENE (watch my video!)

Female

~4 years old

Pit Bull Terrier

53 lbs.

Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention

Good with dogs and kids; untested with cats

Jolene (FKA Sugar) was recently rescued from the high-intake PG Animal Shelter and we quickly renamed her in honor of Dolly Parton. She is a 4-year-old compact powerhouse with a gentle heart, a curious mind, and a personality that has already started shining through. She may have only recently left the shelter, but she has handled every new experience like she’s been training for it her whole life.

Read more about Jolene

From hopping right into the car when she left the shelter, to meeting her foster family, settling into a new home, enjoying a bath, and politely allowing ear and teeth checks, Jolene has taken every “pit stop” in stride. Her foster family has been amazed by how quickly she adjusts and how naturally she connects with people.

Jolene is a true companion dog. She loves being near her people and has a sweet, gentle way of showing it. She’ll lean into you, sit close, turn her side toward you for pets, or put her paws up for a little extra love. Her tail is always ready to tell you how happy she is — from big wags when she gets a treat or enjoys a meal to soft, gentle wags when you simply talk to her or look her way. Jolene’s excitement to be with her people is one of the sweetest things about her.

This smart girl knows sit, takes treats gently, and responds well to guidance. She is food motivated, enjoys learning, and seems to genuinely like working with her humans. She’s still learning that the crate is a good place to relax, but she has done beautifully when given more freedom and has been a quiet, respectful houseguest. She appears to be house trained and has shown wonderful manners in the home.

Jolene has a calm and easygoing side, but she also has a fun little detective streak. She loves sniffing and exploring, and if something catches her attention, she is determined to investigate! Her curiosity and cleverness will keep you smiling. She enjoys walks and adventures, but she is equally happy relaxing nearby with her family.

She has done well with other dogs, is comfortable around everyday household activity, and has not been a barker despite plenty of outside noises. She’s already showing little signs that she feels more comfortable, including the occasional sploot and her adorable habit of crossing her back feet while she rests.

Jolene is looking for a family who will appreciate all the things that make her special: her gentle affection, her clever little personality, her loyalty, and her ability to make herself at home wherever she is.

If you’re looking for a loving companion who will happily join you for walks, follow you around the house, and then settle in by your side afterward, Jolene might be your girl.

25. Maizie

2 Years 4 Months · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat)

MAIZIE (watch my video!)

Female, spayed

~2 years old

Pit Bull Terrier

45 lbs.

Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention

Good with dogs; untested with cats and kids

Maizie (formerly Fortune at the shelter) was a last-minute Urgent List pull from PG County, and we couldn’t be happier that this sweet girl is now safe and discovering just how wonderful life can be. She was scared and shut down, and this former momma dog spent her time hiding in her kennel at the shelter. Now that she knows she is safe, she is coming out of her shell and showing us just what a wonderful dog she truly is.

Read more about Maizie

And honestly? Maizie is AMAZING. That’s exactly how she got her name!

This sweet soul is happiest when she’s loving on her people. Maizie is a certified snuggling expert who would happily spend all day, every day curled up in your lap. Her people are her world, and she wants nothing more than to be close to them, soaking up affection and giving plenty right back. Maizie is also the captain of chill. She has fully embraced the art of relaxing and believes every good day should include plenty of lounging, cuddling, and, naturally, a full-body massage. She doesn’t ask for much—just love, attention, and someone willing to report for massage duty.

But Maizie isn’t just a professional cuddler—she’s also smart, food motivated, and eager to please. In just a short time in her foster home, she’s already learning house rules and basic commands, doing wonderfully with crate training, and working on her place command. She patiently waits while her foster mom gets her workouts done and cooks, and she is quickly proving just how much she can learn when given the chance. Before we know it, she’ll be better trained than most! At this rate, we’re pretty sure she’s going to start giving the other dogs pointers.

Maizie is also a lovely walking companion. She walks very well on leash and, while squirrels and rabbits naturally catch her attention, she’s easily redirected with a subtle leash correction and quickly gets right back to walking.

When out in public, you’ll often find Maizie calmly sitting by her people, checking in for reassurance while quietly taking in her surroundings. She is such a polite girl, but she’s also very observant. She’s not an in-your-face kind of dog, but rather a quiet companion who is a steady, calming presence. She’s easy to take everywhere because she can calmly settle at your feet, follow your lead, and simply enjoy being by your side.

After everything Maizie has done as a momma and everything she has been through, she’s ready for someone to make her the center of their world. She’s looking for a home where she can be loved, cherished, and included—and where there’s plenty of room on the couch (and preferably a lap!) for this incredibly sweet girl.

If you’re looking for a loving, affectionate companion who wants nothing more than to be your very best friend, Maizie may be your girl.

BOWSER

Male, neutered

~2 years old

Pit Bull Terrier

53 lbs.

Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention

Good with dogs and kids; untested with cats

We're not sure where Bowser’s story began, but we know one thing for sure: his future is bright

✨

after LOVEPAWS saved him from a recent shelter Urgent List where he was timestamped for his final hours.

I took Bowser in as my very first foster because the volunteer reviews from the shelter were absolutely glowing—and he is living up to every one of those blockbuster reviews! ⭐️ He is easy-going, friendly, cooperative, and just an all-around wonderful boy.

Read more about Bowser

Bowser is a serious love bug. He loves to climb into bed, flop onto his back, and splay himself out completely—totally confident and comfortable. He’ll happily fill your life with snuggles and kisses. ❤️

And the crate? Bowser is an absolute rockstar. He settles in without so much as a whine or whimper, making him incredibly easy to live with.

