1. Olive

Senior (11 years) · Female · Boxer (medium coat) · 8 mi from St. Paul

Senior Golden Girl here! I'm hanging out here at Shady Pines and though they're nice to me, I would like to get out of here and into a home with some roommates. I don't mind other dogs or cats. My retirement home can have kids but I prefer older, respectful kids because my eyesight and hearing aren't what they used to be. I'm great on a leash and enjoy strolls through the neighborhood. I'm very sweet and love pets. Want to be my Golden Girl?

3. Harper

Senior (9 years) · Female · Boxer (short coat) · 14 mi from St. Paul

This ADORABLE little girl arrived at her Ohio foster home not quite two weeks ago and she is doing very well there. Harper has a lot going on....her backend is a little wonky, she needs to get her mouth/teeth checked out, and she had some bumps removed that we are a little concerned about. She is the sweetest thing, is eating well and is definitely soaking up all of the love and attention in her foster home. Harper tested iffy with other dogs at the shelter and has not been around cats or kids. She is completely vetted, including spayed and microchipped.

4. Bella

Senior · Female · American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed · 22 mi from St. Paul

Meet BellaSometimes life changes in an instant. After spending nearly eight years with the family she loved, Bella suddenly found herself back in the shelter when her owner could no longer keep her due to housing. Understandably, she was heartbroken. The noisy shelter was incredibly stressful for her, and despite the staff's best efforts to help her cope, all Bella really needed was a soft bed, kind people, and a place to feel safe again.Thankfully, The Rescue Crew was able to give her exactly that—and almost immediately, Bella's true personality began to shine. This sweet girl is proof that age is just a number.

Read more about Bella

At 10 years old, Bella still has plenty of pep in her step and doesn't act like a senior one bit! Whether she's heading out for a walk, greeting new friends, or happily trotting around the yard, she's full of life and always ready to be part of whatever you're doing. If you so much as glance in Bella's direction, she's already making her way over for pets. She's the kind of dog who gently tucks her head under your hand or arm, quietly asking for just a little more affection. The more love you give, the happier she is.Bella is truly one of those easy, "just fits right into the family" kind of dogs. She is: Fully potty trained Crate trained (she may sing you a little song at first because she'd rather be with you, but settles in nicely) Walks beautifully on a Gentle Leader Eager to please and responds well to commands Friendly with everyone she meetsShe's also officially kid-approved! Bella recently met children ages 6 and 8 and was wonderful with both of them, happily greeting them with her signature tail wags and full-body wiggles. While Bella enjoys chasing squirrels and chipmunks, so a home without cats may be the best fit, she has been calm around other dogs and isn't reactive on walks. With slow, thoughtful introductions, we think she'd likely enjoy having a canine companion. And one more thing...Bella has a very special talent. Her adorable snores just might become your favorite bedtime soundtrack. Think less "freight train" and more "instant white noise machine." They're oddly comforting and guaranteed to make you smile.Bella has already experienced what it's like to lose the home she loved. Now she's looking for the family who will remind her that the very best chapters are still ahead.Life has thrown Bella more than one unexpected curveball, but through it all she's remained incredibly loving, trusting, and ready to share her whole heart with the people around her. If you're looking for a loyal companion who is affectionate, well-mannered, easy to live with, and ready to shower you with unconditional love, Bella may be the perfect match. 5. Coco

Senior (13 years 11 months) · Female · Shih Tzu / Havanese / Mixed (medium coat) · 12 mi from St. Paul

I

f you’re looking for a gentle, devoted companion, Coco may be the perfect match. This adorable Shih Tzu/Dachshund mix is as sweet as they come and has a quiet, loving nature that makes her easy to adore. One of the cutest things about Coco is the way she walks—she has a little bunny-hop style that is guaranteed to make you smile.

Read more about Coco

Coco is happiest simply being near her people. She loves companionship, whether it’s from humans or other dogs, and is content to quietly follow you from room to room throughout the day. She enjoys cuddling, relaxing nearby, and keeping an eye on her favorite people. While she can be a little shy when first meeting new people, it doesn’t take long for her to realize she’s safe. Once she does, she becomes incredibly trusting and affectionate.

