1. Bernie

Young (1 year) · Male · Poodle (unknown type) / Shih Tzu / Mixed (long coat) · 82 mi from Erie

Bernie is a 1-year-old, 14-pound mixed-breed pup, possibly with some Shih Tzu and Poodle in his family tree.

Bernie was found running in traffic, scared, neglected, and covered in painful mats that had clearly been growing for a very long time. The mats were so severe that he needed to be completely shaved down. It's obvious that life hadn't always been kind to him, yet Bernie has never let his past dim his spirit. From the moment he arrived in foster care, he showed everyone just how gentle, affectionate, and forgiving he truly is.

Read more about Bernie

Bernie absolutely adores people and forms strong bonds with those he loves. He is happiest when he's close to his foster mom and is the type of dog who wants to be wherever his people are. Whether he's following you from room to room, curling up nearby for a nap, or gently asking for pets, Bernie's favorite place is by your side. He is incredibly affectionate and always ready to share kisses with anyone willing to accept them. His loving nature makes it impossible not to fall in love with him.

This sweet boy gets along wonderfully with other dogs and enjoys having canine companions to play with. He loves romping around with his dog friends, but he's also perfectly content entertaining himself with toys when playtime is over. Bernie has a fun, playful side and often finds ways to keep himself busy while waiting for his next cuddle session.

Bernie has not yet been tested with children, but based on his gentle and easygoing personality, we do not anticipate any issues. He approaches life with a soft, loving demeanor and has shown himself to be a kind, patient dog.

Bernie is crate trained and walks on a leash. He is doing very well with house training when provided frequent opportunities to go outside and also uses pee pads. Because he was found as a stray and initially ran from people trying to help him get to safety, a secure, physically fenced yard is strongly preferred for his forever home. While Bernie has settled in beautifully in foster care, his adopters should understand the importance of taking extra precautions during the adjustment period to ensure he remains safe and secure. As with any newly adopted dog, accidents may happen as he adjusts to a new home and routine.

The wonderful thing about Bernie is that he is eager to learn. He is very food motivated and responds enthusiastically to positive reinforcement, making him an excellent candidate for continued training. Every day he gains a little more confidence and learns a little more about what it means to be a cherished family member.

As a non-shedding dog, Bernie will require regular grooming throughout his life. Since he likely went without proper grooming in the past, he is still getting used to the process, but he's making great progress. His future family will need to commit to routine grooming appointments to keep him healthy, comfortable, and looking handsome.

More than anything, Bernie deserves a family that will shower him with the love, patience, and attention he has been missing. After a difficult start, this happy little boy is ready to leave his past behind and begin the life he's always deserved. In return, Bernie will reward his family with endless loyalty, constant companionship, gentle kisses, and a heart overflowing with love. He has waited a long time for his happily-ever-after, and now he's ready to find it. ❤️

Bernie is neutered. up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm. His adoption fee is $550

3. Suki

Adult (2 years 11 months) · Female · Bichon Frise (long coat) · 82 mi from Erie

Meet Suki, a sweet little Bichon girl who is just beginning her journey of learning what it means to be a beloved family pet. After spending her life as a breeder dog, everything about pet life is new to her, and she is looking for a patient, understanding family that will allow her to blossom at her own pace.

Read more about Suki

Suki is a happy girl, even if she is still a bit shy. While she doesn't yet seek out affection or cuddles, she happily allows her foster family to pick her up and handle her. Her little wagging tail lets you know she is content and quietly enjoying the world around her. With time, consistency, and love, we know her confidence will continue to grow.

Because Suki has always lived with other dogs, she would do best in a home with another small, friendly dog. A canine companion will help show her the ropes and give her comfort as she learns about life in a home. She is already discovering the joys of toys, chewies, and treats, and she especially loves little snacks. While she may be hesitant at first, she will eventually take treats from your hand once she feels comfortable.

