1. Smoky Bear
Adult (7 years 6 months) · Male · Dachshund / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 14 mi from Highlands

Smoky Bear is a new arrival to CTDR after being found running the streets in Austin. The finder took him home in hopes of finding his owners but to no avail. CTDR was contacted to see if we had room for this handsome boy and of course, we said yes. Smoky has started his vetting process but sadly he tested positive for those nasty heartworms and will have to undergo heartworm treatment before being adopted along with needing an extensive dental. Please look for updates on this handsome boy.
2. Sadie
Young (2 years 4 months) · Female · Dachshund (short coat) · 14 mi from Highlands

Sadie is a new arrival to CTDR after being surrendered by her owner who could no longer keep her. Sadie became a little jealous of a new dog on the home and it was best to have Sadie find a new home. Sadie is a beautiful red standard girl who would do best as an only dog in the home. She is fully up to date on her vaccines and is ready to find her forever home. Could that be you? 3. Gigi Grace
Young (5 years) · Female · Dachshund / Cavalier King Charles Spaniel / Mixed (long coat) · 14 mi from Highlands

Gigi Grace--or Grace, as we call her--can be calm and is always affectionate, once she gets to know you. She is my shadow. She follows me everywhere, and when I sit down, she jumps in my lap. She loves to nap curled up next to me. If she's not on my lap, she is on the floor right next to me. However, she is also very playful, especially lately, since she is now used to us and fully recovered from her surgery (spaying). After breakfast, she likes to play with our other dachshund. She also has a particular toy that she likes. She will shake it and run around with it and play tug-of-war with me. She LOVES to run around the yard.
Read more about Gigi Grace
She tries to get the collie to chase her, and she loves to chase the ball. Grace is pretty much house trained. The only time she's had accidents is when we leave the house for a few hours. I am working on getting her to use the pee pad during those times. It's going well, but she's not 100% perfect yet. Grace does not seem to have any separation anxiety, but she has two other dogs here to hang around with when we're gone. No destructive behaviors (like chewing); no excessive barking. The only time she barks is when someone comes to the house. She is good on the leash and in the car. We have really loved having her with us. She has been really easy to take care of.

He's just a puppy and can get into a lot of trouble so you'll need to be willing to give him lots of gentle guidance, so he can learn all those big dog things, like how to behave in a house, what a crate is for, how to walk on a leash without pulling, and all those verbal commands every dog should know. He may even treat people with rough play or decide that a new pair of shoes or a table leg would make a great chew toy, so a lot of appropriate toys should be in his future. The good news is that with the right training and LOTS of love, he'll be the best addition to your family ever and your best bud.
If you are interested in him, please send an email to SCP! Applications can be found on our website at secondchancepets.org under the "Forms" tab. Please complete and return to SCP for review! 13. Gypsy
Puppy (6 months) · Female · Catahoula Leopard Dog / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat) · 21 mi from Highlands

Gypsy and her sister Stormi were dumped in a hay field with their mom and had no food, water or shelter. We estimate her birth date to be early April 2026 and think she is a mix of Shepherd, lab, boxer and maybe Catahoula Leopard Dog with an estimated adult weight of 45 to 47 lbs. She is mostly house trained and uses a doggy door when she needs to go potty. She has a sweet/silly personality, loves and is kissy on people, cats, and other dogs. When not playing, her calm side comes alive. She likes to watch TV or lay upside down on the couch nearby when you on a computer or reading or with her dog friends and cats. She especially likes to watch you cook (she is very food oriented). She is attentive to her family, bonds easily and is making great progress on her leash and obedience training learning all the commands a puppy needs to know. She does great in a car but has gotten car sick on rare occasions. She loves to play with toys, collect them in her bed and chew on chewies (lots of them). She especially likes her squeaky toys, sucks on her favorite, will carry them around gently and then decide it's time to shred them so you will need to keep few spares available for a while. Gypsy will need an active family and/or doggy playmate. She's also looking for a loving home with a yard big enough that she can run and play and that is secured with a 6ft wooden fence which is not near a busy street. The good news is that with the right training and LOTS of love, she will be the best addition to your family ever and your best bud, ready to go when you are.

15. Knox Oath
Young (1 year) · Male · Dachshund (short coat) · 21 mi from Highlands

Meet Knox Oath!
At just 1 year old and 14 pounds, Knox Oath is a bundle of energy, curiosity, and playful puppy charm! This busy boy wants to know what you’re doing at all times, and if you’re touching something, you can bet he’ll have his nose right there to investigate. Getting dressed can be an adventure with Knox around!
Knox LOVES, loves, loves to play, especially with squeaky toys! He also enjoys running the fence with the neighbor dogs in the backyard and would do well with a playful canine companion who can help him burn off some of that energy.
Read more about Knox Oath
Knox seems to be house-trained, with just one accident on his first day, and he has already learned to use the doggie door. He was pretty wound up during his first few nights, but he’s beginning to settle into his new routine. With consistency, patience, and continued training, this smart boy should keep making progress.
Knox has occasionally shown some food or toy guarding, growling when he feels the need to protect something. While he has not bitten, this is something his future family will need to take seriously and work on through positive-reinforcement training and appropriate management.
Knox is looking for an active family ready for fun, games, and the commitment to help him learn his manners. He has plenty of energy to spare, a curious nose that never quits, and lots of playful personality packed into his 16-pound body. And when playtime is over? He’s happy to be a lap dog, too!
If you’re looking for a lively little sidekick who will keep you smiling and keep you on your toes, Knox Oath might just be your perfect match!

