Carmella is a Pit Bull mix. She needs a home without other dogs, although she does well with kids and cats. Carmella does enjoy car rides and is leash and crate trained. She is a 'runner' if she gets the chance, so containment in a secure yard or on a leash is a must.

Carmella is spayed and vaccinated and ready for her new home!

2. Carmello

Senior · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed · 51 mi from Harrisonburg

WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS? Meet 13-year-old Carmello, the pit mix who apparently missed the memo that seniors are supposed to slow down! This handsome gentleman is 13 going on 3! He's playful, energetic, loves his toys, enjoys car rides, and walks like a gentleman on a leash. Basically, he's got his retirement plan all figured out... and it involves FUN! Carmello is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. He LOVES attention and would be thrilled to have a family to spoil him with all the love he deserves! Cats? We're not quite sure how he feels about them, so slow, patient introductions are best.

Read more about Carmello

Kids? We think he would do best with older kids, maybe 10 plus, who understand boundaries and know that even the most lovable old man needs a little personal space sometimes! He can also get a bit overstimulated at times and will do best with an understanding and knowledgeable owner. Carmello has plenty of life, love, and squeaky-toy destruction left in him. He's looking for a family who will see past his age and recognize the fun-loving, affectionate boy waiting to steal their hearts. Senior dogs are seriously underrated! Come meet Carmello and give this distinguished gentleman the happily-ever-after he deserves! Interested in adopting? 3. Lacey

Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Harrisonburg

☀️Lacey is a Super Star☀️

Lacey is one of those very special souls that lights up a room and brings joy just by being in her presence.

Lacey is cuddly, snuggly, and oh so sweet! She is a 5 year old boxer mix, housebroken, crate trained, about 45 pounds, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

She is good with other dogs, as always we do require a meet and greet with other dogs in the home.

When taken into the cat room at the animal shelter, Lacey was intimidated by the hissing kitties and backed away. We feel that is a good indicator that she may be able to live harmoniously live with cats.

please note that Diablo is not at the animal shelter and is not a sponsored adoption. He is in foster care with our Rescue group.

Diablo is a 3 month old, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, mixed breed puppy, adoptable through Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter. He has a huge personality and has loved everyone he’s met. We’ve learned he loves toys - tennis balls, stuffed animals, tug of war, squeaky toys. He isn’t picky, he just loves to play. He’s working on potty training but seems to be a quick learner. He is dog friendly and has a ton of puppy energy.

7. Otto in Richmond VA

Adult · Male · Beagle · 94 mi from Harrisonburg

Introducing Otto, the perfect pup! Weighing in at just 20 pounds and about 5 years old, Otto is looking for a home that is active, fun and loves to play. He is great with male and female adults, all aged kids, all sized dogs, and even cats. Otto is crate trained, house trained, and has learned how to be a snuggly indoor beagle boy, with no bad habits. Otto did not have the best start in life, so he looks a little older than he is, but he has plenty of spunk and loves to go hard, (but then go home to nap!!). Otto’s only requirement is for a person/family that will give him lots of attention and stuffies. This boy cherishes his toys!

11. Jaxson

Adult · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed · 94 mi from Harrisonburg

Meet Jaxson — the quintessential man’s best friend.
Jaxson is looking for a human who needs him just as much as he needs them.
This boy loves with his entire soul. He’ll tuck his head between your neck and shoulder, lean in with every ounce of his being, and stay there as long as you’ll let him. There’s nothing in the world he loves more than a good snuggle. And thank goodness, because his snuggles are downright therapeutic.
Jaxson is a petite 45-pound, 6-year-old guy with a calm, easygoing personality. But every now and then, the sillies come out. He’ll roll onto his back, chomp at the air, and make the most ridiculous little gremlin noises.
His favorite things include snuggling, going for walks, chewing on bones, riding in the car, meeting people, snuggling, and, of course, more snuggling.
He absolutely adores children and has been wonderfully gentle with them.
Jaxson is a confident guy who is well-behaved in the house.