Suki is making progress every day. She knows what to do when she goes outside and can navigate stairs going up on her own. She is currently learning to go down stairs independently and continues to gain confidence with new experiences. She is not yet housetrained and has not learned leash walking, but both skills will come with patience, routine, and one-on-one guidance. Because she is not leash trained, Suki will require a securely fenced yard in her adoptive home.

Suki is respectful of cats and generally ignores them, aside from an occasional curious bark. She has recently been groomed and will need regular grooming appointments to keep her beautiful Bichon coat looking its best.

Every day brings a little more confidence and personality from this lovely girl. Suki is already showing us glimpses of the wonderful companion she's destined to become, and we believe she will truly thrive in a patient home that understands her past and celebrates her progress.

Suki is spayed, microchipped, up to date on core vaccinations, and negative for heartworm.

Adoption Fee: $500

If you're looking for a gentle soul to nurture and watch blossom, Suki may be the perfect addition to your family.

To help keep our dogs safe, we require a martingale collar at the time of adoption. If you don't already have one, Pixie Mamas has them available for $10.

4. Kenny

Adult (2 years) · Male · Poodle (Miniature) · 82 mi from Erie

Kenny is a 2-year-old, 14-pound Miniature Poodle with a gorgeous deep red coat and an even more beautiful personality. As a breeder release dog, Kenny may not have experienced life in a traditional home before, but you would never know it. From the moment he arrived in foster care, he settled in as though he had always been part of the family.

Read more about Kenny

Like many Poodles, Kenny is incredibly smart, loving, loyal, and adaptable. He quickly became his foster mom's little shadow, following her from room to room and often announcing his presence with the classic "poodle poke" of his nose against her leg. Kenny is a happy boy who absolutely thrives on attention and affection. Whether he's cuddling on the couch or simply keeping his favorite person company, he is happiest when he's close to those he loves.

Kenny gets along wonderfully with the other dogs in his foster home and enjoys snuggling up with his canine friends. He is also respectful of the resident cats, showing curiosity about their daily routines without causing any trouble. Gentle children would be a great match for Kenny as well.

He is doing an excellent job learning the ins and outs of living in a home. House training is still a work in progress but is coming along nicely, and he is making great strides with crate training too. With continued one-on-one guidance, he is sure to master both in no time. After all, he's poodle smart!

Kenny is not leash trained yet, so a securely fenced yard would be ideal while he continues building confidence and learning new skills. Given his intelligence and eagerness to please, we expect him to pick up leash walking quickly.

Kenny has been professionally groomed and looks absolutely stunning in his beautiful red coat. Like all Poodles, he will require regular grooming to keep him looking and feeling his best.

At the end of the day, Kenny is exactly what many people dream of in a companion: a sweet, loving lap dog who wants nothing more than a soft couch, a devoted family, and a forever home to call his own. ❤️

Kenny is neutered, up to date with core vaccines, microchipped, and tested neg. for heartworm. His adoption fee is $550.

To help keep our dogs safe, we require a martingale collar at the time of adoption. If you don't already have one, Pixie Mamas has them available for $10.

Meet Penny: a very good girl!Penny is a sweet girl who looks like a forever puppy but always acts like a responsible adult. She loves being side by side with her person but also settles well when she is alone. She is learning how to play for the first time in her life and loves being part of a family. Likes: lap naps, riding shotgun in the car, being groomed and having belly rubs. Dislikes: being confined. She does not like being in a crate. Nor do we work on a "first come first served" basis, but rather strive to find the best match for the personality of each dog.
As part of our adoption process, references both personal and veterinarian will be checked. Sadie's also requires a home visit before we adopt any of our dogs out; therefore we only adopt to our local WNY region. 7. Cash

Adult (2 years) · Male · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 100 mi from Erie

Hi, I’m Cash!

I’m a 2-year-old blue nose pitbull with plenty of energy, a big heart, and very little understanding of personal pillow space. If your head is on it, mine can fit next to yours. That’s just cuddle math.

