1. Hair Gel
Young · Male · Cairn Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 10 mi from Mount Airy

MEET HAIR GEL!
Hang on, folks, because this little scruff is going to wow you. He’s small, he’s cute, he’s polite, he’s outgoing and funny, he’s good with dogs and cats alike, and he’s says there’s no place like home - he just needs one.
Hair Gel is thought to be about a year and a half old, having been found as a disheveled stray. He got a bath, a bangs trim, and has bounced back nicely in his foster home. He’s quickly learned the ropes thanks to big foster brother Teddy (also a Tara’s House alum) and hasn’t had an accident in the house since the first week. Thanks to foster Mom and Dad he has learned Sit, Come and High Five!
He did exceptionally well at an adoption event where he met people of all ages; rolling over and asking for belly rubs as his signature move. If there are kids in his future home they must be over the age of 10, due to his small size.
He is active but once you get on the couch he is ready to cuddle. He sees you at the sofa and he wants to snuggle with you and the blankets. He is very chill. He sleeps in a crate with little to no protest, but would love to be invited up into bed if that’s your jam.
Hair Gel doesn’t have any vices (no food aggression, separation anxiety, or resource guarding) and he walks well on a leash. If you are looking for a little buddy to share your home with and love snuggles, sweet kisses and funny antics, look no further. He’s your guy.
Hair Gel’s adoption donation fee is $500, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for him by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.

2. Georgia
Adult · Female · Cocker Spaniel / Mixed (long coat) · 10 mi from Mount Airy

MEET GEORGIA!
Little Georgia, as her foster pawrents call her, is just blooming in foster care after being found running in traffic as a stray. Estimated to be about 4 years old and weighing 17 lbs, this little beauty got a bath and a spiffy new hair cut after getting her booster shots earlier so she is a healthy, gorgeous and very happy little girl.
Here’s what her foster mom has to say about her…
“This dog is a really, really good girl. She’s a great size. She loves to cuddle. She’s got a lot of spunk. She eats well. She loves treats. She sits, she shakes. She sits in the backseat of the car and doesn’t cry. She sleeps on the floor or in a bed although she would probably be happy if you invited her up, lol. She’s really friendly and gets along with other dogs. She’ll come up to you and rub all over your feet looking for a belly rub. She’s a beautiful brown color and very soft. She has the cutest little eyebrows.”
Although Georgia is the happy little pack leader of 3 other adorable dogs in her foster home, she is ready to find her own castle. She is a petite little thing so kids must be over the age of 10 please.
Georgia's adoption donation fee is $500, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for her by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.

3. Jiggy and Joe
Adult · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat) · 10 mi from Mount Airy

MEET JIGGY & JOE!
What’s better than a friendly little Yorkie? TWO friendly little Yorkies, of course! These fellas have been with each other through thick and thin. They’re 6 years old and are grateful to have been kept together in the second part of their story after their owner passed away, closing the first chapter. Having come to Tara’s House a little disheveled, they've had a spa day (hair, nails, teeth and ear clean-up), have seen the vet (sneezing and ear infection care) and are making a rapid come-back!
Jiggy is the smaller of the two (although both dogs also need to lose weight and are working on it in their glow-up foster phase!) and is the more outgoing of the two.
Read more about Jiggy and Joe
Joe is a little, we’ll say “rounder”, and is gentle and curious. But both boys love to love, and are friendly with everyone they meet, including other dogs. Their happy little nubbin tail wags are just about the cutest thing ever. They were incredibly tolerant of every poke and prod they got, both at the grooming salon and the veterinarian’s office, showing their gentle temperaments and sweet personalities.
They are happy little dudes that must be adopted together. They will love and be the best little companions who love to go for walkies and then cuddle by your side.
Jiggy and Joe’s adoption donation fee is $800, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for them by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.