Read more about Jaxson

He prefers to be in the same room as his people, but he’s happy to settle in with a bone and entertain himself without being underfoot. He has a history of separation anxiety, but he’s made remarkable progress. He’s now perfectly comfortable relaxing in his crate while his people are away.

13. Rico

Senior (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (medium coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Heartwarming and touching—senior dog Rico needed something to soften his bones, and sometimes a blanket just doesn’t do it. We are so grateful for the donation of this beautiful lavender fluffy bed today, just in time to share with Rico! Rico came to us with a unpleasant skin infection, lots of hair loss, infected eyes, and infected ears. He’s getting the works as far as medication, but we don’t want to stop there: we want to give him love and attention and anything else he might need to recover and be a glorious pet! He is around 40 pounds, neutered. housetrained, and fine with other dogs and cats. Is he the kind of dog that might fit beautifully in your home as a foster dog while we get his skin straightened out? We hope so! Please let us know if you would like to help us out by taking them in! His mom is having some medical issues and had to give him up so she could treat herself.

14. Claire

Adult (6 years 2 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Claire is one of our favorites!

Read more about Claire

Following her stray hold, we took her to the vet to get her checked out, and discovered she was not only heartworm positive, but also positive for two tickborne diseases, and had horrible ear infections in both of her ears. This girl must have been in such misery, and yet she maintained her good attitude, her playfulness, and wanted everyone to pay attention to her. Claire is about six years old, (best guess), and is spayed, as we can see her green tattoo from the Spay/Neuter Clinic showing clearly on her belly when she flops to the grass, rolls over, and asks for belly rubs! This girl is amazing, smart, (does a great sit!) and housetrained. She is surely missed by her family! We have discovered Claire has no patience with many dogs, and is going to be very selective about who she lives with. She is fabulous with toddlers and children, but needs no other animals in her home. She is heartworm positive and is being treated for them via the "slowkill" heartworm treatment method. She also has badly inflamed ears, due to chronic ear infections and we are helping her find great relief from that pain, too. We know there’s a home for her somewhere! Apply to adopt and let’s get her into a home!

15. Biscuit

Adult (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Biscuit arrived as a stray, healthy and social, but without leash-walking skills, and we had hoped he would be home by now! He appears to be housetrained, and he loves having humans around to show him attention. He has learned that the only way to get outside for fun and exercise is to wait patiently for a volunteer to come to his kennel run with a leash in hand so he can enjoy not only human presence, but also enjoy the landscape and smells all around. We think that Biscuit will be a fun companion, and are enjoying getting to know him.

17. Emma

Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Update: it’s hard to imagine all that this little dog has gone through in her short lifespan, but being abandoned, hit by a car, then left for dead for two weeks without anyone looking for her has given her the right to be distrustful of the human race. And yet newly renamed “Emma” Has nothing but love and licks for the humans who are caring for her, seeing her through not only two surgeries, but extensive medical care following those surgeries. Emma has such a story she could tell us, but she prefers to look ahead rather than back, and remains optimistic that she will heal completely and find a wonderful home. (Emma suffered broken bones and at the end of August received FHO surgery on her left leg, and a rod and pins placed in her right leg during extensive surgery in Charlottesville at Virginia Veterinary Specialists. follow up surgery was done just a couple weeks later because one of the pin placements was irritating her incision.) We feel she is now on the road to full recovery, although she now faces weekly rehab appointments to help her regain strength in her legs. Emma has been cared for by our community, including a volunteer who drives her to Virginia Vet for her appointments. There, a local Vet Hospital, who adore her, and foster families who are willing to give up their time to see her through her daily requirements. Emma weighs under 50 pounds, is house trained, Gets along with every dog she has met, and feels cats are just an extension of her own family. She has been gentle at every corner of her journey, grateful for everything being done for her, and willing to do whatever is asked of her. It’s been a rough road for her. But we want to see her through it. Let us know if you would like to be part of her family, and make her an extension of yours.

