Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of Oct. 2026 SEX: male
Approximate Weight: 50 lbs
Gets Along With: Other dogs and also passed a cat test! We haven't seen them with kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: SC Rescue Campus. Captain needs a foster or forever home to come to DC!
Read more about Captain
Special adoption considerations: Captain is a truly Lucky Dog. He tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!
CAPTAIN is Looking For: Reporting for duty! My name is Captain and I’d say I am a dapper gentleman looking for my forever crew! Check out my pretty coat of a uniform! According to shelter staff, I have leadership capabilities when it comes to good manners. I am looking for a forever family that will share adventures, affection, treats and good food, and cozy naps with me! The shelter staff also says I am very sweet, and good with other dogs and even passed a cat test! I am a great guy ready for a great life together! Come meet me and let’s go! You can even apply below now to adopt me!
What My Foster Says About Me: We will update once Captain has spent time in foster!
Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.

12. Gunner
Adult · Male · Beagle / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat) · 20 mi from Waldorf

Meet Gunner!
Gunner is a handsome two-year-old boy with striking amber eyes and a fun, goofy personality! He came to us as an owner surrender after his previous adopters, an elderly couple in their 80s, found his energy level more than they could manage.
Read more about Gunner
We think Gunner may be a Beagle/German Shorthaired Pointer mix, and he’s just a great all-around dog. He is currently being fostered by Johanna and living with her four dogs and 2 cats. He enjoys being part of a pack
and loves to play with other dogs. In fact, having a playful canine companion is at the top of his wish list! But when playtime is over, he’s happy to relax on the couch, chew on his toys, or snuggle under the covers.
Gunner has great house manners. He’s completely housebroken, crate trained, and quiet in his crate. He knows sit and down, takes correction well, and is learning to keep all four paws on the ground when greeting people. He’s also respectful of cats and comfortable out and about. He even did great on a recent brewery outing!
Confident, social, and easygoing, Gunner is the kind of dog who fits right into the routine. He enjoys being around people and other animals but doesn’t need to be the center of attention. He does pull a bit on the leash, but his foster mom finds him easy to walk overall, and he’ll improve with practice. Walks are likely new for him.
Gunner’s ideal home would have another playful dog to be his buddy. He can occasionally bark at wildlife or sounds, so a home where that won’t be an issue would be best.
If you’re looking for a fun, well-mannered companion who gets along with dogs and cats and knows how to settle in at home, Gunner could be your guy!
Gunner will be coming to the DC metro area on 11/7.
Apply today to welcome him home!

Best Guess for Age: 9 weeks as of Oct. 2026 SEX: male
Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 14 pounds as of 11/3
Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training.
Currently Living at: SC Rescue Campus
Read more about Rocket
Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy.
Rocket is Looking For: Hiya! I'm Rocket! Me and my sister Roo have loved our time in the puppy pile, but we are each ready to pack our bags and find our very own forever home! I'm looking for a home that will let me play with toys and get my puppy zoomies out and give me snuggles in between playtimes. When I'm a little older, I can't wait to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. Oh, and I should probably take a puppy obedience class or two so I can show you how smart I am. What do you say? Do you have room in your heart for me?
What My Foster Says About Me: Coming soon!
Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, they are at greater risk for illness than an adult dog.
Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog! TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $485, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online bit.ly/adoptaluckydog

Roo is Looking For: Hiya! I'm Roo! Me and my brother Rocket have loved our time in the puppy pile, but we are each ready to pack our bags and find our very own forever home!

