1. Mack

Puppy (12 days) · Male · Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 7 mi from Signal Hill

Mack and his brother were dumped at a park, at 8 weeks old, left to fend for themselves. Luckily someone came and scooped them up to keep them safe! They made their way to our shelter and have been sweet, playful and just oh so adorable!

They are around 11 weeks old now, and ready to find loving homes that will treat them like family. We do not know what their breed mix is made up of, but we have them as Staffordshire Terrier mixes. Based on their current size, we are expecting them to be medium to large sized dogs when grown up, but cannot guarantee a specific weight range.

Read more about Mack

Mack is energetic and sporty. He LOVES toys and he loves to use his mouth, as they are in the puppy teething stage. We think he will grow up to be a great hiking partner, and would do well in an active household.

Are you ready for the puppy energy and training! Mack is ready to meet you!

The puppies will be shown by APPOINTMENT ONLY to ensure their safety as they are not fully vaccinated yet. To make an appointment, please fill out our FULL ADOPTION APPLICATION below and wait for a phone call. Please be patient, as we usually have a high number of interested adopters when we have puppies.

2. Skye

Young (9 months) · Female · Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 7 mi from Signal Hill

Skye is one of the scruffiest girls you’ll meet – we swear there is a dog under all that hair! She is some sort of Terrier mix, around 10 months old. We took her in from a rescue that we work with from time to time, who needed help placing some pups. Skye is a very friendly, active and playful girl that is sure to liven up your home!

She does well walking on leash, loves other dogs, and is just super fun! Now, getting her to hold still long enough for photos can be tricky, we promise she is much cuter in person.

This scruff-ball has so much love to give!

3. Zion

Adult (5 years 2 months) · Male · German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) · 7 mi from Signal Hill

Zion is an absolute stunner of a dog, he is a 5 year old German Shepherd who turns heads everywhere he goes. He is a great dog that just needs a strong handler, familiar with the GSD breed. After about 3 years living in New Mexico, after being adopted from us in 2023, Zion had to return to the shelter through no fault of his own. Here at the shelter, he has made a lot of friends with our volunteers. They love to play fetch with him up in the yard! Zion is also a big lover of squeaky toys, the bigger the better!! He is so sweet with the people within his circle of friends here. Always rolling over for belly rubs, or leaning into them for booty scratches. This big guy also LOVES car rides!

Read more about Zion

A little bit about Zion from his previous owner:

He is a stunning German Shepard and a big boy weighing in around 100lbs and very strong.

At home with people he trusts he is very chill, playful, friendly, and always happy for attention.

His greatest joy in life is fetch and loves to carry his ball around with him.

Zion has been formally trained with basic commands and behavior and responds to them excellently. He is always eager for learning, activity and engagement.

He is kennel and muzzle trained. He can be slow to trust but once he does there is not a more loyal dog.

Zion can be insecure, so he needs an owner he can look to for reassurance! When he trusts you, he will follow your lead, and follow you anywhere!

Zion does need to be the only pet, in an adult only home.

8. Betsy

Senior · Female · Boston Terrier (short coat) · 13 mi from Signal Hill

Sweet Betsy came into rescue back in December after landing at West LA Animal Services with several medical concerns. We immediately got this precious girl to the vet so her routine care could be completed and all of her medical needs could be addressed.

Betsy is now spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and both her heartworm and fecal tests were negative. Sadly, she was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease, but the good news is that it is manageable with daily medication. Her medication costs approximately $80–$100 per month and will be needed for the rest of her life.

Read more about Betsy

Despite her diagnosis, Betsy is an absolute joy! She lives with multiple dogs and gets along well with everyone — except at mealtime. Betsy is very food motivated, so she does need to be fed separately because she will happily try to sample everyone else’s dinner too!

Other than that little quirk, Betsy truly is the BEST. She uses the doggie door like a pro, rides wonderfully in the car, and absolutely loves to cuddle. Estimated to be around 12 years old and weighing 19 pounds, she is the perfect mix of couch companion and walking buddy. Whether you’re settling in for a TV marathon or taking a leisurely stroll around the block, Betsy will be right by your side.

