2. Carmello

Senior · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed

WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS? Meet 13-year-old Carmello, the pit mix who apparently missed the memo that seniors are supposed to slow down! This handsome gentleman is 13 going on 3! He's playful, energetic, loves his toys, enjoys car rides, and walks like a gentleman on a leash. Basically, he's got his retirement plan all figured out... and it involves FUN! Carmello is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. He LOVES attention and would be thrilled to have a family to spoil him with all the love he deserves! Cats? We're not quite sure how he feels about them, so slow, patient introductions are best.

Read more about Carmello

Kids? We think he would do best with older kids, maybe 10 plus, who understand boundaries and know that even the most lovable old man needs a little personal space sometimes! He can also get a bit overstimulated at times and will do best with an understanding and knowledgeable owner. Carmello has plenty of life, love, and squeaky-toy destruction left in him. He's looking for a family who will see past his age and recognize the fun-loving, affectionate boy waiting to steal their hearts. Senior dogs are seriously underrated! Come meet Carmello and give this distinguished gentleman the happily-ever-after he deserves! Interested in adopting? Adult (3 years) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Paige was surrendered to the local animal shelter when her owner was no longer able to care for her. She is the mama to our puppies Macaroni, Casserole and Butter Bean. Paige is amazingly sweet and loves to be around people. Here is what we know so far:> great with all people, young/old, man/woman> does get along well with other dogs> does do well with cats> loves toys and some good zoomies around the house and yard> loves car rides / is a great passenger> no problems with bath or nail trims> she does well on the leash and doesn't pull hard but will need some more training to stop zick-zacking in front of your feet> couch cuddles? yes please!Paige does entertain herself well with a couple toys so we think a home with our without dogs, either one is fine.

26. Rex

Adult · Male · Pug / Eurasier / Mixed

Meet Rex! Five-year-old Chihuahua mix Rex is a little guy who is still trying to figure out this whole new world around him. Rex came to us through a seizure case and sadly, he wasn't living in the best conditions. He arrived with three other dogs, and while he seems to be dog friendly, he is very nervous and unsure of new people and new experiences. A dog test will be required with any current dogs in the home. Rex may need a couple of meet-and-greets before he feels comfortable enough to show you who he really is. He is unsure about affection right now, and that's okay. He needs someone who understands that trust takes time and will allow him plenty of decompression time without asking too much of him too quickly.

Read more about Rex

We're looking for a patient adopter who will give Rex the opportunity to learn what it means to simply be a dog — to explore, play, relax, receive some lovins, and discover that the world isn't as scary as he once thought. We are unsure how Rex feels about children, so the whole family will need to come to the meet-and-greet. We are also unsure about cats, and super slow, patient introductions would be best. Rex is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. Rex doesn't need someone who expects him to come out of his shell immediately. He needs someone willing to sit beside that shell and patiently wait for him to realize he's safe. Once he does, we hope he'll discover just how wonderful life can be. Interested in adopting? Adult · Female · Chihuahua / Eurasier / Mixed

Meet Skye Sweet 4-year-old Chihuahua mix Skye is looking for someone who will show her that the world isn't such a scary place. Skye came to us through a seizure case and sadly, she wasn't living in the best conditions. Because of her past, she is very under-socialized and nervous about the world around her. She has a sweet demeanor and truly wants love, but she's still learning what to do when someone gives her the affection she deserves. Skye came in with three other dogs and seems to be dog friendly. A dog test will be required with any current dogs in the home. We aren't sure how she feels about cats, so super slow and patient introductions would be best.

Read more about Skye

We are also unsure how Skye will feel around children, so we ask that the whole family come to the meet and greet. Skye isn't looking for a perfect home. She's looking for a patient one. A home willing to give her time to decompress, move at her own pace, and gently show her that people can be kind, life can be safe, and the world isn't all bad. Once Skye learns she's safe, we think there's going to be a whole lot of love waiting to come out. Skye is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. 29. Pup

Adult · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed

MEET PUP! Sometimes the dogs who haven't had the best start in life are the ones who appreciate a little love the most. Meet 3-year-old Pup, a 30-ish pound Pit Mix who is ready to discover just how wonderful life can be! Pup can be a little shy when he first meets you, but give him a little time and patience and his spunky, curious personality starts to shine. Once he knows he's safe, Pup absolutely LOVES being loved on! Outside is where Pup really gets to show his curious side. He wants to check out everything around him and take in all the sights and smells. He also walks well on leash, is housetrained, and does pretty well riding in the car.

Read more about Pup

Pup has unfortunately not had the best life before coming to us and was kept outside most of the time. We'd love nothing more than to find him a family who will show him what it means to be safe, loved, included, and part of a family. Dogs: Pup is dog selective and seems to prefer female dogs. A dog test will be required with any current dog in the home. Cats: His previous owner said he was interested in cats but generally indifferent toward them. As always, slow and patient introductions are best. Kids: He has only been around older children, so we recommend a home with older kids who can respect his space while he gets comfortable. Pup is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. This sweet boy may need a little time to come out of his shell, but we think the family willing to give him that time is going to discover one pretty special dog. Could you be the person who shows Pup that his best days are still ahead? Come meet Pup and give him the chance to be your new best friend! Interested in adopting? Meet Ozzy! Ozzy is a 3-year-old Beagle mix who is still learning that the world isn't such a scary place. He is a timid, nervous boy who may need some time—and possibly a few meet-and-greets—to feel comfortable and understand that he is safe. Once Ozzy starts getting some love, he slowly begins to soften and show you the sweet boy underneath that nervous exterior. He just needs someone willing to be patient, give him time, and let him come out of his shell at his own pace. Ozzy needs a home with children 12 years or older. We are unsure how he feels about cats, so very slow and patient introductions will be needed to make sure everyone is comfortable.

Adopting a dog in Orange County

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
