1. Carmella

Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 83 mi from Harrisonburg

Carmella is a Pit Bull mix. She needs a home without other dogs, although she does well with kids and cats. Carmella does enjoy car rides and is leash and crate trained. She is a 'runner' if she gets the chance, so containment in a secure yard or on a leash is a must.

Carmella is spayed and vaccinated and ready for her new home!

3. Lacey

Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Harrisonburg

☀️Lacey is a Super Star☀️

Lacey is one of those very special souls that lights up a room and brings joy just by being in her presence.

Lacey is cuddly, snuggly, and oh so sweet! She is a 5 year old boxer mix, housebroken, crate trained, about 45 pounds, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

She is good with other dogs, as always we do require a meet and greet with other dogs in the home.

When taken into the cat room at the animal shelter, Lacey was intimidated by the hissing kitties and backed away. We feel that is a good indicator that she may be able to live harmoniously live with cats.

Young · Male · Hound / Australian Shepherd / Mixed (short coat) · 84 mi from Harrisonburg

They call it puppy LOVE!
please note that Diablo is not at the animal shelter and is not a sponsored adoption. He is in foster care with our Rescue group.

Diablo is a 3 month old, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, mixed breed puppy, adoptable through Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter. He has a huge personality and has loved everyone he’s met. We’ve learned he loves toys - tennis balls, stuffed animals, tug of war, squeaky toys. He isn’t picky, he just loves to play. He’s working on potty training but seems to be a quick learner. He is dog friendly and has a ton of puppy energy.

8. Prius

Adult (1 year 5 months) · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Prius came from the same area of the county as another dog we recently took in who was named after a car so logically we felt we needed to keep the theme going! Prius has had no leash walking experience and refill has probably been kept on a tie out because he loves walking in circles running around and around the human who is taking care of him. As much as we would love for him to go back to a family, we hope it will be a better situation if he is reclined. He is active, and we really are in a quandary about what his possible breed mix could be. Best guess is something active and one that will need lots of directed activity. If you’re looking for fun, trainable, and a dog that’s alert and wants to play, consider Prius if he is not reclaimed.

Adult (2 years) · Female · Boxer / Mixed · 90 mi from Harrisonburg

This little girl was left at a short-staffed, over-crowded shelter and was on the euthanasia list. Because she was pregnant, staff made a hard push to get her out as they could not safely deliver her pups in the shelter. She is now in a foster home at AFH where she can deliver her pups in a warm, loving home. This sweet girl is friendly, loving and calm. She is OK with other dogs and a bit shy, but warms up quickly. 13. Taz

Adult · Male · Chihuahua · 45 mi from Harrisonburg

Taz is in foster care! His foster wrote a bio describing him: Taz is part cuddle-bug and part energizer bunny. Some of his favorite things are playing fetch, going on walks (or runs!), getting belly rubs, and cuddling with his humans. He has bursts of high energy but also enjoys long naps in sunspots. He would do well as an only dog! He also likes playing with other small dogs, but he can play hard and rough and has a tendency to steal toys and beds, so that would need to be managed. Taz is super affectionate. He wants to love and be loved and craves lots of attention. He will stay close to your side and remind you if you forget to pet him.

Read more about Taz

He doesn’t like being home alone for too long—he’d rather be with you! Someone who works remote/hybrid or is retired may be a great fit. Taz is doing awesome with house training and doesn’t have accidents when on a regular schedule. He walks great on a leash and learns new things very quickly.

Adult · Male · Beagle · 94 mi from Harrisonburg

Introducing Otto, the perfect pup! Weighing in at just 20 pounds and about 5 years old, Otto is looking for a home that is active, fun and loves to play. He is great with male and female adults, all aged kids, all sized dogs, and even cats. Otto is crate trained, house trained, and has learned how to be a snuggly indoor beagle boy, with no bad habits. Otto did not have the best start in life, so he looks a little older than he is, but he has plenty of spunk and loves to go hard, (but then go home to nap!!). Otto’s only requirement is for a person/family that will give him lots of attention and stuffies. This boy cherishes his toys!

17. Leo

Adult (2 years) · Male · Bichon Frise / Mixed (long coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Leo arrived as a stray, wearing a collar, and sporting a microchip. Unfortunately, the registration is not updated and we have not been able to reach his registered owner. We will dig a little deeper and contact the facility that inserted his microchip to see if we can find out where mom might be.

