1. Brodie

Young · Male · Beagle / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

How handsome is Brodie. He has such great coloring and his eyes are beautiful. He has short hair and long legs for a beagle mix. Brodie is about 2 yrs old and 30 lbs. Brodie is doing good on a leash when he goes for walks. He will pull in the beginning but settles quick and enjoys the rest of the walk. Brodie is a people dog and loves to be with people and given any chance he can get, he will get in your lap to watch tv and just relax. He does love outside time too where he can run and play fetch in the yard. He is very good, he will even bring the ball back to you. Brodie has been around several different dogs of all sizes.

Read more about Brodie

He tries to interact with them and they usually ignore him. I think he would love to find a friend that wants to play with him but also he would be great as an only dog. He has not been around cats so we are not sure how he would be with them. Brodie is housebroken as long as he stays on a schedule, just like any othe dog. He is young so he does have puppy in him. He has shredded a few toys but nothing else during his play time. Just like any beagle, they will run given the opportunity, so a home where no small kids can open the door and he can run out is best for him. Brodie is very energetic and would benefit from a structured lifestyle or formal training to help him to curtail his high energypersonality. He is just a playful boy who would love an active family and a largeyard to run around. This boy would get along with any dog, He always has asmile on his face!He wants to be everyone’s friend Right now he jumps upon everyone to say “Hi, Here I am”. He is so sweet and friendly. We areworking on his manners and appropriate greetings. He is very smart. Learned“sit” and “down” in just a few days.

2. Stellaluna

Puppy · Female · Whippet / Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Meet this sweet little girl! At about 5 months old and and only 15 pounds, we feel she may be a Whippet–Lab mix, though her breed is a guess. 4. Rollo

Young · Male · Poodle (Standard) / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Hi! My name is Rollo and I am looking for a forever home! I was picked up as a stray by animal control and taken to a scary place called a shelter where, after no one came to claim me, I was about to be put on something bad called “the list.” Fortunately for me, BCAA saw me and said they would help me… yeah! I appear to be a Standard Poodle mix— but whatever I am, my foster mom thinks I’m one handsome dude! I had to be shaved down when I first arrived because my coat was in quite a hot mess, but just wait until all that fluffy hair grows back and it's already started.I’m a little over 50 pounds and about 18 months old.

Read more about Rollo

I’m still very much a young, energetic guy and I love being out and about. My enthusiasm can be a little overwhelming for smaller dogs, so I would do best with a dog who enjoys my playful energy and can keep up with me. But when it’s just me and my people, I’m a total cuddle bug and absolutely love attention. I’ve shown some interest in cats, although I haven’t been aggressive toward them. I’m also crate trained and have done really well in my crate without accidents or destroying my bedding. That said, I’d much rather be hanging out with you and will definitely let you know if I hear or see you and think I’m missing out!I’m pretty good on leash, although I can pull a little when I get excited about all the fun happening around me. I’m a happy, affectionate boy with plenty of personality, and I’m ready to find a family who will give me the love, attention, exercise, and guidance I need to continue growing into the best version of myself. If you’d like to learn more about me — or even better, meet me — please fill out an application at BCAAofNJ.org.

5. Beau

Young · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Beau is a handsome 1-year-old Lab mix weighing about 55 pounds, although he’s a little on the skinny side and is working toward his goal weight of around 60 pounds. We think he may have some Hound or even Great Dane mixed in — and those long legs, slender build, and gorgeous floppy ears certainly make us wonder! Beau has the most beautiful jet-black coat and an even more beautiful personality. This boy has never met a stranger! He absolutely loves people and is always ready for pets, attention, and plenty of love. He’s great with kids, although because he doesn’t realize he’s a big boy and not a lap dog, he may be a little too much for very small children.Beau is wonderful with other dogs 30 pounds and up.

Read more about Beau

He loves running around the yard and playing with his dog friends, but he’s also respectful when another dog isn’t interested in playing. He’d love a home where he can have some room to run and enjoy his daily exercise. On leash, Beau is definitely a strong boy! He’ll need someone willing to continue working on his leash manners, and an easy-walk harness would be a great tool to help him learn. Once he gets his exercise, though, he’s not a high-energy dog and is perfectly happy to hang out with his people.Beau is also a great car rider and hops right in when it’s time to go! He knows sit and down, loves catching treats in the air, and thinks chasing a ball is pretty much the best thing ever. He does jump up to say hello, but he is very gentle about it — he’s just a big, goofy puppy who hasn’t quite realized how big he is yet! Beau is the kind of dog who will make you smile every day. He’s affectionate, friendly, playful, and eager to learn. He just needs a family who will give him some daily exercise, continue his training, and let him be the lovable goofball he is. If you’re looking for a big, goofy, incredibly friendly boy who thinks everyone is his new best friend, Beau might be your guy! Bcaaofnj.org

