• OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I've done very well with the two dogs in my first foster home, both of whom were male and around 15–20 pounds. I was very respectful when meeting them, even rolling over to show my belly to the more nervous one. Once they became comfortable with me, I got the zoomies and started inviting them to play! I shared toys nicely, enjoyed a fun game of tug-o-war with one of them, and loved having playmates. If the more nervous dog felt I was getting a little too energetic, he would give me a correction, and I listened, backed off, and gave him space. Of course, I'd kindly try again a little later—lol! I've been a wonderful housemate and have shown that I can be playful while still respecting another dog's boundaries. So, if you have a nice dog at home already, let's meet! / I've had a lovely introduction to the cat in my first foster home! She usually NEVER approaches dogs she doesn't know, but she took a liking to me almost immediately. When I first noticed her, I slowly approached and sniffed her, giving her a chance to sniff me, too. I didn't try to play with her but was content to calmly follow her around. I was very gentle and respectful of my new feline friend! Of course, all cats are different, so I'm not sure how I would do with another kitty. / I haven't met kids yet at Mostly Mutts, so let's meet and best no toddlers that I may bump over.

• PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I was a shy guy at the shelter, but once I went into my foster home, my fun-loving, happy personality just came out to surprise my foster family! I fit right into their fun, music-loving household in no time. I loved being included in all the activity with the people and other pets and was such a good guest that they said I was the best right from the start! I guess you could say I'm a pretty easygoing houseguest with a happy heart and a love for being part of the fun. I can't wait to settle into a home of my own where I can share in all the good times with you! / Energy level: 4-6.

• SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I know the 'sit', 'down', 'come' and 'leave it' commands and I accept friendly strangers without jumping. I look forward to learning lots more. Stuffed toys are fun, and a good game of tug-o-war is always a hit with me! I'm sure we'll discover lots of other things we will enjoy doing together once I'm settled in my new home. / Other than being at the shelter, I can't think of any dislikes, though like all dogs, I'm sure I wouldn't like it if I didn't get enough love, attention, exercise, and training.

At around 40 pounds, Nova is a nice, svelte size … and if you're looking for a lap dog, she's more than happy to audition for the job! While she can sometimes be a bit jumpy in her enthusiastic greetings with people, she already knows her Sit command and is learning to greet her human friends more politely. Plus Nova is eager to please, and would love to keep learning with her forever family. One thing to note is that this agile girl can climb a chain link fence … she only tries it when left alone, all so that she can get to her favorite human or doggie friends. This super affectionate, fun-loving girl has so much potential and so much love to give. She's ready to trade shelter life for family adventures, cozy snuggles, and a place to finally call home. Come meet this beautiful brindle girl soon and let Nova’s loving eyes work their magic on you!

Now I hear that I'm ready to find a wonderful family of my very own, where I can love and be loved furever! I hope to meet them very soon and charm them with my fun and lively spirit!

Read more about Vanessa

• OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I met other dogs at Mostly Mutts and initially liked them, but now I'm not sure as I have growled at them, so I may be best as your only dog. / No cats please. / I haven't met kids yet at Mostly Mutts, so let's meet and best no toddlers that I may bump over.

• PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I'm a playful, friendly, and sweet girl with an active personality and a whole lot of fun to share! I'm a busy gal who likes to keep things interesting, so if you're looking for a couch potato, that's not me! I'd love a family who enjoys spending time together and can give me plenty of fun activities to keep my mind and body happy. I was a very good girl for my bath, even lifting each paw for rinsing like a little lady! And just look at my beautiful coat! I do enjoy expressing myself with a bit of talking, so apartment or condo living may not be the best fit for me. One important thing to know is that I'm a door dasher, so please be extra careful when entering and exiting to keep me safe. I'm a lively, loving girl ready to bring plenty of fun and companionship to my furever family! / Energy level: 5-7, sometimes a bit higher.

• SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I'm in the Mostly Mutts University training program and have already mastered the 'sit', 'down', 'come' and 'place' commands. I also have good leash walking manners. Let's continue my training together with the free lifetime training classes that Mostly Mutts offers for all their adopted dogs! / My crate manners are good at Mostly Mutts and were good in a temporary home I visited for about a week. / My potty manners have been good on the shelter schedule and were good in the temporary home I visited for about a week.

• LIKES/DISLIKES: I love toys, running around, and having fun with my people! If you have a fenced yard, I think we could have a great time running and playing together. I'm also a fan of good butt scratches (oh, that's the spot!) and, even though I'm an active girl, I enjoy being carried and held for a little cuddle time, too. I'm sure we'll discover lots more things we like doing together in our new home! / I can't think of any dislikes other than not getting enough activity and like all dogs, I'm sure I wouldn't like it if I didn't get enough love, attention, exercise, and training.

• MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I have moderate tartar on my teeth, so my adoptive family should consult with their vet and consider a dental cleaning in the future.

I'm a wonderful fun-loving girl looking for a family that will include me in on the family fun and love me furever! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I'm located in Kennesaw, Ga.

22. Pirate

5 Months 28 Days · Male · Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed

Ahoy Mateys! I’m Pirate, and I’m searching for my FOREVER crew!

I’m an adorably scruffy mixed fellow who loves to play with other dogs! I’m around 6 months old now and roughly 35 lbs of pure love, fun, and puppy kisses!

Don’t worry, my eye patch isn’t real!

I am crate trained and working hard on my potty training, doing great with it while on my foster family’s routine. I thrive on a routine! I’m still just a young pup learning the ropes, but I’m trying my very best to be the goodest boy!

Now, here’s the part of my story that makes my little pirate heart sad…

Read more about Pirate

I was returned for being “awful,” as they put it. I call it pirate mutiny because what a conspira-sea!!

But my foster mom says she has absolutely no idea why anyone would say I’m awful, because I’m sweet, loving, attentive, smart, and playful. Thank goodness for my rescuers who see me for the sweet, joyful boy I am!

I may not have been the right treasure for someone else, but I just KNOW there’s a family out there who will see that I’m worth more than all the gold in a pirate’s treasure chest!

I am a medium-high energy young man, and I would love my very own home with another pup sibling or more to sail the open seas through this thing called life together! I want a family who will play with me, teach me, love me, and understand that I’m still a puppy figuring out this big world.

I don’t need a perfect ship or a chest full of gold. I just need someone who will love me, be patient with me, and promise that this time, my forever really means FOREVER.

Could YOU be my captain? Could I be the missing treasure your family has been searching for?

If you want to make me a part of your forever, I promise to bring a whole lot of love, laughter, adventure, and puppy kisses aboard your ship!

Please share my story, mateys! My forever family might just be one share away!

Fair winds from the high seas,

Love, Pirate

Adopting a dog in Floyd County

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