Leo appears to be house trained, but he is not neutered, snd he does like to lift his leg to mark.

Read more about Leo

although it appears he’s been recently groomed, his tummy fur is stained with the appearance of a belly band being used to control his marking. At 3 1/2 years old, even with a neuter which is required by Virginia code for all adoptions, it is possible he will always be a marker, and they never learn not to pee inappropriately. We feel this is an important note for a prospective adapter to know upfront. Although he is adorable, when humans reach for him, he can be nippy and skittish, so we feel a home with no children will be best as he could easily be in a skate artist and takeoff running again. The microchip information lists him as a bichon frise mix. He was recently trimmed or clipped, but we don’t know if his family did it or if it was a professional groomer. We have no way of knowing where his origin might be, but we know he would like to get home!

21. Molly

Young (8 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Molly was brought to the shelter by her owner who said four dogs was too many. We think there must’ve been a little more to it than that since she is eight months old and on the shy side, but we never know what’s going on at peoples homes before dogs come to us. She is not an outgoing dog, but is receptive when people love her and encourage her to try new things. Adult (6 years) · Male · Hound / Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

Saint is feeling so much better now that he has been treated for an infection of unknown origin, and allowed to move around at his own pace. He appears to be a boxer/ hound mix, who arrived in our care already neutered, and under very sad circumstances. He had been abandoned by his former owner in the woods in the neighboring county. It’s sad that the shelter is only 2 miles from the home where he originated, yet he ended up all on his own in the woods. At some point, he ended up with injury to his side, and that is what we have been treating. The good news is that after 10 days of treatment, he is well on his way to being healed. He even has a Foster who wind up to take him in in just a couple more days. Saint is beautifully house trained, fine with other dogs, and fine with cats. Adult (3 years) · Female · Hound / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 82 mi from Harrisonburg

From her foster mom: "The name her family gave her is Bella. Because we have had so many dogs with this name at the shelter, her shelter name is Arabella. But those of you who have known me for a while know why she is Bella at our house. Around here we think that name is very special. She was brought to the shelter because her mom was having medical issues and could not care for her. Between her name and knowing that "there but for the grace of God go I".... I wanted to bring her home to foster. I am hoping that this news will give her mom comfort. At the shelter, Bella was very sweet and loving. But also very quiet. Since she has been with us, she has reminded me that she is only 3 years old. She is funny and playful. She likes toys and chew bones. And while she is fine with my two small seniors, this new side of her shows me that she would probably love to be in a home with another sweet, playful dog more her size. I can just see her chasing around the backyard with a good buddy. She is crate trained and house trained. She sleeps all night in her crate without a peep. She also has good kitchen manners. She is watchful but not obnoxious. And no counter surfing. Do you know anyone who is looking for a beautiful, sweet, loving, playful companion? If so please have them fill out a no obligation application so that a time can be set for a meeting."

30. Abby

Adult · Female · American Bulldog / Terrier / Mixed · 45 mi from Harrisonburg

Meet Abby! She's the sweetest House Hippo you will ever come across. Abby is a BIG girl at 87 lbs. but she is so sweet. She has spent a lot of time at Camp Merricks and has never been a problem in any of the play groups she has been in. She was a momma dog for a long time, and she's now very happy to never have puppies again. Abby LOVES water. She will roll around and splash in tubs and small pools... just like a hippo! What Abby REALLY wants is to be inside, on the couch, snoozing or spending time with you. Even when she is at Camp, she is always looking for an opportunity to go inside.

Abby's only fault is she pulls like a train on leash. She wants to go where she wants to go, which is back inside. If you don't need to walk your dog everywhere, and just want a house companion who will take up a little space, Abby might be your girl. She's just SO loveable. Meet Abby today and see if she's the House Hippo you didn't know you needed!

Why adopt an adult dog in Harrisonburg

An adult dog's personality is fully formed, so the rescue can tell you how they are with people, other pets and busy households. Many have lived in foster homes and are already house-trained.

Grown dogs need less supervision than puppies and often know the basics, like sitting and walking on a leash, which suits people who work or have young children.