Read more about Emma

LITTLE DOG has declared that she wants a new name! Her foster dad felt she wants to be called Emma, and be the namesake of the young woman who cared for her while she was at Altavista during her initial two week medical care time. We think it fits her beautifully, and she responds well to it! So everyone, put aside her Little Dog name and let us introduce Emma to you! Emma is about a year-old, and after being hit by a car and totally ignored for what the vet guessed was one to two weeks before treatment was found for her, surgery has been done, and she is now a happy, healthy girl recovering beautifully.

19. Blue

Adult · Male · Collie (long coat) · 90 mi from Harrisonburg

Meet Blue!
Blue is a handsome, happy-go-lucky young man who is almost three years old and ready to find his perfect home! Recently neutered, this big boy is full of energy, affection, and personality. He needs to gain a little weight, but once he fills out, he’ll be an impressive 75+ pounds of Collie charm!
Blue loves people, enjoys children, and gets along well with other dogs. He’s an enthusiastic guy who is still learning his manners, so he’ll need a family willing to continue his training and help him become the best boy he can be. He can be a little mouthy during play and sometimes gets carried away with excited grabbing, but he has plenty of love to give!
Blue has a strong prey drive and gets very excited when he spots squirrels, so a home with appropriate supervision around small animals is important.
This fun-loving boy is discovering the joys of being a dog! Toys seem to be a relatively new adventure, and Blue loves them all.

Read more about Blue

Pig ears are another favorite when he’s in the mood for a good chew. He’s made wonderful progress with leash walking and isn’t bothered by cars, bikes, or motorcycles. People, however, are VERY exciting! Blue loves seeing everyone and may announce his enthusiasm with an enthusiastic bark.
Despite his exuberance on walks, Blue is calm and friendly when visiting public places and has enjoyed several successful outings to local businesses. He also rides well in the car, although he needs to be safely restrained because he’d much rather climb up front to be closer to his foster mom! He’s crate-trained, but he’s also well-behaved in the house and is trusted to sleep and stay home without being crated.
Blue is a big, lovable bundle of potential! He’ll thrive with a family ready to provide consistent training, appropriate outlets for his energy, and plenty of opportunities to explore the world with his people. In return, you’ll get a friendly, playful companion who brings a whole lot of joy wherever he goes.
Could Blue be the big-hearted boy you’ve been waiting for?

21. Diamond

Young (2 years 5 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat) · 42 mi from Harrisonburg

Diamond loves all people. She’s been in a foster home with a baby and was sweet and gentle. She loves meeting new people and is personable and happy in all social settings. She also likes dogs and has great dog skills. We use her to test new dogs at the kennel because her doggy skills are so good. She does fine with females and males alike. She has met cats and reacted indifferently, although I’m unsure if she ever lived with cats.

Diamond was an unclaimed stray from Buckingham County. She is roughly 2-3 years old, spayed, microchipped, and fully vetted. About 37 lbs.

She loves going for walks but needs an easy-walk harness as she pulls a bit when excited. She loves car rides and rides nicely. Her best quality is her sweet and gentle nature. Her worst habit is jumping up when excited. She’s crate trained and doesn’t have separation anxiety :)

22. Buddy

Adult (3 years) · Male · Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 78 mi from Harrisonburg

Buddy is such a fun little dude searching for his best friend. He’s silly and playful but also loves some good scratches and a snuggle in a blanket, lap included is even better! He is still learning a lot about the world and how to be the best boy he can, but he is so quick and eager to learn. He loves to be outside and his personality comes out quickly if there’s sunshine and grass involved. Buddy also does really well inside and enjoys crate time. His adoption fee is $250.

23. Jay

Adult (4 years 1 month) · Male · Hound (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Jay had a great walk yesterday — and we also learned he’s one smart cookie! Heading away from the shelter? Perfect leash manners. Heading back? Not so fast. He let his volunteer know in no uncertain terms that this was not the right direction. Lots of hemming and hawing. Once inside, he put on the brakes at the door too. But Jay’s a good boy — as soon as he spotted the treats waiting, he marched right into his run. Fun, sweet, and clever. Loves toys! Jay keeps us on our toes and makes us laugh.

