12. Bug

Puppy (2 months 26 days) · Female · Pug · 33 mi from Tacoma

Animal Information: Bug is just an itty bitty "pug mix" that found herself in need of rescue. Who were we to say no? We are confident that little mug will get a lot of attention, and can't wait to meet her!

Foster Profile:
Bug was named by my kids, and it turned out to be the perfect fit! She may be tiny (2lbs right now!), but she’s absolutely full of spunk. Bug loves chasing her furry foster siblings around, even though they’re all significantly larger than she is. Her favorite companion is our Doberman, and it’s hilarious watching her run as fast as her little legs will carry her just to keep up with him as he casually walks across the lawn.

Read more about Bug

Bug is doing excellent with both crate and potty training. As a small-breed dog, potty training will likely be her biggest challenge, which is understandable when your bladder is about the size of a grape. She’s making great progress, though, and with frequent potty breaks, she’s primarily doing her business outside in the yard. She can hold it for up to six hours overnight, so a home with easy access to a convenient potty area would be ideal.

Bug loves playing with my children and is friendly with our cat, too. With her playful personality, tiny size, and big-dog confidence, she’s sure to make a wonderful pocket-sized companion for one very lucky family!

Adoption Info: Adoption fee is $575 which includes spay/neuter (on contract, if applicable), core vaccinations Rabies and DPPV per AVMA standards, any indicated preventative care, microchip with lifetime registration, and recent health check with a veterinarian. 13. Pumpkin

Puppy (6 months) · Female · Chihuahua / Beagle / Mixed (short coat) · 30 mi from Tacoma

Meet Pumpkin! This 6 month old chihuahua mix is curious and very playful. She can be cautious and shy with new people or situations but opens up quickly and builds confidence fast. She loves playing with other dogs and would thrive in a home with another small dog to play with and snuggle with. She is always happy happy happy and makes everyone smile when she’s bouncing around and giving kisses constantly. She does really well in her kennel for meal times and when left home alone for a few hours at a time. She sleeps all through the night. She is still working on potty training but is extremely motivated by treats, so is getting the hang of it. She’s not a purse chihuahua and doesn’t like to be carried around much in general, but will follow her foster family all around the house and loves to be nearby chewing on a yak cheese or throwing a toy around entertaining herself. She has mastered the skill of guarding the porch from squirrels and Amazon delivery people and barks fiercely (in chihuahua) to let everyone know she’s doing her job, but doesn’t bark excessively at nothing.

Chai is a sweet little guy who came to us with his two siblings Pumpkin and Autumn. These adorable siblings did not come from great beginnings but are doing wonderfully in their foster homes. They are likely Chihuahua mixes, around 6-7 months old and about 8-10 lbs. They will grow to about 12-14 lbs as adults.

Sweet Chai is full of puppy energy and loves to play and explore. He’s curious, happy, and always up for a little fun. He also has a softer side and enjoys attention and cuddles. He’s still learning about the world around him and would love a family to grow up with and call his own.

Read more about Chai

Chai can be a bit timid about the world and it is best for him to be in a home with a yard. 16. Merv

Adult (1 year 7 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 33 mi from Tacoma

Animal Information: Merv was brought into the Stanislaus Shelter as part of a hoarding case. He was living in a home with 30 dogs, and not being cared for. Despite having never left that property before, Merv was sweet with shelter and veterinary staff. We were happy to give him a ticket to a better life here in Seattle, and can't wait to get to know him

Foster Profile:

Merv is getting neutered on 11/4 and will be available for adoption after recovery!

Read more about Merv

Foster Merv (aka Merlin) arrived two weeks ago and is slowly settling in. He didn’t come from great beginnings and that’s pretty obvious in his mannerisms. He’s pretty fearful and will sometimes cower when his foster mom reaches down to pet him, but little by little, he’s gaining confidence and learning that he’s safe and loved.

He’s doing great going potty outside and is mostly quiet in his crate. When Merv first arrived, he had no idea how to walk on a leash. Now he gets SO excited when the leash comes out and absolutely loves his walks! Watching his confidence grow has been pretty special.

Merv will need a quieter home with a patient family who will give him time to continue building trust. We think he’d really benefit from another confident dog to show him the ropes. A fenced yard would also be ideal, because while Merv now loves his walks, he has yet to decide that pooping on a leash is acceptable.

Merv is such a sweet boy, and with a little time, patience and love, we know he’s going to blossom into an absolute gem of a dog.

