8. Daisy
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 61 mi from Jackson

DAISY IS STILL WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO NOTICE HER She has been at the Shelter since February and needs her own home. Daisy was found as a stray at the river. She does okay with other dogs but really shines when she is with people, regardless of age. Daisy is a Pit Bull and with that comes a label that many people can not see past. We ask that you look past what her breed is and see her for way she is---a sweet, loving girl just looking for the right person. Could that be you?Daisy has been posted before. Her story has been shared, her pictures have been seen, and still, this sweet girl is waking up inside the shelter instead of in a home of her own.Sometimes the saddest shelter dogs are not the ones who have completely given up.
Read more about Daisy
Sometimes they are the ones who still look at every person with hope in their eyes, believing each new face might finally be the one who came for them. That is Daisy.Daisy was originally found wandering near Mason’s Boat Dock. When one of our volunteers went out to pick her up, they expected to have to catch a scared and frightened stray. Instead, Daisy simply walked right over, happy to see someone and ready to make a new friend. She had already wandered into a nearby yard and was playing with the homeowner’s dog like they had known each other forever. She was so trusting and so comfortable with people that she did not even need to ride back to the shelter inside a kennel. She rode beside our volunteer, looking out the window and enjoying the company, completely unaware that she was being taken to a shelter instead of home.We posted Daisy everywhere because we were certain somebody had to be missing a dog this loving. We waited for a phone call. We checked every message. We hoped somebody would recognize her face and come rushing through the shelter doors. But nobody came. When Daisy arrived, she had scrapes and scuffs across her face. We believe she had been wandering through the woods and trying to survive on her own. It is also possible she had an encounter with another dog along the way. Daisy can be selective about other dogs, so she may be happiest as the only pet. A proper meet-and-greet would be required if another dog already lives in the home. When it comes to people, though, Daisy is absolutely wonderful. She loves attention, walks, toys, fresh air, and spending time with our volunteers. She greets people with a wagging tail and those hopeful eyes, always ready to believe that maybe this person came to choose her.But every visit eventually ends. The volunteer walks away, Daisy returns to her kennel, and the shelter doors close for another night. There is nothing wrong with Daisy. She has simply been overlooked. We do not want her to become another good dog who spends months or years behind kennel doors because her pictures never reached the right family. Daisy deserves a couch to stretch out on, a yard to explore, and someone who will never leave her wondering why they did not come back. Please help us give Daisy another chance to be seen. Share her story, tag your friends, and tell someone about the sweet flower still waiting at the shelter.Daisy has never stopped believing that somebody is coming for her.We just pray she does not have to keep believing much longer. ❤️Daisy will be microchipped, and a Fi GPS tracker voucher will be included with her adoption. 9. Cocoa
Adult · Male · Terrier · 61 mi from Jackson

COCOA IS SAFE IN FOSTER, BUT HE CANNOT COME BACK TO THE SHELTERWe are begging for an adopter for Cocoa.Cocoa is safe right now. He has a foster home, people caring for him, and room to run and play. But foster care is temporary, and returning to the shelter is not an option for him. Cocoa needs someone to step forward and make the home he has been waiting for permanent.Cocoas story began with pain. When he came to us, he had a chain embedded in his neck. A chain had been left around him long enough and tightly enough to become part of his skin. We cannot imagine everything this boy experienced before reaching us, but even after all of it, Cocoa still wanted affection.
Read more about Cocoa
He still wanted someone to love him.Once Cocoa entered the shelter, the physical wounds were not the only things he had to overcome. The noise, confinement, and constant activity inside the kennels became overwhelming for him. Kennel stress began hiding the real Cocoa from everyone who walked past him.Inside a kennel, people saw a stressed and frightened dog. Outside of that kennel, we saw the affectionate boy who wanted to be close to us. We knew there was so much more to Cocoa than what the shelter environment allowed people to see. Then someone gave Cocoa a chance and opened their home to him as a foster. That is when we finally got to meet the real Cocoa.Cocoa is now running and playing with multiple dogs, and he absolutely loves them. He enjoys having doggy friends and being part of a pack. This dog, who struggled so much inside the shelter, is thriving when surrounded by other dogs in a home. And it is not only dogs that Cocoa loves. He loves the chickens too!His foster home has shown us that Cocoa is not meant to spend his life behind kennel bars. He is meant to run through a yard with other dogs, enjoy the company of his people, and finally experience what it feels like to belong somewhere.Cocoa is still frightened by loud noises. Because sudden sounds can scare him, he needs to remain secured with a harness whenever he is outside. He may also need medication during especially loud events to help him remain calm. He needs a family that will understand his fears, keep him safe, and give him reassurance when the world becomes a little too loud.Cocoa does not need to be someones only dog. He is already proving how much he loves living, running, and playing with multiple dogs. A home with friendly doggy siblings may be exactly what helps him continue feeling safe and confident. But Cocoa cannot come back to the shelter. The kennel environment is not a place where he can successfully live again. His foster family has given him safety, happiness, and the opportunity to show everyone the wonderful dog hidden beneath all that stress. We cannot allow everything he has gained to disappear because nobody stepped forward to make him theirs. He is safe today, but he still does not have a forever home.Cocoa is approximately 50 pounds and is already microchipped. His adoption will also include a voucher for a Fi GPS tracker to help his new family keep him protected. The chain is gone. The kennel is behind him. He is running with dogs, loving the chickens, and finally learning what a happy life feels like. Now we need someone willing to make sure he never loses it.Please do not scroll past Cocoa because he is currently safe in foster. Being safe in foster does not mean his story is finished. It only means someone gave us more time to find the person he has been waiting for.We are begging you to share Cocoa. Talk about him. Send his story to someone with other dogs who may be looking for one more member of their family. Help us find the person who will promise him that foster care is the last temporary place he will ever have to call home.ADOPTION FEESFixed Dogs: $100Not Fixed Dogs: $125Fixed Cats: $85Not Fixed Cats: $100Waverly Animal ShelterHumphreys County Humane Society108 Young RoadWaverly, TN 37185Shelter: 931-296-7319Email: animals@hchswaverly.comIf you are unable to reach

11. Elsa
Young · Female · Unknown breed · 57 mi from Jackson

Elsa is super sweet and very playful just like her sister Anna. She is about 7 months old. She is wonderful with my kids and all my dogs. She would be best for a younger family bc she likes to jump and that would not be great for the elderly. She is skittish when first meeting men (same as Anna). She is friendly to my cat as well but gets to excited so I keep them separate.

Adopting a dog with children in Jackson
Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.
Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.
Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