8. Sheba

Young · Female · Beagle / Hound / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Meet Sheba! This sweet Beagle mix is about 2 years old and weighs around 33 pounds. And after almost two months in her foster home, we are so happy to say that Sheba has completely blossomed! When Sheba first came to us after spending more than a year in a shelter, she was incredibly scared and shut down. But with patience, love, and the safety of a foster home, she has discovered that life can actually be pretty wonderful. And now we’re getting to see the playful, affectionate, silly girl who was hiding underneath all that fear. Sheba is fully house trained and fully crate trained, and she is an incredibly well-behaved girl inside the house.

Read more about Sheba

She isn’t a high-energy dog, but she absolutely loves having time to play. Give her some toys and she will happily entertain herself by throwing them in the air, rolling around with them, or settling down with a good bone. Her favorite activity, though, might be playing with other dogs! She loves to play chase and roughhouse with canine friends who enjoy the same kind of play. Sheba has excellent doggy manners and social cues and does well with dogs of all sizes. A playful dog would be a wonderful match for her.She has also discovered that walks are pretty awesome! She loves getting out and sniffing all the new smells along the way. She does pull a little on leash, but her foster is working with her and she is continuing to improve. She currently requires a securely fenced yard because she is not comfortable pottying while on leash.Inside, Sheba is such an easy companion. She loves curling up on the couch and being right beside her foster. She isn’t a big barker and will generally only speak up if someone knocks on the door or another dog starts barking. She also sleeps peacefully and is perfectly happy relaxing with her people.Sheba is still a little nervous when someone reaches toward her unexpectedly, so she does best with people who understand that she may need a little time to warm up. She is especially good with kids who know to take things slowly with her at first. In fact, Sheba has even surprised some of the kids she has met at adoption events by giving them a sweet little kiss. She may still be nervous at busy adoption events, but that is not the real Sheba. Her true personality comes shining through when she is comfortable — especially when she is in a fenced yard playing with other dogs, tossing around her toys, or snuggling next to her foster. Her floppy ears, curly tail, playful personality, and sweet nature make her impossible not to love. Sheba has filled out beautifully and is now at a healthy weight, and watching her transformation over the past two months has been incredible. She went from a frightened, shut-down dog to a playful, affectionate girl who loves toys, walks, dogs, cuddles, and simply being near her people. She just needs someone who will continue to give her the patience and understanding that have helped her blossom. In return, you’ll get a sweet, funny, playful companion who will show you more of her personality every day. 12. Bolo

Young · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Meet Bolo “Bo” Bolo, affectionately known as Bo, is a 55-pound mixed-breed boy who is about 3 years old—and he has one incredible story of survival.Bo spent multiple weeks in a local high-kill shelter, where he continued to lose weight and grow weaker. By the time he left the shelter with a foster, he was in such poor body condition and was so lethargic that he was taken straight to the veterinarian. He was critically anemic and needed an immediate blood transfusion. The transfusion gave him a temporary boost, but sadly, Bo began declining again. Even when he was so weak that he could barely lift his head, he still found the strength to wag his tail whenever someone came near him.

Read more about Bolo

That little tail wag said everything about Bo—he wanted to live!He ultimately needed a second blood transfusion and spent months fighting his way back to health. Bo's immune system had been severely compromised after a long battle with Babesia. Thankfully, he has now tested negative, his bloodwork has returned to normal, and his body is getting stronger and stronger. He had been taking prednisone to help support his immune system and is now successfully being weaned off because he has been doing so well. If he experiences another condition that affects his immune system in the future, he may need another round of prednisone, but he has been stable for months with no issues. And now Bo is ready for the life he fought so hard to have. Bo is absolutely thrilled to be feeling good and discovering what it means to simply be a dog. He loves having adventures, being included in everyday life, and—perhaps most importantly—knowing that there will always be someone there to care for him.He is completely housebroken and crate trained. After spending so much of his life fending for himself, Bo still gets incredibly excited when food is served. He LOVES food and treats and is always happy to supervise anything happening in the kitchen!Bo is dog-friendly and cat-friendly. He mostly lives in his own happy little world, content to explore, relax, and stay close to his people. He peacefully coexists with the other animals in the home and generally doesn't pay much attention to them. Every once in a while, though, he gets a burst of playful energy and will happily roughhouse with his furry friends for a few minutes. He also does well in the car. In true Bo fashion, he likes to get in, hop into the driver's seat for a quick little toot of the horn, and then make his way to his spot where he settles down for the ride. Bo has spent far too much of his life simply trying to survive. Now, he wants what every dog deserves: a home, a family, a soft place to sleep, someone to love, and a place where he finally belongs. He has fought incredibly hard to get here. Now it's time for Bo to enjoy the life he fought so hard to have.If you're looking for a sweet companion who is ready to appreciate every single day with his people, Bo may be your boy. bcaaofnj.org