Adoption Info: Adoption fee is $575 which includes spay/neuter, core vaccinations Rabies and DPPV per AVMA standards, any indicated preventative care, heartworm test, microchip with lifetime registration, and recent health check with a veterinarian. 18. Gus

Young (7 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 30 mi from Tacoma

Meet Gus!

Sweet Gus is a 7-8 month Chihuahua mix pup and weighs around 8-9 lbs.

Gus is a very playful puppy who has blossomed as he has come out of his shell. He is timid around new people and needs a little time to warm up. He would do great with another dog who can show him the ropes. He is house trained and sleeps through the night but does occasionally mark - this should be improved once he is neutered (he is scheduled for this).

Read more about Gus

He loves toys and treats but people are his favorite and he will be your little shadow around the house. He is crate trained and we have left him alone 4-5 hours with no issues. He can guard high value treats like bones but does not show this behavior with treats of lower value. He will do best in a home with older kids (over 12) for this reason.

He is wary of loud or unfamiliar noises and will sometimes bark at them so he would do best in a home or townhome.

19. Mickey

Adult (3 years 1 month) · Male · Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat) · 30 mi from Tacoma

Meet Mickey!

Mickey is an adorable 3 year old Shih Tzu. He did not come from a place where he was well cared for and arrived with us quite neglected. He is doing well in his foster home and is ready to find his forever home.

Read more about Mickey

Mickey needs a little bit of time to trust you, but once he does he’s a very cuddly and affectionate boy! He loves to push his face into your chest and gently nibble on your hands, which is very endearing.
He loves playing indoor fetch with soft toys and actually brings them back to you to throw again! He’s treat motivated and doing a great job learning commands. He walks very nicely on leash and enjoys exploring the neighborhood.
When there’s nothing else going on, he’s quite happy to nap on the couch or in his dog bed. He sleeps quietly through the night in his X-pen, where he also does very well being left alone for a few hours.
Mickey had a few potty accidents during his first week in foster, but none since then. He occasionally barks at noises outside, but he quiets down quickly.
He rides very well in the car, and he did great with a fear-free groomer who went slowly and gained his trust.
Mickey would probably do well with one or more doggie companions and possibly with cats. He came from a home with two other dogs, and he got along well with them when we brought them together for a reunion.
The biggest challenge for Mickey is that he distrusts men. After 4 weeks with us, he still sometimes growls at his foster dad, but only when he is left alone with him. We suspect he would come around to a male adopter more quickly if there were another confident dog in the home to reassure him that he is safe. He would probably struggle in a home where there are frequent male visitors.

Mickey is not well suited for a home with kids. He will find their movements too unpredictable.

Young (8 months) · Male · Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat) · 30 mi from Tacoma

Meet Sancho!

Little Sancho is only 8 months old and has not had the greatest life. He was found as a stray in a rural area and it seems he had been fending for himself for some time. He is in a foster home now and doing well.

Read more about Sancho

Sancho is a bit wary of new people but once he trusts you he is an affectionate and sweet boy who loves to cuddle with you. He allows touch all over, picking up, touching his paws and loves to lay on you while he takes a nice nap. He knows his name and has pretty good recall now. He eats well but will hide any treat you give him to save it for later - a behavior we often see with dogs who have not had consistent access to food.

Sancho is young and unsure about the world. He does not like be alone and needs a moment to get used to new people. He will need a patient and loving family to help him with this. Continued socialization and helping him feel safe will be important for him. He does not like car rides (he get a bit car sick) and is not yet fully potty trained. He is doing well with leash training but can sometimes bark at other dogs when he feels worried. We can help with continued training in this area.

Sancho will do best in a more quiet home without young children. Chaos and noise are just not his thing. He is such a nice little guy but just needs a little TLC while he is adjusting and learning.

Animal Information: Chili was brought into the Stanislaus shelter in California as an owner surrender with a senior dog. The senior was adopted and she was left behind. This poor girl was so shut down and terrified that she was immediately at risk for euthanasia, because no one wants to adopt a small black dog that cowers in the back of the kennel. Chili spend a couple of weeks in a California foster, where it was discovered that she loves other dogs. She takes time to warm up to people, but is sweet wants to make friends.

Meet Chili, a sweet little soul with a big heart waiting to blossom. She’s a gentle girl who takes her time feeling safe, so she’ll thrive best with a patient, understanding home. While she’s still building confidence around people, she’s beginning to trust by allowing gentle pets and touches when she’s ready. With love and consistency, Chili has the potential to become a deeply affectionate and loyal companion.