I love walks, running around, and spending time with my people. But tell me it’s time to relax, and I’m happy to settle down. After my morning routine, I usually pencil in a nap. My schedule is flexible… unless we’re talking about snacks.

Speaking of snacks, I’m smart, food motivated, and eager to learn. You bring the treats; I’ll bring my best “Who, me? The good boy?” face.

Read more about Cash

I love having other dogs around—even the little Chihuahua in my foster home likes me! Cats, though, get me a little too excited, and I will chase them. A home without cats would be the best fit unless my adopters can commit to careful introductions, management, and training.

I rarely bark, but when I do, let’s just say you won’t need a notification on your phone.

Mostly, I’m a sweet, affectionate love bug who wants a kind home, some fun adventures, and a spot beside you.

Adoption is $250 which includes his spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccines, microchip and current monthly prevention. To fill out an application for this animal or a general application click HERE.

8. Honey

Adult (6 years 1 month) · Female · American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 99 mi from Erie

If you are looking for an incredibly sweet dog to add to your family, look no further. This 5 year old foster dog has easily won my heart over, and she'll do the same to yours. She is doing great with housetraining and crate training. I have left her unattended in the house and she does well given there's no yummy food on the counter. She loves toys, and usually has to grab one to take outside during potty/playtime. She loves to play fetch in the fenced in yard, but can easily jump over a 4ft fence, so I am asking for a 6 foot fence, or someone that loves outdoor activities. She loves curling up in a little ball on the couch or snuggling at bedtime.

Read more about Honey

She lives with another foster dog and does good. She's very receptive to commands, and does ok on the leash, but needs reinforced training to not pull. A special harness seems to greatly help with that! We do not know how she is with cats!!! If you would like to be considered to adopt this cute girl, please fill out our application at pawsandprayers.org, and I will be in touch after it has been reviewed!! Her adoption fee is $200, and includes her spay surgery, up to date vaccines, rabies, heartworm, flea and tick prevention, dewormer, microchip, and endless love from Sweet Honey!! in bed and doesn't make a peep all night long. She loves playing with toys, and will play fetch with a ball too. Dinner time is her favorite part of the day, and a nice nap on the couch is something she enjoys as well. She is almost potty trained, but still has pee accidents in the house if I'm not paying attention.. She is slowly warming up to being crated, but will still bark and get quite upset for the most part. I do sit near the crate with yummy treats, and when she quiets down, she gets a treat, which really works. ( I'll keep working on this....)

Please remember that adopting a smaller dog can be a 10-20 year commitment!! If you are interested in adopting Shivers, please go to pawsandprayers.org and fill out our non-obligatory application. Peanut is a 21 lb, 1.5yr old Doxie mix of playful and cuddly. He is happiest sharing time with his people. Whether he’s snuggling with his foster sister or practicing his leash skills, he’s learning how wonderful life with a loving family can be.

He’s doing very well with leash training, has almost mastered the stairs, and sleeps through the night! He’s great with dogs, cats, men, and women, travels well in the car, and does well at the vet. He has not been tested with children.

Peanut is still working on potty training and crate training. He wears his belly wrap comfortably, but he’s still learning to do his business outside. He can get a little jealous when sharing attention and will benefit from patient guidance as he continues learning.

11. Jelly

Young (7 months) · Male · Australian Shepherd / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat) · 100 mi from Erie

Meet Jelly—a little mix of this and that, with a whole lot of love!

Jelly is approximately 7 months old, weighs 20 pounds, and is said to be an Aussie/Doxie mix. His exact recipe may be a mystery, but the sweetness is undeniable!

He loves toys, wrestling with his foster sister, and snuggling up for kisses—which he happily returns. Loud noises can startle him, and being held and reassured helps him feel safe. He’s great with dogs, cats, men, and women, rides well in the car, and does well at the vet.

Read more about Jelly

Jelly needs a patient foster or adopter prepared for significant house-training challenges and anxiety with crating and separation. He needs more than a quick puppy refresher: a consistent routine, gentle guidance, and someone willing to help him work through these challenges. He wears a belly wrap comfortably, but he is not house-trained.