16. Woody Scout
Young (4 years 1 month) · Male · Dachshund (long coat) · 21 mi from Highlands

Meet Woody!
Woody is a handsome 4-year-old, 15-pound red long-haired Dachshund who has already been through more than any dog should. He came to the shelter as a stray, sadly dragging his feet and struggling to walk normally. He spent almost a month waiting for someone to come for him, and thankfully, Dachshund Rescue of Houston did!
Woody is now safe and resting comfortably in a loving foster home. He can walk, although he still has a funny gait, so for now he is enjoying some well-deserved Kennel rest to give his body the time it needs to heal completely.
Read more about Woody Scout
Despite everything he has been through, Woody hasn't let it dampen his spirits. He is a fun, friendly, affectionate boy who loves nothing more than being close to his people. He is a wonderful lap dog and especially enjoys being cuddled and rocked like a baby.
Woody is housetrained, crate trained, leash trained, and does well in the car. He is playful and goofy, but also obedient, intelligent, eager to please, gentle, and even-tempered. He enjoys attention and affection and seems to have a naturally sweet disposition. We believe Woody could be a wonderful addition to a home with children, older adults, and other friendly dogs.
For now, Woody's job is simple: rest, heal, get healthy, and enjoy being loved. Once his body catches up with his happy spirit, we think this special boy is going to make someone an absolutely wonderful companion.
Woody has waited long enough for someone to choose him. Now he just needs a family who will give him the love and patience he deserves.

17. Petey Justice
Young (3 years 4 months) · Male · Dachshund (short coat) · 21 mi from Highlands

Meet Petey!
Petey is a 3-year-old, 14-pound bundle of joy with a smile that can brighten anyone's day. This handsome little guy had a rough start after being found as an injured stray. Because of his injury, his tail had to be docked, but don't let that fool you. If Petey isn't sleeping, he's wagging what he has left with pure happiness!
Read more about Petey Justice
Life as a beloved pet is still a new adventure for Petey, and he's embracing it one day at a time. He has a big appetite and not just for food, but for love and attention, too. He adores being close to his people and is happiest curled up in a lap or soaking up affection. He's eager to please, even-tempered, and has been described by the veterinary staff as a "super sweet, happy boy."
Like many former strays, Petey hasn't quite forgotten that food can be scarce. He's an enthusiastic little trash scavenger, so keeping tempting snacks and garbage out of reach will help set him up for success. With consistency and patience, he's continuing to learn what it means to be a cherished family member.
Petey can be a little protective when first meeting new people, but once he realizes you're a friend, his sweet and affectionate nature shines through. He rides well in the car, gets along with other dogs, is great with adults, and is always ready to be your loyal sidekick.
Petey has overcome a difficult beginning and is now looking for the happy ending he deserves. If you're searching for a devoted companion with a heart as big as his smile, Petey is ready to wag his way right into your life.
Petey is proof that sometimes the sweetest souls just need someone to give them a second chance.

18. Sailor
Adult (5 years 11 months) · Male · Yellow Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 22 mi from Highlands

Meet Sailor!
Sailor is an approximately 6-year-old Lab mix with a big personality, a love of adventure, and an even bigger love for his people. He’s looking for a home where he can be someone’s loyal companion, adventure buddy, and couch potato—all rolled into one.
Sailor absolutely lights up when he realizes he’s going for a walk, a car ride, or an outdoor adventure. He gets adorably excited at first, then settles right down once he’s on leash or in the car. He would be an amazing match for someone who enjoys hiking, exploring, or spending time near the water.
Read more about Sailor
And water is definitely Sailor’s happy place. He LOVES swimming, playing fetch in a pool or lake, and enthusiastically “attacking” the spray from a garden hose. He does great on a pontoon boat and would probably take well to paddleboarding or canoeing with a little training. On trails, he has excellent recall off leash and loves getting out to explore.
For all his adventurous energy, Sailor is just as happy relaxing at home. He loves being near his people and curling up on the couch. He is crate trained and willingly goes into his kennel—often choosing to rest there on his own. He also rides calmly in the car, including on long trips.
Sailor has had three weeks of professional sleep-away training and knows a great list of commands, including heel, sit, stay, down, place, kennel, here, “leave me alone,” and more. He walks nicely on leash and is very food motivated. His all-time favorite treat is hard-boiled egg yolk; he can hear the little “tap tap” of an egg on the counter from practically anywhere in the house and will come running! He also has excellent house manners and does not chew things that aren’t his toys.
Sailor would thrive best as the only pet in the home. Cats are far too intriguing and, in his opinion, clearly meant to be chased. He has done well with some smaller dogs, particularly more submissive females. On walks, he is generally easy to redirect around other reactive dogs, although he may respond if another dog surprises or challenges him through a fence.
Most of all, Sailor loves being part of his family. He wants to be included, whether that means heading out for an adventure or hanging out together at home. He would do best in an adults-only household or a home with older teenagers.
Sailor’s current family loves him deeply and is heartbroken to be looking for a new home for him. Before they adopted him, Sailor had spent about two years living in a kennel. Sailor is comfortable with affection from adults—even big hugs—but he is uneasy about being touched by young children, likely because of something in his life before he joined the family.
Because their children understandably want to love on him, his family has made the difficult decision that Sailor deserves a home where everyone can feel comfortable and where he can truly thrive.
Sailor has already been through a lot, and he has so much love, fun, companionship, and adventure left to give. In the right home—one without young children and preferably without other pets—he is going to make someone an incredibly devoted best friend.
Please share and help us find Sailor the home he deserves.

Adopting a dog in Highlands
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.

Pick a dog and contact the rescue or shelter looking after them. Most ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip.
Listings are updated daily. Rescues are responsible for their own listings; a dog may have been adopted since this page was updated.