She’s already potty trained, enjoys cozy crate time, and is slowly revealing her clever, playful, and spunky side. Chili gets along wonderfully with dogs of similar size, though she feels more comfortable around smaller or same-sized friends than with larger dogs. Due to this, Chili does require a home with another dog. She’s not quite ready to be picked up yet, but every day she’s showing more curiosity and courage. The right family will have the joy of watching her transform into the loving, confident dog she’s meant to be.

The short fence in the yard? She sees it as a suggestion. Clover doesn’t escape so much as audit your security.

26. Cooper

Adult (3 years 5 months) · Male · Chihuahua (short coat) · 33 mi from Tacoma

Animal Information:

Cooper is a 3-year-old, 7-pound Chihuahua who came to the Stanislaus shelter as part of an animal welfare case, where she and 18 other dogs were lovingly cared for by shelter staff while the District Attorney's office worked through the legal process. Once the dogs were finally released and available for rescue, we knew we had to help.

Cooper, along with Freckles, Littles, and Tasha, all came from the same home. Although he's a little shy at first, he has been incredibly sweet with the shelter staff and just needs a little time to feel safe and let his personality shine.

Read more about Cooper

We can't wait to welcome him to the Pacific Northwest and show her what the good life is all about

Foster Profile:

Cooper, aka Fruit Bat, is a sweet, shy pup who has blossomed since arriving in Seattle. He lives happily with one human, another dog, and two cats and is gentle and submissive with everyone. Once he settles in, he is a total lovebug who wants to follow you around, cuddle, and give lots of kisses. His favorite thing in the world is affection, and he will happily bump his head into you for pets or roll around on you like a cat.

Cooper has also discovered that food and toys are pretty great. He gets excited for mealtimes and playtime, is learning to play fetch, and loves tossing his toys around after dinner. He knows "boop," "sit," and "lie down," and gets the funniest Chihuahua zoomies before bed. He is a very quiet dog, easy to handle, and happily allows daily nail trims and teeth brushing.

He is fully potty trained in his foster home and has been fantastic in his crate from day one. He sleeps in his crate overnight and when left alone and has done well for up to five hours.

The outside world is still a little scary for Cooper, but he has made huge strides. He has gone from being afraid to leave the front door to regularly joining longer walks around Seattle, riding the bus and light rail, and exploring trails on weekends. He has even enjoyed three to four hour trail adventures and has the potential to be a wonderful hiking buddy. He walks well with both small and large dogs and generally wants to stay close to his pack. When something scares him, he may freeze for a moment or create some distance, but he is easy to redirect and continues to gain confidence with each new experience.

Cooper would thrive with a patient, supportive person who can help him navigate new and scary things at his own pace. He is looking for a home with at least one other canine companion.

Cooper is perfectly happy being a cozy homebody, but he also loves getting out to explore. Most of all, he is a gentle, affectionate little guy who has come so far and is ready to keep discovering how wonderful life can be.

27. Chippy

Adult (5 years 3 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat) · 30 mi from Tacoma

Meet Chippy!

Chippy is a really sweet, cuddly dog once he has some time to trust you - which is understandable since he was abandoned on the side of a road in a crate. He loves snuggling on the couch in the evenings and does well on a leash around his foster's yard.

He definitely needs his space in the beginning and, as he's lived in his foster home, has started to really relax and trust as time goes on. He'll need someone patient enough to let him adjust on his terms, which may take a few weeks. He isn't reactive around other dogs, but isn't particularly interested in them, either.

Read more about Chippy

Chippy is potty trained (and let's me know when he needs to go out!) and loves laying in the sun on the deck and sleeping all day while his foster mom works. He doesn't like being crated, but he's been great when he is just left loose in the house - no issues when his foster leaves him alone. He sleeps all night at the foot of her bed. He's just a really chill, easy-going dog once he trusts you and will do well in a home where things are more quiet.

Due to Chippy's timid nature, he is not suitable for a home with children. A home with a yard, where he can putter to his hearts content, will be best for him.

Chippy is vaccinated, neutered and chipped. His adoption fee is $395

28. Alexander

Adult (4 years 4 months) · Male · Maltese / Mixed (medium coat) · 30 mi from Tacoma

Meet Alexander!

Alexander is around 4 years old and came to us when his owner could no longer care for him.

Alexander is a friendly, affectionate boy with a winning personality. He loves people and has a wonderful way of making everyone around him feel adored. He gets along well with other dogs and happily greets both dogs and people on his walks. He has not yet been tested with cats. Alexander does not do well with children and is not suitable for a home with kids under 12.