21. Mj
Adult · Female · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 20 mi from Waldorf

Meet MJ! This sweet girl suddenly found herself without a home or family. When her owner walked away, MJ was left behind along with two children. As the family scrambled to care for the kids before their home was foreclosed on, they simply had nowhere for MJ to go.
Thankfully, a compassionate animal lover we've partnered with on several rescues learned about MJ's situation and stepped in to help. She volunteered to pick MJ up in Roanoke and transport her to her new foster home.
MJ is now living with her foster mom, Kim, and former WDR alum, Penny, where she's receiving all the love, care, and TLC she deserves.
Read more about Mj
Like many neglected dogs, MJ is carrying about 20 extra pounds. She had been overfed, under-exercised, and simply existed in the background. But that's all changing now. Since arriving in rescue, MJ has started her wellness journey with Kim. She's enjoying regular walks, a healthier diet, and lots of encouragement as she works toward a healthier weight.
We checked in with Kim for an update:
"This dog is such a special girl. She's incredibly sweet, has a big, happy personality, and loves everyone she meets. She makes friends wherever she goes.
MJ is one of the most affectionate dogs I've ever met. Sometimes I swear she's half human! She's very smart, too, and we've already discovered she knows several commands. She has wonderful house manners, and I haven't felt the need to crate her. She and my dog, Penny, became fast friends and are often found snuggled up together.
She's very gentle and takes treats politely. She is also incredibly expressive and always finds a way to let you know exactly what she's thinking, usually that she'd like to be a little closer to her people! At night, she sleeps right beside you in bed as if she's always belonged there. If you're looking for a dog that wants to be your constant companion, MJ is your girl. If you don't want a dog in your bed...well, she's probably not the dog for you!
We've already worked up to a half-mile walk one evening and three-quarters of a mile the next morning, and she did great. She is strong on leash and likes to pull, so we're working on that, and she's making progress every day."
Every day, MJ is becoming happier, healthier, and more active. She is embracing the love, attention, and life she's always deserved. We can't wait to see this wonderful girl continue to blossom in her forever home.

22. Poppy
Female · Beagle / Mixed · 20 mi from Waldorf

Meet Poppy!
Some dogs just need another dog to show them the way, and that's exactly who Poppy is.
This sweet young girl was found wandering as a stray in a known dumping area, but thanks to a Good Samaritan, she made her way to Worthy Dog Rescue and has discovered what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a family.
Read more about Poppy
Poppy has blossomed in her foster home, where she's living with another dog, Maggie, and several cats. While she was initially shy and reserved, with the help of her canine companion, she’s gaining confidence every day. Maggie has shown her the ropes, and Poppy now follows her everywhere, squeezes onto the couch or dog bed just to be close to her, and clearly takes comfort in having another dog by her side. Because of this, we feel Poppy will do best in a home with another confident, friendly dog to help her continue building confidence.
Poppy is housetrained, crate trained, and settles well in her crate when her family is away. Like many rescue dogs adjusting to home life, she experienced some separation anxiety during her transition, so her crate has been an important tool in helping her feel safe and secure. Having another dog has also made a big difference, and we believe she'll do best with adopters who have a flexible schedule and can continue building her confidence as she settles into her new home.
She's been great at navigating a busy household, including frequent visits from nurses, physical therapists, and even a steady stream of contractors during a home renovation. She's accepting of visitors, curious about children without being overly excitable, and isn't a jumper.
Once she feels comfortable, Poppy has become more affectionate. She loves curling up on the couch for snuggles, sleeps in bed with her foster family, and is happiest when she's close to her favorite people. Her foster mom says one of her favorite things is watching Poppy gently rest her head on her husband’s knee while relaxing together.
Outdoors is where Poppy's playful side really shines. She’s an active dog who loves walks and exploring new places, happily weaving through the brush, investigating every interesting scent, and chasing squirrels up trees. At home, she'll proudly bring you a tennis ball over and over again for an endless game of fetch, and she enjoys chewing on bones and sturdy toys. She’s been living in a more rural setting and would love an active family that enjoys spending time outside and will include her on walks, hikes, and adventures.
Poppy is still gaining confidence in new situations, so she'll need a patient family willing to give her some time to settle in. The reward is a sweet, loyal companion who forms deep bonds and wants nothing more than to be close to the people and the dog companion she loves.
If you're looking for a gentle, affectionate dog who will thrive with a canine companion and blossom with love, patience, and adventure, Poppy may be the perfect addition to your family.