He’s also practicing leash walking and learning what’s appropriate to chew. Keep a chew toy nearby—sometimes this little guy needs help locating the approved merchandise! He has mastered the stairs, so there’s one accomplishment checked off his list. ✔️

Jelly has plenty of love to give. He needs someone who will celebrate his progress, support him through the hard parts, and help him feel secure.

I can be a little shy when we first meet, but give me a little time to get to know you, and you’ll discover just how affectionate I am! Wherever you go, I’ll be right there beside you. Snuggling is my specialty because I always want to be in “touch” with the people I love!

I’m housebroken and crate trained! The crate is okay, but if I had my choice, I’d much rather be curled up next to you.

I LOVE the great outdoors! There are so many wonderful smells for my nose to investigate, and I take my sniffing duties very seriously!

I enjoy my toys, chewing on a good bone, and, of course, I’m always happy when treats are involved!

️ I’m a good eater and an all-around easygoing little guy.

My foster mom has fallen head over heels in love with me. She says it’s really not hard to do! ❤️ But she also knows that I deserve a family of my very own, one who will love me, cherish me, and spoil me rotten for the rest of my days.

So, what do you say?

Could you be the one to give this little country boy his happily-ever-after?

I may be a little shy at first, but underneath that quiet exterior is a loyal, loving, snuggly little companion just waiting for someone to call his own.

13. Waffles

Young (1 year 6 months) · Male · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 99 mi from Erie

If you are in the market for a new amazing dog, look no further. This deliciously sweet boy is crate trained, house trained, potty trained, knows several commands such as sit, come, and down, and for sure would love to learn more if treats are involved. He's definitely a black lab (mix), because he has the webbed feet for swimming, but we don't even know if he's ever been able to swim!! Hint....Hint.... LOL Waffles can be a bit mouthy, and it likes he was never taught as a puppy, so we would love a kind, patient family that can guide him and teach him how to be better boy. So many great qualities though. He loves playing with toys and chasing balls, and we would be thrilled to find him a family that enjoys long walks in the neighborhood, or even an adventurous hike would be a blast for him. Adult (2 years 11 months) · Female · Corgi / Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie / Mixed (medium coat) · 99 mi from Erie

Bonnie is a 3 year old, 30 pound sweetheart that is ready to wiggle her cute little self into your heart and home. She loves giving kisses and spending time cuddling with her foster mom, and getting belly rubs. When it's nice outside, she enjoys relaxing in the sun, so a (physical) fenced in yard would be wonderful. Bonnie would love to be the queen of the house, as she can be dog selective, but if she had to choose, she'd pick a cute guy (dog) to be roommates with. We would love for Bonnie to go to an active family that loves getting out for hikes, or long walks in the neighborhood. She's an amazing girl, and deserves an amazing family.

15. Regina Red

Adult (7 years 8 months) · Female · Brittany (medium coat) · 92 mi from Erie

Regina AKA Reggie was born around February 27 2019 and weighs about 45 pounds. Reggie is with us because her human could no longer care for her. Reggie is an absolute doll and we all fell in love with her instantly. Reggie gets along well with other dogs, cats, and kids of all ages. She loves walks and is wonderful on leash. She is house trained and affectionate. Her favorite thing in the whole world is snacks/food and snuggling with her humans!

Some nuances that we've learned about Reggie in foster care:

Read more about Regina Red

*She is obedient and knows basic commands.
*Reggie seems to fear getting into cars. In order to have her jump into a car, we throw a treat onto the seat and she'll jump in the car to get the treat (sometimes takes some coaxing). Once she's in the car, she lays down and rides nicely.
*She walks beautifully on leash with no pulling. When I stop for a second, she comes running back to me and sits/pushes up against me. She's either seeking safety/comfort or was trained to do this, but we reinforce this good behavior by telling her "Good girl to place".
*Reggie will "likely" stay with you off leash, but we "play it safe" and leave her on leash as she is very interested in the deer, squirrels etc.
*Reggie does not and has never gone "potty" on walks. She holds it until she gets home. She's 100% housebroken and does her business only when running in her fenced in yard.
*She really really loves her treats and food and eats her meals too fast, so we feed her with a slow feeder bowl that slows her down and will go with her when adopted. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $450.00

Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.