Coco gets along wonderfully with all dog-friendly dogs and would enjoy having a canine companion. However, she does not require another dog as long as her people are home frequently and able to provide the companionship she loves.

This sweet girl enjoys soft treats, cozy places to nap, and having a comfortable spot where she can watch for her people. Her favorite setup is her kennel with the door left open or a soft blanket-filled box near the doorway where she can keep an eye on everything while waiting for her family to return.

As part of her daily routine, coco receives eye drops in the vending and 1/2 tablet of Benadryl twice a day with a little canned food. She’s very cooperative and does well with this.

Coco isn’t looking for excitement or adventure—she’s looking for love. She would thrive in a home where she can be included in daily life, receive plenty of affection, and spend her days close to the people she loves most.

If you’re searching for a loyal little shadow with a heart of gold, Coco just might be the very best girl you’ve been waiting for.

Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. 6. Gandalf

Senior (10 years 5 months) · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (medium coat) · 12 mi from St. Paul

Don’t let his cloudy eyes fool you—Gandalf sees the world with his heart, and it’s one of the sweetest hearts you’ll ever meet.

This darling Yorkie is completely blind in his left eye and has very limited vision in his right due to cataracts. While he’ll need a family willing to make a few thoughtful accommodations, caring for Gandalf is surprisingly easy. Once he learns his surroundings, he confidently navigates his world with patience, curiosity, and quiet determination.

Read more about Gandalf

Gandalf is adorable and the absolute easiest dog I have ever cared for. Since his dental and learning the layout of the house and backyard, he is absolutely THRIVING! It is so much fun to watch. He is loving and lovable.

It took him about two weeks to figure out the house and yard layout. Another week or two after that, he stopped peeing in the belly bands I had been keeping him in while he was in the house. He completely surprised his foster family by being housebroken! He just needed about three weeks to figure out how and where the door was.

Now, when he wants to go outside, he quietly stands by his foster families patio door and sometimes scratches at it.

He no longer sleeps in his crate. He loves sleeping in his foster families bed! He doesn’t hog the bed or steal the blankets. He just curls up and quietly falls asleep.

He is a good eater, too. I feed him in his crate because my dogs will absolutely steal his food. All of the dogs eat in their crates at this house, so he fits right in.

He is also a very good pooper—very reliably pooping when he goes outside in the morning.

And then there is his one great nemesis: THE VACUUM CLEANER.

Even though he can’t really see it, he dives right in and tries to bite it whenever it is turned on. Apparently, blindness is no obstacle when you have strong feelings about household appliances.

Watching this little guy figure everything out and become more confident and comfortable has been such a joy. He is really, truly thriving. ❤️

He’s also a curious little explorer. He loves wandering through the house in search of hidden treats, chewing on bones and small stuffed toys, stretching out for sunny naps, and investigating anything new at his own pace. He’s a wonderful eater, is doing great with pooping outside on a schedule, and continues to make progress with house training. He currently wears a belly band indoors while learning that peeing outside is just as rewarding. Because of his vision loss, rewarding him without eye contact takes a little extra patience, but he’s making steady progress.

Simple verbal cues help Gandalf feel safe and confident. His foster family says “touch” before petting him and “up” before picking him up so he always knows what’s coming. Those little routines quickly become second nature and help him trust his people even more.

Gandalf could happily live as an only dog if his family is home most of the time. Because of his blindness, he thrives on companionship and would likely become lonely if left alone for long periods. A calm, dog-friendly small dog would also be a wonderful companion, though it’s not a requirement. While he doesn’t spend much time playing with other dogs, he enjoys their presence and often uses them as a point of reference. He especially loves following his foster’s white dog outside, using her like a gentle guide as they wander the yard together before relaxing side by side in the sunshine.

Gandalf would be an excellent fit for a quieter household where someone is around often to share life’s simple moments. He’s the kind of dog who doesn’t ask for much—just a little patience, a predictable routine, and someone to love.