Estimated Weight: 49.4lbs
Gets Along With: Other dogs! Snookie has met cats in a foster home and while interested in them remained very calm. We are happy to discuss integration techniques with cats and kids with any potential adopters!
Special adoption considerations: Snookie is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites.
Read more about Snookie
Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!
Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. Check out this video of Snookie: https://youtube.com/shorts/i7PkPUSJJhc.
Snookie is Looking For: Hi there! I'm Snookie, and I'm ready to leave my past behind and start the happiest chapter of my life. Lucky Dog volunteers found me on the streets of Puerto Rico shortly after I welcomed four brand-new puppies into the world. I did my best to be a good mama despite having so little. Now that my babies Sugar, Scottie, Selene, and Sunny are safe and off to get their own homes, it's finally my turn to find a family of my own and experience all the love and comfort I've always deserved.
I'm dreaming of a home filled with soft beds for cozy naps, lots of cuddles from my favorite people, and plenty of yummy treats (I think I've earned a few!). While I don't need to live with another dog, I'd love opportunities to make canine friends on walks, at the park, or during fun playdates. I enjoy being social and would be thrilled to have buddies to romp around with from time to time. Most of all, I'm looking for a family who will show me that I'll never have to worry about where my next meal, nap, or hug is coming from again. I've already been through so much, but my heart is still full of love. All I need now is someone to give me the fresh start I've been waiting for—and I promise to fill your home with gratitude, happy tail wags, and endless cuddles.
What My Foster Says About Me: Snookie is an absolute pleasure to have around! She's laid-back and easy going. She's wonderful on walks, even around busy crowds of people and dogs in the city. She gets along well with other dogs, and has excellent manners. She's happy lounging around the house or looking out the window while she waits for you to return. While she enjoys having other dogs around, she'd also be perfectly happy as your one and only. She's just a sweet, easygoing girl who makes being her foster a joy!

And to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. Oh, and I should probably take a puppy obedience class or two so I can show you how smart I am. Hopefully my forever family is coming for me soon! What My Foster Says About Me: Tyna is the perfect mix of sweet and playful. She loves cuddles and naps just as much as playtime. She’s already learning “sit,” working on potty training and getting used to walking on a leash. She is such a confident little puppy and will make a great addition to any home.
Due to this puppy’s young age, she/he has not yet been spayed or neutered. As part of the adoption contract, it will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that this is done no later than November 19, 2026. There are NO EXCEPTIONS and NO EXTENSIONS to this date. A non-refundable spay/neuter deposit will be collected if you would like Lucky Dog to pay for this animal to be spayed/neutered at one of our low cost partner vets.

26. Cooper
Young · Male · Shepherd / Plott Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 21 mi from Waldorf

COOPER NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Cooper Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and Plott hound mix
Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of July 2026 SEX: Male
Approximate Weight: 50 lbs
Gets Along With: Other dogs! Cooper is currently living in a foster with cats and is doing well. We haven't seen him with kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: DC area foster
Read more about Cooper
Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think this pup would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure they can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.
What My Foster Says About Me: Cooper is a well-mannered guy who’s already showing off lots of great qualities! He rides nicely in the car, walks beautifully on a leash with minimal pulling, and greets other dogs on walks without any issues. He settles into his crate without a fuss and sleeps quietly through the night. He’s also been wonderfully quiet at home—not a bark out of him so far!
Cooper isn’t one to climb on furniture or get into everything, though he does like to keep moving and explore his surroundings. He’s still learning how to fully relax and get cozy in a dog bed, but he absolutely knows how to enjoy some affection! His favorite thing might just be getting head rubs and scratches behind his ears.
The way to Cooper’s heart? Treats! He loves food rewards, especially Himalayan cheese chews and treat-filled Kongs. He’s even a champ at bath time, staying calm and cooperative. He has mastered "sit," and is learning how to play fetch.
Cooper is currently living with cats and doing well, too! He’s proving to be a lovely houseguest with lots of wonderful qualities to offer his future family.

Cooper is Looking For: His forever home! Cooper is a sato - a dog from Puerto Rico. He is in his prime as a young dog and hasn't seen enough of the world - he's eager to get his own humans for sniffy walks and romps in parks and all the adventures his family can dream up. Making pup pals along the way would be great, as would going to dog school so he can show how super smart he is. Most of all, though, he wants to know where he belongs, to be safe and loved all his days. In exchange ee promises so much love and loyalty. What do you say? Can you see this handsome brindle boy by your side?
Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog .

