1. Mango Grace
Senior · Female · Boxer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Meet Mango Grace!
This girl does not her let age stop her! She has lots of spunk and is 11 years young! Mango Grace is playful and even sits for treats. She loves to play fetch, but there is no guarantee that she will bring the ball back lol. She is crate trained, mostly housebroken, smart, and highly entertaining.
She is approximately 45 pounds, spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and microchipped. She is probably not a good fit for small dogs and no cats. Mango Grace does get along with other dogs, but as always, we require a meet and greet. Please, please adopt this girl and watch her have fun, fun fun til her owner takes her tennis ball away.

2. Lacey
Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed (short coat)

☀️Lacey is a Super Star☀️
Lacey is one of those very special souls that lights up a room and brings joy just by being in her presence.
Lacey is cuddly, snuggly, and oh so sweet! She is a 5 year old boxer mix, housebroken, crate trained, about 45 pounds, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.
She is good with other dogs, as always we do require a meet and greet with other dogs in the home.
When taken into the cat room at the animal shelter, Lacey was intimidated by the hissing kitties and backed away. We feel that is a good indicator that she may be able to live harmoniously live with cats.

4. Diablo
Young · Male · Hound / Australian Shepherd / Mixed (short coat)

They call it puppy LOVE!
please note that Diablo is not at the animal shelter and is not a sponsored adoption. He is in foster care with our Rescue group.
Diablo is a 3 month old, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, mixed breed puppy, adoptable through Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter. He has a huge personality and has loved everyone he’s met. We’ve learned he loves toys - tennis balls, stuffed animals, tug of war, squeaky toys. He isn’t picky, he just loves to play. He’s working on potty training but seems to be a quick learner. He is dog friendly and has a ton of puppy energy.

7. Prius
Adult (1 year 5 months) · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Prius came from the same area of the county as another dog we recently took in who was named after a car so logically we felt we needed to keep the theme going! Prius has had no leash walking experience and refill has probably been kept on a tie out because he loves walking in circles running around and around the human who is taking care of him. As much as we would love for him to go back to a family, we hope it will be a better situation if he is reclined. He is active, and we really are in a quandary about what his possible breed mix could be. Best guess is something active and one that will need lots of directed activity. If you’re looking for fun, trainable, and a dog that’s alert and wants to play, consider Prius if he is not reclaimed.

8. Leo
Adult (2 years) · Male · Bichon Frise / Mixed (long coat)

Leo arrived as a stray, wearing a collar, and sporting a microchip. Unfortunately, the registration is not updated and we have not been able to reach his registered owner. We will dig a little deeper and contact the facility that inserted his microchip to see if we can find out where mom might be.
Leo appears to be house trained, but he is not neutered, snd he does like to lift his leg to mark.
Read more about Leo
although it appears he’s been recently groomed, his tummy fur is stained with the appearance of a belly band being used to control his marking. At 3 1/2 years old, even with a neuter which is required by Virginia code for all adoptions, it is possible he will always be a marker, and they never learn not to pee inappropriately. We feel this is an important note for a prospective adapter to know upfront. Although he is adorable, when humans reach for him, he can be nippy and skittish, so we feel a home with no children will be best as he could easily be in a skate artist and takeoff running again. The microchip information lists him as a bichon frise mix. He was recently trimmed or clipped, but we don’t know if his family did it or if it was a professional groomer. We have no way of knowing where his origin might be, but we know he would like to get home!

9. Molly
Young (8 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (short coat)

Molly was brought to the shelter by her owner who said four dogs was too many. We think there must’ve been a little more to it than that since she is eight months old and on the shy side, but we never know what’s going on at peoples homes before dogs come to us. She is not an outgoing dog, but is receptive when people love her and encourage her to try new things. Working on house training is always a project for us, but in her case we’re also working on confidence and teaching her that leash walking is a good thing!

