1. Milo 2

Adult · Male · Australian Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 31 mi from Grand Rapids

Meet Milo! Milo is a 4-year-old boy looking for a new home where he can have plenty of room to play, explore, and, most importantly, show off his frisbee skills! Milo loves treats, enjoys car rides, and absolutely loves the beach. He’ll even venture into the water up to his shoulders! He also knows several commands, including sit, roll over, and lay down. Although here at the shelter he has just been doing sit and jump Milo is housebroken and kennel trained. He does well for baths and brushing, and he’s even good at the vet! He has a funny little habit of carrying shoes around the house, but don’t worry… he doesn’t chew them.

Read more about Milo 2

He has also been known to counter surf when there’s food involved, so you may want to keep those snacks out of reach! On walks, Milo does well on leash but can pull when he spots another dog. He has previously lived with two other dogs, but he has shown some food-related aggression toward another dog, so feeding separately and a proper meet-and-greet with any potential canine siblings would be important.Milo previously lived with a fenced yard and figured out he could jump it. Because of his escape-artist tendencies, his future family will need to be extra mindful about keeping him safely contained. Most importantly, Milo needs a home without small children.Milo has so many great qualities packed into one handsome guy. He’s playful, smart, housebroken, loves adventures, and is ready to find a family who understands his needs and will love him for exactly who he is. ❤️Interested in adopting? 10. Lua

Adult · Female · Anatolian Shepherd (short coat) · 79 mi from Grand Rapids

Who wants to adopt Lua who thinks taking naps are her job?Lua is a 3yo (estimated) Anatolian Shepherd @ 73 lbs who is spayed, UTD on vaccines, fully vetted, and completely housetrained. She has been an absolute joy to have in our family. She is very friendly, quiet (rarely barks), calm, and easy going. She does well in the crate and prefers it when left alone and sometimes when she just wants to chill in it. She loves naps and bedtime and sleeps like it’s her job! She likes chew toys and treats and giving love licks to anyone willing to accept. Lua LOVES toys and plays fetch with herself or anyone wanting to join in.

Read more about Lua

She knows “sit” and is working on other commands. She is doing well on the leash and loves to sniff her way around the neighborhood as we walk. She does much better in the car now that she’s more familiar with riding and on her last trip to the vet sat quietly looking out the window. We don’t have other pets, but she did well in playgroup at the shelter and recently at another foster’s home with medium and large dogs. She very much enjoyed playing and spending time with them. She enjoys wandering around the yard so a fenced yard is needed. Lua is an amazing dog who will make a wonderful, calm, loyal family member. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $300.00. If you would like more information about Lua, please email us at projecthoperescue@gmail.com. To apply to adopt, please visit our website at www.projecthoperescue.org.

11. Malibu

Young · Female · Great Pyrenees · 31 mi from Grand Rapids

Meet Malibu, our sweet, shy girl who deserves a fresh start!Malibu is a 2½-year-old Great Pyrenees with a gentle soul and a timid personality. Right now, the world seems a little overwhelming to her, and she’s still trying to figure out who she can trust. But underneath that shy exterior is a sweet girl who just needs someone willing to give her the time, patience, and love she deserves.Unfortunately, she also came to us with an injury on one of her hind legs. She’s not putting much weight on it, and from the looks of things, we’re wondering if she may have spent time tied up. We can’t say for certain what happened.