4. Gadget
Young · Male · American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat) · 10 mi from Mount Airy

MEET GADGET!
He’s funny. He’s thick. He’s super dog-friendly. He has a foot fettish and will whizz on your kitchen floor after being outside just because. Found as a stray with Gizmo (who has since found his furever home), Gadget is now happily doing chores with foster mom and dad on the farm and is safe around chickens, horses, dogs and pretty much anything living. He’s just a happy little doofus and will be your shadow if you let him.
Gadget is a mixed breed and like lots of short nosed dogs, has had to have nares surgery to help him breathe. He also had some muscle mass to rebuild, having likely spent a lot of time in a crate. Now recovered and stronger, he is ready to find his own place (but would very much like there to be humans and other dogs in it please).
We wouldn’t exactly say Meatball is trained, but he does have excellent recall. Foster Mom says he’s like a Yo-Yo and will follow her around the farm, go off and smell the roses and run right back to nibble on her toes. He plays with the other dogs and cuddles in a big pile of puppies when it’s time to rest. He is doing better with house training (about 75% of the way there), and would benefit from a strict schedule to help him perfect this important life skill. He’s pretty young (we think he is less than a year old) and has puppy tendencies so patience is a virtue with him. He hasn’t had much experience riding in cars and was a total ditz on the way to the farm so riding in a crate is recommended.
Gadget’s adoption donation fee is $450, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for him by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.

5. Jellyfish
Young · Female · Rottweiler (medium coat) · 10 mi from Mount Airy

MEET JELLY!
She is gorgeous. She is polite. She is dogs-of-all-sizes-friendly and loves her people hard. This young lady is blossoming under our very eyes and is filling out from her very underweight initial condition when she was found as a stray. Now in a loving and structured foster home, this knock out is quickly becoming part of the family unit and is making herself a part of the three-dog pack. She runs, plays, takes structured walks with, and relaxes with the resident and visiting dogs. We can’t be happier for how life is turning out for her!
Read more about Jellyfish
Jellyfish is a natural beauty with a long tail and the most soulful eyes. She is slowly gaining the weight she should and is now about 80 lbs and approximately 1 year old. Housebroken and non-destructive, she has earned supervised access to her foster home and her foster brothers are teaching her two extremely important household skills: Relaxation and neighborhood watch. If Foster Mom is around, however, she would prefer to abandon her post and sit nearby.
Miss Jelly has had a few outings and not only did great in the car (mostly looks out the window) but was wonderful meeting new people and was sweet with all of the new humans she met. She has met kids ranging in age from 3 to 12 while on leash and happily accepted pets from all adults (men and women alike), although she sometimes still shows shy behavior around Foster Dad who is the biggest/tallest of the bunch. Due to her large size (she is also still growing) we think it would be best to go to a home with children over the age of 10 so she doesn’t accidentally knock anyone over. (She has a VERY enthusiastic greeting that Foster Mom is working on tampering down a bit.)
Jellyfish’s adoption donation fee is $500, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for her by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.

6. Maisie
Puppy · Female · Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 10 mi from Mount Airy

MEET MAISIE!
Once lost with her mama and siblings, this little girl was scared of the world and unsure of how to walk on a leash or what toys and couches are for. Her cuddly and curious side has now emerged in her foster home and she is the sweetest, cuddliest puppy.
Now about 10 months old and 33 lbs, she is thought to be a hound mix (we know what her mom and siblings look like, but not dad) and will remain a compact size. Her foster pawrents report that she is incredibly smart, active, energetic and agile. She loves yogurt, peanut butter, carrots, celery, blueberries and strawberries - and the way she sticks her little tongue out is the cutest thing ever.
Read more about Maisie
You will fall in love when she sticks it out and snores when it’s nap time! She also has amazing ears and the cutest curly tail. Her favorite toy is a Kong filled with yogurt and peanut butter, and she absolutely loves playing fetch or playing “catch me” with other dogs.
Smart little Maisie is potty trained (and knows how to use a doggy door) and crate trained and will go in at bed time (but will steal a cuddle in your bed if you let her!) or when you need to go out and do people things. She has met teenagers and did great. She is not mouthy at all and just likes to lick and give kisses. She also never barks and doesn’t care if another dog steals her toy - she will just try to play tug.
Although she is a little shy when she meets new people, once she feels comfortable (it takes about ½ day) she will cuddle you to pieces. She instantly does well with other dogs and lives with two resident dogs. They love playing and often go hiking on trails and play along the river. The little pack is adorable and Maisie is learning the ropes from them. Maisie should go to a home with at least one other dog in it.
Maisie’s adoption donation fee is $450, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip. You can apply for her by filling out our online application, which is found on our website www.tarashouse.org. Please email us at info@tarashouse.net with any questions.