10. Linus
Adult (1 year 7 months) · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat)

When Linus first arrived, he wasn’t sure about us. It took a few days to earn his trust, but now? He’s outgoing, friendly, and playful. He’s learned the routine and is eager to play with the other dogs — they’ve been a huge comfort to him. We love working with dogs who show us what helps them, and Linus is thriving with canine friends. Not bad for being with us for only 7 days! >PLEASE NOTE: This pet has been posted by Friends of Campbell County Animal Control, Rustburg, VA. Loretta has declared that she is ready to find a home! Her heartworm positive status has been rectified, after two very manageable treatments at a vet office, and she is scheduled to be spayed, and happy to be in her foster home with other active hounds and beagles. Loretta is five years old, house trained, and has decided that couch potato fits her just fine! This beautiful girl has been waiting for months to be heartworm free so that a family would be happy to consider her for their next adventure dog companion. She loves children, does absolutely fine with cats, and as far as size: perfect. Not too big not too small. Please let Loretta come into your heart the way she comes into ours! She is absolutely stupendously perfect!

12. Saint
Adult (6 years) · Male · Hound / Boxer / Mixed (short coat)

Saint is feeling so much better now that he has been treated for an infection of unknown origin, and allowed to move around at his own pace. He appears to be a boxer/ hound mix, who arrived in our care already neutered, and under very sad circumstances. He had been abandoned by his former owner in the woods in the neighboring county. It’s sad that the shelter is only 2 miles from the home where he originated, yet he ended up all on his own in the woods. At some point, he ended up with injury to his side, and that is what we have been treating. The good news is that after 10 days of treatment, he is well on his way to being healed. He even has a Foster who wind up to take him in in just a couple more days. Saint is beautifully house trained, fine with other dogs, and fine with cats. He has been updated with vaccines and heartworm testing!

13. Arabella
Adult (3 years) · Female · Hound / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

From her foster mom: "The name her family gave her is Bella. Because we have had so many dogs with this name at the shelter, her shelter name is Arabella. But those of you who have known me for a while know why she is Bella at our house. Around here we think that name is very special. She was brought to the shelter because her mom was having medical issues and could not care for her. Between her name and knowing that "there but for the grace of God go I".... I wanted to bring her home to foster. I am hoping that this news will give her mom comfort. At the shelter, Bella was very sweet and loving. But also very quiet. Since she has been with us, she has reminded me that she is only 3 years old. She is funny and playful. She likes toys and chew bones. And while she is fine with my two small seniors, this new side of her shows me that she would probably love to be in a home with another sweet, playful dog more her size. I can just see her chasing around the backyard with a good buddy. She is crate trained and house trained. She sleeps all night in her crate without a peep. She also has good kitchen manners. She is watchful but not obnoxious. And no counter surfing. Do you know anyone who is looking for a beautiful, sweet, loving, playful companion? If so please have them fill out a no obligation application so that a time can be set for a meeting."

14. Ox
Adult (1 year 6 months) · Male · Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat)

Ox, 1-1/2 years old and 55 pounds, is a gorgeous black-and-golden boy. Ox appears to have been well cared for before coming in as a stray. He gets a little burst of happy excitement when he first steps into the play yard, but once he stretches his legs, his gentle, easygoing nature shines right through. He is an absolute dream on the leash, walking softly by your side and leaning in for every head scratch and chin rub you’re willing to give. He has been well-mannered and loving—a Superstar on leash. Polite, gentle, and an absolute bliss to take on daily walks. He is low maintenance: Moderate energy and low grooming needs make him a wonderful fit for all types of homes—even first-time dog owners! He is eager to learn: Smart, attentive, and excited to master basic obedience alongside his new best friend. He is familiar with a crate.

15. Rico
Senior (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Beagle / Mixed (medium coat)

Heartwarming and touching—senior dog Rico needed something to soften his bones, and sometimes a blanket just doesn’t do it. We are so grateful for the donation of this beautiful lavender fluffy bed today, just in time to share with Rico! Rico came to us with a unpleasant skin infection, lots of hair loss, infected eyes, and infected ears. He’s getting the works as far as medication, but we don’t want to stop there: we want to give him love and attention and anything else he might need to recover and be a glorious pet! He is around 40 pounds, neutered. housetrained, and fine with other dogs and cats. Is he the kind of dog that might fit beautifully in your home as a foster dog while we get his skin straightened out? We hope so! Please let us know if you would like to help us out by taking them in! His mom is having some medical issues and had to give him up so she could treat herself.