This sweet Senior Señorita is simply looking for someone to open their heart and home so she can enjoy her golden years surrounded by love. Could that be you?

Meet Sombra! ❤️

A Lovely Little Dachshund Terrier Mix Ready for Her Next Chapter!

Breed: Dachshund Terrier Mix
Gender: Female DOB: 10/30/2019
Age: 7 Years
Weight: 16 lbs
Good With: Dogs ✔️ | Kids ✔️ | Cats: Unknown
Medical: Spay and Vaccination Status Not Confirmed
Personality: Individual Temperament Still Being Evaluated

❤️ Personality & Breed Information

Meet Sombra, a beautiful 7-year-old Dachshund Terrier mix weighing just 16 pounds! This lovely little lady is searching for a forever family who will give her the comfort, companionship, and stability she deserves.

Read more about Sombra

At seven years old, Sombra has moved beyond the demanding puppy stages, making her a wonderful candidate for someone interested in adopting an adult dog. Her individual personality is still being evaluated, but she has the opportunity to build a loving bond with a family who will give her time to settle in.

About the Dachshund Terrier Mix

Dachshunds and Terriers are known for their intelligence, determination, loyalty, and curious personalities. Originally bred as working dogs, both breeds can have strong instincts to explore, investigate interesting scents, and engage with their surroundings.

As a Dachshund Terrier mix, Sombra may display some of these characteristics:

Loyal and Affectionate: Many develop strong attachments to their families.

Intelligent and Curious: They often enjoy exploring, scent games, and interactive activities.

Independent: Their determined personalities benefit from patient, consistent guidance.

Playful: Even mature adults may enjoy toys, games, and daily adventures.

Alert: They can be observant and attentive to their surroundings.

Because Sombra is a mixed breed, her individual temperament and energy level may vary from these general characteristics.

At 16 pounds, Sombra is a manageable size for many households. Her ideal home will provide appropriate exercise, companionship, and a comfortable environment where she can feel secure.

Training, Adjustment & What to Expect

Although Sombra is seven years old, adopters should not assume she is fully house-trained or familiar with household routines. Rescue dogs may arrive with basic training at best.

Her future family should be prepared to reinforce house training, leash manners, basic commands, and appropriate household behavior using positive reinforcement.

Dachshund Terrier mixes often benefit from daily walks, scent-based activities, and mental enrichment. Exercise should be adjusted to Sombra's individual energy level and physical condition.

Sombra is considered suitable for homes with dogs and children, with proper introductions and supervision. Her compatibility with cats is unknown.

Understanding the 3-3-3 Rule

Every rescue dog needs time to adjust:

3 Days: Decompress and begin feeling safe.

3 Weeks: Learn household routines and build confidence.

3 Months: Develop trust and become more comfortable in the family.

These are guidelines, not deadlines. Patience, consistency, and a predictable routine will help Sombra settle into her new home.

Owner Responsibilities & Veterinary Care

Sombra's current spay and vaccination status have not been confirmed. Her adopter should review her medical records and arrange any necessary follow-up care.

Dachshund Terrier Health Considerations

Because of her breed mix and age, Sombra's future family should be aware of several potential health considerations:

Back and Spinal Health: Dachshunds are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). If Sombra has inherited a longer back, limiting repetitive jumping and maintaining a healthy weight may help protect her spine.

Joint Health: Smaller dogs may develop kneecap instability or age-related joint discomfort.

Dental Care: Regular tooth brushing and veterinary dental examinations are important.

Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy body condition supports mobility and overall health.

Age-Appropriate Care: As Sombra gets older, regular wellness examinations can help

At three months old, Estella is experiencing the exciting world of puppyhood. Like most puppies her age, she is expected to be curious, playful, and eager to explore her surroundings. Her individual personality is still developing, giving her future family the wonderful opportunity to watch her grow and discover what makes her special.

Currently weighing only 6.6 pounds, Estella is a petite puppy with more growing to do. Her adult size will depend on her genetics and development.

About the Terrier Breed

Terriers are known for their intelligence, lively personalities, curiosity, and determination. Originally developed for various working purposes, many Terriers are energetic little dogs who enjoy exploring, playing, and spending time with their families.