Adult (9 years 6 months) · Male · Australian Shepherd (long coat) · 92 mi from Erie

Jax was born around April 15 2017 and weighs about 55 pounds. Jax is with us because his owner could no longer care for him. Jax rides well in the car and walks ok on a leash. Jax has been around children of all ages, cats, and dogs and does well with everyone. Jax has a lot of energy and is very smart! We will be looking for a home that can meet both his mental and physical exercise needs since his world is fast and fun! He is a smart boy and learned the dog door quickly, but for some reason he thought he had to BURST through it instead of walk. It's just how Jax rolls and he surely doesn't act his age. He has learned how to swim and LOVES it even though he is still a bit splashy with his front legs. He is a very funny boy. We've also discovered that he loves to play fetch and does bring the toy or ball back for you to throw again. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $450.00

18. Max

Adult (3 years 7 months) · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (long coat) · 82 mi from Erie

He's doing fantastic with leash training, and we were so impressed with how quickly he caught on. Max is also fully crate trained and settles in nicely.

Read more about Max

Max is making great progress with his housetraining, but it is still very much a work in progress. As a breeder release, living in a home is a completely new experience for him, and he's learning more every day. Since being neutered, we've seen noticeable improvement, and he continues to move in the right direction. That said, his future family should be prepared to continue his housetraining routine and understand that patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement will be important to help him succeed. With continued guidance, we have no doubt that Max will keep making excellent progress.

Max has an amazing disposition and loves everyone he meets. He's the perfect mix of playful and loving, and we know you'll fall head-over-heels for this adorable boy! ❤️

Max was recently professionally groomed and looks absolutely adorable. He will require regular grooming to keep his coat healthy, soft, and looking his best.

Max is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, flea treated, and dewormed.

His adoption fee is $475.

To help keep our dogs safe, we require a martingale collar at the time of adoption. If you don't already have one, Pixie Mamas has them available for $10.

19. Cj

Young (1 year) · Male · Australian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat) · 86 mi from Erie

Hi there! I’m CJ, and I’m looking for my forever family!

I’m an Australian Shepherd mix puppy with a big personality, lots of energy, and plenty of love to give! My favorite things include playing fetch, going for walks, enjoying car rides, and, of course, snuggling up with my favorite humans after a fun-filled day. I’m a happy, playful guy who loves being part of the action, but I’m just as happy soaking up affection from my people. ❤️

I’m a smart cookie, too! Since I’m food-motivated, learning new things is lots of fun. I already know

sit, paw, lie down, and high five!

Read more about Cj

I’m still working on my puppy manners, including walking nicely on a leash and keeping all four paws on the floor instead of jumping up to say hello. My foster parents remind me to “down,” and I’m trying my best to be a good listener. Hey, I’m still a kid, after all!

I also have a canine foster sister, and I think having a doggy friend is pretty great!

I’m looking for a family who will enjoy my playful spirit, help me continue learning, and give me plenty of opportunities for exercise, fun, and cuddles. If you’re looking for a clever, affectionate, adventure-loving companion who will keep you smiling, I might just be your guy!

Think we could be a perfect match?