Read more about Malibu

She’ll be heading to the vet to have her leg examined so we can figure out what’s going on and get her feeling better.Being only 2½ years old, Malibu still has plenty of learning and growing to do! She’s reportedly good with kids and other dogs, although she hasn’t been around cats. She’s has been known to chew on things. She’s also a fan of toys, treats, and even bath time!Right now, our biggest priority is making sure Malibu is comfortable, healthy, and knows she’s safe. We don’t know everything about her past, and we wish she could tell us what she’s been through. But we do know that her past doesn’t have to define her future.Malibu deserves a home where she has room to stretch her legs, people who understand her breed, and most importantly, a family who won’t rush her as she learns to trust. She’s not the kind of dog who’s going to walk through the door and immediately show you her whole personality (at least so far she’s not). She’s going to need a little time, a little reassurance, and someone who sees the potential in the quiet girl standing in front of them.Interested in adopting? Meet Berg!Berg is just 1 year old, which means he’s got plenty of puppy energy packed into that body. He’s friendly, outgoing, and always ready for whatever is happening next. Walk? Yes. Playtime? Absolutely. Snacks? You now have his undivided attention. And when we say Berg is food motivated, we mean VERY food motivated. If there’s a treat involved, Berg is suddenly the most dedicated student you’ve ever met. He already knows how to sit and shake, and with his love of snacks, we think he’ll be a lot of fun to continue training.Berg seems to do well with other dogs and would love a home that can keep up with his energy and give him plenty of opportunities to play, explore, and learn.

13. Hippo

Adult · Male · American Bulldog / Mixed · 31 mi from Grand Rapids

Meet Jax, our handsome 3-year-old boy with a big personality, plenty of energy, and a serious love for belly rubs!Jax is an active guy who is always ready for playtime, walks, and adventures. He loves being around people and soaking up attention, and once the excitement settles down, he’s more than happy to roll over for some belly rubs and cuddles. One major bonus? Jax is completely house trained! He keeps his kennel clean and has had no accidents. He does get excited on walks and can be a strong puller, so he’ll need someone willing to continue working with him on his leash manners. With consistency and training, we think he has so much potential. When it comes to other dogs, Jax would do best with a female dog.

Read more about Hippo

A meet and greet would still be important to make sure everyone is comfortable and it’s a good match. In his previous home, Jax seemed to respond better to the male in the household. He can be a strong-willed boy, he likes women, he just does better when his women are confident, consistent, and comfortable setting boundaries. Jax is definitely the type who will figure out pretty quickly what he can get away with, so he needs someone who won’t let those puppy-dog eyes convince them that the rules suddenly don’t apply.Underneath that big personality is a sweet, affectionate boy who has so much love to give. Jax just needs the right person who understands him and can give him the structure, activity, and attention he needs to thrive. If you’re looking for a fun, loving companion with plenty of personality, Jax might just be your guy!Interested in adopting? 14. Rocky

Adult · Male · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 31 mi from Grand Rapids

Meet Rocky a 6-year-old Lab/Pit mix who is living proof that age is just a number when you are THIS EXCITED TO BE ALIVE. ❤️And before anyone says anything about his photos… we know. We tried. Rocky simply does not have time to stand still and pose when there are people to love, things to sniff, and approximately 47 reasons to wag his entire body. This guy wakes up every day absolutely THRILLED that the earth is still spinning and he gets to be here for it.Rocky is a super happy, high-energy guy who LOVES to play, especially fetch, and loves attention just as much. He knows sit and lay, is housebroken, and can be left home for a normal workday without destroying the place.

Read more about Rocky

He isn’t kennel trained, but he’s used to having free roam of the house. He has lived with kids before and did well with them, although with his energy and enthusiasm, kids who can handle his play style may be the best fit. He’s lived with another dog and has done well with cats, too, although he can play a little rough.Rocky does pull on leash and isn’t leash trained yet, so he’ll need someone strong enough to handle him and willing to work with him, otherwise he will be taking you for a walk. A fenced-in yard would be a HUGE plus so he can safely get those zoomies out. He can also be nervous in the car and may cry a little… presumably because sitting calmly while the world goes by is simply not Rocky’s brand. At 6 years old, Rocky may technically be a grown man, but nobody has informed Rocky of this. He’s goofy, energetic, affectionate, playful, and just so ridiculously happy to be on this earth that he can barely stand it.If you want a dog who will make you laugh, keep you moving, play fetch until your arm falls off, and greet life like it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him… you need to meet Rocky. ❤️Interested in adopting? Adopting a large dog in Grand Rapids

Large dogs need room to stretch out and plenty of exercise: at least one good walk a day, and a secure yard is a bonus. Check your lease too, as some landlords limit the size or breed of dog.

Start training from day one. A big dog who walks nicely on a leash and doesn't jump up is a pleasure to live with, and many rescues can recommend a local trainer.