As a Terrier mix, Estella may inherit characteristics such as:

She is considered suitable for homes with other dogs and children, provided introductions are handled carefully and interactions are supervised. Her compatibility with cats has not yet been established.

Because Estella is currently very small, young children should be taught to handle her gently, and playtime with larger dogs should always be supervised.

Estella doesn't need a perfect family. She needs a patient, committed family who will love her through every stage of life.

Training, Adjustment & What to Expect

At just three months old, Estella is beginning to learn the skills she will need throughout her life.

Puppies are not born knowing household rules, and rescue puppies may arrive with little or no formal training. Her future family should be prepared to teach her through positive reinforcement, patience, and consistency.

Essential Puppy Training

House Training: Establish a regular bathroom schedule, offer frequent potty breaks, and reward successful habits.

Crate Training: Introduce a comfortable, secure resting space using positive experiences.

Basic Commands: Begin teaching sit, come, stay, and leave it through short, engaging training sessions.

Although Jack's individual temperament and favorite activities have not yet been fully documented, his breed background offers helpful insight into the type of enrichment, training, and lifestyle that may suit him.

About the Terrier-Shepherd Mix

Terriers and Shepherds are two distinctive groups of dogs, both known for their intelligence, enthusiasm, and strong working backgrounds.

As a Terrier-Shepherd mix, Jack may inherit characteristics from either side of his heritage.

Typical Terrier Characteristics:

Curious and alert: Terriers often enjoy exploring their surroundings and investigating interesting sights and smells.

Intelligent and determined: Many are quick learners who appreciate engaging activities.

Energetic and playful: Terriers frequently enjoy interactive games and daily exercise.

Independent thinkers: They can benefit from consistent, positive training and clear household expectations.

Typical Shepherd Characteristics:

Intelligent and trainable: Shepherd breeds often respond well to structured learning and positive reinforcement.

Loyal and people-oriented: Many develop strong attachments to their families.

Active and athletic: Shepherds generally benefit from regular exercise and mental stimulation.

Observant and attentive: Their working backgrounds can make them especially aware of their environments.

Because Jack is a mixed breed, his individual personality may differ from these general breed tendencies.

His future family should be prepared to learn about his unique preferences, activity level, and behavior as he settles into his new home.

At approximately 32 pounds, Jack is a medium-sized dog who may fit comfortably into a variety of living arrangements, provided his exercise, enrichment, and companionship needs are met.

Jack deserves a family who will get to know him as an individual, appreciate his unique personality, and give him the opportunity to enjoy a happy, secure life.

Training, Adjustment & What to Expect

At four years old, Jack is an adult dog who will benefit from a consistent routine, positive reinforcement training, and patient guidance.

Meet Larry, a handsome 6-month-old Australian Kelpie mix weighing approximately 20 pounds! This young boy has his whole life ahead of him and is searching for a loving family who will help him grow into a happy, confident, and well-adjusted companion.

One of Larry's wonderful qualities is that he lives comfortably around cats, making him a promising candidate for a family with feline companions. He is also considered suitable for homes with dogs and children, with appropriate introductions and supervision.

How to adopt from Forte Animal Rescue

    1. Volunteers at Forte Animal Rescue will work with you to identify your interests and needs in regards to a companion animal that would be suitable for your home. Our Adoption Questionnaire (PDF) for Dogs or Cats covers most of the issues which we have found relevant to helping you find your new companion and smooth the transition for both of you. 2. After reading your questionnaire, one of our volunteers may make suggestions as to which animals may be best suited to you and your lifestyle and make an arrangement for you to meet them at our Weekend Adoptions or in their foster homes to get to know each other. 3. If you fall in love on the spot, please make sure you have read the "Before You Adopt" section because this is a big, and important decision, not just for the human involved, but also for the companion animal. We can then proceed with the next stop of the adoption process which is commonly called the "Home Safety-Check" 4. An Adoption Fee is required along with a signed adoption agreement, which ensures that if, for any reason, you are unable to keep the animal, he/she is to be returned to Forte Animal Rescue only. 5. Finally, we personally deliver your new family member to your home.

Adopting a dog in Signal Hill

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