His vision may be limited, but his capacity for love is anything but. Gandalf is proof that sometimes the dogs who see the least help us appreciate the most.

7. Gerald Frederick

Senior (8 years 5 months) · Male · Chihuahua (short coat) · 12 mi from St. Paul

Gerald Frederick is a sweet senior gentleman with a heart full of love and a strong desire to be close to his people. If you’re looking for a loyal companion, Gerald is your guy. He is the definition of a “velcro dog” and will happily follow his humans from room to room, always wanting to be part of whatever you’re doing.

Read more about Gerald Frederick

Despite his age, Gerald still has a surprising amount of energy and enjoys exploring, snuggling, and, of course, accepting treats whenever they’re offered. His favorite activities include curling up under a cozy blanket, relaxing in a hammock with his foster mom, and taking frequent naps to recharge. Gerald’s friendly personality shines wherever he goes, and he has a way of winning over everyone he meets, from veterinary staff to new friends.

Gerald gets along well with other dogs, cats, and even busy toddlers, usually choosing to quietly coexist and mind his own business. While he generally ignores other pets, he may offer a gentle warning growl if they invade his personal space.

As a senior boy, Gerald does have some special medical needs. He is in the early stages of heart failure and takes daily medication for both his heart and thyroid. He also needs regular potty breaks throughout the day. Gerald is still learning that the crate isn’t such a scary place, and crate training remains a work in progress. He can be vocal when crated, may have accidents if left too long, and would do best with a family where someone is home much of the time.

Gerald’s ideal home is one filled with love, companionship, soft blankets, and people who appreciate having a devoted shadow by their side. In return, he’ll offer endless affection, loyal companionship, and the sweetest senior-dog snuggles imaginable.

8. King

Senior (8 years 5 months) · Male · Chihuahua (medium coat) · 12 mi from St. Paul

King is a lovable, goofy boy with a heart as big as his personality. He may be sight-impaired, but don’t tell him that—he’s far too busy enjoying life, making friends, and perfecting the art of being a professional couch potato.

Because King has limited vision, it takes him a little time to learn new surroundings and settle into a routine. Once he gets his bearings, though, he navigates surprisingly well and quickly becomes comfortable. And when that happens, you’ll discover a sweet, affectionate dog who pretty much loves everybody.

Read more about King

King’s favorite activities include lounging on the couch with his people, exploring the fenced yard, enjoying treats, and eagerly anticipating mealtime. In fact, meal preparation is a full event in King’s world. His excitement is impossible to miss as he sploots on the floor, paddles his front legs, and lets out enthusiastic barks while waiting for his food to arrive.

One of King’s most charming quirks is his signature grumble. When being picked up, having his harness put on, or sometimes even when receiving belly rubs, he may growl and grumble dramatically. It sounds much more serious than it is—he has never attempted to bite and is simply expressing himself in his own goofy way. Once you know him, you’ll quickly learn that the funny noises are just part of the King experience.

King enjoys the company of other animals. He would love a playful dog companion closer to his own size, as he sometimes accidentally runs over very small dogs while navigating his surroundings. He also has a polite fascination with cats and seems convinced that someday they will agree to play with him. While he enjoys having animal friends, he does not require another pet in the home as long as his people are around much of the time.

Despite only having one tooth left, King remains an enthusiastic eater and is always happy to sample treats and fruit. He has shown some interest in toys and may discover new favorites as his confidence continues to grow.

Because of his limited vision, King can become nervous in overwhelming or chaotic environments. He also has some separation anxiety and prefers a home where someone is around much of the time. He can be vocal when excited, making him a poor fit for apartment living.

King is truly one of those dogs who leaves a lasting impression. His sight impairment, funny grumbles, happy spirit, and endless affection don’t make him difficult—they simply make him unique. Beneath all of his quirks is an incredibly sweet, lovable, playful boy who wants nothing more than a soft couch, a loving family, and a place to belong.

If you’re looking for a dog with personality, charm, and enough love to fill a house, King is ready to claim his throne in your heart.
