1. Aiden

Adult · Male · White German Shepherd / Mixed (long coat) · 24 mi from Waukegan

BIO
Hello! My name is Aiden. I am currently being treated for heartworm. My heartworm treatment will be completed, and I can go home with my family the middle of December 2026. I am housetrained. I am not crate trained. I have been fine when left unsupervised. When meeting strangers I go right up to them without barking and enjoy getting pet. I have been friendly to everyone I meet.I have met other dogs; however, I prefer female dogs about the same size as me. I really love to play with the female dog here at my foster home. I have not met any cats, so I do not know how I feel about them. I don’t really care about toys. I like going for car rides. I walk well on a leash with no reactivity. I know a few commands, but maybe you could teach me more. I love being brushed. Look how handsome I am.I would like to find a home with someone active. Someone who likes hiking and going on adventures. We could go to some obedience classes where I could learn lots of things. I can be an only dog. It would be nice to find a friend and have some play dates to help keep up my social skills since I do enjoy running around and playing. Do you know anyone with a female dog who would like to play with me?

Meet Maeve! This adorable 6-month-old Aussiedoodle mix is a happy, friendly, and playful girl with a scruffy little look that makes her oh-so-cute! Maeve is full of puppy energy, curiosity, and love. She enjoys playing with toys, romping around with other dogs, going for walks (she walks beautifully on a leash!), and tagging along for car rides. Most of all, she loves being with her people and will happily follow you around all day.Maeve is good with children and other dogs. She is a smart girl who listens well and adapts quickly to new routines. She is spayed and currently working on her potty and crate training.

Read more about Maeve

She's already made wonderful progress with her potty training in just a week!Maeve would thrive with an active person or family who can provide plenty of exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation. She would especially love a playful canine companion with a similar energy level, as she may be a bit overwhelming for smaller or senior dogs. Maeve also prefers having company and doesn't enjoy being left alone, so a home where someone is around often would be ideal.Maeve was surrendered when her previous elderly owner experienced health issues. She's ready for a fresh start with a family who can keep up with her playful spirit, give her lots of love, and include her in all of life's adventures. 3. Dolly

Young · Female · White German Shepherd (medium coat) · 24 mi from Waukegan

BIO
Hello! My name is Dolly. I will be ready for adoption December 2026, when my heartworm treatment is complete. I am house trained and crate trained. Since I am still so young it is best to keep me on a schedule and crate me when you cannot supervise me. When visitors come to the house, I am calm and well behaved. I do not bark at them. I am slow to warm up to strangers, but I am sweet and affectionate with my family. I have met dogs of different sizes and ages. I have done very well with them. I like to play and run around with other dogs that are my size. I saw a cat and I did not like it. I like playing with stuffed dog toys and chew toys. I like bringing them into my crate along with anything else I find. I know how to play fetch and tug. I walk well on a leash. I am not reactive. I am learning commands. I behave well at the vets and the groomer said I was a good girl. I like staying clean anyway.I would thrive in a household with a lot of love and attention; a schedule suits me best. A resident canine companion about my size to play and run around with. An appropriate fence height is an absolute must; I am very athletic. I would like lots of walks, playtime outside and fun activities. Maybe some training classes, nose work or agility. If you’re looking for a very happy, affectionate girl, here I am.

6. Ingrid

Adult (2 years 2 months) · Female · Rottweiler (medium coat) · 15 mi from Waukegan

Introducing the beautiful Ingrid. This gorgeous girl may be big in size, but she is really just a big baby with an even bigger heart. Ingrid is a total sweetheart who absolutely adores people and loves spending quality time with her favorite humans. She is incredibly loving and affectionate, and if you think your lap is reserved for a smaller pup, think again. She may just try to climb right in and cuddle up, because when it comes to showing love, she believes there is no such thing as being too big for a lap. She is a fun-loving girl with a playful spirit. She enjoys going for walks and carries herself with such grace. But don't let her elegant stroll fool you—this girl has a silly, dramatic side, too. She may occasionally perform her hilarious fake fall-to-the-ground routine when she wants your attention, and her adorable antics are sure to keep you smiling and laughing.

Read more about Ingrid

Ingrid has a cherry eye that we plan to have evaluated by a veterinarian to determine whether surgery is necessary at this time. For now, she seems comfortable and does not appear to be too bothered by it. We will make sure her needs are addressed so she can continue to enjoy life as the happy, playful girl she is!

Ingrid is good with children and most other dogs, but she is not a fan of cats. She is searching for a loving family who will give her all the love, attention, and quality time her big heart desires. In return, you will have a loyal, devoted companion who will fill your days with affection, laughter, and plenty of big-girl cuddles. Could Ingrid be the missing piece to your family? Bring this lovable big baby home, and get ready for a whole lot of love wrapped up in one very special girl.

12. Sweetie Pie

Senior · Female · Terrier / Mixed · 11 mi from Waukegan

Meet Sweetie Pie! Sweetie Pie is a sweet, laid-back girl who loves being with her people but is also perfectly happy relaxing on her blanket nearby. She’s potty trained, travels well in her crate, and does great with dogs and kids. She’s also good with cats as long as they don’t run—because a running cat can quickly turn into a fun game of chase! Sweetie Pie loves going for walks and is always ready to sniff and explore. She enjoys meeting other dogs and has plenty of terrier instinct when it comes to squirrels, chipmunks, and other critters, so she’s still working on her leash manners and “leave it.”When she’s not out exploring, Sweetie Pie enjoys belly rubs, lounging on the couch, and playing with her favorite tennis ball and rope toy.