MOE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Moe Best Guess for Breed: Lab and Bulldog mix
Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of April 2026 SEX: Male
Approximate Weight: 55 lbs
Read more about Moe
Gets Along With: Other dogs! We have tested Moe with some of the cats at the shelter, and he did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that Moe could live with a cat, he has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack! We haven't seen them with kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: DC area foster
Special adoption considerations: Moe is a truly Lucky Dog.
Moe is Looking For:
Moe is a handsome pup with a bright white coat and adorable spots on his ears that make him stand out from the crowd. This happy-go-lucky boy is known for his friendly personality and always seems ready to greet new friends with a wagging tail and a smile.
Moe enjoys spending time with people and has a gentle, easygoing nature that makes him a wonderful companion. He walks nicely on a leash, making neighborhood strolls and outdoor adventures a pleasure. Whether he's exploring the world by your side or relaxing at home after a walk, Moe is happiest when he's with his favorite humans.
If you're looking for a loyal, loving dog with a cheerful spirit and great manners, Moe may be the perfect addition to your family. Come meet this sweet boy and see if he's the missing piece you've been searching for!

28. Otis
Adult · Male · Chihuahua / Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 20 mi from Waldorf

Meet Otis. This sweet little Chihuahua Mix was rescued alongside his buddy Clara Belle after spending much of his life as an outdoor dog in rural South Carolina. Thankfully, his owners surrendered him to a local shelter, giving him the opportunity for the safe, loving life he deserves.
For the past few months, Otis has been living as an indoor dog in foster care with multiple dogs and cats. He's gentle and easygoing with other dogs and adores the cats. He’s a live-and-let-live kind of pup and such a sweet soul.
Read more about Otis
Otis is a naturally social Chihuahua who genuinely loves people. Whether he's greeting visitors at home or charming the staff at the vet's office, he's all tail wags and happy energy. He's house-trained and has excellent house manners. Rather than using a crate, if his foster mom is going for longer periods of time, she leaves her pups in a laundry room equipped with a video camera, comfy beds, toys, water bowls, and all the comforts of home. Like many dogs, he's a little anxious when left alone, but he takes comfort in the company of his canine companions and will settle down.
While Otis walks nicely on leash, he's not looking to be your jogging partner. He prefers leisurely strolls and can be a little timid in unfamiliar environments. His adopters should be mindful that he may be a flight risk during the adjustment period. Once he's comfortable, though, he becomes deeply attached to his people and wants nothing more than to be close to them.
Like many rescue dogs, Otis needs a little time to build trust and gain confidence. Once he feels safe, his sweet, affectionate personality truly shines. He loves all the comforts of home - soft beds, cozy blankets, and warm laps, but he also enjoys road trips and going places with his people. He's a devoted little companion who considers himself a professional lap dog and is happiest curled up next to his favorite person.
His foster mom feels he's pretty perfect:
"He's just the sweetest and my special little guy. He always looks like he has a grin on his face. He loves travel and people-watch, and makes tons of friends wherever he goes. He has more of a thin frame and is not a rough-and-tumble dog. He's definitely gotten more confident since he's been here and will run with the pack and bark at a passing stranger with my other two instigators, but left on his own, he's a pretty laid-back boy."
Note: When Otis came into our care, he tested positive for heartworm and was overdue for a dental. Since then, he's completed heartworm treatment, had a dental, and is now up to date on all veterinary care.
If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate companion who will reward your patience with unwavering loyalty and love, Otis may be the perfect match.