17. Claire
Adult (6 years 2 months) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat)

Claire is one of our favorites!
Read more about Claire
Following her stray hold, we took her to the vet to get her checked out, and discovered she was not only heartworm positive, but also positive for two tickborne diseases, and had horrible ear infections in both of her ears. This girl must have been in such misery, and yet she maintained her good attitude, her playfulness, and wanted everyone to pay attention to her. Claire is about six years old, (best guess), and is spayed, as we can see her green tattoo from the Spay/Neuter Clinic showing clearly on her belly when she flops to the grass, rolls over, and asks for belly rubs! This girl is amazing, smart, (does a great sit!) and housetrained. She is surely missed by her family! We have discovered Claire has no patience with many dogs, and is going to be very selective about who she lives with. She is fabulous with toddlers and children, but needs no other animals in her home. She is heartworm positive and is being treated for them via the "slowkill" heartworm treatment method. She also has badly inflamed ears, due to chronic ear infections and we are helping her find great relief from that pain, too. We know there’s a home for her somewhere! Apply to adopt and let’s get her into a home!

18. Biscuit
Adult (7 years) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat)

Biscuit arrived as a stray, healthy and social, but without leash-walking skills, and we had hoped he would be home by now! He appears to be housetrained, and he loves having humans around to show him attention. He has learned that the only way to get outside for fun and exercise is to wait patiently for a volunteer to come to his kennel run with a leash in hand so he can enjoy not only human presence, but also enjoy the landscape and smells all around. We think that Biscuit will be a fun companion, and are enjoying getting to know him.

20. Emma
Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Update: it’s hard to imagine all that this little dog has gone through in her short lifespan, but being abandoned, hit by a car, then left for dead for two weeks without anyone looking for her has given her the right to be distrustful of the human race. And yet newly renamed “Emma” Has nothing but love and licks for the humans who are caring for her, seeing her through not only two surgeries, but extensive medical care following those surgeries. Emma has such a story she could tell us, but she prefers to look ahead rather than back, and remains optimistic that she will heal completely and find a wonderful home. (Emma suffered broken bones and at the end of August received FHO surgery on her left leg, and a rod and pins placed in her right leg during extensive surgery in Charlottesville at Virginia Veterinary Specialists. follow up surgery was done just a couple weeks later because one of the pin placements was irritating her incision.) We feel she is now on the road to full recovery, although she now faces weekly rehab appointments to help her regain strength in her legs. Emma has been cared for by our community, including a volunteer who drives her to Virginia Vet for her appointments. There, a local Vet Hospital, who adore her, and foster families who are willing to give up their time to see her through her daily requirements. Emma weighs under 50 pounds, is house trained, Gets along with every dog she has met, and feels cats are just an extension of her own family. She has been gentle at every corner of her journey, grateful for everything being done for her, and willing to do whatever is asked of her. It’s been a rough road for her. But we want to see her through it. Let us know if you would like to be part of her family, and make her an extension of yours.

LITTLE DOG has declared that she wants a new name! Her foster dad felt she wants to be called Emma, and be the namesake of the young woman who cared for her while she was at Altavista during her initial two week medical care time. We think it fits her beautifully, and she responds well to it! So everyone, put aside her Little Dog name and let us introduce Emma to you! Emma is about a year-old, and after being hit by a car and totally ignored for what the vet guessed was one to two weeks before treatment was found for her, surgery has been done, and she is now a happy, healthy girl recovering beautifully.

22. Clint
Adult (2 years) · Male · Beagle (short coat)

Clint came in as a stray and he is not a fan of being at the shelter. He's very afraid of all the strange sounds and barking. Plus, he's not figured out that volunteers are his friends. We have no doubt he'll come around with lots of gentle attention. He's already made it outside which is a huge step forward.

25. Buddy
Adult (3 years) · Male · Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed (short coat)

Buddy is such a fun little dude searching for his best friend. He’s silly and playful but also loves some good scratches and a snuggle in a blanket, lap included is even better! He is still learning a lot about the world and how to be the best boy he can, but he is so quick and eager to learn. He loves to be outside and his personality comes out quickly if there’s sunshine and grass involved. Buddy also does really well inside and enjoys crate time. His adoption fee is $250.

26. Wiley
Adult (2 years 1 month) · Male · Shepherd / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat)

GIANT EAR ALERT! Here is what happens when your floppy ears get excited about people wanting to spend time with you! Wiley loves stretching his long legs, chasing toys, and hanging out in the playyard. He has been very interested in meeting other dogs, although he’s not had an opportunity to interact with an yet. He loves chasing the ball, bringing it back, running and jumping and just being a regular goofball. Volunteers think he’s pretty cool and we think you will too! He recently had a day at a volunteer's bome and did wonderful. Not one mess, snuggled with her roommate and respected the gate boundaries even though he could jump them if he wanted. He completely relaxed and was the perfect guest.