Puppy · Male · Border Terrier / Terrier / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Hi! My name is Leo, and I’m looking for a forever home where I can continue learning, playing, and being my silly little self! I was picked up as a stray by animal control and taken to a super scary place called a shelter. After my hold time was up, I was in danger of being placed on something very bad called “the list.” Luckily for me, BCAA said YES to helping me! Thank goodness, because the vet says I’m only about 5–6 months old, and I have my whole life ahead of me!I appear to be some type of scruffy terrier mix and weighed about 20 pounds when I first went to the vet. We think I’ll stay a medium-sized dog when I’m all grown up.I’m a sweet, playful guy who loves people, attention, treats, breakfast, dinner, and pretty much anything fun! I can still be a little skittish, especially when something is new or unfamiliar, but I’m settling in more every day.

My foster mom says I’m also getting very good at getting into EVERYTHING—which apparently is what puppies do! I absolutely love other dogs! I’ve gotten along with dogs of all sizes, and I especially love my little foster dog friend. I think having another confident, playful dog in my forever home could really help me come out of my shell and feel comfortable even faster. I’ve also shown no interest in cats so far. When I first arrived in foster, I had a couple of accidents in my crate, but once I figured out that there was a schedule and I’d be getting outside regularly, I caught on quickly and have been doing so much better! I’m also learning about this whole leash thing and doing pretty well—especially when treats are involved! I’m still a puppy, so I’ll need a family who is ready to keep teaching me, give me plenty of appropriate outlets for my energy, and help me build confidence as I grow.If you’re looking for a sweet, scruffy, playful puppy with a little bit of goofy mischief thrown in, Leo might just be your guy! They were found abandoned at a county dump site and brought to a shelter before making their way into foster care. 15. Onyx

Young · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mountain Cur / Mixed · 3 mi from Beverly

Onyx is about 1 year old and weighs 45 pounds, and he is absolutely gorgeous with his shiny black coat. We think he may be a Mountain Cur/Lab mix, but whatever his breed, there’s one thing we know for sure — this sweet boy has so much love to give. Unfortunately, Onyx has already been failed twice. He doesn’t understand why the people who were supposed to be his forever people didn’t stay. Because of that, he can be nervous around strangers, loud voices, and unfamiliar situations. He needs time to trust and feel safe, but once he does, you get to see the incredible dog underneath that uncertainty. And his foster mom says that when Onyx climbs into bed with you, his whole world changes.

Read more about Onyx

He melts into the blankets, lets his guard down, and becomes an absolute LOVE. He adores the couch, loves sleeping in bed with his person, and just wants to be close to someone he trusts.Onyx also LOVES cats and does not chase them! He is potty trained and is even learning to pace when he needs to go outside. He willingly goes out to potty, although he is still convinced the doggy door may be a terrifying portal to another dimension. Onyx is a sensitive boy who needs a quiet, patient home. Because loud environments make him nervous, we don’t think a home with children would be the right fit for him. His dream home would have someone who is home often, a fenced yard, and another friendly dog who can help show him that the world isn’t such a scary place. Most importantly, he needs someone who understands that a scared dog isn’t a bad dog — he just needs time to learn that he is finally safe. Please don’t choose Onyx because you feel sorry for him. Choose him because you’re willing to be the person who proves to him that people can stay. He doesn’t need someone to simply “give him a chance.” He needs someone who will celebrate the little victories, be patient through the hard days, and eventually look down at the dog sleeping peacefully beside them and realize that the scared boy they brought home has become their very best friend.Onyx has already been failed twice. We are determined that there will not be a third.Third time’s the charm, sweet boy. It has to be. If you think you could be the person Onyx has been waiting for, please apply at bcaaofnj.org.

How to adopt from Pooch Kaboose

Loyal and loving, dogs are social animals who thrive on being upstanding members of their families. Caring for a companion animal goes far beyond providing food, water and shelter. It takes research and careful planning to bring the right pet into your home, and to make sure your lifestyle is the right one for your pet. If there are young children in your home, a puppy may not be your best bet. You may want to consider adopting a medium-sized dog over five months of age. It is a good idea to draw up a schedule of who in the family will help with the care of your new dog, including walking, playing, feeding and grooming. Don’t forget to have your new friend spayed or neutered. Please fill out the required adoption form.

Adopting a dog in Beverly

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
