2. Memo
Senior · Male · Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 81 mi from Port St. Lucie

10 year old 5.5 pound chihuahua
He has no teeth.
Memo came to us from Puerto Rico
He’s a snuggly boy who likes to be held like a baby
His lack of teeth doesn’t get in the way of his eating, he just needs soft food or soaked kibble.
He is good with all people.
He is good with other dogs, he does have some stereotypical Chihuahua traits, growls when other dogs come near his favorite bed for example, but he has no teeth and it’s just a little warning, nothing of concern.
He would be fine with other dogs or as an only dog.
He likes soft beds, head scratches, exploring outside and laying in the sun.
3. Jack
Senior · Male · Plott Hound / Mixed · 97 mi from Port St. Lucie

Meet Jack, a sweet 11-year-young gentleman with the biggest heart.
Jack is truly an oldie but a goodie, but don’t let his age fool you—he’s still got plenty of pep in his step! He enjoys the simple things in life, whether that’s soaking up the sunshine during a cozy nap or heading out on a new adventure.
Jack is quiet, easygoing, and non-reactive. He loves people watching from the porch and taking in everything happening around him. And when his playful side comes out, it’s absolutely adorable! You’ll find him rolling around in the grass, running at the start of his walks, or even chasing waves at the beach.
Jack is so easy to be around, and all he really wants is someone to share his golden years with. If you’re looking for a loving, laid-back companion with just the right amount of playful spirit, Jack might be your perfect match.
Come on! Submit an application and come meet this senior sweetie today!

4. Melanie Rose
Senior (8 years 2 months) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 74 mi from Port St. Lucie

Melanie Rose was found abandoned at a church in Pembroke Pines, FL.
I am 8 years old, which means I have a lot of love stored up and I am very ready to give all of it to you. I love walks - genuinely, enthusiastically, every single time. I love stuffed animals and I take very good care of them. I love cuddles more than almost anything in the world and I am exceptionally good at them. I am told I am the biggest cuddle bug anyone here has ever met and I accept that title with full sincerity.

I am potty trained and great in the car and fine on my own when I need to be. I have done a lot of hard things and I have handled all of them with more grace than anyone had a right to expect.
All I need now is you. A patient home. A soft couch. Someone who understands that 8 years old is not too old - it is just the right age to finally get everything I deserve.
- No cats
5. Elvis
Senior · Male · Dachshund (short coat) · 81 mi from Port St. Lucie

11 year old male
13 pounds
Good with other dogs
Has a heart murmur that requires medication
He is doing well and did well under anesthesia for his dental.
He wouldn’t be a good fit for a home with small children.
6. Wally
Senior · Male · Dachshund / Mixed (short coat) · 81 mi from Port St. Lucie

10 year old 20 pound dachshund mix
Sweet and happy boy
Good with all people and other dogs
Loves exploring the backyard and snuggling in soft beds. His hearing may not be the best. The good thing about that is that it makes him a world class sleeper.
7. Mara & Emily
Senior · Female · Dachshund (short coat) · 92 mi from Port St. Lucie

Meet Mara (red) & Emily (black & tan); aka Ginger & MaryAnn, lol. These bonded sisters are 12 years old & the sweetest pair ever! They are on the smaller size, weighing in at about 11 pounds each, are up-to-date on their shots & are spayed.
Both are potty trained as long as taken out regularly. They are crate trained & sleep the night thru together. They get along with other small dogs, not sure about cats or large dogs. Both are a little shy at first, but warm up to new people very quickly. Mara & Emily do well on a leash and enjoy lizard hunting in the backyard or sitting in the sun like most doxies.
Mara is a bit more special needs and has IVDD, so she gets a monthly Librella injection at the vet which keeps her mobile.
Read more about Mara & Emily
She gets around on her own & does not need any help pottying. Mara doesn’t do stairs but has learned to use a dog ramp to get to her favorite spot on the couch.
They both had horrible dental disease, so DARE recently had dentals done; Emily lost all her teeth & Mara still has about 4 remaining. Therefore, they are on soft foods.
They love snuggling together when they are not snuggling on the coach with their person. These two gals are very low key & easy going girls who would do best in a quiet home.
Mara & Emily MUST stay together & are being fostered in Orlando but travel very well in a car. If you think these two would make a good addition to your family, please fill out an adoption application & put their names on it. ♥

8. Darwin
Senior · Male · Dachshund (short coat) · 81 mi from Port St. Lucie

12 year old male, 17 pounds
Darwin is naked. Dogs of this silver color are beautiful and have lovely coats when they are young and then lose their fur as they age.
Cuddly and sweet boy
Loves everyone
Good with other dogs
Darwin came to us paralyzed, we had him go to a neurologist and have surgery, but it did not restore his ability to walk. He has drag bags and a cart that will go with him. He gets around in the house just fine using his front legs.
For longer walks, he goes in his cart and would love a stroller.
He loves to be near his people.
He needs assistance to go potty, it is really easy and his foster can show his new family how.

He’s a wonderful dog and we know there is a family out there for him.
Adopting a senior dog in Port St. Lucie
Older dogs are usually calm, affectionate and happy with shorter walks, which makes them a good match for older adults and first-time dog owners.
Ask the rescue about the dog's health and vet history. Many rescues charge less to adopt a senior dog.
Many small dogs live to 15 or older, so a senior dog can still be part of your family for years.