Head over to

Love, CJ

21. Francine

Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 76 mi from Erie

Meet Francine!
Regal beauty or cartoon character? We’re still trying to decide.
Francine is a gorgeous 58 pound black Lab/retriever type girl with long legs, an extra long nose, enormous paws and some very distinctive features. Her foster family suspects there may be a little German Shepherd in there somewhere... although based on those legs, we haven't completely ruled out horse. Francine has been in her foster home for a couple weeks and more of her personality comes out every day. She is sweet, silly, playful and has quickly settled into life with her foster family. One of Francine’s absolute favorite activities is splashing in her water bowl. Drinking from it is apparently only part of its intended purpose. If she can get some of the water onto the kitchen floor in the process, even better. She is doing wonderfully with potty training and has had no trouble understanding that business belongs outside. She is also learning the ropes of crate training and making progress, although confinement isn't exactly her favorite thing yet. She’s a clever girl, so her foster family continues to work on making her crate a comfortable, positive place.
Francine loves chewing on her chew bones and especially loves playing with her foster brother, Zuul, a pittie. The two have become great playmates, and when she's finished romping around, Francine is perfectly happy to curl up on the couch alongside him. And then there's the Francine flop. She knows how to sit, but when affection is involved, sitting frequently turns into slowly sliding herself all the way down until she's sprawled on the floor waiting to be loved. Kitchen, living room, outside... location doesn't seem to matter. At 58 pounds, Francine is currently underweight and has some filling out to do. Between those big paws, long legs and lengthy frame, she's going to be a substantial girl once she reaches a healthy weight.

Read more about Francine

Francine is spayed, potty trained, dog friendly in her foster home and learning more about home life every day. She has plenty of puppy like playfulness wrapped up in one very long, very lovable and wonderfully goofy package.

If you're looking for a beautiful girl who can make you laugh, splash your kitchen floor, play hard and then flop down beside you, Francine might just be your girl.

If you are interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application at www.sadiesrescue.org Please keep in mind there are many factors to consider when choosing the right match for a dog, so an application cannot guarantee adoption.
Please only apply if you are serious about adopting as placing each foster dog in the best home takes time and effort by our volunteers.

22. Dolly

Adult (5 years 1 month) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 91 mi from Erie

Dolly here. I'm a 5yr old sweet pit mix girl. I am a small pocket pit of 35 pounds. Everyone says how cute I am. I was living on the streets, eating out of a dumpster when some kind people took me in. I was very thin. You could see all of my ribs! They gave me baths, fed me, and found me a place with Rose's Rescue. My foster mom thinks I had a home at some point, because I took to living in the house quickly. She doesn't know how I ended up on the streets, because I'm such a nice girl. I can't tell her all that I've been through. I'd rather forget all that and look forward to my new life. I wake up every morning ready for a new adventure. I can turn anything into a game. My favorite game now is to grab the tarp my people use to rake leaves and drag it all over the yard. My foster mom says I may have a little too much exuberance but can you ever have too much of that? I don't think so. I also love to chase the basketball. One of these days, I'm going to get it all in my mouth! I love to be with my people. I follow my foster mom all around. When she sits down, I'm right next to her or preferably in her lap. I don't like being alone, so would prefer a home where my people were gone for only 4 hours at a time. I have a little insecurity, after being dumped. My foster mom says no young children under 10 please, because I get very excited around food. I will steal their cookies. I was half starved. I also get excited to see my people and jump up. We are working on that. I get along with the three other dogs in my foster home but sometimes I play kind of rough. I sound really growly, but as long as your dog understands that, it's just how I play. I'm a very smart girl who learns quickly. I'm housebroken and ready to learn more. I'm looking for a home of my own and a lap I can lay my head on. If you're looking for a loving companion to be your best friend, please give me a chance!

23. Bobby

Adult (3 years 1 month) · Male · Patterdale Terrier (Fell Terrier) / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat) · 91 mi from Erie

Our
Bobby was found on the street, so matted that he had to be shaved to the skin, but also so emaciated, so weak, so starved, he could barely lift his head. He looked more like a carcass than a dog. His body scale score was a one. Usually when it’s that low, a dog’s organs start shutting down and they don’t survive. But not Bobby! He spent a week and a half at the vet, and he came to Rose’s Rescue the day he was released from their care.

Read more about Bobby

To say he’s made a remarkable recovery is an understatement! He gained weight steadily and before long, you could no longer see his ribs. His hair is coming back in so what once was bare skin is now covered with beautiful black fur.