Read more about Alexander

Alexander has a lovely balance of energy and companionship. He enjoys walks and playing in the yard, but he is equally happy curled up at his foster mom’s feet while she works from home. His favorite pastime may be gazing lovingly at her throughout the day. He has bonded beautifully with everyone in his foster home and loves being included in family life—including car rides, parks, youth sporting events, group activities/gatherings, and outdoor restaurants.

He is also making great progress learning to be comfortable on his own. Alexander will go willingly into his crate with a treat and has successfully stayed home for 3+ hours. He may bark intermittently while his family is away, but he can settle himself and rest, and he comes out of his crate calm when they return.

Alexander can be vocal at times, so he would not be a good fit for apartment living or a home where barking could be an issue. That said, his barking has improved tremendously as he has settled into foster care, and he is increasingly responsive to gentle correction. With consistency and time, we expect that progress to continue.

Alexander was still working on potty training when he arrived in foster care, but he is coming along beautifully with a consistent routine. Regular trips outside—either into the yard or for a quick walk—have made a big difference, and his foster family is learning his cues and helping him succeed.

More than anything, Alexander is a loving, social dog who wants to be part of his people’s lives. He has made wonderful progress in foster care and will thrive with a home that can give him affection, consistency, exercise, and a little patience as he continues to settle into his new life.

Alexander is vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. He is scheduled for a full dental cleaning in September. His adoption fee is $450.

29. Evie

Adult (1 year 3 months) · Female · Maltese / Havanese / Mixed (long coat) · 13 mi from Tacoma

Please go to our website for all specific information about this dog. Our info doesn't transfer over to the adoption sites.

Read more about Evie

Evie is a darling young girl. She came to us via a local puppy miller, very pregnant. Her mama duties are done, she's vetted, we've gotten to know her outside of being a mama and it's her time to be someone's baby. She is sweet, fairly active and good with dogs. She loves affection and attention but doesn't quite understand this lap dog stuff and won't stay there long. She looks like a perfect mix of toy poodle and maltese but she's the wrong color. There was a havanese with the same coloring so she may have some of that too. Her coat is maltese fine but curlier and her tail curls like a cinnamon roll, tight and sits straight up on her back.
She is still learning to be a house pet. She is not house broken nor crate trained. If left too long without trips outside, she will soil in the home or her crate. She doesn't necessarily use the provided puppy pads either. Her new family must be able to continue to help her with these things. She is not leash trained either so that will need to be worked on. And this also means, a securely fenced yard is required, no exceptions. No younger children in the home either.
We have her on a good grain free, chicken free food (as all maltese should be on due to them being prone to allergies with both) and she's doing great. She's been groomed twice now, once the day we got her and recently before her spay. She was a matted, stinky, long nails and flea infested girl when we got her. We never want her in that condition again. Please provide your groomers name and phone number on our adoption application if you would like to apply for her.

Prior to adoption, our dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and parasite treated/prevented.

30. Lemon

Adult (4 years 5 months) · Female · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 33 mi from Tacoma

Animal Information: Lemon is a sweet 4-year-old, 12.5-pound Chihuahua mix who arrived at the shelter as a stray. The shelter environment was understandably overwhelming for her at first, and she spent much of her time curled up and trembling from all the noise and activity.

Once staff gave her a chance to get out and decompress, Lemon’s gentle personality began to shine through. Though shy and submissive at first, she’s eager to make friends and warms up with kindness and patience. Lemon is friendly with people, does well with other dogs, and is ready for a fresh start.

Read more about Lemon

We’re excited to welcome Lemon to the PNW and help this little girl blossom.

Foster Profile: Lemon is a playful and energetic little cutie looking for a new home. She is sweet, shy, and gentle. Lemon loves her crate and is doing great with potty training. She is still learning how to be a dog and needs a home with another resident dog to show her the ropes.

Lemon will retreat to her crate around new people and needs an adopter who will help her build confidence and be patient without coddling her. Lemon loves to go for walks, play with stuffies, and is happy to snuggle. Lemon will benefit from a confident handler to show her the world.

Adoption Info: Adoption fee is $575 which includes spay/neuter, core vaccinations Rabies and DPPV per AVMA standards, any indicated preventative care, heartworm test, microc hip with lifetime registration, and recent health check with a veterinarian. Small dogs suit apartments and smaller homes, are easy to take along, and many live well into their teens.

They still need daily walks, play and training. Small dogs can be fragile, so ask the rescue how they are with young children, who can easily drop or step on them.