Mr. Huckleberry is Looking For: Hi! The five of us - Ms. Samira, Mr. Robbie, Ms. Mel, Ms. Javadi, and Mr. Huckleberry - have loved our time in the puppy pile with our mama Dana, but we are each ready to pack our bags and find our very own forever home!
What My Foster Says About Me: Mr. Huckleberry is an absolute sweetheart with a bouncy, joyful personality! While he was a little shy when he first arrived, he warmed up quickly and has proven himself to be a cuddly, affectionate lovebug who loves being around his people. Mr. Huckleberry takes great cues from his canine foster siblings—he’s always ready to play with the ones who want to play. He loves his walks and happily bounces along with everyone else, stopping to sniff and take in the world around him. He’s engaged and eager to learn. After some playtime and exercise, he settles beautifully at home. He does a great job at night in his crate and settles in for a nap during the day. This smart boy already knows “sit” and is working on his recall, “drop it,” and “leave it.” He’s currently teething but has been a good boy about chewing his toys. He’s also been wonderful with the kids in his foster home and respectful of the resident cats. Don’t let his understated manner fool you at adoption events—once he’s comfortable, Mr. Huckleberry is playful, friendly, and full of personality! He’s the kind of dog who would love a family that can give him some playtime, walks, a cozy couch, and lots of love. Mr. Huckleberry is ready to find his forever family and will make an absolutely wonderful addition to the right home!

Bonnie is Looking For: Her forever home! Shelter staff say Bonnie has so much awesome young-dog energy and she's eager to get her own humans to burn it all off with - long sniffy walks, lots of romps, lots of adventures - yes, please! Mental and physical enrichment like advanced agility training would be terrific too! Most of all, though, she wants to know she's safe and loved. In exchange she promises all the adoring gazes and happy tail wags and crazy expressions of love she's storing up, and loyal companionship for all her days. What do you say? Is Bonnie the active companion you see by your side on all your fun excursions? What My Dog Walker Says About Me: Bonnie is a bright, curious, affectionate dog who is ready to discover the world with her person! She has an incredible amount of potential and would thrive with an active adopter who wants a dog to adventure, learn, and have fun with.
Bonnie approaches new experiences with an open mind and a wonderful sense of curiosity. On a recent 1.5-hour adventure through busy H Street and Capitol Hill, she encountered people, children, rollerblades, strollers, bikes, motorcycles, Halloween decorations, and other dogs. Her response was essentially, “What’s that? Let’s investigate!” She handled the busy city environment beautifully, including calmly moving aside to watch a motorcycle pass and meeting other dogs appropriately on leash.
She is smart, eager to please, and a quick learner. Bonnie picked up “sit” and a cute head tilt within minutes, and during her walk she regularly checked in with her handler and responded well to guidance. She often works happily without treats simply because she enjoys interacting with her person. She is currently working on polite greetings and coming when called, and she is already showing great progress with jumping.
Bonnie has energy to spare and will do best with people who enjoy giving their dog plenty of physical and mental outlets. She would be an especially great match for someone interested in hiking, long walks, dog sports, training, or other adventures. When she gets the exercise, enrichment, and social opportunities she needs, she has shown that she can settle in and focus beautifully. She enjoys playing with other dogs and is doing well in boarding, where staff describe her as having good energy and playing nicely with her canine friends.
Like any dog, Bonnie has a few things she is still working through. She can pull when she gets excited, and she may occasionally get overwhelmed if she is under-exercised or under-stimulated for too long. She has also shown some nervousness around enclosed spaces and may have had more crate time than she would have liked in the past. Her caregivers are working on building positive associations with those spaces, and she does best when given patience, choice, and positive reinforcement.
What makes Bonnie especially exciting is how much she wants to engage with her person. She is sensitive, intelligent, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. Give her something to do, somewhere to go, and a person willing to explore alongside her, and Bonnie is likely to be an incredible companion.
Bonnie's ideal home is with an active person or family who wants to include their dog in life's adventures and continue building her confidence and skills. If you're looking for a smart, fun-loving dog with tons of potential, Bonnie might be your girl!

Bringing a dog home to your cat
Tell the rescue about your cat: their age and how they react to dogs. A dog who has lived calmly with one cat may still want to chase a cat that runs.
Introduce them slowly. Keep them apart for the first few days and swap bedding so they get used to each other's scent, then let them meet with the dog on a leash, rewarding calm behavior.
Make sure the cat can always get somewhere the dog can't reach, like a high shelf or a room behind a baby gate, and keep the litter box and cat food out of the dog's way.