24. Pup

Adult · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed · 51 mi from Harrisonburg

MEET PUP! Sometimes the dogs who haven't had the best start in life are the ones who appreciate a little love the most. Meet 3-year-old Pup, a 30-ish pound Pit Mix who is ready to discover just how wonderful life can be! Pup can be a little shy when he first meets you, but give him a little time and patience and his spunky, curious personality starts to shine. Once he knows he's safe, Pup absolutely LOVES being loved on! Outside is where Pup really gets to show his curious side. He wants to check out everything around him and take in all the sights and smells. He also walks well on leash, is housetrained, and does pretty well riding in the car.

Read more about Pup

Pup has unfortunately not had the best life before coming to us and was kept outside most of the time. We'd love nothing more than to find him a family who will show him what it means to be safe, loved, included, and part of a family. Dogs: Pup is dog selective and seems to prefer female dogs. A dog test will be required with any current dog in the home. Cats: His previous owner said he was interested in cats but generally indifferent toward them. As always, slow and patient introductions are best. Kids: He has only been around older children, so we recommend a home with older kids who can respect his space while he gets comfortable. Pup is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. This sweet boy may need a little time to come out of his shell, but we think the family willing to give him that time is going to discover one pretty special dog. Could you be the person who shows Pup that his best days are still ahead? Come meet Pup and give him the chance to be your new best friend! Interested in adopting? 25. Ozzy

Adult · Male · Beagle / Eurasier / Mixed · 51 mi from Harrisonburg

Meet Ozzy! Ozzy is a 3-year-old Beagle mix who is still learning that the world isn't such a scary place. He is a timid, nervous boy who may need some time—and possibly a few meet-and-greets—to feel comfortable and understand that he is safe. Once Ozzy starts getting some love, he slowly begins to soften and show you the sweet boy underneath that nervous exterior. He just needs someone willing to be patient, give him time, and let him come out of his shell at his own pace. Ozzy needs a home with children 12 years or older. We are unsure how he feels about cats, so very slow and patient introductions will be needed to make sure everyone is comfortable.

Read more about Ozzy

We are also unsure about him with other dogs, and a dog test is required with any current dogs in the home. Ozzy is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. He may not be the dog who runs up and greets you right away—but if you're willing to give him the time he needs, you could be the person who shows Ozzy that he has nothing to be afraid of and that he is finally home. Ozzy is looking for a patient, understanding family who will let him learn to trust at his own pace. Could you be his safe place? Interested in adopting? 27. Dulcie-

Young (2 years 1 month) · Female · Coonhound / Mixed (short coat) · 42 mi from Harrisonburg

Howdy ya’ll! I’m Dulcie (pronounced Dull-see), otherwise known as the sweetest lil’ Southern thang this side of the Miss-is-sip! I’m so affectionate my foster mama says I’m a borderline pest because of it. I know she don’t really mean it, tho. She loves the dickens out of me! She says I’m a unique cross ‘tween a Southern Belle and a backwoods country gal. I have the poise and beauty of a Belle but also love to get down and dirty! Found a pile of cow poop? Let’s roll, baby! I seem to do well and enjoy going for rides, so we can cruise those back mountain roads in your 4x4 together with the windows down. You drive, I’ll sniff! When I channel my inner Scarlet O’Hare, I'm mostly a fine young lady who minds her tongue (except when I get mad and frankly don’t give a damn and say so—but that doesn’t happen too often—I really only get mad at my foster brother sometimes and have to tell him off). So, I haven’t been very vocal thus far and mama says that’s a good thing ‘cause it’ll make it easier for someone who has neighbors nearby to adopt me.