Now Bobby is ready for new and much better adventures! He’s ready to chase balls and snuggle and soak up all the neck rubs he can get. He’s ready to patrol the years and keep it free from pesky critters. He’s ready to go for car rides and play with all the toys, and get as many treats as he can. He is ready to live his best life and will do so with gusto!

Bobby LOVES other dogs! He would love, love, love to have another canine pal (or more) to romp with. But be warned, he can already be high energy and very playful. If he teams up with another rascally pooch, it could mean crazy, over-the-top playtime!

Bobby is a crate-trained, and sleeps in a crate at night (in view of his foster mom’s bed) and is content in his crate while she is away.

What breed is Bobby? He very much looks like a Patterdale Terrier (rough/broken coat) in every way - size, body shape, ears, and even the unusual length of his tail. What’s more, he ACTS like that terrier breed 100%. But, that is not a breed that’s known to be found in this area, so with that in mind, it’s just a guess and frankly, we

have no idea what he is. In his picture from before he was shaved, he looked like a poodle, but his hair was so matted it was hard to say. His hair, so far, isn’t coming in curly but it’s too early to see that for sure. Maybe some schnauzer? For sure a lot of terrier in there, too, as that absolutely fits his personality.

24. Agar

Adult (2 years 3 months) · Male · Rottweiler (short coat) · 91 mi from Erie

I'm Agar a big handsome baby of a Block Head Rott, that is 2 and weighs in at 100 pounds. I should need about 10 more lbs, to get to my full weight. I have had a neglected 2 years. I was basically used to make puppies and kept outside. The person had a lot of dogs and sold me to a couple. I was covered in fleas and had lost some of my fur. The second couple kept me outside too. Now I am at the rescue, which I am thankful for. They gave me a good flea med and they died quickly. Then I had a medicated bath. Oh how good that felt. I have been neutered and vetted. I am in a big barn with my own couch and radio.

Read more about Agar

There is a door I can go outside into a kennel area. Then I get walks daily in a huge yard, for big me . I am very strong and need to learn to walk on a leash. I need overall training, because I have had none. I am too much, for the 70 year old lady I am with. A Rott lover that understands my breed, would be best to help me. A man would be great. I would love to hang out with the fellas in a barn or garage. I need a strong foster or adopter. I still think I'm a 10 pound puppy. I haven't really had a chance to bond to a person. If I could, I would be your best fan. I look forward to being in a home with someone to love me. It gets lonely out here. I don't expect much. I like being inside away from pesky bugs, but I do need a fenced yard to stretch my big body in. I am medium energy and entertain myself. I do love toys and balls. If you consider fostering me, you can start me in the right direction and get me ready for adoption, or keep yourself. What do you think, I will be your best bud. I'm ready to learn.

Chippy is a 3-year-old male Shetland Sheepdog with lots of spunk. He is good with people and is a love. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and ready to go to his new home. His companion went into assisted living and he is at Paws and Prayers. To meet him please do our non-obligatory application at www.pawsandprayers.org. His adoption fee is $300. Any questions, email marty@pawsandprayers.org. We have purchased a Bailey Chair for Chippy.

Read more about Chippy Special Needs

Chippy suffers from Megaesophagus. Megaesophagus is a condition in which the muscles of the esophagus fail. This means they can no longer properly move food or water downward, into the stomach. A normal esophagus works with a muscular, wave-like motion to propel food and water into the stomach. In this condition, the esophagus remains enlarged and the normal peristaltic movement does not occur, so food stays in the esophagus instead of moving into the stomach to be digested.

