Senior to Senior Adoption Candidate! (Matching senior dogs with senior people! We pay their vet bills when you use our Northern KY vet. The adopter provides food, home and love! From his Foster Mom: Dezi is a sweet, loving dog that gets along with other dogs as long as he's not sitting on your lap or near you when another dog comes near.

If that happens, he becomes very protective. He's been used to being the one and only and sharing his owner is not part of his DNA at this time. Will sleep in a crate but preference is to sleep with his owner. Loves being outdoors and playing with his tennis ball. He has started going to the door when he wants out. Dezi is starting to use pee pads like our other dogs. Has a good appetite....not much of a kibble eater. Has a little trouble navigating steps .....eyesight a little dim...but goes down and up on his own with coaxing or when following other dogs. Loves belly rubs. Up to date on all shots, neutered and microchipped. Would make someone a sweet companion.Do you have room in your heart and home for this sweet senior? Adoption fee: $100

4. Malloy
Senior (8 years 11 months) · Male · Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 71 mi from Lexington

Adorable MALLOY is a lively little gentleman looking for a home. He's a sweet 17 pound chiweenie (dachshund/chihuahua)-type mixed breed boy who was estimated to be 9 years but you might be tempted to question that estimate if you see this guy chase toys. Malloy has a unique looking coat with a dapple/merle type pattern. That plus that blue eye makes us suspect there is some dapple/red merle dachshund in his family tree. Malloy is sweet and friendly, fine with other dogs and uninterested in cats. He's not ready to be considered an old man yet, he definitely acts like a middle-aged guy. In addition to standard vetting, Malloy just had a dental cleaning to make sure his oral health is A-OK. Malloy was found as a stray and was taken in by someone whose resident dogs were attacking him so he ended up on a chain outdoors, no life for a sweet little guy. Malloy's manners suggest he probably had a loving home at some point in his life. His coat was in rough shape thanks to fleas but that issue has been addressed and his hair is growing back nicely. Now all he needs is a place to call home. If you'd like to meet Malloy, please fill out a dog adoption application at
dreamhouserescue.org.
We are happy to arrange a private meet with an approved adopter. You can meet Malloy at our weekly adoption event, Saturday 11:30am-1:30pm at PetSmart Eastgate.

Our fully vetted adoptable dogs go to prospective homes for a one-week trial period to make sure the dog and home are the right fit before an adoption is finalized. We only adopt dogs into homes where all current pets are spayed/neutered and current on vaccines and heartworm and flea and tick prevention. We do check veterinary references to make sure adopters are compliant with standard veterinary care. Our adoptable dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm tested, dewormed and current on flea and tick and heartworm prevention.

My hearing is not the best, but i am learning hand signals. I am friendly and love to meet new people. My previous family said I did great with kids. Not sure how I do around cats, but seem to do well with other dogs. I am very independent and like to sleep on my own, meaning I may not sleep in bed with you.

When it comes to being potty trained, I use puppy pads and sometimes will let you know i need to go outside (if you have the good treats!). I do love to go for walks and do well on the leash, though i am slow because I love to sniff everything! Apartment living would be fine because I dont bark. One last thing, a girl can never have too many outfits!! I am working on building up my wardrobe!

7. Maya
Senior · Female · Husky / Mixed · 76 mi from Lexington

Maya is a loving senior husky that looks like a stuffed animal with her too cute face. She was found to be heartworm positive and has gone thru treatment. 9. Juicy
Senior (14 years 2 months) · Female · Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 15 mi from Lexington

Juicy wants you to know that age is just a number. At 14 years of age she has unfortunately found herself in need of finding a forever home. While her eyes and ears are starting to fail her, she’s still able to get around quite well. Thus far she seems to enjoy car rides, slow walks where she can sniff around, nice fluffy beds, and a quiet place on your furniture to relax. Juicy doesn’t seem to mind other dogs or cats. With her vision and hearing failing she does startle easily and will snap at you with sudden movements so a home with older children would be best. We provide you giving a senior dog a home is very rewarding.

Welcoming our newest foster dog, Chris! He arrived yesterday and his big smile and waggy tail have already won us over. He’s estimated to be about ten years old. Leash walking skills? Perfect. Cats? Totally ignores. Housebreaking? Has a good start! Understands to go outside but occasionally wants to mark indoors - this will improve now that he’s neutered!

Adopting a senior dog in Lexington
Older dogs are usually calm, affectionate and happy with shorter walks, which makes them a good match for older adults and first-time dog owners.
Ask the rescue about the dog's health and vet history. Many rescues charge less to adopt a senior dog.
Many small dogs live to 15 or older, so a senior dog can still be part of your family for years.