Sex: Female
Estimated Age: About 6 months old (as of 10/27/26)

Weight: About 11-12 lbs (as of 10/27/26)
Lives with and loves: All people (including kids!) and other dogs
Housebroken? She’s working on it!
Read more about Dobby
Story: Dobby was found alone in a crate in a D.C. alley on a chilly morning without food, water, or a blanket. She’s being cared for by neighbors and has had her initial vaccines and vet checkup. She has likely spent her entire life confined to the crate and without appropriate nutrition which has resulted in some growth abnormalities in her legs that make walking a little difficult, though she’s getting stronger everyday. She has the sweetest, most affectionate disposition and has demonstrated remarkable resilience and curiosity now that she’s outside of the crate. She lives with two other small dogs and gets along well with them, though she doesn’t have enough strength for more physical play yet. She would thrive in a home with minimal stairs, maximal cuddles, and lots of love.

Story: Milo is doing GREAT so far. He's been such a little gentleman! He's slept peacefully through the night and is quite polite with people and other dogs that we've seen around the apartment. Bronx — The Chonky Meatball With a Heart of Gold
Bronx is the chonkiest lil guy with the squishiest cheeks, and once you've given them one gentle squeeze, you're done for. This sweet "meatball" has come out of his shell, and the happy, confident pup he's become is pure joy.
Read more about Bronx
Bronx loves meeting new dogs and people and will trot right over to say hi, leaning into anyone who offers pets. Once he gets comfortable, he may even roll over for a belly rub. He's done well meeting kids too, greeting them with the same sweet, wiggly enthusiasm. He's also a great dog-dog! He gets along well with the dogs in his foster home and has been a star at adoption events, happily meeting new dog friends.
Bronx's greetings are legendary: a big, slow stretch followed by the cutest happy spins when he knows it's walk time. Sometimes he gets so excited he grabs whatever is nearby and tosses it in celebration. Out on his sniff-walks, he waddles along with pure curiosity and joy, taking in the world and enjoying being outside with his person. Then it's home for a round of zoomies.
He loves his toys, whether he's settling in for a good chew or playing his own game of fetch: tossing a toy, then chasing it down himself. Peanut butter is his love language, and he'll happily spend his day with enrichment toys, treats, and long sniffy strolls. He can get a little overly excited in the moment, but he's easy to calm and eager to follow your lead.
When the fun winds down, Bronx turns into a total softie. Give him a neck massage when he's sleepy and he'll rest his head right in your hands, all smushy and content. He's happiest snoozing at your feet, snoring softly as you work or relax.
If you want a happy, goofy, snuggly companion who will make every day sweeter, Bronx is ready to meet you!