She doesn’t bark much and can be wonderfully calm and content. She does get a little anxious when left alone in her crate and may whine or rearrange things while you’re gone. She is very affectionate
Noemi is incredibly smart and trainable, learns very quickly

17. Turnip

Young · Male · Boston Terrier / Mixed · 11 mi from Waukegan

Turnip’s story is one of the most incredible transformations we’ve seen.Turnip came into rescue alongside Rhubarb after suffering from one of the worst cases of skin issues and neglect we had seen in a very long time. He was uncomfortable, neglected, and desperately needed help. Thanks to the incredible generosity and support of our rescue community, Turnip received the medical care, love, and attention he needed—and the transformation has been AMAZING. Now that Turnip is feeling so much better, he’s ready for the next chapter of his life: finding the family who will show him what being loved forever really means.Turnip is an affectionate, cuddly, medium-to-high-energy boy who LOVES his people.

Read more about Turnip

He is definitely a Velcro dog and wants to be wherever his humans are. If you move to another room, there’s a good chance Turnip will be right behind you—or letting you know that he would very much like to come along! He loves following his people around, playing with toys, and having fun with his favorite canine friends.Turnip is still working on his potty training, puppy manners, and leash skills, but he is making progress. He is also learning that boundaries are a good thing, and his future family will need to be willing to continue that work with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement.Turnip is good with children, but he is dog selective. New dogs need to be introduced slowly and carefully, with supervision. Turnip tends to be a dominant personality and can bully more submissive dogs, so he does best with dogs who are confident and comfortable setting appropriate boundaries with him. Because of this, another dog in his forever home would need to be a good match, and introductions are a very important part of finding that fit.And one thing we want to be very honest about: Turnip needs an adopter who is comfortable setting boundaries and calmly correcting unwanted behaviors. He is a wonderful dog, and is still learning how to be the best version of himself. He needs someone who will lovingly show him what is expected while also giving him the time and consistency to learn.Turnip would thrive with an active family who enjoys getting outside and keeping their dog busy. A fenced yard would be a wonderful bonus, especially for a boy with his energy level, but an active family who enjoys walks and adventures could also be a great fit. Most importantly, Turnip needs someone who will see the dog he is today—not the neglected dog who first arrived at rescue—and give him the chance to continue becoming the happy, healthy, loved dog he was always meant to be. He has already overcome so much. Now he just needs his person. If you're looking for a goofy, affectionate, energetic Velcro dog who will happily follow you from room to room, play with his toys, cuddle up with his people, and keep you laughing along the way, Turnip may be your guy. He isn’t perfect—and he doesn't need to be. He just needs the right person willing to love him, guide him, set boundaries, and give him the forever he has waited so patiently for. 18. Henley

Senior · Male · White German Shepherd (medium coat) · 24 mi from Waukegan

BIO
Hello! My name is Henley. I am house trained and crate trained. You do not need to crate me as I am a mature, well-behaved guy. I’ll just go take a nap when you must step out. I enjoy being around my people. I love attention, pets & scratches. I will alert you if someone comes to the house, but I will settle down quickly.I live with another dog in my foster home and had no problems with other dogs when I was at the shelter. I did not do so well with meeting cats, so no cats for me. I walk well on a leash. I will bark and pull a bit if I see another dog, we are working on that. I know some commands and I have a good recall. Even though I am an older gentleman, I still like this stuffie rope toy I have. I don’t play fetch. I like to go for car rides, but I need help getting in/out of the car. I am sure I can learn how to use a ramp. Maybe you could teach me.I would love to find a home where my people are home more often than not. I occasionally play with my foster sister, but I can be an only dog. I prefer my people over other dogs. I am a low energy, low maintenance kind of guy. I do, however, enjoy my walks. We could go for a walk, maybe a little bit of yard time. Or we could just simply hangout together.

19. Tam

Adult · White German Shepherd (medium coat) · 24 mi from Waukegan

BIO
Hello! My name is Tam. I am 2 or 3 years old. I am house trained. I do not like to be crated. I do not need to be crated when you cannot supervise me. If you do leave me alone, I will sleep most of the time. I have other dogs here to keep me company. I am good with both men and women. I am not much of a snuggler, but I love to be pet. I’ll come over to you for attention. I will even roll over for belly rubs. In the daytime I will approach strangers slowly. At night if I don’t recognize a person, I will bark at them. I do very well with the other dogs in my foster home. They are females, different sizes. One dog is high energy, another not so much. I did not do so good with the cat. So, it is best if you do not have a cat. I like to destuff toys and pull all the toys out of the toy box. I guard my toys and food from the other dogs so foster mom doesn't leave anything laying around and is proactive with trying to work on this issue. I ignore loud noises like thunderstorms and sirens. I am nervous about getting in a car, but Foster Mom and I are working on this. I love my daily walks, and I am pretty much a dream walking companion as I am completely nonreactive on leash even to the point of ignoring squirrels.I would like to find a home with someone who is home more often than not. I do like running around & playing with one of the dogs here at my foster home. A home with someone that has patience and can continue working with me to build my confidence. Are you looking for a Velcro dog, I want to be one.

Hello! My name is Sami. I am house trained and crate trained. It is best to crate me when you cannot supervise me. Adopting a dog with children in Waukegan

Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.

Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.

Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