Read more about Dulcie-

I like other dogs and enjoy a hearty play session or three a day but, even being the young whippersnapper I am, I am not bounce off the wall high energy. Mama says I can call myself crate trained because I put myself in a crate when I feel like chillin’ and when she goes away, she shuts the crate door and comes back later to find that I was a good girl while she was gone. I kind of like to hang out around mama so come in and go in a crate fairly often, unlike my foster brother who will stay outside until them cows comes home (and he don’t even roll in poop; what’s up with that?!) I’ve not had any potty accidents inside either since I got here! However, there is some red, white and blue Rebel in my blood; to this I must confess. My naughty claim to fame is that I like to pilfer soft things...like dirty laundry, blankets, and rolls of toilet paper (and holy moly do I have fun makin’ a mess with those things, yee haw!!!). Maybe one of these days it’ll make mama break out some more soft plushie toys for me -n- Dewey. One can never have too many toys, I always sez. I’ve heard of these things called cats but I don’t know as if I’ve ever seen one myself to have an opinion of them. I guess that’s about it about me except that mama says she thinks I might be a good starter hound. I had to ask her what that meant and she said basically, because hounds aren’t for everyone, and I seem to be such a good and easy one, that even folks with no prior hound experience can likely handle my little speckled butt because I’m such a love bug and seem eager to please (unless there’s toilet paper involved). So if I sound like the almost perfect, not quite an angel, lovely, charming and fun girl you’ve been looking for contact the Highland County Humane Society in Monterey, VA and plan us a meet-n-greet date; I’d love to make your acquaintance (and scope out your house for toilet paper---oops, maybe I shouldn’t say that part)!! Come take me home on some country roads; you won’t be disappointed!

28. Macaroni

Puppy (6 months) · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 68 mi from Harrisonburg

Meet Macaroni!

Read more about Macaroni

Macaroni, like the noodle dish he is named after, is a goofy guy who exudes warmth, love, and wholesomeness. If it’s not his playful puppy antics making you laugh, his ears certainly will. They have been voted the best ears by the volunteers, and each seems to have a mind of their own. We’re hoping he’ll grow into them; but even if he doesn’t, they’ll still be great!
Mac’s favorite things are playing and laying in your lap to be held like a baby. That is also his favorite napping position, which comes in close as a favorite thing to do when he’s not frolicking around. He’s definitely a #1 snuggle buddy! Mac gets along great with other dogs, cats, and all people. Everyone is his friend! He also knows the basic commands of ‘sit’ and ‘down’; a very smart dude, just like his brothers.
And one of his cutest features? He’s a talker! He loves to let you know exactly what he’s thinking, and to know what you’re thinking in return. He’s affectionate, fun, and full of personality—an all-around wonderful puppy looking for his forever home.

29. Butter Bean

Puppy (6 months) · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 68 mi from Harrisonburg

Say hello to Butter Bean!

Affectionately called “Bean” for short, he is a typical puppy; playful, full of energy, and a total heartthrob. He might sometimes remind you of a ‘jumping’ Bean, with his big energy and zest for life. He loves a good game of tug, wrestling with his brothers and friends, and would surely love a good hike or two.

Read more about Butter Bean

He is house and crate trained (he goes into his crate on command), and gets along with everyone; dogs, cats, and humans of all ages and sizes. He has yet to meet a stranger, and loves to be in the middle of all the action. While he may be the smallest of the litter, he is just as big as his brothers when it comes to love, adventure, and a good time. Equally to his love for play he easily settles down for quiet time to chew on his bone or to snuggle up and adore his humans while watching TV.

Bean rides well in the car, and is doing great with his leash training and learning his basic commands. He already knows “sit”, "down", "come" and “drop it”! He also LOVES a good bath. Maybe he’d be into a visit to a lake or pond? As long as it’s with you, he surely wouldn’t mind.

If you're looking for a well rounded pup with lots of love to give, and some of the sweetest eyes to stare into, inquire about our boy Bean today!

Cowboy is one tall, handsome hound! With those long legs, gorgeous tricolor coat, floppy ears, and soulful eyes, this boy is impossible to overlook. And at around 45 pounds, he’s proof that a little extra legroom can make a whole lot of hound! Those legs go on forever and give him that elegant slim appearance that makes you want to let him out to run and run and run. He smiles constantly, and he can’t wait to play with other dogs. He is social and so much fun!

Adopting a dog with children in Harrisonburg

Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.

Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.

Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