Remember Bonnie and Clyde, the adorable stray siblings who came into LOVEPAWS together? Clyde has since found his forever home and now it’s Bonnie’s turn! This sweet girl is growing up in foster care and as she’s getting a little older, her personality is really starting to shine. And let us tell you, she’s quite the character!
Read more about Bonnie
Bonnie is a happy, playful girl who gets excited about just about everything. She loves being outside, running around the yard with her canine friends, playing keep-away with toys, chasing, and enjoying a good game of fetch. She’s also happy to supervise a little gardening, recently helping her foster family’s Nana dig a spot for a new plant. We’re pretty sure she’ll be expecting credit for the landscaping!
But Bonnie isn’t all playtime and backyard adventures. She’s equally happy when the family settles in for the evening. Once dinner is finished and everyone gathers on the sofa for TV time, Bonnie is right there in the middle of the action. She loves playing with her dog friends, enjoying her toys, and soaking up family time. And when it’s time for a nap, she has developed a rather adorable habit of tucking her head behind her foster mom on the sofa. Apparently, that’s the perfect spot!
Bonnie is also quite the affectionate little lovebug. She gets incredibly excited to see her foster family’s daughters and is always ready to dish out kisses. She enjoys a little tug-of-war, loves squeaky toys (especially getting every last squeak out of them!), and has a wonderful balance of playful energy and snuggly sweetness.
She’s a smart girl, too! Bonnie is learning her manners and already knows her name, sit, wait, gentle, and treat. She’s making progress with her training and has started exploring the world on leash. Like any young pup, she still has plenty to learn, but she’s coming along beautifully.
Bonnie lives with other dogs and gets a lot of exposure to kittens in her foster home. She is still learning to share certain high-value toys and food spaces with other dogs, so she is fed separately and will need continued guidance, appropriate management, and thoughtful introductions in her adoptive home. Her foster family is continuing to work with her on these behaviors.
Bonnie is growing into a wonderful companion. She’s playful, affectionate, curious, and happiest when she’s included in whatever her people are doing. She’s ready for a family who will give her room to play, plenty of love, and, of course, a permanent spot on the sofa.
Clyde found his happily ever after. Now it’s Bonnie’s turn!
Apply to adopt Bonnie today and give this sweet girl the forever home she’s been waiting for!
Bonnie's adopters will be required to sign a spay/neuter addendum (including paying a refundable $100 spay/neuter fee) and a training addendum as part of the adoption contract.

He does well with big dogs, and will play until the cows come home. He is food and attention motivated, and highly trainable. He is doing really well with crate training, and has only had one accident in 2 weeks. Teddy is just looking for someone to be his new best furend and we know that he will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. Like all dogs, Teddy will need an adopter who is committed to setting him up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising him both mentally and physically. He will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive!
The fee to adopt Teddy is $475. That covers the cost of all his vaccines, the collar he’s wearing, and his care in his foster home. He’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines.

20. Jolene
4 Years 3 Months · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 19 mi from Mount Airy

JOLENE (watch my video!)
Female
~4 years old
Pit Bull Terrier
53 lbs.
Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention
Good with dogs and kids; untested with cats
Jolene (FKA Sugar) was recently rescued from the high-intake PG Animal Shelter and we quickly renamed her in honor of Dolly Parton. She is a 4-year-old compact powerhouse with a gentle heart, a curious mind, and a personality that has already started shining through. She may have only recently left the shelter, but she has handled every new experience like she’s been training for it her whole life.
Read more about Jolene
From hopping right into the car when she left the shelter, to meeting her foster family, settling into a new home, enjoying a bath, and politely allowing ear and teeth checks, Jolene has taken every “pit stop” in stride. Her foster family has been amazed by how quickly she adjusts and how naturally she connects with people.
Jolene is a true companion dog. She loves being near her people and has a sweet, gentle way of showing it. She’ll lean into you, sit close, turn her side toward you for pets, or put her paws up for a little extra love. Her tail is always ready to tell you how happy she is — from big wags when she gets a treat or enjoys a meal to soft, gentle wags when you simply talk to her or look her way. Jolene’s excitement to be with her people is one of the sweetest things about her.
This smart girl knows sit, takes treats gently, and responds well to guidance. She is food motivated, enjoys learning, and seems to genuinely like working with her humans. She’s still learning that the crate is a good place to relax, but she has done beautifully when given more freedom and has been a quiet, respectful houseguest. She appears to be house trained and has shown wonderful manners in the home.
Jolene has a calm and easygoing side, but she also has a fun little detective streak. She loves sniffing and exploring, and if something catches her attention, she is determined to investigate! Her curiosity and cleverness will keep you smiling. She enjoys walks and adventures, but she is equally happy relaxing nearby with her family.
She has done well with other dogs, is comfortable around everyday household activity, and has not been a barker despite plenty of outside noises. She’s already showing little signs that she feels more comfortable, including the occasional sploot and her adorable habit of crossing her back feet while she rests.
Jolene is looking for a family who will appreciate all the things that make her special: her gentle affection, her clever little personality, her loyalty, and her ability to make herself at home wherever she is.
If you’re looking for a loving companion who will happily join you for walks, follow you around the house, and then settle in by your side afterward, Jolene might be your girl.

Adopting a dog in Mount Airy
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
