Ivory is one of the best dogs I’ve come across, she’s the best snuggle buddy and loves to snuggle up with you on the couch, she loves to go on walks and always up for an adventure, she’s completely house broke, loves her crate, loves other dogs and would love a play mate that can help show her around her new home. 13. Mabel
Adult (6 years) · Female · Redbone Coonhound / Mixed (short coat) · 19 mi from Florissant

Mabel is a soft and gentle soul. She is not your typical hound. She is not exuberant or naughty. She is not the class clown. Instead, Mabel is a wallflower, trying her hardest to bloom.
Mabel was originally living as a stray in southern Missouri, periodically showing up on local farms. After months on the run, someone was able to catch her and she was taken in by a kind family. Mabel retreated to their basement, where she stayed for the next 2 years, interacting with them minimally. While they loved her very much, they knew she deserved more than they could give her and they reached out to us.
Read more about Mabel
Mabel currently lives in a home with two other dogs and two young children. It's pretty clear that Mabel has no idea how to be a loved member of the family, though her foster home is working diligently on teaching her. If left to her own devices, Mabel will spend all of her time alone. Her foster family is slowly encouraging Mabel to spend time near everyone else, though it will not happen overnight. Mabel has learned that solitude is safety, so she has a lot of new experiences ahead of her. She does enjoy gentle pets, kind voices and walks (it's when she's her most confident self). She has started wagging her tail more and more, and likes lifting up her paw to ask for pets. She is potty trained and crate trained, though she has never destroyed anything when left out alone. While Mabel is around 70 pounds currently, she has quite a bit to lose and is working hard on slimming down.
Her ideal family would be someone with a quiet home and a bucket full of patience. She'd thrive with someone who will continue to gently push her to be part of the family and not let her isolate one hundred percent of the time. She enjoys the company of other calm dogs and would likely do well with cats. She's gentle with the kids in her foster home, and would do fine with other respectful kiddos. A fenced in yard would be a huge plus, and she'd love a family who will take her on regular walks.
She may take some work, but the reward will be worth it.

14. Raylan
Adult (10 years) · Male · German Shepherd Dog / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat) · 22 mi from Florissant

This sweet boy was adopted from us as a puppy in 2016 and spent his entire life with a family. Sadly, we were recently notified that he was found in a known dumping area, where residents caught him on camera at night being chased by coyotes. Thankfully, a wonderful person stepped in to save him and immediately contacted us because his microchip was still registered with our rescue. We went and got him right away, and he has been resting and doing wonderfully in his foster home! We contacted his original adopter, who let us know they could no longer care for him and did not want him back. And that's okay, because we made Raylan a promise: His next family will be his FOREVER family!

15. Honeysuckle
Puppy (5 months 5 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 19 mi from Florissant

Honeysuckle has had a rough start in life. She was a stray who was picked up by animal control. She will need a patient family to continue her progress
Honey is approximately 6 months old. While she’s still wary of situations, food will overcome her fear. She’s very food motivated and will sit in your lap if she thinks she can look pitiful enough for you to give her a bite
She’s still unsure in new situations. She’s hasn’t had much socialization.
Honey will require a securely fenced yard. Another confident dog in the home is required to help her figure out how to be a dog

Honey has not been crate trained but she is housebroken and is fine to leave in the house. She doesn’t chew or destroy anything but if you leave a plate of food unattended it won’t be there when you get back!

16. Margarita
Adult · Female · Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 22 mi from Florissant

Margarita is a sweet, shy cautious introverted young lady who is full of joy and love once she is settled and trust you.
We are unsure of her history as she came to rescue from someone who had just gotten her from another situation.
She doesnt like loud noises or fast sudden movements, and will take a while to warm up to people. Once she does accept you she likes to play and get loves. She Loves Loves LOVES food and treats.
She is more comfortable and happy with dogs her size then people. She does ok with cats, she likes to try and play chase with them, so if the cat is open to 4 legged games. Her current bestie is a poddle mix and they run and play it, wrestle with each other, use the house and yard as a race track, steal toys from each other and generally just bring joy and mayhem together.
She does great in the car but is slow to learn the leash, outside her space is a big scary place so patience and a fully fenced in yard is a must.

20. Brent
Adult (9 months) · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 19 mi from Florissant

This is Brent and he's exactly who you think he is based on his name. Brent is an all-American dude with a love for football, beer and finance (probably). Brent is blissfully clueless that his two braincells are working overtime, and that's exactly how he likes it.
Brent originally came into the local animal control as a stray and quickly became a volunteer favorite. As time went on, Brent became more and more stressed and landed himself on the euthanasia list. Luckily for him, he had plenty of people who adored him and advocated for him. He caught his fosters eye and the rest is history.
Read more about Brent
Brent currently lives in a foster home with two female dogs and two young children. We think he'd love a dog to play with, but his canine foster siblings aren't the playing type, so he's great at coexisting with them. He's loving with his human foster siblings, and absolutely ADORES cuddling. If it was up to Brent, he'd spend his whole life snuggling with his people. Brent is a happy guy and exudes joy.
Brent can usually be found playing with toys, pretending he's a beagle and looking for food, or snuggling with his foster family. He knows "sit", "lay down" and is potty and crate trained (though admittedly he is not a fan of being crated long periods). Brent very much enjoys walks and would love to explore the outdoors with his new family. Brent has never met a stranger he didn't like (though periodically they've wished he was less enthusiastic about meeting them).
In Brent's ideal home, he'd have a fenced-in yard, be allowed on the furniture (see: cuddling), have parents that are home more than not, have someone who enjoys daily walks and have a family who is ok continuing his training. He'd be happy with or without another dog and with or without kids.
Whoever ends up with his guy is one lucky family.
Please note that Brent has recently been through heartworm treatment. He has to be kept on restricted activity until November 20 (which basically just means he has to keep his heartrate down). His foster mom is more than happy to tell you more about what this requires!

Meet Teddy, a very sweet and loving, 2 year old Australian Shepherd who has never met a stranger. Unfortunately his owner can no longer keep him because he works too many hours and Teddy is crated more than the breed should be. He is great with other dogs and loves going to the dog park. He is potty trained, neutered, and up to date on shots.
Because Teddy is an Australian Shepherd, he would do best with an active family and a fenced yard.

Adult (1 year 7 months) · Male · Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 19 mi from Florissant

Meet Pablo!
Pablo is a very sweet Boxer mix who has already come a long way. He was rescued from a heartbreaking situation with more than 190 dogs, and his skin was in rough shape. Thankfully, with love and care, his skin has cleared up beautifully!
Pablo is very shy, especially in new situations, and he may not be the dog who immediately wins you over when you first meet him. But underneath that nervous exterior is a gentle, loving boy just waiting to feel safe.

Pablo needs an adopter with an extra-big heart, patience, and a willingness to let him blossom at his own pace. He would do best in a calm home with another friendly dog to help show him the ropes and give him confidence.
Pablo may take a little time to come out of his shell, but watching him learn to trust and love is going to be incredibly rewarding. He loves to give kisses as he starts to feel

26. Terri
Adult (2 years 1 month) · Female · Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 19 mi from Florissant

Are you looking for a dog you can take everywhere—work, park, patio, kids' sports games? Have an active home with lots of people coming and going? Terri is your girl!
She is a social butterfly! Terri is not a barker so if you have an active lifestyle but live in an apartment/condo so can she.
Terri does like to chase the squirrels over the fence or say hello to those walking by so would need a 5 or 6 foot fenced in back yard.
Terri loves to chew—plush toys, shoes, rubber toys, bones. She loves them all.

Adopting a dog in Florissant
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