What types of foods do holistic vets recommend for dogs with megaesophagus? The diet for a pet with megaesophagus needs to be of a consistency that will easily move down through the esophagus without getting stuck. A “smoothie, moist porridge, or other soft consistency work well for many, though experimentation for the individual animal is often needed. Some dogs do best with food shaped into meatballs. A moist food may be blended in a blender or food processor to find a texture that works well for your pet. In lieu of 2 larger meals each day, it is recommended to feed 3-4 smaller meals. Both food and fluids need to be fed in an upright position and the animal should remain vertical between 15-30 minutes. A Bailey Chair is often used. Because high amounts of protein and fat require more stomach acid to digest, many experts recommend a diet lower in fats and protein and higher in carbs. This excess acid can cause erosion of the esophagus. The carbs help your pet maintain a good weight.

Treatment of megaesophagus in dogs: There have been reports that chiropractic treatment can be effective for some cases of megaesophagus. Acupuncture may also prove helpful in some cases as it stimulates the natural normal peristaltic activity.

Tootie is a 1‑year‑old Shih Tzu mix weighing just 9 pounds, and she is every bit as sweet as she looks. This little lovebug is affectionate, playful, and happiest when she’s close to her people. She’s the kind of dog who melts into your arms, follows you from room to room, and lights up the moment she sees you.

Tootie did wonderfully with kids and enjoys playing with other small dogs. Big dogs can make her a little nervous at first, but once she knows she’s safe, she warms up quickly. She loves toys, chewies, and snuggle time — she’s a perfect mix of playful energy and cozy companionship.

She’s crate trained and doing well with housetraining, though she’ll need a bit of patience and consistency as she settles into her new routine. Tootie is learning her leash skills and improving every day. A fully fenced yard (no invisible fences) is preferred so she can explore and play safely.

This little sweetheart rides beautifully in the car, was recently professionally groomed, and will need regular grooming to keep her looking and feeling her best.

Tootie is ready for a family who will adore her, spoil her, and give her the safe, loving home she deserves. She’s a gentle, joyful, loyal little girl — and she’s so ready to be someone’s whole world.

30. Ricky Ras

Young (1 year 9 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Pomeranian / Mixed (medium coat) · 92 mi from Erie

Ricky Ras was born about January 26, 2025 and weighs about 10 lbs. When a dog comes into Rochester Animal Services in poor condition or has a potential behavior issue they deem the dog "Rescue Only" and when I saw this sad looking soul come through in an email saying second request and time was running out I felt the urge to offer him a soft place to fall. It was wonderful that a RAS volunteer met me in Dansville for the tradeoff. The story goes that Ricky had been on the run in the CITY of Rochester for some time and terribly fear protective and had to be caught with a net!!! I can't imagine how frightened he was and he was acting badly upon entry to the shelter. There are notes that within 2 days he was "eating well, shy but not aggressive" so he was settling. The poor little guy had fleas so bad there was hair loss and a very itchy secondary bacterial infection and several nasty mats. This would make most of us a little snarky! He came here a couple weeks later and was easy to handle upon being removed from his transport crate. He did ride well in the car on the two hour trip not making a peep. He is doing very well with the other dogs here. House training seems to be doing well and he has learned to use the dog door. With any of these small dogs floor potty pads being available just makes life easier. He has been fine with us humans but we've given him space and time - he's been through A LOT! He did nip his foster Dad as he was picking him up to go to the vet to be neutered. Is it possible he knew where he was going and for what??? Well, this was quite the story and as he continues to heal both physically and emotionally, we look forward to an application from someone willing to give him a forever home where nothing bad will ever happen again. Update: Ricky has grown a GORGEOUS fluffy, wavey, coat of fur and enjoys being brushed. He particularly loves one person here and shows her just how much love and affection he has been starved of for however long we've no clue. When picked up and held against her chest he licks her neck, snuggles in, and wiggles and wags - ADORABLE for someone that is willing to give him the time he needs and someone that understands he may not be ok in a high stress/social environment such as a Petsmart for a very long time, if ever. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $_350.00__.
Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.

Why adopt an adult dog in Erie

An adult dog's personality is fully formed, so the rescue can tell you how they are with people, other pets and busy households. Many have lived in foster homes and are already house-trained.

Grown dogs need less supervision than puppies and often know the basics, like sitting and walking on a leash, which suits people who work or have young children.