He loves his long walks and only pulls a little, especially when he spots another dog. Bowser is clearly a social guy and would love nothing more than to go make a new friend whenever he sees one! He may even be a great candidate for doggy daycare, given how eager he is to meet and pal around with other dogs.

But when it’s time to relax, Bowser knows how to settle. After a nice long walk or nap, he is perfectly content to curl up and be the best snuggle buddy you could ask for.

We may not know much about Bowser’s past, but watching him embrace his new life makes one thing crystal clear: this sweet boy has so much love to give, and his best days are still ahead.

Could Bowser be the easy-going, affectionate companion you’ve been looking for?

27. James

Adult · Male · Terrier / Mixed

Hi there, I’m James! I’m a 1-year-old, 48-pound Terrier mix with a fun-loving spirit and a heart full of gold. If you’re looking for a dog who is as ready for a weekend getaway as he is for a cozy afternoon at home, I’m your guy!I am super friendly with both people and other dogs! I actually made the trip here with my buddy June, so I’m very comfortable around canine pals.I’m already house-trained, great in the car, and big-time treat-driven—which means we’re going to have a blast working on new tricks together! I’m a very loving boy who bonds closely with my people and loves being by their side.I do have separation anxiety and have a very hard time being left alone.

Read more about James

I need a home where someone is always home. My family will need to be prepared to work with me on the gradual, sometimes challenging, training that separation anxiety requires. This isn’t something that can be rushed, so my adopters will need to be patient, committed, and able to arrange their schedules so that I’m not left alone while I learn that being by myself is safe. In return, you’ll get an incredibly devoted companion who truly loves being with his people. I’m looking for a home with older kids or adults. Little ones just aren’t really my thing, but I do well with older, dog-savvy children who understand how to respect my space.I’m neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all my vaccinations.I am young and have a lot of energy, so I also need a home where I can get plenty of exercise and opportunities to let that energy out. If you like long walks or need a running buddy, I am your guy!Whether we’re cruising around town with the windows down, heading out for a walk, or hanging out together at home, I’m just excited to be by your side. If you have the time, patience, and lifestyle to help a loving dog like me work through separation anxiety, I may just be your perfect match.

Meet Ace

From the moment he arrived at the shelter, Ace became a volunteer favorite. His goofy personality, sweet nature, and endless love for everyone he met made him impossible not to love. When he landed on the PG County Urgent List, our hearts sank.

Read more about Ace

We thought that chance had come when a family applied to adopt him. But they changed their mind just hours before his deadline. With time running out, volunteers shared his story far and wide, determined not to let their favorite boy be forgotten. In the final hours, LOVEPAWS stepped in and saved Ace. Now he’s safe in a foster home, winning over everyone he meets while he waits for the forever family he’s always deserved.

Ace is a happy-go-lucky, house-trained sweetheart who is as easy to love as he is to live with. He’s the kind of dog who fits right into your home, learns routines quickly and is truly the perfect house guest. He’s incredibly food motivated which makes training fun!

He already knows sit, down, paw and wait, and he’s currently working on his place command, sitting politely before going out the door, and waiting patiently before mealtime.

Don’t let his athletic looks fool you—Ace is actually a giant cuddle bug. His favorite place is wherever you are, usually with his oversized head resting on your lap or shoulder while he gazes into your eyes, shamelessly asking for belly rubs… or maybe just hoping you have a snack to share. He’s a big baby at heart and loves nothing more than being close to his people.

Ace absolutely adores other dogs, he wants to be everyone’s friend. On walks, if he spots another dog, he’ll adorably flop down and patiently wait, hoping they’ll come over to say hello. It’s one of the cutest things you’ll ever see. He’d love a playful canine sibling to romp around with, but he’d also be perfectly happy soaking up all the love as your one and only.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect family dog, a loyal adventure buddy, or a goofy shadow who will follow you from room to room, Ace is your boy. After everything he’s been through, he’s more than ready for the forever home he’s always deserved—and we promise he’ll steal your heart just like he stole ours.

TEDDY IS A COURTESY POST - IF INTERESTED, EMAIL INFO@PETEY&FURENDS.ORG

Name: Teddy

Sex: Female

Estimated Age: About 1.5 years old

Best Guess for Breed: Vietnamese mixed breed

Weight: About 16 lbs

Lives With: Teddy prefers to be the only pet.

Housebroken? Teddy is potty trained and crate trained.

Rescued from: Vietnam

Read more about Teddy

Story: Teddy was rescued at just 4 weeks old - she was thrown away in a box next to a river in Vietnam and left to die. Since then, Teddy has grown up to be a smart, curious, and energetic girl who loves to go on walks and stretch out on the bed. Teddy knows basic commands, is leash and muzzle trained, rides well in a car and on a motorbike, and is very well-behaved inside the home - you don't need to worry about her destroying any furniture or shoes! Teddy is a bit of an "introvert" and does prefer a quiet and peaceful home, without young children or lots of noise. When meeting new people, she can be shy and introductions should be slow and respectful of her space. Once you have her trust, her sweet and funny personality really does shine through. Teddy suffers from EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency), and needs a special diet and medication to keep her healthy. Currently in Vietnam, this is very difficult and expensive to import, so we would love to move her to a country where these items are easily accessible, so that Teddy's health is not put at risk any longer.

If you think that Teddy might be your perfect match, please email info@peteyandfurends.org.

Adopting a dog in Montgomery County

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