27. Zita, aka Pat: Not at shelter
Adult (4 years 1 month) · Female · Great Pyrenees (long coat)

She is a beauty, now that her mats have been shaved off, but Zita still has some healing to do, as her skin is sensitive and raw in many places from her original ill-kempt state. Zita is good with other dogs, and loves the humans who are caring for her in her foster home. We have learned that she does guard the place she is sleeping, her food bowl on occasion, and may be grumpy with other dogs are near treats. For this reason, we feel young children are not a good match. We see no guardian instincts in her, but only pet-quality traits.

28. Jay
Adult (4 years 1 month) · Male · Hound (short coat)

Jay had a great walk yesterday — and we also learned he’s one smart cookie! Heading away from the shelter? Perfect leash manners. Heading back? Not so fast. He let his volunteer know in no uncertain terms that this was not the right direction. Lots of hemming and hawing. Once inside, he put on the brakes at the door too. But Jay’s a good boy — as soon as he spotted the treats waiting, he marched right into his run. Fun, sweet, and clever. Loves toys! Jay keeps us on our toes and makes us laugh.

29. Baby Bear
Young (10 months) · Male · German Shepherd Dog (medium coat)

BABY BEAR is making huge progress with his training, and is learning not to jump on volunteers, and to show affection more appropriately than just leaping madly on to his human of the moment.
Read more about Baby Bear
He has completely recovered from his bout of Parvovirus, and is putting on weight, and enjoying a routine at the shelter. We would love to have him in a home with an experienced family. Due to his occasional resource guarding, which can be controlled by a knowledgeable family, we would like him to go to a home with older kids, or no kids at all. Are you experienced with German Shepherds and their propensity to nibble and be mouthy? If so, you would be a great possibility for his new family! He is under a year-old, a great size, and very smart and willing to please! We have trainers who would be willing to give you advice and work with you as he makes the transition from shelter to pet. Apply here: https://www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org/info/adoption
Update: Baby Bear is full of life and his energy is now that of a young puppy who needs an outlet, guidance, and training. It is so good to see a dog full of himself after being deathly ill. we need to address behavioral issues regarding resource guarding, as that is a concern right now. currently he is recommended only for experienced doctors and one willing to consult with a trainer.
***
Baby Bear was brought to us by his family because he was sick. They had never taken him into a vet, and that was the first thing we did, after he had been signed over to us. at the Animal Emergency Clinic, he was diagnosed with Parvovirus in addition to having a heavy load of parasites, and dehydration and emaciation. This boy was in rough shape! 24 hours at the emergency hospital, followed by three days at Altavista Animal Clinic, has made a huge difference for him, and he is now back at the shelter where we are treating him like the special little boy he truly is. We are helping him gain weight, and feel good about being alive! For a dog who was sick, he is pretty social, and is willing to let us make friends with him. If you are a German Shepherd lover, this might be just the dog for you! We were told he is a little iffy about food, and that is not unusual in dogs that have not had enough to eat. We are hoping he will bounce back quickly so he can find his perfect new home with someone who will love and care for him the way he’s so deserves.

30. Ruby
Adult (2 years 11 months) · Female · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Shepherd / Mixed

Ruby's family would like to rehome her to a knowledgeable new caregiver willing to work with her reactivity toward other dogs. (She is not spayed.) We were told that Ruby was saved from euthanasia from another shelter, but her adopter was not aware of her reactivity toward other dogs. (The breed mix would dictate that it is not an unusual trait.) If you love the challenge that comes from a dog needing lots of training and re-direction to handle reactivity, then Ruby might be a great choice for you. Here is what her current mom says about Ruby:
Ruby was given a second chance and has been loved deeply by us. She is the sweetest girl and deserves the best life. I know she will make an amazing companion (more than just inside the house) once some of her behaviors are corrected. She is fine with older children, and may be okay with other dogs, but is very interested in cats, and we are not comfortable introducing her to them."

After reviewing and approving and applicant (on paper), we meet with them and all members of their house hold including other resident dogs. We offer one week trials to ensure this decision is in the best interest of both human and animal. If all parties are confident upon meeting, then we have a contract which also states that if any anytime they are unable to keep the animal, that they will return in to our organization. Adopting a dog in Pittsylvania County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
